Martin Pšenička, Anna Roudová, Aleš Vráblík, Radek Černý
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: alternative fuel components, hydrodesulphurisation, plastic, pyrolysis oil, used tyres
This study aimed to determine the effect of the supplied pyrolysis oils (oils obtained from the pyrolysis of used tyres and the depolymerisation of plastics) on the activity of the hydrodesulphurisation catalyst. Each pyrolysis oil was added at 20% weight to a standard feedstock and processed on pilot plant reactors under the set conditions of a commercial unit, including an activated catalyst. Following the catalyst stabilisation, the standard material was changed to the mixture with the pyrolysis oils. The reaction conditions, particularly the reaction temperature, were controlled. The results of the product analyses were compared with the EN 590 standard for evaluating diesel fuel; the hydrogenated mixed fuel meets most requirements. Only the density, flash point, distillation curve and lubricity have minor deviations, which could be adjusted by treating the sample before or after hydrogenation. The properties of the products, in terms of the low-temperature properties, were also in... [more]

Keywords: expert-public perceptions, siting, wind turbines
Experiences of wind turbines (WT) shape public perception and acceptance of the technology, influencing government policy, deployment, and land-use policies of wind turbines. This paper attempts to find changes in public perceptions over the last three decades and differences between experts and the public over different land-use options. A semi-structured questionnaire that integrates a visual survey of 10 images of WT technology in different urban, landscape and seascape settings was presented to both groups. The perceptions of siting, proximity, landscape type, and maturity of urban wind turbines’ technology in renewable energy generation were contrasted. The results revealed that both the public and experts alike significantly preferred images of WT inclusion in seascape and landscape settings and responded negatively to images of WT as an addition to buildings in urban contexts. Images of wind turbines around transport settings were ranked in the second set of acceptances, after l... [more]

Keywords: Diesel, fuzzy logic, recognition system, sustainability index, sustainable transport
The unrestricted consumption of fossil fuels negatively impacts the economic, social and environmental aspects, observed from a sustainable perspective. Therefore, it is necessary to develop and adopt skills that enable the monitoring and mitigation of risks to the environment. In view of this, we propose a method with multiple approaches emphasizing a three-dimensional perspective of energy consumption by diesel engines, which represent one of the main pollutants emitters in transport. As a methodology, fuzzy logic was adopted, together with a recognition system, in order to mitigate the uncertainties inherent to the applied data. The procedure was applied to the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with information collected from seven toll plazas and a radar with volumetric counting. The results indicate a good adherence of the sustainability index to real cases, allowing a better observation of changes in environmental criteria and a more efficient inspection in the application of good... Keywords: biodiesel, Box–Behnken design, Calophyllum inophyllum seed oil, enzymatic, interesterification
Biodiesel is increasingly being considered as an alternative to the fossil fuel as it is renewable, nontoxic, biodegradable, and feasible for mass production. Biodiesel can be produced from various types of vegetable oils. Calophyllum inophyllum seed oil (CSO) is among the prospective nonedible vegetable oils considered as a raw material for biodiesel synthesis. The most common process of the biodiesel manufacturing is the transesterification of vegetable oils which results in glycerol as a by-product. Thus, product purification is necessary. In this work, an alternative route to biodiesel synthesis through interesterification reaction of vegetable oil and ethyl acetate was conducted. By replacing alcohol with ethyl acetate, triacetin was produced as a side product rather than glycerol. Triacetin can be used as a fuel additive to increase the octane number of the fuel. Therefore, triacetin separation from biodiesel products is needless. The interesterification reaction is catalyzed by... [more]

Keywords: evolutionary algorithms, nearshore sites, optimal configuration, Wave Energy, wave energy converters
Ocean energy is one potential renewable energy alternative to fossil fuels that has a more significant power generation due to its better predictability and availability. In order to harness this source, wave energy converters (WECs) have been devised and used over the past several years to generate as much energy and power as is feasible. While it is possible to install these devices in both nearshore and offshore areas, nearshore sites are more appropriate places since more severe weather occurs offshore. Determining the optimal location might be challenging when dealing with sites along the coast since they often have varying capacities for energy production. Constructing wave farms requires determining the appropriate location for WECs, which may lead us to its correct and optimum design. The WEC size, shape, and layout are factors that must be considered for installing these devices. Therefore, this review aims to explain the methodologies, advancements, and effective hydrodynamic... Keywords: air-source heat pump, COP, enhanced vapor injection, solar-air collector
In this paper, a solar-assisted enhanced vapor injection air-source heat pump (SC-EVIHP) system was built to investigate its heating performance in cold regions. A typical-weather day in Harbin was selected for the experiment, and the heating characteristics of the SC-EVIHP system were explored under variable working conditions. The experimental results showed that the system was greatly affected by solar radiation intensity. On typical-weather days in winter, the maximum values for the heating capacity and COP of the system appeared at the time of maximum radiation intensity. Compared with conventional enhanced vapor injection air-source heat pump systems (EVI-ASHPs), the heating capacity and COP were increased by 24.9% and 12.5% at most, respectively. The COP of the system increased by at most 11.1% under conditions where the outdoor temperature was −12 °C and the outlet hot air temperature of the solar air collector was 40 °C. The SC-EVIHP system works well in a low-temperature envi... [more]

The gasification rate of fuel, biomass gasification in particular, is an important parameter which is worth considering in the process of creating a gasifier with a continuous operation process. The gasification of biomass is a complex thermochemical process. The theoretical and practical studies of the gasification rate of biomass are complicated because of a high thermochemical rate of reactions in the functioning zones of a gasifier. The complexity of the study prevents the achievement of the required accuracy of the analytical model of the gasification rate of biomass. The known theoretical models of the gasification rate only partially describe the dynamics of the gasification rate of biomass. Moreover, most scientific studies are focused on establishing the effects of gasifier parameters and the gasification process on the quality indicators of the received gas but not on the gasification rate of fuel. To build an accurate model of the gasification rate the authors propose a seri... [more]

Keywords: battery energy storage system, community energy market, consumer-centric electricity market, fairness indicators, prosumers
Traditional models of power systems are undergoing a restructuring process, stimulated by the growing deployment of renewable energy sources, making them more decentralized and progressively increasing the focus on the consumer. New arrangements are being explored, allowing consumers to play a more active role in energy systems, highlighting the concept of consumer-centric markets. This work presents an optimization model that considers the insertion of the battery energy storage system (BESS) in the concept of community energy markets. This model aims to increase the community income and includes the degradation of BESS, also evaluating different arrangements of BESS in the community markets. In the investigated scenarios, discussions about the feasibility of inserting BESS through the analysis of social welfare (SW) and fairness indicators were carried out. With the results, it was possible to observe that there are structures that are more advantageous from the perspective of the co... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: DEM, fracture propagation, glutenite, hydraulic fracturing, stress heterogeneity
The geometry heterogeneity induced by embedded gravel can cause severe stress heterogeneity and strength heterogeneity in glutenite reservoirs, and subsequently affect the initiation and propagation of hydraulic fractures. Since the discrete element method (DEM) can accurately describe the inter-particle interactions, the macromechanical behavior of glutenite specimen can be preciously represented by DEM. Therefore, the initiation and propagation mechanisms of hydraulic fractures were investigated using a coupling seepage-DEM approach, the terminal fracture morphologies of hydraulic fractures were determined, and the effects of stress differences, permeability, and gravel strength were studied. The results show that the initiation and propagation of hydraulic fractures are significantly influenced by embedded gravel. In addition, the stress heterogeneity and strength heterogeneity induced by the gravel embedded near the wellbore increase local initiation points, causing a complicated f... [more]

Keywords: coal spontaneous combustion, heating rate, oxidation heat effect, physical similarity reference test, positive temperature difference leading
During a heating experiment, there are two sources of heat that increase the temperature of a coal sample: the heat released by the oxidation reaction of the coal itself, and the heat provided by the experimental system. Here, we propose a method for measuring the thermal effect of oxidation and self-ignition through a reference experiment conducted with a material that is physically similar to coal but does not combust. The reference material used was an aggregate of alumina, fly ash, and concrete, and experiments were conducted on both materials simultaneously. The temperature of the coal sample was obtained under self-heating conditions, and compared with that of the non-combusting material. The relationship of temperature as a function of time for both materials was determined from the data, the comparison of which allowed for the thermal effect of oxidation and coal spontaneous combustion (CSC) to be calculated. The reliability of the thermal effect data obtained by the experiment... [more]

Keywords: afterburner, emission, jet engine, particles, particulate matter
Particle emissions from aircraft engines are mainly related to the emission of particles with very small diameters. The phenomena of the formation of particles in various operating conditions of turbine engines are known. However, it is difficult to find the results of research on the use of the afterburner in the literature. Increased aviation activity within military airports and situations such as air shows are associated with a very intense emission of particles, and pose a direct threat to human health. This article presents an analysis of particulate matter emissions from a military aircraft engine, with particular emphasis on operation with an afterburner. The parameters of the emission of particles determined were: PM Number Emissions Index (EIN), Particle Number Emissions Intensity (EN), PM Mass Emission Index (EIM), PM Mass Emission Intensity (EM), Differential Particle Number Emission Index, Differential Particle Volume Emission Index, and Differential Particle Mass Emission... Keywords: Concentrating Solar Power plant production capacity, direct normal irradiance mapping, Engerer model, global horizontal irradiance, typical meteorological year
Evaluation of the Concentrating Solar Power capacity factor is critical to support decision making on possible regional energy investments. For such evaluations, the System Advisor Model is used to perform capacity factor assessments. Among the required data, information concerning direct normal irradiance is fundamental. In this context, the Engerer model is used to estimate direct normal irradiance hourly values out of global horizontal irradiance ground measurements and other observed meteorological variables. Model parameters were calibrated for direct normal irradiance measurements in Évora (Southern Portugal), being then applied to a network of 90 stations, part of the Portuguese Meteorological Service. From the modelled direct normal irradiance, and for stations that comprise 20 years of data, typical meteorological years were determined. Finally, to identify locations of interest for possible installations of Concentrating Solar Power systems, annual direct normal irradiance av... [more]

This paper presents the impact of flow changes in the Warta River and water management rules regarding the Jeziorsko dam reservoir on the energy production by the hydropower plant in the period 1995−2021. The Jeziorsko dam reservoir was built in 1986. It is the second largest dam reservoir in Poland in terms of surface area. In 1994, a hydropower plant with an installed capacity of 4.89 MW started operation. The study results show the average annual energy production from 1995 to 2021 at a level of 18,718 MWh. On the other hand, energy production largely changed from year to year, from 12,432 MWh (in 2019) to 26,916 MWh (in 2001). The droughts that have occurred in the Warta River basin over the past two decades have had a major impact on energy production. As a consequence of the drought, it was not possible to maintain the required water level in the reservoir. Moreover, a change in the rules for the reservoir’s management that led to lower water levels in the reservoir by 1.5 m betw... [more]

Electrical energy storage systems have a fundamental role in the energy transition process supporting the penetration of renewable energy sources into the energy mix. Compressed air energy storage (CAES) is a promising energy storage technology, mainly proposed for large-scale applications, that uses compressed air as an energy vector. Although the first document in literature on CAES appeared in 1976 and the first commercial plant was installed in 1978, this technology started to gain attention only in the decade 2000−2010, with remarkable scientific production output and the realization of other pre-commercial demonstrators and commercial plants. This study applies bibliometric techniques to draw a picture of the current status of the scientific progress and analyze the trend of the research on CAES and identify research gaps that can support researchers and manufacturers involved in this entering technology. Recent trends of research include aspects related to the off-design, the de... [more]

Keywords: energy management system, energy storage system, nanogrid, photovoltaic, Stateflow
An effective energy management system (EMS) was designed based on the Stateflow (SF) approach for a grid-connected nanogrid (NG) composed of a photovoltaic (PV) array with a battery bank and supercapacitor (SC) energy storage system (ESS). The PV energy system, battery bank and SC (ESS), dual active bridge DC/DC converters, DC/AC inverters, control algorithms, and controllers were developed to test the operation of the NG. The average and high-frequency power components are separated using frequency division of the ESS power utilizing a low-pass filter; the average power is absorbed by the battery bank, while the high-frequency power is absorbed by the SC. The aim of this paper is to design an EMS to manage the energy of a grid-connected NG system considering the availability of the PV array, ESS, and demand requirements. Different scenarios of operation were tested to check the EMS behaviour during the day with a random demand profile, including: (1) a PV array with the grid supplying... [more]

Formaldehyde (HCHO), a carcinogenic carbonyl compound and precursor of tropospheric ozone, can be found in vehicle exhaust. Even though the continuous monitoring of HCHO has been recommended, the real-world emissions from the road transport sector are not commonly available. The main reason for this knowledge gap has been the difficulty to measure HCHO in real-time and during real-world testing. This, for instance, increases the uncertainty of the O3 simulated by air quality models. The present study investigates real-time HCHO measurements comparing three Fourier Transform InfraRed spectrometers (FTIRs) and one Quantum Cascade Laser InfraRed spectrometer (QCL-IR) directly sampling from the exhaust of one gasoline passenger car, one Diesel commercial vehicle and one Diesel heavy-duty vehicle, all meeting recent European emission standards (Euro 6/VI). Non-negligible emissions of HCHO were measured from the Diesel light-duty vehicle, with emissions increasing as temperature decreased. R... [more]

Keywords: cellulose, FDS method, insulation of transformers, mineral oil, moisture, pressboard, transformer diagnostics
The article presents an oil moistening method, identical to the oil moistening in power transformers. Moistening took place through the migration of moisture from the moistened pressboard to the brand new oil. The AC electrical parameters (admittance, phase shift angle, permittivity, loss tangent and conductivity) of the brand new and moistened insulating oil were tested. All measured parameters were found to be affected by the oil moistening. The greatest changes were observed in the loss tangent and conductivity. Moisturization increases the value of tanδ at a frequency of 10−4 Hz from about 20 to about 70. With an increase in frequency to about 400−1000 Hz, a minimum is observed, the position of which depends on the temperature. Its value for moistened oil is about six times lower than for brand new oil. This moisturizing increased the activation energy of the conductivity from 0.466 ± 0.0265 eV to 0.890 ± 0.0115 eV. This is likely due to the acceleration of water molecules diffusio... [more]

Keywords: 2-methyltetrahydrofuran, Diesel, dual-fuel engine, reduced mechanism
2-methyltetrahydrofuran (MTHF2) has been recently regarded as a promising alternative engine fuel. However, the chemical reaction mechanism for MTHF2 combustion in the engine has not been reported to date. In this study, a reduced diesel/MTHF2 reaction mechanism with only 78 species among 233 reactions was constructed for diesel/MTHF2 dual-fuel engine simulations. Firstly, a diesel surrogate mechanism involving the sub-mechanisms of n-decane, iso-octane, methylcyclohexane (MCH), toluene, a reduced mechanism of C2-C3 species and a detailed mechanism of H2/CO/C1 was selected. Secondly, a skeletal MTHF2 mechanism containing 54 species and 294 reactions was formulated under engine-relevant conditions using combined mechanism reduction methods. Thirdly, a reduced sub-mechanism of MTHF2 oxidation with 11 species and 13 reactions was extracted and combined with the four-component diesel surrogate fuel mechanism. Subsequently, the reduced diesel/MTHF2 mechanism was obtained by improving the co... [more]

Keywords: analysis of variance, coalbed methane, fracturing fluid volume, hydraulic fracturing, water block
Hydraulic fracturing is the main technical means for the reservoir stimulation of coalbed methane (CBM) vertical wells. The design of fracturing fluid volume (FFV) is mainly through numerical simulation, and the numerical simulation method does not fully consider the water block damage caused by the leakage of fracturing fluid into the reservoir. In this work, the variance analysis method was used to analyze the production data of 1238 CBM vertical wells in the Fanzhuang block and Zhengzhuang block of the Qinshui Basin, to clarify the relationship between the FFV and the peak gas production (PGP) under the different ratios of critical desorption pressure to reservoir pressure (Rc/r), and to reveal the controlling mechanism of fracturing fluid on CBM migration. The results show that both the FFV and Rc/r have a significant impact on gas production. When Rc/r < 0.5, the PGP decreases with the increase of the FFV, and the FFV that is beneficial to gas production is 200−500 m3. When Rc/r >... [more]

The purpose of this research is to develop an efficient single-phase grid-connected PV system using a better performing asymmetrical multilevel inverter (AMI). Circuit component reduction, harmonic reduction, and grid integration are critical criteria for better inverter efficiency. The proposed inverter’s optimized topology requires seven unidirectional switches, three symmetric dc sources, and three diodes to produce an asymmetric fifteen level output; whereas, the same configuration will generate 7, 11, and 15-level output with an appropriate choice of dc source magnitudes. It is possible to reduce inverter losses and boost efficiency by decreasing the number of switches used. The integration of an asymmetric 15-level inverter with a grid-connected solar photovoltaic system is discussed in this article. A grid-connected solar photovoltaic (GCSPV) system is modelled and simulated using an asymmetric 15-level inverter. The dc sources of the 15-level inverter are replaced with PV sourc... [more]

Keywords: carbonate reservoir, hydraulic fracture propagation, physical simulation, vug, XFEM model
In karstic-fractured carbonate reservoirs, most of the oil resources are hosted in vugs. Connecting as many vugs as possible by hydraulic fracturing is the key to achieving effective development. However, the interaction mechanism between vugs and hydraulic fractures is complicated and has not been fully revealed. In this study, both experimental and numerical simulations were implemented to investigate the interaction between vugs and hydraulic fractures. Key factors, such as vug size, horizontal stress difference, and the internal pressure of the vug, were considered. The results showed that the vug played an important role in the propagation of hydraulic fractures. Three interaction modes of vugs and hydraulic fractures were observed: crossing, arresting, and bypassing. Owing to the variation of the stress concentration existing around the vug, the hydraulic fracture could be arrested by a small vug but would bypass a vug with a larger size. Whether the hydraulic fracture could comm... [more]
