The Investigation of the Bubble Behaviors on the Vertical Heat Exchange Tube
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: bubble behaviors, pool boiling, vertical heating tube, visual experiment
In the boiling process, the growth, separation, and movement of bubbles are expeditious. The visualization experiment of nucleate boiling was carried out with the help of high-speed photography. The evolution of the entire bubble life cycle is clearly observed at the nucleation site without interference from the leading and neighboring bubbles. Bubble behavior at the local heating surface has strong randomness due to the influence of the wall micro-structure, convection intensity, heating surface geometry configuration, heat flux density, and so on, but bubble behavior also has a certain regularity. In this paper, the behavior characteristics of bubbles were analyzed, with a particular focus on the evolution of bubbles. Under lower load (ΔTsat = 8~9 °C) in study conditions, nucleation sites have a long enough time interval. In addition, the bubble separation and rising velocity obviously increase due to the change of pool boiling flow characteristics in the restricted space. The settin... [more]

Determinants of Renewable Energy Development: Evidence from the EU Countries
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: corruption, democracy, determinants, drivers, EU countries, factors, GDP per capita, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, unemployment
Sustainable development of the global economy can be achieved with the help of renewable energy (RE). The paper investigates the determinants of RE development in order to boost its adoption. The determinants of RE deployment were analyzed using random-effects GLS regression for the panel data from 27 EU member states in 2011−2020.The results confirm that economic development and high employment in advanced technology manufacturing are drivers of the RE sector, whereas unemployment growth affects RE deployment negatively. Our results show that active political participation and economic freedom promote RE; however, the level of corruption and democracy does not have a statistically significant impact on it. Favorable geographical location was proved to be a determinant of RE development. The hypothesis that plenty of natural resources discourage countries to develop RE was disproved. The major policy implications for RE promotion include the importance of economy deregulation, open mar... [more]

Mathematical Model of Air Dryer Heat Pump Exchangers
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: air dryer, condenser, evaporator, fan–exchanger interaction, finned tube heat exchanger, heat pump
This paper presents a mathematical model of heat pump exchangers and their thermal interaction with a fan for an air dryer. The calculation algorithm developed for the finned heat exchangers is based on the ε-NTU method, allowing the determination of air side and refrigerant side heat transfer coefficients, evaporator and condenser heat capacity and air parameters at the dehumidifier outlet with known exchanger geometries, initial air parameters and mass flow rate. The model was verified on an industrial dehumidifier test bench. This enabled the heat transfer coefficients for the exchanger to be calculated as a function of the speed and, therefore, the power of the fan’s drive motor. An increase in fan performance on the one hand results in an increase in the heat transfer rate, but, on the other hand, it causes an increase in the total energy consumption of the motor. Thus, while it causes an increase in drying capacity, it also causes an increase in the energy consumption of the dehu... [more]

A 1D-3D Coupling Model to Evaluate Hydropower Generation System Stability
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: 1D–3D coupling model, hydro power, pressure pulsation, sensitivity analysis, transition stability
This paper proposes a novel 1D-3D approach for the stability characteristics of the hydropower generation system (HGS) in transition processes. First, a 1D-3D coupling model was established for the HGS in the load-reduction process. Second, a sensitivity analysis of the HGS’s parameters to the rotation speed and discharge was conducted. Third, the pressure pulsation characteristics of the HGS with three typical guide vane openings were analyzed during the load-reduction process. The results show that with the closure of the guide vane, the discharge gradually decreases and it is sensitive to the change in hydraulic parameters. The rotation speed fluctuates at the early stage of the transition process and is easily affected by mechanical parameters. In addition, the pressure pulsation inside the Francis turbine is more intense under small openings than large openings, and the primary frequency of pressure pulsation under three opening degrees is the blade frequency. The 1D-3D coupling m... [more]

Economic Dispatch of Power Retailers: A Bi-Level Programming Approach via Market Clearing Price
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: bi-level programming, chance constraint, economic dispatch, power retailer
For power retailers in a smart grid, it is necessary to design an economic dispatch method to maintain a balance between power supply and demand on the sale side as well as obtain better economic benefits. This study concentrates on the economic dispatch of the dominant retailer in a regional market. The dominant retailer is considered to be equipped with generator resources such as distributed photovoltaics (PV), wind turbines (WT), and microturbines (MT). As one retailer cannot exactly predict the market conditions of other retailers, the retail market is considered to be modeled as a dichotomous-market model consisting of the dominant retailer market and the other retailers market. As a result, a bi-level optimal dispatch model is proposed for the dominant power retailer based on the dichotomous-market model. In the proposed model, the outer problem aims to minimize the costs of purchases under time-of-use (TOU) price given in the market clearing process, while the inner problem is... [more]

Impact of Reactive Power from Public Electric Vehicle Stations on Transformer Aging and Active Energy Losses
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: active power losses, electric vehicle charging stations, electric vehicles, power distribution transformers, reactive power, thermal aging
Climate change at the global level has accelerated the energy transition around the world. With the aim of reducing CO2 emissions, the paradigm of using electric vehicles (EVs) has been globally accepted. The impact of EVs and their integration into the energy system is vital for accepting the increasing number of EVs. Considering the way the modern energy system functions, the role of EVs in the system may vary. A methodology for analyzing the impact of reactive power from public electric vehicle charging stations (EVCSs) on two main indicators of the distribution system is proposed as follows: globally, referring to active power losses, and locally, referring to transformer aging. This paper indicates that there is an optimal value of reactive power coming from EV chargers at EVCSs by which active energy losses and transformer aging are reduced. The proposed methodology is based on relevant models for calculating power flows and transformer aging and appropriately takes into consider... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: ammonia nitrogen, catalyst, COD removal efficiency, supercritical water gasification, UDMH
Unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine (UDMH) is very toxic and hard to decompose in traditional ways. In this paper, the gasification of unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine (UDMH) in supercritical water was studied in a batch reactor under different conditions. The hydrogen production process of supercritical water gasification of UDMH in metal containers is a multiphase reaction process. The effects of reaction temperature, alkaline catalysts, residence time, and oxidation on gasification were systematically studied. COD and ammonia nitrogen of the residual liquid were tested. Results showed that the maximum molar fraction and yield of hydrogen were 87.0% and 97.9 mol/kg, respectively, with KOH at 600 °C, 23 MPa. The COD removal efficiency in relation to alkaline catalysts was in the following order: NaOH > Na2CO3 > KOH > K2CO3. The highest COD removal efficiency (up to 95%) can be obtained at the temperature of 600 °C, 23 MPa with NaOH as the catalyst, and a residence time of 20 min. Ammonia n... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cost of electricity, efficiency, green hydrogen, NSGA-II, Optimization, proton exchange membrane electrolyzer, wind energy modelling
In this paper, an optimal hybrid (wind and grid)-hydrogen energy system (H-HES) is proposed using multi-objective non-dominated sorting algorithm (NSGA-II) optimization. The H-HES consists of the main energy system; wind-energy system (W-ES), which supplies a proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer via an energy management system (EMS) and a rectifier. In addition, the grid-energy system (G-ES) is available to support the W-ES to meet the PEM electrolyzer’s energy demand, and the EMS facilitates control between the W-ES and G-ES. The W-ES is modelled using wind data from Wind Atlas South Africa (WASA) for six Renewable Energy Development Zones (REDZs) in South Africa and their appropriate wind turbine models. The selection of appropriate wind turbine models is guided by the optimal wind turbine variables obtained from NSGA-II corresponding to the optimal H-HES model. The optimal H-HES model is developed using two objective functions: cost of electricity and efficiency, which are mi... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: hysteresis, pulse-width modulation (PWM), total harmonics distortion (THD), unified power quality conditioner (UPQC), wind turbines
The Unified Power Quality Conditioner (UPQC) is one of the Custom Power devices (CP), and it mitigates both load current and supply voltage problems (voltage swells, sags, harmonics, etc.) simultaneously. By using CP, we are getting more familiar with renewable energy’s high penetration on the electrical grid because of its intermittent nature, which causes power flection. We are also using powered electronic devices, and non-linear loads produce harmonics that affect the voltage and current waveform. In this paper, a UPQC will be used with a sensitive load that is connected to a grid (grid−wind turbine) power system. The UPQC will operate under different disturbances such as phase-to-ground fault, non-linear load on the grid side, and non-linear load in parallel with the sensitive load, using pulse-width modulation and hysteresis as switching techniques. Simulation results using MATLAB/Simulink are used to compare the two pulsing-generating techniques and show that electrical power is... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: ammonia–water-based absorption refrigeration, exhaust gas heat recovery, machine-learning algorithms, prediction, quantitative control of refrigeration output
The output of the absorption refrigeration system driven by exhaust gas is unstable and the efficiency is low. Therefore, it is necessary to keep the performance of absorption refrigeration systems in a stable state. This will help predict the dynamic parameters of the system and thus control the output of the system. This paper presents a machine-learning algorithm for predicting the key parameters of an ammonia−water absorption refrigeration system. Three new machine-learning algorithms, Elman, BP neural network (BPNN), and extreme learning machine (ELM), are tested to predict the system parameters. The key control parameters of the system are predicted according to the exhaust gas parameters, and the cooling system is adjusted according to the predicted values to achieve the goal of stable cooling output. After comparison, the ELM algorithm has a fast learning speed, good generalization performance, and small test set error sum, so it is selected as the final optimal prediction algo... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: capacity fade, cyclable lithium loss, electrolyte depletion, lithium-ion battery, power fade
In this study, we present a modeling approach to estimate the combined effects of cyclable lithium loss and electrolyte depletion on the capacity and discharge power fades of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The LIB cell based on LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 (NCM622) was used to model the discharge behavior in the multiple degradation modes. The discharge voltages for nine different levels of cyclable lithium loss and electrolyte depletion were measured experimentally. When there was no cyclable lithium loss, the 50% of electrolyte depletion brought about 5% reduction in discharge capacity at 0.05 C discharge rate, while it resulted in 46% reduction when it was coupled with 30% of cyclable lithium loss. The 50% of electrolyte depletion with no cyclable lithium loss caused 1% reduction in discharge power during 0.5 C discharge at the state of charge (SOC) level of 0.8, while it resulted in 13% reduction when it was coupled with 30% of cyclable lithium loss. Economic and Energy Performance of Heating and Ventilation Systems in Deep Retrofitted Norwegian Detached Houses
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: deep-energy retrofit, energy performance, heat pumps, life cycle costs
The aim of this study was to evaluate the life-cycle costs (LCC) and energy performance of different heating and ventilation systems (HVAC) in deep-energy renovation of Norwegian detached houses. Eight different HVAC combinations based on heat pumps are compared using two case buildings, with different performance levels for the building envelope. The case buildings are small wooden dwellings without a hydronic heating system, which is representative of existing Norwegian detached houses. The insulation level had only a limited effect on the relative performance of the various HVAC combinations. Many solutions with medium and higher investments have a payback time close to the technical lifetime. Uncertainty regarding investment costs is important and affects the relative performance between HVAC combinations. Electricity prices also have a decisive influence on the relative performance. Solutions with lower investment costs often lead to low total costs but higher energy use. However,... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: air quality, e-bus, energy consumption, GHG emissions, hydrogen bus, LCA
The study (a) assesses the life cycle energy consumption and air emissions impacts of battery electric buses (e-buses) and conventional buses operated in Vietnam, and (b) compares them with those of hydrogen buses. The results indicate that e-buses and hydrogen buses are preferred options compared to conventional buses in terms of energy consumption, GHG emissions and other air quality impacts over their whole life cycle. Life cycle energy consumption of diesel buses is triple that of e-buses, and is significantly higher than that of hydrogen buses. Replacing conventional buses with e-buses can reduce energy consumption by 50%. For GHG emissions and air quality impacts, the adoption of electric and hydrogen mobility in replacement of conventional buses will reduce GHG emissions by 39%, and other impacts related to air quality by 13% to 90%.

Earth-to-air heat exchangers (EAHEs) are widely used to reduce the indoor temperature and associated cooling energy demand of buildings. This study investigated the potential reduction in indoor temperatures via energy-efficient ventilation through EAHEs in an existing architectural campus building (ACB) with an energy-efficient renovated building envelope in the hot and humid climate of Karachi, Pakistan. The building information modeling (BIM) program Autodesk Revit was used to develop a virtual ACB BIM model. An EnergyPlus parametric analysis of the ACB BIM model in DesignBuilder facilitated quantification of the influences of operating parameters such as pipe installation depth and pipe diameter for EAHEs with similar total pipe lengths and air-exchange rates on the performance of the EAHEs during the cooling season. A 3 m deep and 0.1 m diameter pipe layout in open space significantly reduces indoor temperature via a specific duct layout in an exemplary ACB. The results show that... [more]

Effects of Radial and Circumferential Flows on Power Density Improvements of Tubular Solid Oxide Fuel Cells
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electrochemical reactions, mass transfer, radial and circumferential flows, solid oxide fuel cell
Improving the power density of SOFC stacks will accelerate their integration into mobile applications. We developed a 3D Multiphysics model validated by experimental results from early studies to examine the effect of radial and circumferential flows on the power density improvements in a micro-tubular SOFC. The inserts were placed inside the fuel channel to generate flow in different directions. The effects of geometric parameters of these inserts on flow and mass transfer in the fuel channel and porous anode were analyzed. We demonstrate that the radial flow enables the fuel to penetrate directly into the porous anode, increasing the local fuel concentration and enhancing the fuel diffusion to the anode triple-phase boundaries. We found that the circumferential flow has a negligible effect on the diffusion process in the anode and on the increase in power density. The impact of local convective and diffusive mass transfer mechanisms on power density improvement is analyzed using the... [more]

Keywords: anaerobic digestion, bioelectrochemical technology, methane production, open circuit voltage, primary sewage sludge
Anaerobic digestion (AD) can produce renewable energy and reduce carbon emissions, but the energy conversion efficiency is still limited in some waste streams. This study tested the effect of applied voltage removal for microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) treating primary sewage sludge. Two MECs were operated in parallel: a MEC-0.3 V with an applied voltage of 0.3 V and a MEC-OCV with open circuit voltage. Both reactors were inoculated with seed sludge originating from a MEC at 0.3 V applied voltage, and three batch cycles were operated for 36 d. The methane production of the MEC-OCV was 3759 mL/L in the first cycle and 2759 mL/L in the second cycle, which was similar (105% and 103%, respectively) to that of the MEC-0.3 V. However, in the third cycle, the methane production of the MEC-OCV (1762 mL/L) was 38.8% lower than that of the MEC-0.3 V (4545 mL/L). The methane contents in the biogas were 68.6−74.2% from the MEC-OCV, comparable to those from the MEC-0.3 V (66.6−71.1%). These resu... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: decentralised façade ventilation units, storage heat exchangers for heat recovery, thermal comfort
Thermal comfort affects not only the well-being of the occupants of a building but also the effectiveness of their learning and work efficiency. It can be disturbed if the ventilation airflow is increased when improving indoor air quality. When natural ventilation is used in the fall and winter period, the supply air temperature is low, resulting in a lack of thermal comfort. In existing buildings, there is often no place for mechanical ventilation; hence, decentralised façade ventilation units are increasingly used. The article presents an analysis of thermal comfort in rooms with this type of unit equipped with heat recovery exchangers of different efficiencies. Studies have shown that the alternating supply/exhaust airflow and the related unevenness of air streams flowing through the heat accumulator cause an inflow of low-temperature air, resulting in thermal discomfort. Mining-induced hydromechanical behavior of sandstone is critical to mining safety and disaster prevention. To investigate the evolution behavior of the mechanical and permeability properties of sandstone, mining-induced stress was imitated by increasing axial stress and decreasing confining stress, and a set of hydromechanical experiments were further performed, incorporating the effect of in situ stress, pore pressure, and mining stress. The results show the similar variation tendencies of the deformation and permeability of sandstone under different loading paths of in situ stress and pore pressure. Most sandstone samples maintain a compression state for the peak stress condition. The failure mode evolved from shear failure to shear−tension failure with the increase in in situ stress. The stress-relief effect significantly effects the permeability, since the permeability of sandstone increases exponentially with decreasing effective confining stress. ABE can be used as an alternative fuel for engines. This paper studies the combustion and emission performances of an SI engine with GPI plus ABEDI at different engine speeds and loads. The engine operating conditions included speeds of 1000−2600 rpm at the MAP = 50 kPa and loads of MAP = 30−70 kPa at a speed of 1800 rpm. The ABEDIr contained 0%, 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100%. At speeds = 1000−1800 or 2200−2600 rpm, the testing results showed the ABEDIr corresponding to the maximum IMEP at 80% or 100%. When the ABEDIr = 60%, HC and NOx emissions were the lowest at speeds of 1000−2600 rpm. Meanwhile, NPN and APN both decreased with the increasing of ABEDIr. As the MAP increased, CA0-90 decreased. At different loads, ABE-added fuels had lower HC and NOx emissions and higher IMEP values than pure gasoline. PN was lower than 4 × 104 n/cm3 when the ABEDIr was over 80%. The regenerator plays an extremely important role in the Stirling circulation. A grid regenerator can be used for inverse Stirling machines at room temperature due to its low flow resistance. This paper proposes a hexagonal grid regenerator to theoretically explore heat transfer properties in the inverse Stirling cycle and establishes an approximate analytical model to analyze the effect mechanism of working frequency, thermal diffusivity and wall thickness on the oscillation flow. The results show that the wall thickness is one of the key factors affecting the equivalent heat transfer coefficient. Specifically, too small or too large wall thickness increases the instability of the heat transfer process. The ultimate wall thickness is determined by the equivalent heat transfer coefficient and thermal penetration depth, whose optimal value ensures not only sufficient heat exchange but also the full utilization of materials.
