Gang Wang, Yiwei Xie, Huizhen Chang, Liqiang Du, Qi Wang, Tao He, Shuaiyi Zhang
August 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: coalbed methane, gas production, geological impact factors, Gujiao Block, water production
The coalbed methane resources of the Gujiao Block are abundant, and the exploration degree is high. The gas production and water production of different CBM (coalbed methane) wells vary greatly. The average gas production of CBM wells in the study area is mostly less than 1000 m3/d, while the average water production is mostly less than 5 m3/d. The gas production of CBM wells near the core of the Malan syncline is relatively high. A series of large faults exist in the central and eastern parts of the study area, and CBM wells nearby produce more water but less gas. The salinity of water discharged from CBM wells ranges from 810.34 to 3115.48 mg/L, which is consistent with the trend of a gradual increase from north to south. The gas content distribution follows this same gradually increasing north to south trend. Coal thickness and buried depth have little effect on gas production, but have some effects on water production. The endogenous fracture system in the coal reservoir is extreme... [more]

Qiquan Ran, Xin Zhou, Jiaxin Dong, Mengya Xu, Dianxing Ren, Ruibo Li
August 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cohesive, fracture propagation, hydraulic fracturing, inter-well interference, numerical simulation
Multi-horizontal well hydraulic fracturing is a widely employed and highly effective method for stimulating tight and shale reservoirs. However, most existing studies primarily focus on investigating the impact of intra-well interference on fracture propagation while neglecting the influence of inter-well interference. Here, a multi-well hydraulic-fracture-propagation model is established to examine the effects of inter-well interference on fracture propagation within a multi-well system. In this study, based on the bilinear T-S criterion, the stiffness degradation is used to describe the damage and evolution process of fracture, the coupling process of fluid flow and solid damage and deformation is realized, and the dynamic distribution of inter-fracture flow is realized by using Kirchhoff function on the basis of the cohesive zone method (CZM) finite element model. Finally, the fracture-propagation model of multiple horizontal wells is established. Based on this model, the mechanism... [more]

August 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: chance-constrained programming, flexibility constraints, integrated energy system, multi-time scale, uncertainties
The connection between various energy types in the integrated power and natural gas system has grown stronger in recent years, as has the penetration rate of clean energy. Wind power generation volatility offers a considerable barrier to power system operation. This research provides a multi-time scale economic dispatch model with flexibility limitations to address this issue. Through chance-constrained programming, the equipment flexibility is described by probability functions and predetermined confidence levels in this model, and the generating cost and wind power consumption are improved through day-ahead and intra-day optimal scheduling. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed model is verified by two case studies of integrated energy systems, where the results show that about 68.0−72.1% wind power curtailment can be effectively reduced while satisfying all load and system safety requirements.

José C. Jiménez-García, Alexis Ruiz, Alejandro Pacheco-Reyes, Wilfrido Rivera
August 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: microturbines, organic Rankine cycles, Polygeneration, power production, waste heat recovery
It has been demonstrated that energy systems driven by conventional energy sources like fossil fuels are one of the main causes of climate change. Organic Rankine cycles can help to reduce that impact, as they can be operated by using the industrial waste heat of renewable energies. The present study presents a comprehensive bibliographic review of organic Rankine cycles. The study not only actualizes previous reviews that mainly focused on basic cycles operating on subcritical or supercritical conditions, but also includes the analysis of novel cycles such as two-stage and hybrid cycles and the used fluids. Recuperative and regenerative cycles are more efficient than reheated and basic single-stage cycles. The use of two-stage cycles makes it possible to achieve higher thermal efficiencies and net power outputs of up to 20% and 44%, respectively, compared with those obtained with single-stage cycles. Theoretical studies show that hybrid systems, including Brayton and organic Rankine c... [more]
Finite Element Analysis and Prediction of Rock Mass Permeability Based on a Two-Dimensional Plane Discrete Fracture Model
Bochao Zhang, Lixin Wang, Jianming Liu
August 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fracture parameters, groundwater, permeability, seepage, underground engineering
The safety of underground engineering projects is significantly influenced by groundwater. One of the key complexities is identifying the primary seepage paths within underground rock formations, understanding the patterns of seepage, and determining the effects of fracture parameters on the fluid movement inside the rock mass. To address these issues, a probabilistic model is constructed for random fractures using the finite element method, reflecting the random nature of fracture distributions in the real world. This model allows for an in-depth examination of the distribution of pore water pressure and Darcy velocity field, revealing the permeability trends in fractured rock masses. A variety of fracture models were devised to understand the relationship between factors such as fracture density, length, length power law, angle, dispersion coefficient, aperture, and power law, and how they affect the overall permeability of rock masses. The study suggests that, in the context of disc... [more]

August 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fracture propagation, Mahu Sag, pressure curve, tight conglomerate, true tri-axial hydraulic fracturing
Conglomerate reservoirs are usually formed in sag slope belts, which have the characteristics of near-source rapid deposition, rapid sedimentary facies change, and distinct reservoir heterogeneity. Therefore, it is difficult to carry out treatments of stimulation because of insufficient understanding of the propagation mechanism of the unique “gravel-bypassing” and “gravel-penetrating” characteristics of fracture morphologies in Mahu conglomerate reservoirs. In order to study the law of hydraulic fracture propagation in conglomerate reservoirs, based on Brazilian splitting test results for conglomerates with different gravel particle sizes and different cementation degrees, true tri-axial fracturing experiments conducted in the laboratory were performed to conduct experimental research on natural conglomerate outcrops and analyze the effects of gravel size, fracturing fluid viscosity, and pumping rate on hydraulic fracture propagation morphology. The results show that: (1) the gravel c... [more]

August 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CO2–oil system, density, laboratory test, solution, viscosity, volume factor
Change regulation of the physical properties of fluid is key to accurately predicting multiphase fluid flow in the production wellbore of CO2 flooding reservoirs. Given the characteristics of significant changes in pressure, temperature, and CO2 content in the whole wellbore of production wells in CO2 flooding reservoirs, this paper systematically studied the change rules of volume factor, viscosity, density, and solubility of well fluid for pressure 5~30 MPa, temperature 20~120 °C, and CO2 content 10~90% through single degassing PVT experiments. According to the experimental results, the volume factor of crude oil increases first and then decreases with the pressure increase. At the bubble point pressure (20 MPa), the volume factor of crude oil can reach 1.89 at high temperatures. The volume factor can be increased from 1.28 to 1.44 at 8 MPa when the temperature increases from 20 °C to 120 °C. Under the bubble point pressure, the increase in pressure increases the solubility of CO2, a... [more]

August 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bifunctional catalysts, biodiesel, transesterification, waste cooking oil
Presently, the use of fossil fuels is not ecologically sustainable, which results in the need for new alternative energies such as biodiesel. This work presents a review of the classification of the lipidic feedstocks and the catalysts for biodiesel production. It also presents the pros and cons of the different processes and feedstocks through which biodiesel is obtained. In this context, cooking oil (WCO) has emerged as an alternative with a high potential for making the process sustainable. A detected limitation to achieving this is the high content of free fatty acids (FFA) and existing problems related to homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts. To overcome this, the use of bifunctional catalysts is being evaluated by the scientific community. Thus, this work also explores the advances in the study of bifunctional catalysts, which are capable of simultaneously carrying out the esterification of free fatty acids (FFA) and the triglycerides present in the WCO. For the sake of an imp... [more]

Keywords: horizontal well position, indirect fracturing, natural fracture, pore pressure cohesive element, tectonic stress
Indirect fracturing from roof rock to coal using a horizontal well is a new and promising technology for coalbed methane surface exploitation in soft and low-permeability coal seams. In order to study the propagation law of hydraulic fractures across the coal−rock interface, a pore pressure cohesive element is used to establish a numerical model for indirect fracturing. Combined with practical engineering in a 3# coal seam in the Xinjing mine in China, the propagation behavior of hydraulic fractures across the coal−rock interface was researched, and the range of the horizontal well position for indirect fracturing was determined. The results show that: (1) the pore pressure cohesive element can be used to accurately simulate the interaction between hydraulic fractures and natural fractures, and the propagation of hydraulic fractures across the coal−rock interface. (2) As the vertical distance between the horizontal well and coal−rock interface decreases, the breakdown pressure of perfo... [more]

August 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: in situ pyrolysis, numerical simulation, oil shale, sensitivity analysis
The Maoming basin in south China is rich in oil shale resources, whereas the Youganwo formation is a potential area for large-scale in situ exploration because of its relatively large thickness, high oil content, and good continuity. Based on previous geologic studies on the Maoming basin and the laboratory experimental data, in situ pyrolysis models for shale oil are established using the CMG-STARS software to simulate the in situ heating and reactions. To analyze the major influencing factors, the CMOST module is employed to conduct the sensitivity analysis with accumulated oil and gas production as the target functions. The initial kerogen concentration, formation permeability, activation energy of pyrolysis reaction, frequency factor, heating rate, heating power, heat loss, heat conductivity, heat capacity, and bottom-hole pressure are chosen to be the controlling parameters. A total of 128 cases are calculated for each target function with the fractional factorial sampling method.... [more]

Keywords: biodiesel, minimization of leaching water, minimization of sodium hydroxide, operating conditions, transesterification homogeneous basic route
Currently, energy generation based on fossil fuels is producing negative environmental impacts; two of the main symptoms of these impacts are water pollution and climate change. Consequently, the search for new technologies to satisfy the energy demand must have the goal to minimise possible impacts to the environment. There are alternatives with biofuels and, among them, biodiesel. The cheapest reaction pathway for biodiesel production is the transesterification of triglycerides by methanol in the presence of sodium hydroxide; however, this option can contaminate large volumes of water used in the final leach of the biodiesel product. Therefore, a feasible way of producing this biofuel while simultaneously minimising leaching water will be environmentally friendly and will improve economical savings. The present study developed an experimental design in order to minimise the addition of NaOH during biodiesel production by the basic homogeneous pathway. The best operating conditions we... [more]

Keywords: fracture dip angle, fracture permeability, hydraulic fracturing, near wellbore distortion, shale gas
Horizontal wells’ multi-section and multi-cluster hydraulic fracturing plays an important role in the efficient development of shale gas. However, the influence of the perforating hole and natural fracture dip angle on the process of hydraulic fracture initiation and propagation has been ignored in the current researches. This paper presents the results related to a tri-axial large-scale hydraulic fracturing experiment under different natural fracture parameters. We discuss the experimental results relating to the near-wellbore tortuosity propagation of hydraulic fractures. Experimental results showed that the triaxial principal stress of the experimental sample was deflected by the natural fracture, which caused significant near-wellbore tortuosity propagation of the hydraulic fractures. The fractures in most rock samples were not perpendicular to the minimum horizontal principal stress after the experiment. As well, the deflection degree of triaxial principal stress direction and the... [more]

To reduce emissions and save energy, alternative fuel and dual-fuel mode have been widely applied in the field of diesel engines. The pilot injection has potential to reduce engine vibration noise and pollutant emissions. The effects of a diesel fuel pilot injection strategy on the performance of an ethanol/F-T diesel dual-fuel engine were experimentally investigated on a four-cylinder four-stroke common rail diesel engine modified with an ethanol injection system. The results indicate that the variation in the combustion characteristic parameters with pilot injection timing is nonlinear and the difference is small, while soot, NO, and CO tend to decrease, with an increase in pilot injection timing. With the increase in pilot injection amount, pmax, combustion duration, CO and soot increased; pmax phase and CA50 were closer to TDC; HRRmax and the ignition delay period decreased. The BSFC tends to increase with the increase in pilot injection timing and the increase in pilot injection a... [more]

Keywords: CO2 utilization, power-to-gas, power-to-liquid, production cost, system integration
A large number of CO2 emissions caused a serious greenhouse effect, aggravating global warming and climate change. Therefore, CO2 utilization has been a research hotspot, especially after the Paris Agreement, and among the various CO2 utilization technologies, the power-to-gas (PTG) and power-to-liquid (PTL) processes have recently attracted significant attention because they can transform CO2 into fuels and/or chemicals. Considering the lack of detailed information in the literature with regard to process design and economic analysis, we have critically and comprehensively summarized the recent research progresses concerning the PTG and PTL processes. Herein, we mainly focus on the power-to-methane in the case of PTG and the power-to-syncrude, power-to-methanol, and power-to-ethers in the case of PTL. From the technical point of view, the bottleneck problem of PTG and PTL processes is the low system efficiency, which can be improved by heat integration and/or process integration. Mean... [more]

China has focused on the exploration and development of shale gas resources to reduce its reliance on coal and shift to cleaner energy sources. While significant progress has been made in the Sichuan Basin, unlocking the shale gas potential in other regions of South China has proven challenging due to the complex geology and mountainous terrain. In 2021, Well QSD-1 was deployed in southwestern Guizhou and achieved a daily shale gas flow of 11,011 m3 in the Dawuba Formation, marking the first time an industrial gas flow had been obtained from shale gas drilling in the marine strata of the Upper Paleozoic in China. This breakthrough has deepened the understanding of the southern China Carboniferous marine strata and highlighted key aspects of the formation: (1) Sedimentation occurred in alternating platforms and basins, with most organic-rich shale developed in sloping and basin areas; (2) the formation exhibits favorable static indicators, with a relatively thick section (over 200 m), a... Twelve crude oil blends prepared from seven individual crude oils and an imported atmospheric residue were characterized through a true boiling point (TBP) distillation analysis and their density. When comparing the measured TBP fraction yields with those estimated through the application of the additive blending rule, it was found that, for four crude oil blends, the additive blending rule was valid, while for the remaining eight crude oil blends, deviations of the measured TBP yields from the estimated ones were bigger than the TBP analysis’s repeatability limits. By the use of intercriteria analysis evaluation of the data for the deviation of the TBP yields from the additive blending rule and the molar excess volume of the crude oil blends, statistically meaningful relations between the delta TBP yields of light and heavy naphtha, as well as vacuum residue with the molar excess volume, were found. The higher the magnitude of the crude oil blend’s molar excess volume, the bigger the... [more]

July 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: low grade heat, twin-screw expander, two-phase expansion, waste heat recovery
Volumetric expanders are proven to be more suitable for small-scale waste heat recovery applications because of their simplicity, reliability, lower rotational speed and lower cost. Unlike turbines, volumetric expanders can work in the two-phase fluid state, which broadens their application fields. To investigate the two-phase performance of volumetric expanders, a specific twin-screw expander was chosen and modeled. The leakage loss and the suction pressure loss were primary concerns in this research. The two-phase expansion process in the expander is presented in detail using the developed mathematical model with an indicator diagram. The influence of several factors, including inlet vapor quality, rotational speed and intake pressure, are investigated. The influence mechanism of the vapor phase and the liquid phase on expander performance is clarified. In brief, this paper presents an illustrative understanding of the two-phase expansion process in twin-screw expanders.

Keywords: friction factor, heat transfer performance, micro-inserts, microchannel, pressure drop, thermal performance factor
A microchannel heat exchanger effectively evacuates heat from a confined space. This paper attempts to gain insight into the combinatorial repercussions of simultaneously coupling two factors that affect a microchannel’s performance, of which channel size and micro-insert complexity are the two main contributors. With water as the working fluid, an ANSYS-based numerical analysis was carried out for two distinct channel sizes, 1 and 2 mm, both with and without micro-inserts. The Reynolds numbers varied between 125 and 4992 and between 250 and 9985 for the 1 and 2 mm channels, respectively. For the 2 mm diameter channel, adding micro-inserts raised the overall pressure drop with increased Reynolds number. The inclusion of micro-inserts increased the pressure drop in the 1 mm channel at first, and thereafter the pressure drop decreased. Incorporating micro-inserts into the channel resulted in enhanced heat transfer. The trade-off between enhanced heat transfer performance and a larger pre... [more]
