Excess Energy from PV-Battery System Installations: A Case of Rural Health Center in Tigray, Ethiopia
Mulu Bayray Kahsay, Johan Lauwaert
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: excess energy, health center, PV system, rural electricity, thermal storage
PV-Battery systems are commonly sized based on the lowest solar radiation of the site of implementation. This implies that during days of high solar radiation excess energy is available. This study investigated the potential of excess energy for thermal storage from PV systems for a case of a rural health center. The system components of a typical PV installation in a rural health center in Tigray, Ethiopia, were considered. The electricity load profile of the health center and solar radiation data available from Mekelle city were used as inputs to a TRNSYS model. Analysis of excess energy in the system at hourly and ten-minute time intervals was conducted. The analysis results indicate that during the months from September to May excess energy was available that could be thermally stored and utilized. During these months, the excess peak power ranged from 737 to 841 W and daily average excess energy ranged from 2070 to 2959 Wh. In contrast, in the months from June to August, no excess... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: behavior change, energy consumption, human-behavior representation, virtual choreograhies
Reducing office buildings’ energy consumption can contribute significantly towards carbon reduction commitments since it represents ∼40% of total energy consumption. Major components of this are lighting, electrical equipment, heating, and central cooling systems. Solid evidence demonstrates that individual occupants’ behaviors impact these energy consumption components. In this work, we propose the methodology of using virtual choreographies to identify and prioritize behavior-change interventions for office users based on the potential impact of specific behaviors on energy consumption. We studied the energy-related office behaviors of individuals by combining three sources of data: direct observations, electricity meters, and computer logs. Data show that there are behaviors with significant consumption impact but with little potential for behavioral change, while other behaviors have substantial potential for lowering energy consumption via behavioral change.

Keywords: biochemical technologies, chemical process, contaminated soils, degraded soils, energy potential, forest crops, herbaceous species, marginal soils, microalgae culture, thermochemical process
Energy crops are dedicated cultures directed for biofuels, electricity, and heat production. Due to their tolerance to contaminated lands, they can alleviate and remediate land pollution by the disposal of toxic elements and polymetallic agents. Moreover, these crops are suitable to be exploited in marginal soils (e.g., saline), and, therefore, the risk of land-use conflicts due to competition for food, feed, and fuel is reduced, contributing positively to economic growth, and bringing additional revenue to landowners. Therefore, further study and investment in R&D is required to link energy crops to the implementation of biorefineries. The main objective of this study is to present a review of the potential of selected energy crops for bioenergy and biofuels production, when cultivated in marginal/degraded/contaminated (MDC) soils (not competing with agriculture), contributing to avoiding Indirect Land Use Change (ILUC) burdens. The selected energy crops are Cynara cardunculus, Arundo... [more]

Xiangji Dou, Sujin Hong, Zhen Tao, Jiahao Lu, Guoqiang Xing
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: adsorption and desorption, fracture reorientation, refracturing treatment, shale gas reservoir, transient pressure and rate behavior
Refracturing treatment is widely used to enhance the well productivity in shale gas reservoirs, particularly for initially fractured wells with low productivity. The principal of this work is based on the transient behavior of pressure and rate for a vertically refractured well in a shale gas reservoir, considering the fracture reorientation and adsorption and desorption property. Based on the point-source theory and Laplace transform, a semi-analytical solution for a refractured well is obtained by coupling the point-source solution of a shale gas reservoir and the solution of artificial fractures. The validation of this new solution is carried out smoothly by comparison with the results from the commercial software COMSOL. Five typical flow regimes are identified on the transient pressure curve, namely bi-linear flow regime, formation linear flow regime, mid-radial flow regime, inter-porosity flow regime, and pseudo-radial flow regime. A groove segment occurs on the transient-pressur... [more]

Keywords: correlation, heat transfer coefficient, multiport mini-channel, pressure drop, R448A
Regulations and restrictions against high global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants have been introduced to encourage the adoption of environmentally friendly refrigerants and mitigate the environmental impact of the HVAC industry. R448A, a zeotropic blend with a GWP of 1390, has recently been proposed as a drop-in replacement for R404A and R410A in commercial systems. In this study, the heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop characteristics of R448A within a multiport mini-channel tube were experimentally investigated. The experimental ranges of the mass and heat fluxes were 100 to 500 kg/(m2s) and 3−15 kW/m2, respectively. Additionally, the range of quality from 0 to 1 was considered at two fixed saturated temperatures of 3 and 6 °C. The heat transfer coefficient increased with mass flux. Under low mass flux condition, the heat flux increased the heat transfer coefficient, but there was no noticeable effect of the saturated temperature on the heat transfer coefficient. At high... Keywords: accommodation capability, fluctuation, integrated energy system, multi-time period, optimal dispatch model, renewable energy generation
With the target of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality, renewable energy generation (REG) develops rapidly. The increasing penetration of REG brings along the problems of fluctuation in power flow and the possible abandonment of wind and photovoltaics (PV) generation. In this context, the so-called integrated energy system (IES) becomes a promising solution to the accommodation of REG thanks to energy storage systems and coupling devices inside. In this paper, the optimal operation model of an IES is first presented, with the schemes of green certificate trading and carbon emission right trading included to provide economic incentives for accommodating REG. Next, in order to address the problem of uncertainty in REG, the devices in the IES are divided into three types based on regulation flexibility, and a multi-time period optimal dispatching scheme is proposed, including day-ahead optimal scheduling, rolling optimal dispatching, and real-time control strategy. Finally, it is demonst... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: functional Petri net, integrated energy systems, transportation, vulnerability cascade propagation
In order to solve the vulnerability problem of the integrated energy system in the transportation industry, a vulnerability cascade propagation model based on the Petri net is proposed. The article comprehensively considers the configuration of the energy system, constructs the cascade propagation-based function Petri net model using a hierarchical modelling approach, and performs vulnerability cascade propagation analysis using Matlab on this basis. However, the integrated energy system of the transportation industry is complex and extensive, and it is not easy to model the Petri network of the whole transportation industry, which will be continued in-depth in the subsequent research. The study results show that the energy system’s vulnerability keeps changing with the growth of time, and the factors in maintaining the equilibrium vary from one subsystem to another. In addition, the ringed structure is more vulnerable compared to the acyclic structure, and the vulnerability cascade pr... [more]

Keywords: digital-twin model, energy consumption forecasting, residential building energy consumption, time series forecasting
The aim of the paper is to propose a new approach to forecast the energy consumption for the next day using the unique data obtained from a digital twin model of a building. In the research, we tested which of the chosen forecasting methods and which set of input data gave the best results. We tested naive methods, linear regression, LSTM and the Prophet method. We found that the Prophet model using information about the total energy consumption and real data about the energy consumption of the top 10 energy-consuming devices gave the best forecast of energy consumption for the following day. In this paper, we also presented a methodology of using decision trees and a unique set of conditional attributes to understand the errors made by the forecast model. This methodology was also proposed to reduce the number of monitored devices. The research that is described in this article was carried out in the context of a project that deals with the development of a digital twin model of a bui... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cracks, hotspots, photovoltaics, PV performance analysis, reliability analysis
The accurate prediction of the performance output of photovoltaic (PV) installations is becoming ever more prominent. Its success can provide a considerable economic benefit, which can be adopted in maintenance, installation, and when calculating levelized cost. However, modelling the long-term performance output of PV modules is quite complex, particularly because multiple factors are involved. This article investigates the available literature relevant to the modelling of PV module performance drop and failure. A particular focus is placed on cracks and hotspots, as these are deemed to be the most influential. Thus, the key aspects affecting the accuracy of performance simulations were identified and the perceived relevant gaps in the literature were outlined. One of the findings demonstrates that microcrack position, orientation, and the severity of a microcrack determines its impact on the PV cell’s performance. Therefore, this aspect needs to be categorized and considered accordin... [more]

Carlos Quiñones, Guillermo Araya
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: crossflow jet, DNS, passive scalar, turbulent boundary layer
The interaction of a turbulent, spatially developing crossflow with a transverse jet possesses several engineering and technological applications such as film cooling of turbine blades, exhaust plumes, thrust vector control, fuel injection, etc. Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) of a jet in a crossflow under different streamwise pressure gradients (zero and favorable pressure gradient) is carried out. The purpose is to study the physics behind the transport phenomena and coherent structure dynamics in turbulent crossflow jets at different streamwise pressure gradients and low/high-velocity ratios (0.5 and 1). The temperature was regarded as a passive scalar with a molecular Prandtl number of 0.71. The analysis is performed by prescribing accurate turbulent information (instantaneous velocity and temperature) at the inlet of a computational domain. The upward motion of low-momentum fluid created by the “legs” of the counter-rotating vortex pair (CVP) encounters the downward inviscid flo... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy storage hydraulic fracturing, fracturing fluid, tight oil reservoir
Energy storage fracturing technology is a technical means by which oil displacement fluid is injected into the reservoir before the traditional hydraulic fracturing and subsequent implement fracturing. It provides a good solution for developing tight oil reservoirs. The efficiency of this technology significantly depends on the injection performance of the fracturing fluid, and the ability of its liquid phase to penetrate the formation. According to the needs of energy storage fracturing, four surfactants were selected. Then, based on the performance evaluation of the four surfactants, the compositions of two surfactant systems were determined. The performance of slickwater fracturing fluids for energy storage hydraulic fracturing was evaluated. The mechanism of tight oil displacement in energy storage hydraulic fracturing was analyzed. The results showed that the compositions of oil−displacement agents 1 and 2 for energy storage fracturing were successfully acquired. The performance o... [more]

Keywords: damping, electromechanical oscillations, grid-following, grid-forming, inertia, phase-locked loop, power converters, virtual synchronous machine
The oscillatory behaviour of the power system is an aspect that is significantly affected by the increasing integration of converter-based generation sources. Several works address the impact of non-synchronous generation on the operation of the system from different points of view, but only a few studies focus on power-frequency oscillations with a prevalence of generation sources interfaced through power electronics. A lack of research can be found in particular in the comparative analysis of the two main control strategies for power converters, namely grid-following and grid-forming. The article aims to contribute to this direction, starting from a theoretical analysis of the two control structures and then examining the case study of an existing transmission system. The research provides a specific insight into the fundamental aspects related to synchronisation mechanism and inertial capabilities of both grid-following with synthetic inertia and grid-forming controls. February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CO2 emissions, energy rebound effect, regional heterogeneity, system generalized method of moments
Enhancing energy efficiency is globally regarded as an effective way to reduce carbon emissions. In recent years, the energy efficiency of China has gradually improved; however, energy consumption and CO2 emissions are still increasing. To better understand the reasons for this, we evaluated the energy rebound effect (RE) of 30 provinces in China over the period 2001−2017 by employing stochastic frontier analysis (SFA) and the system generalized method of moments (system-GMM) approach, and explored the extent to which the RE affects CO2 emissions. Asymmetric and regional heterogeneity analyses were also conducted. The results indicate that the national average RE was 90.47% in the short run, and 78.17% in the long run, during the sample period. Most of the provinces experienced a partial RE, with a backfire effect occurring in some provinces such as Guangxi and Henan. The RE was associated with significant increases in CO2 emissions; specifically, a 1% increase in the short-run RE led... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: acoustic emission, gate turn-off thyristor, power electronics, sensor, transducer
The article presents the results of tests related to failure analysis and finding ways to diagnose used semiconductor elements, among others, in power electronics converter systems on vessels and offshore facilities (drilling and production rigs and wind turbines). Diagnostic relationships were found between the temperature change in the above systems and the signals generated in the form of elastic waves of acoustic emission. The authors confirmed the influence of the transistor’s working temperature on its amplitude-frequency spectrum of acoustic emission signals emitted. The range of ‘safe temperatures’ was considered which means temperatures that do not directly affect the damage of the component.

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: carbon–carbon double bond component crude oil, coalescence behavior, emulsified oil droplets, emulsion, saturated hydrocarbon component crude oil
The microscopic interactions between oil droplets during the coalescence process have an important impact on the stability of the emulsion. In this paper, a model that can present the phenomenon of coalescence of oil droplets was established. Experiments were carried out to evaluate the stability of the emulsion. Combined with molecular dynamics simulation technology, the coalescence behaviors of emulsified oil droplets in fluids produced by oil wells were studied. Factors affecting the coalescence of emulsified oil droplets were analyzed. The results show that the fluid velocity was relatively high at the position where two oil droplets were close to each other. After the coalescence of oil droplets was completed, the emulsion system became stable. There was no obvious correlation between oil droplet size and coalescence time. When two adjacent oil droplets with different radii coalesced, the larger oil droplet moved a shorter distance overall. At the initial moment, there was a clear... [more]

Keywords: appliances, energy consumption, Energy Efficiency, energy label, in-depth interviews, purchasing decision-making
The EU Energy Efficiency (EE) label for appliances, readjusted in March 2021 (Directive 2017/1369/EU), is a key instrument for nudging consumers towards more energy-efficient purchases. However, its effectiveness depends on its design, the information provided and consumers’ understanding of and trust in it. This paper seeks to contribute to the assessment of the EE label for appliances and to identify issues, potential improvements and challenges for successfully nudging consumers towards highly energy-efficient choices. To that end, 33 in-depth interviews have been conducted with three different groups (citizens, appliance retailers and experts in energy) to ascertain the opinions and experiences of different agents as to consumers’ preferences and opinions on EE and energy consumption. We focus on purchasing decision-making by Spanish consumers for the three main appliances: washing machines, fridges and dishwashers. The EE label for appliances seems to be well-known and reliable fo... [more]

Keywords: annular jet, heat transfer enhancement, jet impingement, nozzle shape modification, pressure loss
The effects of nozzle shape modifications on the flow phenomena and heat transfer characteristics in annular jet impingement are investigated numerically. The numerical simulations are conducted applying the shear stress transport (SST) k−ω model in the ANSYS CFX. Two modified nozzles: the converging nozzle and the diverging nozzle, are investigated in this study, and the straight nozzle serves as the base case. The geometric parameters and settings are based on an annular jet ejected from an axial fan used for electronic cooling: the Reynolds number Re= 20,000 and the blockage ratio Br=0.35 in the computation, and the target plate is placed at three representative separation distances: H=0.5,2, and 4. Compared with the base nozzle, the converging nozzle can accelerate the cooling flow and promote turbulence to enhance local and overall heat transfer (about 20%) over the target surface. In addition, the converging nozzle reduces the sizes of the recirculation zones, and this promotes t... [more]

Keywords: boiling curve, conjugate heat transfer, eulerian two-fluid model, immersion quenching, partitioned coupling, stability
Boiling conjugate heat transfer is an active field of research encountered in several industries, including metallurgy, power generation and electronics. This paper presents a computational fluid dynamics approach capable of accurately modelling the heat transfer and flow phenomena during immersion quenching: a process in which a hot solid is immersed into a liquid, leading to sudden boiling at the solid−liquid interface. The adopted methodology allows us to couple solid and fluid regions with very different physics, using partitioned coupling. The energy equation describes the solid, while the Eulerian two-fluid modelling approach governs the fluid’s behaviour. We focus on a film boiling heat transfer regime, yet also consider natural convection, nucleate and transition boiling. A detailed overview of the methodology is given, including an analytical description of the conjugate heat transfer between all three phases. The latter leads to the derivation of a fluid temperature and Biot... [more]

Keywords: energy consumption, energy generation, estimation, locomotive, railway track geometry
The energy consumption estimation of a locomotive for a particular route is important for the selection of a locomotive technology, the improvement of the energy management system, the evaluation of the locomotive’s potential energy generation, among others. The methodologies reported in the literature usually assume that the information of the railway track is available; however, in some cases, the track information is incomplete, not available, or the route is still in a planning stage. Therefore, this paper proposes a methodology to estimate the energy consumption and the potential energy generation of a locomotive when the railway track information is not available or incomplete. The methodology begins by extracting the main technical information of the locomotive to be analyzed. Then, the route is traced on Google Earth with steps of 100 m and the obtained information is processed to generate the longitude, latitude, elevation, and distance of the points along the route.
