Thermal Performance of Cemented Paste Backfill Body Considering Its Slurry Sedimentary Characteristics in Underground Backfill Stopes
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: backfilled stope, CPB, heat transfer, sedimentary characteristic, thermophysical property.
The combined mine backfill−geothermal (CMBG) system can be used to effectively extract geothermal energy by installing a heat exchange tube (HET) in the underground backfilled stopes of mines, which can be used as the heat supply for buildings in mines and the surrounding areas. The efficient performance of this system strongly depends on the thermal exchange process between the HET and its surrounding cemented paste backfill body (CPB). In this study, a validated simulation model is established to investigate the heat exchange performance of CPB, in which the nonuniformly distributed thermal properties in CPB are fully considered. The results indicate that the increase in the porosity has a negative effect on the heat exchange performance of CPB. With the increase in the porosity, the decreased rate of the conductive heat transfer in CPB could be up to approximately 18%. In conditions with seepage flow, the heat transfer capacity of CPB could be effectively improved. Generally, a high... [more]

Experimental Investigation of the Ash Deposition Characteristics of Biomass Pretreated by Ash Removal during Co-Combustion with Sub-Bituminous Coal
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: alkali, ash removal, capture efficiency, drop tube furnace, energy based growth rate, kenaf, pretreatment, thinning wood, underexploited biomass.
Although replacing biomass, (e.g., wood chips and pellets), with thinning wood and herbaceous biomass is eco-friendly and economically advantageous, their direct utilization in plant boilers is associated with ash-related challenges, including slagging and fouling. The aim of this study is to determine the effects of ash removal treatment (ashless biomass (ALB)) in the context of solid fuel power plant boilers. Ash was removed via neutralization of metal ions and carboxylic acids contained in the biomass ash. The ash removal rate of K, Na, Cl was indicated by assessing the total biomass before and after ash removal treatment, via XRF analysis. Co-combustion with sub-bituminous coal and ALB-treated biomass was analyzed using a drop tube furnace and revealed that NOx and SOx values converged converge toward an approximate 10 ppm error, whereas the Unburned Carbon (UBC) data did not exhibit a specific trend. Factors associated with slagging and fouling, (capture efficiency (CE), and energ... [more]

The Prospect of Combining a Point Absorber Wave Energy Converter with a Floating Offshore Wind Turbine
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: offshore floating wind energy, Wave Energy, wave-structure interactions.
With recent advances in offshore floating wind and wave energy technology, questions have emerged as to whether the two technologies can be combined to reduce their overall levelised cost of energy. In this paper, the potential for combining a floating offshore wind turbine to a point absorbing wave energy converter is investigated. The focus of the investigation is how much power might be produced by a combined floating wind and wave energy converter system, and the resultant changes in motion of the floating wind platform. A model for the combined wave and wind system is developed which uses the standardised NREL OC3 5 MW spar type wind turbine and a cylindrical buoyant actuator (BA), which is attached to the spar via a generic wave power take-off system (modelled as a spring-damper system). Modelling is conducted in the frequency domain and the tests span a wide range of parameters, such as wave conditions, BA sizes, and power take-off coupling arrangements. It is found that the opt... Warm Plasma Application in Tar Conversion and Syngas Valorization: The Fate of Hydrogen Sulfide
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biomass gasification, microwave plasma, sulfur compounds.
Warm plasma techniques are considered a promising method of tar removal in biomass-derived syngas. The fate of another problematic syngas impurity—hydrogen sulfide—is studied in this work. It is revealed that processing simulated syngas with a microwave plasma results in hydrogen sulfide conversion. For different gas flow rates (20−40 NLPM) and hydrogen sulfide concentrations ranging from 250 ppm to 750 ppm, the conversion rate varies from ca. 26% to 45%. The main sulfur-containing products are carbon disulfide (ca. 30% of total sulfur) and carbonyl sulfide (ca. 8% of total sulfur). Besides them, significantly smaller quantities of sulfates and benzothiophene are also detected. The main components of syngas have a tremendous impact on the fate of hydrogen sulfide. While the presence of carbon monoxide, methane, carbon dioxide, and tar surrogate (toluene) leads to the formation of carbonyl sulfide, carbon disulfide, sulfur dioxide, and benzothiophene, respectively, the abundance of hydr... A Comprehensive Review of Small-Signal Stability and Power Oscillation Damping through Photovoltaic Inverters
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electromechanical oscillation, microgrid, photovoltaic inverter, power oscillation damping, small-signal stability, virtual synchronous generator.
This paper focuses on the methods that ensure the rotor angle stability of electric power systems, which is most frequently analyzed with small-signal models. Over the past several decades, power system stabilizers (PSSs) for conventional excitation systems were the main tools for improving the small-signal stability of electromechanical oscillatory modes. In the last decade, power oscillation damping (POD) control implemented in photovoltaic (PV) inverters has been considered an alternative to PSSs. As PV generation undergoes massive rollout due to policy directions and renewable energy source integration activities, it could potentially be used as a source of damping, which is crucial for sustaining the rotor angle stability of the remaining in-service synchronous generators. Several studies have already been dedicated to the development of different damping strategies. This paper contributes to the existing research in power system stability by providing a comprehensive review of th... [more]

Lab-Scale Carbonation of Wood Ash for CO2-Sequestration
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: anaerobic digestion, biogas upgrading, calcium oxide, carbon capture and storage (CCS), combustion, fertilizers, flue gas.
This study evaluated the CO2 sequestration potential with combustion ashes in the aqueous phase. The aim was to provide a cost-effective carbon sequestration method for combustion unit operators (flue gas cleaning) or biogas producers (biogas upgrading). Therefore, two separate test series were executed to identify the carbonation efficiency (CE) of bottom wood ash (1) at different mixing ratios with water in batch experiments and (2) under dynamic flow conditions. It was furthermore evaluated whether subsequent use of the carbonated wood ash for soil amendment could be possible and whether the process water could be passed into the sewage. The batch test series showed that different mixing ratios of wood ash and water had an influence on the CE. The flow series showed that the mean CE varied between approximately 14% and 17%. Thus, the ash proved to be suitable for carbonation processes. The process water was dischargeable, and the carbonated wood ash has potential for chalking, as no... [more]

March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: chaos, direct-drive permanent magnet synchronous generator (D-PMSG), fractional order nonlinear system (FONS), fuzzy control, Mittag–Leffler stability, uncertain parameters, wind turbine.
To research the chaotic motion problem of the direct-drive permanent magnet synchronous generator (D-PMSG) for a wind turbine with uncertain parameters and fractional order characteristics, a control strategy established upon fuzzy state feedback is proposed. Firstly, according to the working mechanism of D-PMSG, the Lorenz nonlinear mathematical model is established by affine transformation and time transformation. Secondly, fractional order nonlinear systems (FONSs) are transformed into linear sub-model by Takagi−Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy model. Then, the fuzzy state feedback controller is designed through Parallel Distributed Compensation (PDC) control principle to suppress the chaotic motion. By applying the fractional Lyapunov stability theory (FLST), the sufficient conditions for Mittag−Leffler stability are formulated in the format of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Finally, the control performance and effectiveness of the proposed controller are demonstrated through numerical simul... [more]

March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: bioenergy intermediate carriers, biooil gasification, circular economy, slow pyrolysis, Syngas, waste.
Waste-based feedstocks and bioenergy intermediate carriers are key issues of the whole bioenergy value chain. Towards a circular economy, changing upcycling infra-structure systems takes time, while energy-from-waste (EfW) technologies like waste pyrolysis and gasification could play an integral part. Thus, the aim of this study is to propose a circular economy pathway for the waste to energy (WtE) thermochemical technologies, through which solid biomass waste can be slowly pyrolyzed to biochar (main product), in various regionally distributed small plants, and the pyro-oils, by-products of those plants could be used as an intermediate energy carrier to fuel a central gasification plant for syngas production. Through the performed review, the main parameters of the whole process chain, from waste to syngas, were discussed. The study develops a conceptual model that can be implemented for overcoming barriers to the broad deployment of WtE solutions. The proposed model of WtE facilities... [more]

Effect of Semiconductor Parasitic Capacitances on Ground Leakage Current in Three-Phase Current Source Inverters
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: common mode, current source inverter, ground leakage current, parasitic capacitance, photovoltaic.
This paper investigates the influence of power semiconductor parasitic components on the ground leakage current in the three-phase Current Source Inverter topology, in the literature called H7 or CSI7. This topology allows reducing converter conduction losses with respect to the classic CSI, but at the same time makes the topology more susceptible to the parasitic capacitances of the semiconductors devices. In the present work, a grid-connected converter for photovoltaic power systems is considered as a case study, to investigate the equivalent circuit for ground leakage current. The same analysis can be extended to applications regarding electric drives, since the HF model of electric machines is characterized by stray capacitance between windings and the stator slots/motor frame. Simulation results proved the correctness of the proposed simplified common-mode circuit and highlighted the need of an additional common-mode inductor filter in case of resonance frequencies of the common-m... March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: all-solid-state battery, Li-S battery, LiBH4, reduced graphene oxide, solid electrolyte.
All-solid-state Li-S batteries (use of solid electrolyte LiBH4) were prepared using cathodes of a homogeneous mixture of graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) with sulfur (S) and solid electrolyte lithium borohydride (LiBH4), and their electrochemical performance was reported. The use of LiBH4 and its compatibility with Li metal permits the utilization of Li anode that improves the vitality of composite electrodes. The GO-S and rGO-S nanocomposites with different proportions have been synthesized. Their structural and morphological characterizations were performed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the results are presented. The electrochemical performance was tested by galvanostatic charge-discharge measurements at a 0.1 C-rate. The results presented here demonstrate the successful implementation of GO-S composites in an all-solid-state battery.

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electrolyte additive, irreversible capacity loss, lithium-ion battery, molecular tunning, SEI stability, solid–electrolyte interphase.
The solid−electrolyte interphase (SEI), the passivation layer formed on anode particles during the initial cycles, affects the performance of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) in terms of capacity, power output, and cycle life. SEI features are dependent on the electrolyte content, as this complex layer originates from electrolyte decomposition products. Despite a variety of studies devoted to understanding SEI formation, the complexity of this process has caused uncertainty in its chemistry. In order to clarify the role of the substituted functional groups of the SEI-forming compounds in their efficiency and the features of the resulting interphase, the performance of six different carbonyl-based molecules has been investigated by computational modeling and electrochemical experiments with a comparative approach. The performance of the electrolytes and stability of the generated SEI are evaluated in both half-cell and full-cell configurations. Added to the room-temperature studies, the cyc... [more]

Demonstration of a Novel Alternating Current Hybrid Concept for a Fuel Cell−Battery Hybrid Electric Aircraft
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery, electric aircraft, fuel cell, hybrid system, power control.
Hybrid electric aircraft offer the potential to decrease emissions from air travel. A new hybrid concept is proposed for a fuel cell-battery hybrid aircraft. In contrast to existing hybrids, the proposed concept puts a battery directly on the AC phases of the motor, which together with a suitable switching circuit superimposes the DC voltage from the battery on the AC voltage of the motor phase providing a voltage boost depending on the battery voltage, which can be used during a high-power demand flight phase. The system is also capable of recharging the battery during flight. The necessary switching architecture was developed and modeled in MATLAB/Simulink to verify the concept and an experimental setup was built for demonstrating the functionality. Simulation and experimental results showed a very good agreement which is very promising for the proposed new hybrid topology.

A Design Procedure for Anchors of Floating Ocean Current Turbines on Weak Rock
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: dead weight anchor, design procedure, foundation design, limestone seabed, ocean current turbine, pile anchor.
In recent years, ocean current turbines have proven to be a reliable device for renewable energy generation. A crucial element of these turbines are the foundations, since they limit the displacement of the turbine, which is key in achieving efficiency in energy conversion, and can account for up to 26% of the total cost of the project. Most design procedures for foundations focus on sandy and clayey soils, but rock soils often predominate in tropical locations where marine currents are suitable for the installation of this type of turbine. This paper presents a design procedure for steel pile anchors (PAs) and concrete dead weight anchors (DWAs) on weak rock soils, using the assumptions of current technical documents and design codes commonly used in the industry for marine structures. Using specific designs for PA and DWA anchors, the procedure was theoretically assessed for a site off Cozumel Island, Mexico. The results show that the dimensions needed for DWAs are substantially larg... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energy consumption, Energy Efficiency, OFDI, the belt and road.
Under the Belt and Road concepts of mutual benefit and win−win cooperation, China is strengthening its energy cooperation with other countries. We used several econometric models and social network analysis models to study the impacts of China’s outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) on the host and home countries. We first examined China’s OFDI location preference and analysed the effects of OFDI on energy consumption in host countries. Meanwhile, we observed the impact of the reverse spillover effect of OFDI on China’s energy efficiency. The results indicate that (1) the impact of China’s OFDI on energy consumption in host countries has been lower than that on neighbouring countries, and increased significantly after 2014. (2) The space network of energy consumption in Belt and Road countries has a strict hierarchical structure. However, it was disbanded by the Belt and Road policy in 2014. Improving Forecast Reliability for Geographically Distributed Photovoltaic Generations
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: day ahead forecasting, ensemble forecast, multiple PV forecasting, photovoltaic generation forecast, prediction interval, probabilistic forecast.
Photovoltaic (PV) generation is potentially uncertain. Probabilistic PV generation forecasting methods have been proposed with prediction intervals (PIs) to evaluate the uncertainty quantitively. However, few studies have applied PIs to geographically distributed PVs in a specific area. In this study, a two-step probabilistic forecast scheme is proposed for geographically distributed PV generation forecasting. Each step of the proposed scheme adopts ensemble forecasting based on three different machine-learning methods. When individual PV generation is forecasted, the proposed scheme utilizes surrounding PVs’ past data to train the ensemble forecasting model. In this case study, the proposed scheme was compared with conventional non-multistep forecasting. The proposed scheme improved the reliability of the PIs and deterministic PV forecasting results through 30 days of continuous operation with real data in Japan.

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: hydraulic-mechanical-electric parameters, hydroelectric generating system, nonlinear dynamics, sudden load increasing process, vibration characteristics.
In a sudden load increasing process (SLIP), the hydroelectric generating system (HGS) experiences a severe vibration response due to the sudden change of the hydraulic-mechanical-electric parameters (HMEPs). The instability of HGS limits the ability of sudden load increase, and its flexibility and reliability are reduced. Thus, in this study, a new transient nonlinear coupling model of HGS is proposed, which couples the hydro-turbine governing system (HTGS) and the hydro-turbine generator shafting system (HGSS) with the hydraulic-mechanical-electric coupling force, rotating speed, flow rate, hydro-turbine torque, electromagnetic torque, and guide vane opening. By using numerical simulation, the influences of different HMEPs on the vibration characteristics of HGS in SLIP are analyzed.
