March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: air-to-water electric heat pump, AWHP, building energy performance, Energy Efficiency, exhaust ventilation, hybrid heat source, primary energy, TRNSYS, waste heat
The paper presents an analysis of the application of an air-to-water electric compressor heat pump (AWHP) for the recovery of waste heat from the exhaust air in a typical multifamily residential building and the use of this heat for space heating, as well as the impact of this solution on the building energy performance (the PPR index). Simulations were performed in TRNSYS for five locations in Poland (Koszalin, Wrocław, Lublin, Białystok, Suwałki), for various heating system parameters (80/60 °C, 75/65 °C, 70/50 °C, 55/45 °C, 35/28 °C), for various temperature limitations of heat pump operation. It was shown that the analyzed system has great potential from an energy and environmental point of view. It can provide significant benefits in terms of the energy performance of the building, depending on the system parameters. The results show that the most energy-efficient system is the one with the lowest heating system temperatures. Moreover, implementing a temperature limitation on the... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: black-box model, driving mode, fuel consumption, gear, real traffic
Appropriate driving technique, in compliance with eco-driving principles, remains an effective method to reduce fuel consumption. The selection of the correct gear is one of the pertinent factors when driving a car with a manual gearbox. In this study we have analyzed fuel overconsumption based on data recorded in real traffic conditions for vehicles driven by experienced drivers, using a black-box model. It was found that the total share of trip time with a lower than optimal gear selected amounted to from c.a. 3% for motorway driving up to 28% on rural roads. The mean fuel consumption reduction factor (following selection of the next gear up) amounted to from c.a. 2% up to 20%, depending on the selected gear and type of driving. Unfortunately, the potential for reduction of fuel consumption is not evenly distributed over the entire operating area of the engine. Thus, the cumulative reduction of fuel consumption, due to selection of the optimal gear, amounted to from c.a. 0.2% for mot... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: blade tip, gas turbine, heat transfer, high speed condition
This study experimentally investigated the effects of cascade inlet velocity on the distribution and the level of the heat transfer coefficient on a gas turbine blade tip. The tests were conducted in a transient turbine test facility at Korea Aerospace University, and three cascade inlet velocities—30, 60, and 90 m/s—were considered. The heat transfer coefficient was measured using the transient IR camera technique with a linear regression method, and both the squealer and plane tips were investigated. The results showed that the overall averaged heat transfer coefficient was generally proportional to the inlet velocity. As the inlet velocity is increased from 30 m/s to 60 m/s and 90 m/s, the heat transfer coefficient increased by 11.4% and 25.0% for plane tip, and 26.6% and 64.1% for squealer tip, respectively. However, the heat transfer coefficient near the leading edge of the squealer tip and the reattachment region of the plane tip was greatly affected by the cascade inlet velocity... [more]

Keywords: analytic wavelet, instantaneous frequency, partial discharge, singular spectrum analysis, sinusoidal noise removal, synchrosqueezed transform, time frequency representation
In electrical engineering, partial discharge (PD) measurement has been widely used for inspecting and judging insulation conditions of high voltage (HV) apparatus. However, on-site PD measurement easily becomes contaminated by noises. Particularly, sinusoidal noise makes it difficult to recognize real PD signal, thus leading to the misjudgment of insulation conditions. Therefore, sinusoidal noise removal is necessary. In this paper, instantaneous frequency (IF) is introduced, and the synchrosqueezing transform (SST) as well as singular spectrum analysis (SSA) is proposed for sinusoidal noise removal. A continuous analytic wavelet transform is firstly applied to the noisy PD signal and then the time frequency representation (TFR) is reassigned by SST. Narrow-band sinusoidal noise has fixed IF, while PD signal has much larger frequency range and time-varying IF. Due to the difference, the reassigned TFR enables the sinusoidal noise to be distinguished from PD signal. After synthesizing t... [more]

Keywords: alternative energy sources, biogas, biomass systems, hydropower systems, photovoltaic systems, wind systems
Poland needs to fulfill its climate goals and become “climate neutral” by 2050. The plan is intricate for the Polish Government because coal-powered power plants generate about 80 percent of electricity in the country. Although policymakers are making an effort to redesign the energy sector, a lot still remains to be done. The viral trend in that transformation involves installing photovoltaic (PV) panels by private, corporate, and self-government investors. For example, the “My energy” support program of the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management has helped finance 220,000 micro-PV installations. The achievement is significant but constitutes only partial success. PV powerplants will not simply replace coal powerplants. That is why the research on the ecological distributed energy generation systems has to be executed. The article presents the research results on ecological distributed energy generation systems, making the transformation of the Polish energy s... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cluster analysis, energy transformation, renewable energy sources (RES), the new EU member states, Ward’s method
The European Union strives to create sustainable, low-carbon economies; therefore, energy policies of all member states should move towards renewable energy sources (RES). That concerns also the so-called new EU member states. These countries, on the one hand, are characterized by significant historical similarities in terms of post-communist legacy and adopted development strategies linked with the EU membership, and on the other hand, by significant social, economic and environmental differences resulting from different transformation and development paths and conditions. The question remains how the selected countries should cope with actions in the field of national energy transformations to confront the multiple challenges linked to assuring a significant level of sustainable development. In order to be successful, it is necessary to conduct an effective and rapid changes in the energy industry, which should be preceded by an analysis of the differentiation of countries in terms o... March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: free vortex, hydro turbine, power plant, response surface methodology
In this research paper, the relationship between a crossflow turbine and propeller turbine size changes and the pond size in a free vortex power generation system was investigated. This relationship can be written in the form of a new mathematical equation using the principles of the response surface methodology (RSM) method. This study aimed to compare the efficiency of a crossflow turbine and propeller turbine to enhance a micro power plant from free vortex. The pond size in a micro power plant from free vortex was 1 m in diameter and 0.5 m in height with a 0.2 m outlet drain at the bottom. All turbines were tested at different water flowrates of 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, and 0.6 m3/s to identify the rpm, water head, voltage, and electric current to access the waterpower, power output, and overall efficiency. At a 0.02 m3/s water flowrate, the crossflow turbine had greater overall efficiency than the propeller turbine, reaching 9.09% efficiency. From the comparison of the results of the tw... [more]

Keywords: heat storage, high temperature aquifer thermal energy storage (HT-ATES), multi-energy system, sustainable heating
In the energy transition, multi-energy systems are crucial to reduce the temporal, spatial and functional mismatch between sustainable energy supply and demand. Technologies as power-to-heat (PtH) allow flexible and effective utilisation of available surplus green electricity when integrated with seasonal heat storage options. However, insights and methods for integration of PtH and seasonal heat storage in multi-energy systems are lacking. Therefore, in this study, we developed methods for improved integration and control of a high temperature aquifer thermal energy storage (HT-ATES) system within a decentralized multi-energy system. To this end, we expanded and integrated a multi-energy system model with a numerical hydro-thermal model to dynamically simulate the functioning of several HT-ATES system designs for a case study of a neighbourhood of 2000 houses. Results show that the integration of HT-ATES with PtH allows 100% provision of the yearly heat demand, with a maximum 25% smal... [more]

Keywords: CARNOT, electric two-wheeled vehicle, Lake Victoria, model, off-grid, photovoltaic, Water-Energy Hub
In both rural and urban areas, two-wheeler vehicles are the most common means of transportation, contributing to local air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). Transitioning to electric two-wheeler vehicles can help reduce GHG emissions while also increasing the socioeconomic status of people in rural Kenya. Renewable energy systems can play a significant role in charging electric two-wheeled vehicles, resulting in lower carbon emissions and increased renewable energy penetration in rural Kenya. As a result, using the Conventional and Renewable Energy Optimization (CARNOT) Toolbox in the MATLAB/Simulink environment, this paper focuses on integrating and modeling electric two-wheeled vehicles (e-bikes) into an off-grid photovoltaic Water-Energy Hub located in the Lake Victoria Region of Western Kenya. Electricity demand data obtained from the Water-Energy Hub was investigated and analyzed. Potential solar energy surplus was identified and the surplus was used to incorporate the... [more]

Keywords: battery thermal management system, electric vehicle, lattice Boltzmann method, Optimization
Temperature management for battery packs installed in electric vehicles is crucial to ensure that the battery works properly. For lithium-ion battery cells, the optimal operating temperature is in the range of 25 to 40 °C with a maximum temperature difference among battery cells of 5 °C. This work aimed to optimize lithium-ion battery packing design for electric vehicles to meet the optimal operating temperature using an air-cooling system by modifying the number of cooling fans and the inlet air temperature. A numerical model of 74 V and 2.31 kWh battery packing was simulated using the lattice Boltzmann method. The results showed that the temperature difference between the battery cells decreased with the increasing number of cooling fans; likewise, the mean temperature inside the battery pack decreased with the decreasing inlet air temperature. The optimization showed that the configuration of three cooling fans with 25 °C inlet air temperature gave the best performance with low powe... [more]

Keywords: energy harvesting, fractional open-circuit voltage (FOCV), light-dependent resistor (LDR), maximum power point tracking (MPPT), perovskite solar cell (PSC), sample and hold circuit (S&H)
The performance of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) has been improved throughout the years. These photovoltaic (PV) cells can be used to power Internet of Things (IoT) devices for indoor applications. A perovskite PV energy harvesting system with a stand-by battery that continuously powers an IoT device is developed in this work. The battery is required to complement the PSCs when the latter have difficulties in power delivery during low or no irradiance. The performance of the energy harvesting circuit as well as the battery charge and discharge scenarios are investigated. Voltage matching between the PSC and the battery is achieved by a boost converter. The PSC energy harvesting system uses fractional open-circuit voltage (FOCV) based maximum power point tracking (MPPT), which utilizes a Sample and Hold (S&H) circuit. The FOCV technique is based on a comparison of the perovskite PV open circuit voltages and the maximum power points. For each irradiance level, the maximum power point is... [more]

Keywords: electric mobility, forecasting for FCEV, fuel cell vehicles, Hydrogen, plug-in hybrid, predictive model, socio-technical transition
In recent years, the growing concern for air quality has led to the development of sustainable vehicles to replace conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. Currently, the most widespread technology in Europe and Portugal is that of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) or plug-in HEV (PHEV) electric cars, but hydrogen-based transport has also shown significant growth in the commercialization of Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEV) and in the development of new infrastructural schemes. In the current panorama of EV, particular attention should be paid to hydrogen technology, i.e., FCEVs, which is potentially a valid alternative to BEVs and can also be hybrid (FCHEV) and plug-in hybrid (FCPHEV). Several sources cited show a positive trend of hydrogen in the transport sector, identifying a growing trend in the expansion of hydrogen infrastructure, although at this time, it is still at an early stage of development. At the moment, the cost of building the infrastructure is still hig... [more]

Keywords: bifacial, degradation, mismatch, photovoltaic, PV failure, shading effect
An evaluation of the degradation effects on photovoltaic modules is essential to minimise uncertainties in the system operation. Bifacial photovoltaic technology is attracting attention due to the capacity of generating energy from the front and rear sides. This paper presents a review of degradation factors, for both conventional monofacial and bifacial photovoltaic modules, to highlight how the current and voltage characteristics of these technologies are affected by degradation. Microcracking, encapsulant discoloration, and light induced degradation seem to have similar effects on both modules. Contrarily, bifacial modules are more prone to potential induced degradation as the electromagnetic shielding is affected by the bifaciality. Bifacial devices are less affected by light and elevated temperature induced degradation. The degradation (1.3%) is similar for both technologies, up to 40 kWh/m2 of solar radiation. Above this value, monofacial degradation increases faster, reaching va... [more]

In space vehicles, the typical configurations for the Solar Array Power Regulators in charge of managing power transfer from the solar array to the power bus are quite different from the corresponding devices in use for terrestrial applications. A thorough analysis is reported for the most popular approaches, namely Sequential Switching Shunt Regulation and parallel-input Pulse Width Modulated converters with Maximum Power Point Tracking. Their performance is compared with reference to a typical mission in low Earth orbit, highlighting the respective strengths and weaknesses. A novel solar array managing technique, the Sequential Maximum Power Tracking, is also introduced in the trade-off and was demonstrated able to boost energy harvesting, especially in the presence of mismatching in the solar array. It also can achieve top levels of reliability using a rather simple control hardware. Its operation was verified both by a Matlab−Simulink model and by an experimental breadboard.

Keywords: EnergyPlus, ground heat exchanger, KIVA, load-handled ratio, thermally activated building system
The thermally activated building system (TABS) can reduce the peak load by integrating with the ground heat exchangers. When integrated, the cost of groundwork and stability of the ground temperature would counteract because the weather conditions would influence the ground temperature in shallow depth. However, previous studies on TABS assumed constant ground temperatures such as average outdoor air temperature. In this study, ground temperatures in different depths are simulated for their detailed investigations, and simulated results of ground temperature were applied to building energy simulations for observing the load-handled ratio (LHR), representing the peak load reduction by TABS evaluated in various weather conditions. Simulation results of ground temperatures from 1 m to 39 m depths show that the temperature stabilized at 2 m to 11 m depths depending on the characteristics of the outdoor air temperature. LHR increased as the ground depth increased because the ground temperat... [more]

Keywords: CO2 emission reduction, control strategy, off-design operation, offshore heat, process modelling and simulation, thermal efficiency
Power cycles on offshore oil and gas installations are expected to operate more at varied load conditions, especially when rapid growth in renewable energies puts them in a load-following operation. Part-load efficiency enhancement is advantageous since heat to power cycles suffer poor efficiency at part loads. The overall purpose of this article is to improve part-load efficiency in offshore combined cycles. Here, the organic Rankine bottoming cycle with a control strategy based on variable geometry turbine technology is studied to boost part-load efficiency. The Variable Area Nozzle turbine is selected to control cycle mass flow rate and pressure ratio independently. The design and performance of the proposed working strategy are assessed by an in-house developed tool. With the suggested solution, the part-load organic Rankine cycle efficiency is kept close to design value outperforming the other control strategies with sliding pressure, partial admission turbine, and throttling valv... March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: diesel engine, emissions, tire pyrolysis oil, waste based fuel
Due to the world’s growing population, the size of areas intended for food production in many countries of the world can only be achieved through severe environmental damage and deforestation, which has many other detrimental consequences in addition to accelerating global warming. By replacing the bio-content of fuels with other alternative fuels, land that is used for energy crops can also be used to grow food, thus mitigating the damaging effects of deforestation. Waste-based tire pyrolysis oil (TPO) can be a promising solution to replace the bio-proportion of diesel fuel. Since it is made from waste tires, it is also an optimal solution for recycling waste. This research shows the effect of different low-volume-percent tire pyrolyzed oil blended with diesel on the performance, fuel consumption, and emissions on a Mitsubishi S4S-DT industrial diesel engine. Four different premixed ratios of TPO were investigated (2.5%, 5%, 7.5% and 10%) as well as pyrolysis oil and 100% diesel oil;... [more]

Currently, the growing need for efficient refrigeration resources in the industrial sector has led to an increasing interest in finding technologies with a higher heat removal potential and better cooling performance. Along these lines, two-phase liquid cooling appears to be a very interesting solution, with the CLTPT (closed-loop two-phase thermosyphon) being one of the leading alternatives. Most works in the scientific literature study loop thermosyphons that work in flow boiling conditions in steady state. The present paper analyzes the transient thermal behavior of a pool boiling CLTPT gravitational channel as a passive cooling system using NOVEC 649 as working fluid. The evaporator works with two submerged cylindrical heaters that represent different heat sources located in different positions. The initial transient behavior and consequent instabilities of a laboratory-scale facility were studied, followed by a stability analysis for various power inputs. Parameters such as temper... [more]

Keywords: ash content, biorefinery, farmer, optimal nitrogen, switchgrass
This study analyzes the effects of N fertilizer application rates on profitability of growing switchgrass and using the feedstock in a pyrolysis biorefinery facility to create a source of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) supply in Tennessee. Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) is a perennial bunchgrass native to North America with traits suitable for biofuel and co-product production. Previous chemical analysis has shown that ash content in switchgrass is related to the amount of nitrogen applied to the field, while at the biorefinery level, the percentage ash content reduces the biorefinery fuel output. To obtain optimal nitrogen (N) application rates for the switchgrass producers and the biorefinery, a two-part analysis is employed. First, a partial budgeting profitability analysis is conducted for this cropping enterprise at the farm-gate level without considering downstream implications of biomass quality, i.e., ash content. Second, the effects of higher ash content as a percentage of... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Energy Efficiency, household energy consumption, rebound effect, renewable generation
Reducing household energy consumption is one of the most important strategies used to decrease fossil fuel consumption and greenhouse gases emissions, and to encourage renewable energy utilization. Most energy conservation strategies in the domestic sector are aimed at preferential loans, i.e., purchasing renewable electricity or to improve the efficiency of home appliances, such as air conditioning and lighting. However, despite the relative economic successes of these technologies, they have not had expected impacts in regard to energy consumption. In this work, the authors analyzed the consumption patterns of two equivalent households—one was adapted with improved thermal insulation and a 1.2 kW photovoltaic system to reduce consumption from the electrical grid. The results show that dwellings where no improvements were made registered lower electric energy consumption, due the fact that users were aware that no strategy had been implemented, and its consumption; hence, electricity... Keywords: different oil film thickness, hydro-viscous clutch, hydro-viscous drive, multi-friction plates, torque formula
Hydro-viscous clutch is a speed-regulating device for heavy fans and water pumps. It has important engineering significance in the fields of soft-start for rotating machinery. More and more attention has been paid to its torque and control characteristics. This paper is focused on the torque formula for hydro-viscous clutch (HVC), assuming that multi-friction plates distribute ununiformly with different oil film thickness. A mathematical model of friction plates was constructed, then the distribution formula of the oil film thickness was obtained. A new expression was presented using a modified factor. Parameters such as pressure, viscous torque, and oil film thickness were obtained. The results show that each clearance of friction plates is not the same and the distribution of oil film thickness is influenced by pressing force, groove depth, angular ratio of groove/non-groove, and static friction force. To verify the proposed expression, relevant experiments were carried out on an HVC... [more]
