Production Profile of Farms and Methane and Nitrous Oxide Emissions

The negative impact of agricultural production on the environment is manifested, above all, in the emission of greenhouse gases (GHG). The goals of this study were to estimate methane and nitrous oxide emissions at the level of individual farms and indicate differences in emissions depending on the type of production, and to investigate dependencies between greenhouse gas emissions and economic indicators. Methane and nitrous oxide emissions were estimated at three types of farms in Poland, based on FADN data: field crops, milk, and mixed. Data were from 2004−2018. Statistical analysis confirmed the relationship between greenhouse gas emissions and economic performance. On milk farms, the value of methane and nitrous oxide emissions increased with increased net value added and farm income. The calculation method commonly used in the industry takes into consideration mainly fuel consumption (excluding electricity) and the amount of removed moisture which is reflected in the unit MJ·(Mg·%)−1. This is not a scientific approach because the result will change if the basic moisture is different (drying from 21% to 18% will consume less energy than drying from 18% to 15%). This paper aims to compare the energy consumption of two industrial continuous flow grain dryers powered by LPG and hard coal based on a comprehensive approach to energy efficiency calculation enriched with electricity consumption, flow measurements, and control of grain moisture. Microwave Torrefaction of Oat Hull: Effect of Temperature and Residence Time

Microwave torrefaction of oat hull was conducted to enhance its physicochemical properties. A bench-top reactor with an internal stirrer was used for oat hull pretreatment at temperatures of 225 °C, 255 °C, and 285 °C, and residence times of 3, 6, and 9 min, respectively. Results showed that a high temperature level at 3 min residence time or severe torrefaction increased calorific values by up to 35% of its original value, while decreasing mass yield down to 60.77%. Severe torrefaction further decreased moisture absorption, moisture content, and grinding energy consumption but decreased energy yield and bulk density. Residence time had no significant effect on biomass physicochemical changes; however, production cost may be significantly increased by longer residence times. In recent studies, various reports reveal that stubble burning of crop residues in India generates nearly 150 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2), more than 9 million tons of carbon monoxide (CO), a quarter-million tons of sulphur oxides (SOX), 1 million tons of particulate matter and more than half a million tons of black carbon. These contribute directly to environmental pollution, as well as the haze in the Indian capital, New Delhi, and the diminishing glaciers of the Himalayas. In this study, the densification of three agriculture waste biomasses (corn cobs, cotton stalks, and sunflower) is investigated using the torrefaction technique. The samples were pyrolyzed under mild temperature conditions (200−320 °C) and at different residence times (10 min−60 min). The thermal properties of the obtained bio-char samples were analyzed via thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA). Compositional analysis of the torrefied samples was also carried out to determine the presence of hemicellulose, cellulose, and lignin contents. According to the results of this study, optimum temperature conditions were found to be 260 °C−300 °C along with a residence time of 20 min−30 min. Based on the composition analysis, it was found that biochar contains more lignin and celluloses and lower hemicellulose contents than do the original samples. This research looked at the state of soils faced with urbanization processes in the Arctic region of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous District (YANAO). Soils recently used in agriculture, which are now included in the infrastructure of the cities of Salekhard, Labytnangi, Kharsaim, and Aksarka in the form of various parks and public gardens were studied. Morphological, physico-chemical, and agrochemical studies of selected soils were conducted. Significant differences in fertility parameters between urbanized abandoned agricultural soils and mature soils of the region were revealed. The quality of soil resources was also evaluated in terms of their ecotoxicology condition, namely, the concentrations of trace metals in soils were determined and their current condition was assessed using calculations of various individual and complex soil quality indices.

Lowered power loss and asymmetrically electrical parameters are reported in the DC aging of Co2O3-doped ZnO varistors in this paper. Based on the frequency domain dielectric responses of the pristine and degraded samples, the present study explores the roles of point defects in the aging process via dielectric relaxations and their parameters. It is found that breakdown field increased more in the positive direction than the negative direction. Nonlinearity increased in the positive direction, whereas it decreased in the negative direction, and leakage current density increased more in the negative direction than the positive direction. Two isomorphic sets of grains, small and large, were analysed—without specifying their dimensions—under the acronym CMC (Curve of Maximum Compression) and taking into account the effects of segregation CMCS. The proposal is particularly valuable for optimal blend preparation in the gravity system in cokemaking. The main advantage of this work is the proposal of using the grains triangle, which limits the values calculated by the relations: bulk density-share of coarse/fine grains, for different levels of moisture content. The relationship between agriculture and climate change is two-sided. Agriculture is the branch of the economy most affected by the ongoing processes. It is also a large emitter of greenhouse gases and there are more and more voices about the need to reduce emissions. This paper describes an analysis of the effects of adjusting the intensity of filter backwash to the water temperature. The consequences of the lack of such adjustment for the life of filter beds, the amount of water used for backwashing, the amount of energy used for backwashing and the quality of the first filtrate are presented. In order to determine the losses and profits resulting from controlling the intensity of backwash water depending on its temperature, an analysis was carried out at a water treatment plant in southern Poland. Laboratory measurements were used to determine the granulation and specific gravity of sand grains filling the filtration beds. Biomass, a basic product of agriculture, is one of the main sinks of carbon in global cycle. Additionally, it can be used as a renewable source of energy, leading to depletion in CO2 emissions. The paper presents the results of estimations on the current and potential share of catch crop cultivation in climate change mitigation, in Poland, where the agricultural sector plays a significant economic role. The estimation of CO2 assimilation in biomass was performed on the basis of our own data on yields of commonly used catch crops, obtained in randomly selected 80 farms in Poland, and the content of carbon in the biomass. The properties, types, and physical and chemical aspects of pig slurry used in the fermentation process were presented. Characterization of the pig slurry microflora for a controlled biogas production process was performed. A pilot biogas treatment installation was presented on the example of a farm with 1100 Dan Bred fatteners kept in a grate system. Small possible hydrocarbon gas reservoirs were analysed in the Bjelovar Subdepression in Northern Croatia. This area includes the Neogene−Quaternary, mostly clastics, sequences, reaching 3000+ metres in the deepest part. The shallow south-eastern part of the Drava Depression contains a subdepression characterised with several, mostly small, discovered hydrocarbon fields, where the majority are located on the northern subdepression margin. The reason is the large distance from the main depressional migration pathways and main, deep, mature source rock depocenters. However, two promising unconventional targets were discovered inside the subdepression and both were proven by drilling. Commonly based on the liquid diffusion theory, drying theoretical studies in porous materials has been directed to plate, cylinder, and sphere, and few works are applied to non-conventional geometries. In this sense, this work aims to study, theoretically, the drying of solids with oblate spheroidal geometry based on the thermodynamics of irreversible processes. Mathematical modeling is proposed to describe, simultaneously, the heat and mass transfer (liquid and vapor) during the drying process, considering the variability of the transport coefficients and the convective boundary conditions on the solid surface, with particular reference to convective drying of lentil grains at low temperature and moderate air relative humidity. Conventional energy sources often do not fully satisfy the needs of a modern economy, especially given the climate changes associated with them. These issues should be addressed by diversification of energy generation, including the development of renewable energy sources (RES). Solid biomass will play a major part in the process in Poland. The function of rural areas, along with a well-developed agricultural and forest economy sector, will be a key aspect in this as these areas are suitable for solid biomass acquisition in various ways. The negative effect of liquid and gaseous fuel combustion is toxic gases (i.e., carbon and nitrogen oxides NOx) and particulate matter (PM) formation. The content of harmful and toxic components of exhaust gases is strongly dependent on the quality and type of burnt fuel.
