Discrete Wavelet Transform for the Real-Time Smoothing of Wind Turbine Power Using Li-Ion Batteries
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: hybrid energy storage systems, Li-Ion battery, power smoothing, wavelet transform, wind turbine
Energy Storage Systems (EES) are key to further increase the penetration in energy grids of intermittent renewable energy sources, such as wind, by smoothing out power fluctuations. In order this to be economically feasible; however, the ESS need to be sized correctly and managed efficiently. In the study, the use of discrete wavelet transform (Daubechies Db4) to decompose the power output of utility-scale wind turbines into high and low-frequency components, with the objective of smoothing wind turbine power output, is discussed and applied to four-year Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) real data from multi-MW, on-shore wind turbines provided by the industrial partner. Two main research requests were tackled: first, the effectiveness of the discrete wavelet transform for the correct sizing and management of the battery (Li-Ion type) storage was assessed in comparison to more traditional approaches such as a simple moving average and a direct use of the battery in respon... Impact of Lorentz Force in Thermally Developed Pulsatile Micropolar Fluid Flow in a Constricted Channel
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: constricted channel, heat transfer, Lorentz force, micropolar fluid, pulsatile flow, thermal radiation
This work aimed to analyze the heat transfer of micropolar fluid flow in a constricted channel influenced by thermal radiation and the Lorentz force. A finite difference-based flow solver, on a Cartesian grid, is used for the numerical solution after transforming the governing equations into the vorticity-stream function form. The impact of various emerging parameters on the wall shear stress, axial velocity, micro-rotation velocity and temperature profiles is discussed in this paper. The temperature profile is observed to have an inciting trend towards the thermal radiation, whereas it has a declining trend towards the Hartman and Prandtl numbers. The axial velocity profile has an inciting trend towards the Hartman number, whereas it has a declining trend towards the micropolar parameter and Reynolds number. The micro-rotation velocity escalates with the micropolar parameter and Hartman number, whereas it de-escalates with the Reynolds number. The Nusselt number is observed to have a... [more]

Energy and Exergy Analyses of Adsorption Chiller at Various Recooling-Water and Dead-State Temperatures
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Adsorption, adsorption cooling, dead state, Exergy, reheat cycle, mass recovery
We conducted energy and exergy analyses of an adsorption chiller to investigate the effect of recooling-water temperatures on the cooling capacity and Coefficient of Performance (COP) with variable cycle modes. We investigated both the effect of the recooling-water temperature and the dead state temperature on the exergy destruction in the chiller components. Our results show that there is an optimum reheat cycle mode for each recooling-water temperature range. For the basic single stage cycle, the exergy destruction is mainly accrued in the desorber (49%), followed by the adsorber (27%), evaporator (13%), condenser (9%), and expansion valve (2%). The exergy destruction for the preheating process is approximately 35% of the total exergy destruction in the desorber. By contrast, the precooling process is almost 58% of the total exergy destruction in the adsorber. The exergy destruction decreases when increasing the recooling-water and the dead state temperatures, while the exergy effici... [more]

Power-Generation Optimization Based on Piezoelectric Ceramic Deformation for Energy Harvesting Application with Renewable Energy
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energy harvesting, piezoelectric ceramic, power generation, PZT, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
Along with the increase in renewable energy, research on energy harvesting combined with piezoelectric energy is being conducted. However, it is difficult to predict the power generation of combined harvesting because there is no data on the power generation by a single piezoelectric material. Before predicting the corresponding power generation and efficiency, it is necessary to quantify the power generation by a single piezoelectric material alone. In this study, the generated power is measured based on three parameters (size of the piezoelectric ceramic, depth of compression, and speed of compression) that contribute to the deformation of a single PZT (Lead zirconate titanate)-based piezoelectric element. The generated power was analyzed by comparing with the corresponding parameters. The analysis results are as follows: (i) considering the difference between the size of the piezoelectric ceramic and the generated power, 20 mm was the most efficient piezoelectric ceramic size, (ii)... CO2 Intensities and Primary Energy Factors in the Future European Electricity System
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: CO2 intensity, electric vehicle, electricity, Europe, heat pump, primary energy factor
The European Union strives for sharp reductions in both CO2 emissions as well as primary energy use. Electricity consuming technologies are becoming increasingly important in this context, due to the ongoing electrification of transport and heating services. To correctly evaluate these technologies, conversion factors are needed—namely CO2 intensities and primary energy factors (PEFs). However, this evaluation is hindered by the unavailability of a high-quality database of conversion factor values. Ideally, such a database has a broad geographical scope, a high temporal resolution and considers cross-country exchanges of electricity as well as future evolutions in the electricity mix. In this paper, a state-of-the-art unit commitment economic dispatch model of the European electricity system is developed and a flow-tracing technique is innovatively applied to future scenarios (2025−2040)—to generate such a database and make it publicly available. Important dynamics are revealed, includ... [more]

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biomass combustion, Carbon Capture, co-firing, fluidized bed combustion, oxy-fuel combustion, SRF combustion
The fluidized bed combustion (FBC) of biomass and solid recovered fuel (SRF) is globally emerging as a viable solution to achieve net-negative carbon emissions in the heat and power sector. Contrary to conventional fossil fuels, alternative fuels are highly heterogeneous, and usually contain increased amounts of alkaline metals and chlorine. Hence, experimental studies are mandatory in order to thoroughly characterize the combustion behavior and pollutant formation of non-conventional fuels in novel applications. This work gives an overview of experimental investigations on the oxy-fuel combustion of hard coal, wheat straw, and SRF with a limestone bed in a semi-industrial circulating fluidized bed (CFB) pilot plant. The CFB combustor was able to be operated under different fuel blending ratios and inlet O2 concentrations, showing a stable hydrodynamic behavior over many hours of continuous operation. The boundary conditions introduced in this study are expected to prevail in carbon ca... [more]

Diagnostics of PID Early Stage in PV Systems
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: diagnostics of photovoltaic module defects, impedance characteristics, potential-induced degradation
Potential induced degradation (PID) is a serious threat for the photovoltaic (PV) industry. The risk of PID may increase with increasing operating voltage of PV systems. Although PID tests are currently standard tests, the expansion of floating PV power plants and installation in humid climates show that PID-free modules are still sensitive to this type of degradation. Therefore, a method that can detect PID in the initial phase before standard tests reveal it, is necessary to increase the reliability of PV systems and maintain their lifetime. One possible tool for revealing early-stage PID manifestations is impedance spectroscopy and I-V dark curves measurements. Both IS and dark current measurement methods are sensitive to cell shunt resistance (RSH), which is strongly influenced by PID before significant power loss and can act as an early stage PID detection mechanism. The paper describes the differences of the common P-type PV module parameters both during the degradation process a... [more]

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: air–fuel mixing, atomisation, efficiency, emissions, internal combustion engine, recuperated split cycle engine, thermal propulsion system
In this work air fuel mixing and combustion dynamics in the recuperated split cycle engine (RSCE) are investigated through new theoretical analysis and complementary optical experiments of the flow field. First, a brief introduction to the basic working principles of the RSCE cycle will be presented, followed by recent test bed results relevant to pressure traces and soot emissions. These results prompted fundamental questioning of the air-fuel mixing and combustion dynamics taking place. Hypotheses of the mixing process are then presented, with differences to that of a conventional Diesel engine highlighted. Moreover, the links of the reduced emissions, air transfer processes and enhanced atomisation are explored. Initial experimental results and Schlieren images of the air flow through the poppet valves in a flow rig are reported. The Schlieren images display shockwave and Mach disk phenomena. Demonstrating supersonic air flow in the chamber is consistent with complementary CFD work.... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cam groove profile, cavitation, reciprocating piston pump distributing flow, rotating-sleeve distributing flow system, structurally improved
Reciprocating piston pumps are widely used in various fields, such as automobiles, ships, aviation, and engineering machinery. Conventional reciprocating piston pump distributing flow (RPPDF) systems have the disadvantages of a loose structure and low volumetric efficiency, as well as affected positively by the operating frequency. In this paper, a novel rotating-sleeve distributing flow (RSDF) system is presented for bridging these drawbacks, as well as structurally improved to overcome the inoperable and challenging problems in oil intake and discharge found in the experiment. Moreover, the Singhal cavitation model specifically for the RSDF system and four-cam groove profiles (CGPs) is established. To find the most suitable CGP to reduce the RSDF’s cavitation, the cavitation of the RSDF system was investigated, combining with simulations by taking into account the gap among the rotating sleeve, the pump chamber, and experiments on four presented CGPs. Keywords: biodiesel production, chicken feet oil, response surface method, the membrane system, ultrasound
In this study, the experiments were carried out under different operating conditions to evaluate the effect of ultrasound waves on biodiesel production from chicken feet oil. A two-step esterification−transesterification mechanism was employed to improve the biodiesel quality. The continuous (methanol-to-oil molar ratio and KOH catalyst amount) and discrete (frequencies, 25 and 45 kHz) variables were investigated using the experimental design method. The five-level three-factor response surface method (RSM) was assisted to optimize the biodiesel synthesis variables. Applying RSM based on the central composite design (CCD), a polynomial equation was fitted to the experimental data with the aid of Design-Expert software. The model accuracy was checked by analysis of variance (ANOVA). The results showed the highest yield of 89.74% could be achieved by using an M/O molar ratio of 12, a KOH concentration of 1 wt%, and an ultrasound frequency of 45 kHz. Aerodynamic and Structural Strategies for the Rotor Design of a Wind Turbine Scaled Model
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: blade design, natural laboratory, wind tunnel, wind turbine model
Experimental tests performed in a wind tunnel or in a natural laboratory represent a fundamental research tool to develop floating wind technologies. In order to obtain reliable results, the wind turbine scale model rotor must be designed so to obtain a fluid-structure interaction comparable to the one experienced by a real machine. This implies an aerodynamic design of the 3D blade geometry but, also, a structural project to match the main aeroelastic issues. For natural laboratory models, due to not controlled test conditions, the wind turbine rotor model must be checked also for extreme winds. The present paper will focus on all the strategies adopted to scale a wind turbine blade presenting two studied cases: the first is a 1:75 scale model for wind tunnel applications and the second a 1:15 model for natural laboratory tests.

An Overview on Electric-Stress Degradation Empirical Models for Electrochemical Devices in Smart Grids
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery bank, degradation model, fuel cell, photovoltaic panel, PV panel, smart grid, supercapacitor, ultracapacitor
The conversion from existing electrical networks into an all-renewable and environmentally friendly electrification scenario is insufficient to produce and distribute energy efficiently. Electrochemical devices’ premature degradation as a whole caused by electrical stressors in smart grids is incipient from an energy management strategies (EMS) perspective. Namely, few electrical-stress degradation models for photovoltaic panels, batteries, fuel cells, and super/ultra-capacitors (SCs), and particular stressors can be found in the literature. In this article, the basic operating principles for such devices, existing degradation models, and future research hints, including their incorporation in novel EMS, are condensed. The necessity of extending these studies to other stressors and devices is also emphasized. There are many other degradation models by non-electrical stressors, such as climatic conditions and mechanical wear. Although novel EMS should manage both electrical and non-elec... [more]

Adaptive Tolerant State Estimation under Model Uncertainty in Power Systems
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: adaptive, power systems, singular value decomposition, state estimator, under-determined
In this paper an adaptive tolerant estimator using singular value decomposition is proposed for a distribution network under model uncertainty in power systems. The adaptive tolerant estimator was designed with adjusted parameters and adjusted weights to overcome the limitations of model uncertainty. The estimator that reduces the measurement errors is adaptive to fast parameter changes in complicated environments. The singular value decomposition method was combined into the state estimator, which extended the over-determined cases to under-determined cases under model uncertainty. The performance of the tolerant estimator was compared with the conventional adaptive estimator, and the tolerant estimator showed accurate estimations against model uncertainty in complicated measurement environments.

Impacts of Mooring-Lines Hysteresis on Dynamic Response of Spar Floating Wind Turbine
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: dynamic, hysteresis, mooring-lines, non-linear, restoring performance
Floating wind turbines often experience larger-amplitude motions caused by wind and ocean wave loads, while mooring-lines, such as catenary and taut mooring-lines, make the structure configurations along with an analysis of the global response more complicated compared to a fixed support foundation. Moreover, the restoring performance of dynamic mooring-lines exhibits a significant hysteresis behavior, and this hysteresis behavior may have profound impacts on the structural response of floating wind turbines under environmental loads. In this study, using the coupled finite element method, a dynamic simulation model is developed to study the motion responses of a spar floating wind turbine under consideration of mooring-lines hysteresis. In order to consider large-amplitude motion and nonlinear behaviors of catenary mooring-lines, a FEM (finite element method) model is developed based on a combination of 3D nonlinear beam elements and the super-element approach, and the interaction bet... Experimental Investigation of Combustion Characteristics on Opposed Piston Two-Stroke Gasoline Direct Injection Engine
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: combustion characteristics, ignition timing, injection timing, opposed piston two stroke gasoline engine, phase difference, scavenging pressure
The combustion characteristics of an opposed-piston two-stroke gasoline engine are investigated with experiment. The energy conversion and exergy destruction are analyzed and the organization method of the combustion process is summarized. The effects of phase difference, scavenging pressure, injection timing, ignition timing, and dual spark plug ignition scheme on the combustion process and engine performance are discussed, respectively. The heat release rate of the opposed-piston two-stroke gasoline engine is consistent with the conventional gasoline engine. With the increase of opposed-piston motion phase difference, the scavenging efficiency decreases and overmuch residual exhaust gas is not beneficial to the combustion process. Meanwhile, the faster relative velocity of the opposed-piston near the inner dead center enhances the cylinder working volume change rate, which leads to the rapid decline of in-cylinder pressure and temperature. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: exhaust pressure, gasoline engine, misfire, pre-ignition, super-knock
The super-knock poses new challenges for further increasing the power density of spark ignition (SI) engines. The critical factors and mechanism connecting regarding the occurrence of super-knock are still unclear. Misfire is a common phenomenon in SI engines that the mixture in cylinder is not ignited normally, which is often caused by spark plug failure. Keywords: architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) projects, barriers, building energy model (BEM), building information modeling (BIM), Ishikawa diagram
BIM (building information modeling) is a kind of technology that has great potential to enhance the level of automation in architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) projects. The created virtual model of the facility allows coordinating all industries during the entire life cycle of the building. The possibility to save the data related to the given facility in one place, namely in the BIM model, enables control and management of the AEC projects at every stage. During the design and implementation phase, BIM models facilitate the optimization of time, costs, and quality, and in the operational phase, they support effective management of the facility. The use of BIM for building energy modeling (BEM) is the next step of evolution in architecture and engineering design practice.
