Screening and Testing of Anti-Slagging Agents for Tobacco-Stalk-Based Biomass Pellet Fuel for Tobacco Curing

Using tobacco stalks as a biomass fuel for flue-cured tobacco production creates a closed, green production cycle. Tobacco stalks are rich in cellulose and can be crushed to produce biomass pellet fuel (BPF). However, single flue-cured tobacco stalk (FCTs) BPF can easily slag during flue-cured tobacco heating (FTH), which affects the operation of biomass burners. In this study, five anti-slagging agents (ASAs), one organic (sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, CMC) and four inorganic (kaolin, KLN; diatomite earth, DTE; calcium carbonate, CCO; and calcium dihydrogen phosphate, CHO)], were compared. An ash fusibility test was conducted in two steps to optimize the proportion and treatments that were then screened using FTH. In order to assess the sunflower oil (SFO) oxidative stability that was added by the essential oils extracted from Lonicera japonica flower buds (LJEO) during deep-frying at 180 °C for 30 h, we clarified the compound/compounds of LJEO that improved the oxidative stability of SFO. The results displayed that the addition of LJEO (0.06 g/kg) could significantly restrict the elevation or the reduction in the levels of total polar compounds (TPC), thiobarbituric acid (TBA), conjugated dienes and conjugated trienes, and the values for polymer, viscosity and the color of SFO during the whole period. In the present study, carotenoids were recovered from processing sweet corn by-products (SCB). The total carotenoid content determined in the SCB extract was 1.19 mg/100 g DW, and the principal carotenoids identified by the HPLC technique were zeaxanthin, β-cryptoxanthin and lutein. Freeze- and spray-drying techniques were applied for the encapsulation of SCB extract; for this purpose, four different wall materials were used: two proteins (soy and pea) and two carbohydrates (maltodextrin and inulin). The physicochemical characteristics of eight encapsulates were determined to assess their stability. Histopathological Evaluation of Annona muricata in TAA-Induced Liver Injury in Rats

This research in vivo assessed the impact of the ethanolic extract of Annona muricata (A. muricata) on the histopathology, immunohistochemistry, and biochemistry of thioacetamide (TAA)-induced liver cirrhosis in Sprague Dawley rats. The rats, gavaged precisely with two doses of A. muricata (250 mg/kg and 500 mg/kg) with TAA, presented a substantial reduction in the liver index and hepatocyte propagation, with much lower cell injury. Influence of Pretreatments and Freeze-Drying Conditions of Strawberries on Drying Kinetics and Physicochemical Properties

The aim of this study is to analyze the effects of pretreatments and drying temperature on the freeze-drying (FD) kinetics, ascorbic acid content, color changes, and antioxidant activity (AA) of strawberries. Experiments were performed at 20 °C, 40 °C, and 60 °C, with a constant pressure of 63 Pa in the FD chamber. The strawberry samples were cut into slices (CS) and pulped (PS) before drying. The drying kinetics was best described using the Midilli or logistic model depending on the strawberry grinding method used and the FD temperature. The FD of strawberries significantly increased the lightness, redness, and yellowness of the dried fruit. The FD temperature and pretreatment methods had little influence on the total phenolic content (TPC) and AA. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of sous vide technology on the chemical properties of fruit jams produced with medlar fruit (Mespilus germanica L.). The fruit jams were produced using sous vide technology at different temperatures: 60 °C, 70 °C, and 80 °C. The fruit jams were also produced at 100 °C using the traditional cooking method. Experimentally produced samples were evaluated by the following methods: total polyphenols content, ferric reducing antioxidant power assay (FRAP), 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), and organic acid determination. Remediation of Aqueous Phosphate Agricultural Runoff Using Slag and Al/Mg Modified Biochar

Slag and Al/Mg oxide modified Douglas fir biochar (AMOB) were compared for their phosphate adsorbing abilities for use individually or in combination for simulated agriculture run-off remediation in wetlands. Conformal Loading Effects of P3CT-Na Polymers on the Performance of Inverted Perovskite Solar Cells

The conformal loading effects of P3CT-Na polymers on ITO/glass samples were investigated using different concentrations of P3TC-Na/water solution, which significantly influenced the device efficiency of the resultant inverted perovskite solar cells. The obtained water-droplet contact angle images, surface morphological images, photoluminescence spectra and X-ray diffraction patterns show that the hydrophilic moiety of the P3CT-Na polymers plays an important role in the conformal loading effects, thereby resulting in a smoother perovskite crystalline film due to the formation of merged grains. It is noted that the average power conversion efficiency increases from 14.83% to 17.27% with a decrease in the concentration of the P3CT-Na/water solution from 60 wt% to 48 wt%.

In the present study, we investigated and compared the effect of microwaves and freeze-drying methods on the dehydration and rehydration kinetics in the phenolic, anthocyanin, aroma profiles, and antioxidant properties of tree tomato fruit (Solanum betaceum). The tree tomatoes were dried using microwaves at 350 W, 500 W, and 650 W, and then freeze-dried. Differences in Physiological Metabolism and Antioxidant System of Different Ecotypes of Miscanthus floridulus under Cu Stress

To reveal the similarities and differences in the resistance mechanisms of different ecotypes to Cu stress, a pot experiment was used to systematically compare the physiological responses of non-mining ecotype Miscanthus floridulus (collected from Boluo County, Huizhou City) and mining ecotype Miscanthus floridulus (collected from Dabaoshan mining area) under different Cu concentrations. The results showed that chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b and total chlorophyll in the leaves of the two ecotypes of M. floridulus were negatively correlated with Cu stress concentration (p < 0.01), but the extent of decrease for the ecotypes in the mining area was lower than that for the ecotypes in the non-mining area. Pilot-Plant-Scale Extraction of Antioxidant Compounds from Lavender: Experimental Data and Methodology for an Economic Assessment

The techno-economic feasibility of lavender essential oil supercritical CO2 extraction was studied. The process was scaled up to a pilot plant, and the extraction yield, composition, and antioxidant potential of the extracts were evaluated at 60 °C and 180 bar or 250 bar, achieving a maximum yield of 6.9% and a percentage inhibition of the extracts of more than 80%. These results drove the development of a business plan for three scenarios corresponding to different extraction volumes (20, 50, and 100 L) and annual production. The SWOT matrix showed that this is a promising business idea. The COM was calculated and an investment analysis was performed. The profitability of this process was demonstrated by means of a financial analysis for 8 years, considering a selling price of 1.38 EUR/g for the extract from the 20 L plant and 0.9 EUR/g for industrial-scale plants, supported by the price curve. Carotenoids Recovery Enhancement by Supercritical CO2 Extraction from Tomato Using Seed Oils as Modifiers

The food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries have strong demands for lycopene, the carotenoid with the highest antioxidant activity. Usually, this carotenoid is extracted from tomatoes using various extraction methods. This work aims to improve the quantity and quality of extracts from tomato slices by enhancing the recovery of the carotenoids from the solid matrix to the solvent using 20 w/w% seeds as modifiers and supercritical CO2 extraction with optimal parameters as the method. Tomato (TSM), camelina (CSM) and hemp (HSM) seeds were used as modifiers due to their quality (polyunsaturated fatty acids content of 53−72%). A solubility of ~10 mg carotenoids/100 g of oil was obtained for CSM and HSM, while, for TSM, the solubility was 28% higher (due to different compositions of long carbon chains). Ternary Inclusion Complex of Sinapic Acid with Hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin and Hydrophilic Polymer Prepared by Microwave Technology

Sinapic acid (SA) is a poorly water-soluble substance which could result in poor bioavailability. The aim of this study was to determine the “hydroxypropyl β-cyclodextrin (HPβCD)” solubilization of SA in the presence of the auxiliary substance hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) and to evaluate the ternary inclusion complex prepared by microwave technology. Phase-solubility profiles showed that HPβCD exhibited the greatest solubilizing effect on SA in the presence of HPMC. The enhanced rate of SA dissolution was exhibited by a ternary complex. Outcomes of analyses such as “DSC, FTIR, NMR, and SEM” confirmed the embedding of SA into the cavity of the HPβCD and the formation of a ternary inclusion complex.
