Daobao Luo, Wujun Ji, Xin Hu
June 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: HEV, multi-objective optimization, PSO-GA, transmission parameters
Most of the traditional hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) choose to optimize the transmission ratio parameters, and the parameter changes of the whole vehicle and other components are only calculated as fixed values. It is difficult to give consideration to the optimization of the economy and power of hybrid vehicles. Therefore, the research proposes to build the transmission ratio, the required power of the vehicle’s working mode, and other models through the dynamic analysis. The parameters of the whole vehicle are optimized on the basis of parameter matching. At the same time, this paper chooses to adopt a hybrid optimization algorithm, combining particle swarm optimization (PSO) and genetic algorithm (GA). The weighted average method and constraint method are used to design the fitness function. The simulation experiment is carried out by Cruise software and MATLAB. Compare the iterative fitness of the PSO-GA algorithm with the traditional PSO and GA algorithm. It can be concluded th... [more]

Guoguo Wu, Xuerong Ji, Guolai Yang, Ye Jia, Chuanchuan Cao
June 7, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: continuous wavelet transform, deep learning, fault diagnosis, rolling bearing
Rolling element bearings (REBs) are the most frequent cause of machine breakdowns. Traditional methods for fault diagnosis in rolling bearings rely on feature extraction and signal processing techniques. However, these methods can be affected by the complexity of the underlying patterns and the need for expert knowledge during signal analysis. This paper proposes a novel signal-to-image method in which the raw signal data are transformed into 2D images using continuous wavelet transform (CWT). This transformation enhances the features extracted from the raw data, allowing for further analysis and interpretation. Transformed images of both normal and faulty rolling bearings from the Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) dataset were used with deep-learning models from the ResNet family. They can automatically learn and identify patterns in raw vibration signals after continuous wavelet transform is used, eliminating the need for manual feature extraction. To further improve the trainin... [more]

Keywords: asymmetric operation, efficiency, Model Predictive Control, multilevel topology, power losses, symmetric operation, three-phase four-leg topology
Wave energy converters are attracting attention as an energy source that can respond to climate change. In order to increase the energy efficiency of the wave energy converters, efficient power converters are also required. The efficient converters require operation at a low switching frequency, which increases the weight and volume of the passive components. Therefore, in this paper, the performance of various types of topologies is compared to select the optimal power converter for wave energy converters. In order to cope with the unbalanced operation and unbalanced load of renewable energy, in this paper, the topology of the four-leg type is analyzed centrally. In addition, the analysis was performed by applying the model predictive control that can quickly respond to the rapid energy change of wave energy. In addition, model predictive control was applied to the four-leg converter analyzed in this paper because it is suitable for application to atypical topologies. For performance... [more]

Keywords: Enhanced OLSR Routing Protocol, MANETs, Network Infrastructure, OLSR Routing, Optimized Control Interval OLSR
MANET (Mobile Ad hoc Networks) functionality is determined by routing protocols’ ability to adjust to atypical changes in information and communication technologies, topological systems, and connection status. Due to interference, node migration, the growth of several pathways, security, and propagation loss, MANET network configurations are dynamic. The proactive routing protocol enhances the message flow utilized in the neighborhood discovery process by using the multipoint relays (MPR) approach. In order to increase the protocol’s effectiveness and efficiency while maintaining the OLSR protocol’s reliability, the research presented in this paper proposed an improved OCI-OLSR (Optimized Control Interval-Optimized Link State Routing) that focuses on better control interval management, an advanced MPR selection process, reducing neighbor hold time as well as decreasing flooding. The suggested proposed protocol was examined using the NS3 simulator, and it was compared to the standard OL... [more]

Keywords: advanced process control (APC), controlled nucleation, lyophilization, Process Analytical Technology (PAT), process modelling, Quality by Design (QbD)
Lyophilization is a widely used preservation method for thermosensitive products. It consists of three process steps: freezing, primary and secondary drying. One of the major drawbacks is the long processing time. The main optimization effort was put into the primary drying phase since it is usually the longest phase. However, the freezing step is of immense importance for process efficiency and product quality. The lack of control during freezing comprises a challenge for process design and tech transfer. In this study, four different freezing steps (shelf-ramped freezing with and without holding step, precooled shelves and an ice fog method for controlled nucleation) are used and their impact on primary drying experiments and simulations is shown. Only the ice fog method is able to control the nucleation temperature leading to low dry layer resistances with low deviations. During the primary drying simulations, the control of the nucleation temperature drastically increases the preci... [more]

Keywords: event-triggered mechanism, infinitely distributed delays, observer-based PID control, periodic random denial-of-service jamming attacks
This paper is concerned with the observer-based H∞ proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control issue for discrete-time systems using event-triggered mechanism subject to periodic random denial of service (DoS) jamming attacks and infinitely distributed delays. In order to characterize the occurrence of periodic random DoS jamming attacks in the network channel between controller and actuator, the Kronecker delta function is used to represent the periodic switching between the sleeping period and attack period, and a Bernoulli-distributed random variable is utilized to reflect the probabilistic occurrence of DoS attacks. Infinitely distributed delay is involved to reflect actual state lag. The relative event-triggering mechanism is employed to reduce unnecessary information transmission and save communication energy in the network channel between sensor and observer. An observer-based PID controller is constructed for the regulation of the system to achieve an appropriate working eff... [more]

June 7, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dynamic simulation, flowsheeting, olefin metathesis, process control, process design, propylene production, safety
This article considers the design and control of the 2-butene metathesis process. The process transforms a low-value feedstock derived from a fluid catalytic cracking unit into more valuable products. The economical optimization is applied to the preheat−reaction and separation sections, with the objective of minimizing the total annual cost. The dynamic response and control of the plant are evaluated for feed flow perturbations. Although the process control system acts as a first line of defense against potential hazards, other independent safety layers are discussed with safety limits specific to the critical equipment of the 2-butene metathesis unit. The results prove that the metathesis reaction of 2-butene over a mesoporous tungsten catalyst is economically attractive. For a 5.7 t/h feed rate consisting of 2-butene (70% molar) and n-butane (30% molar), a reaction−separation plant (without recycle) requires 6570 × 103 $ investment and has a profitability of 2300 × 103 $/year.

Keywords: DC–DC LLC converter, electric vehicle charger, Phase-Shift Modulation, Pulse Frequency Modulation, small signal modeling, V2X mode
Bidirectional DC−DC converters are frequently chosen for applications requiring high power density such as in bidirectional electric vehicle (EV) chargers. Vehicle to Everything (V2X) technology makes the EV battery an electrical energy source. In this article, the use of a DC−DC LLC converter used in a bidirectional EV charger is reviewed. Different modeling approaches of the DC−DC LLC converter, such as small and large signal modeling, are discussed. Common modulation strategies applied to the DC−DC LLC converter in V2X mode, such as Pulse Frequency Modulation (PFM), Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) and Phase-Shift Modulation (PSM), are presented. The new challenge is to present the main characteristics and limitations of each modulation strategy in order to cover the whole operating zone of the EV charger in V2X mode. Furthermore, different control strategies based on a small or large signal model combined with different modulation strategies are highlighted. Linear and nonlinear contro... [more]

Keywords: equivalent consumption minimization strategy, Model Predictive Control, recurrent neural network, series hybrid electric mine trucks
This paper presents an equivalent consumption minimization strategy (ECMS) based on model predictive control for series hybrid electric mine trucks (SHE-MTs), the objective of which is to minimize fuel consumption. Two critical works are presented to achieve the goal. Firstly, to gain the real-time speed trajectory on-line, a speed prediction model is established by utilizing a recurrent neural network (RNN). Specifically, a hybrid optimization algorithm based on the genetic algorithm (GA) and the particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSOA) is used to enhance the prediction precision of the speed prediction model. Then, on this basis, an ECMS based on MPC (ECMS-MPC) is proposed. In this process, to improve the real-time and working condition adaptability of the ECMS-MPC, the power-optimal fuel consumption mapping model of the range extender is established, and the equivalent factor (EF) is real-time adjusted by means of the PSOA. Finally, taking a cement mining road as the research ob... [more]

Kangji Li, Yanhui Mi, Wen Zheng
May 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: crop growth, Energy Efficiency, greenhouse climate, optimal control, POD, rolling horizon
The environmental factors of greenhouses affect crop growth greatly and are mutually coupled and spatially distributed. Due to the complexity of greenhouse climate modeling, the current optimal control of greenhouse crop growth rarely considers the spatial distribution issues of environmental parameters. Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) is a technique to reduce the order of a model by projecting it onto an orthogonal basis. In this paper, POD is used to extract environmental features from Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations, and a low-dimensional feature subspace is obtained by energy truncation. With multi-dimensional interpolation, fast and low-dimensional reconstruction of the dynamic variation of greenhouse climates is achieved. On this basis, a rolling-horizon optimal control scheme is proposed. For each finite horizon, the external meteorological data are updated, and the response of the greenhouse environment is quickly calculated by the POD model. With the perfo... [more]

Keywords: shock absorber tests, tire energy properties, tire radial stiffness, tired wheel, vehicle dynamics control, vehicle testing and diagnostics
This article deals with the influence of the elastic-damping properties (energy losses) of tired wheels on the results of the evaluation of the technical condition (dynamic properties) of automotive suspensions carried out on the diagnostic line. The purpose of this paper is to point out the inadequacies of test stands for assessing the technical condition of vehicle suspensions. The diagnostic line used in the testing featured two testing stations. The test object was a passenger car with hydro-pneumatic suspension. This enabled the conducting of suspension tests for two settings (comfort and dynamic positions). The tests were conducted for four different air pressures in the tyres of tired wheels. This made it possible to determine, for each wheel, four graphs of the load versus tyre deflection (radial stiffness characteristics). These graphs were used to determine the values of the stiffness coefficients, energy loss, and damping characteristics as well as to identify the correlatio... [more]

Spray cooling has been considered one of the most promising thermal control methods of high-heat flux devices. Most of the spray cooling research focuses on electronic components as the main application object to achieve higher heat dissipation heat flow in ambient temperature regions for small areas. Water is the most common cooling medium. This paper investigates the application of spray cooling thermal control over large areas. In this study, the heat-transfer characteristics of liquid nitrogen (LN2) for large areas was investigated by conducting experiments. The test surface is 500 mm × 500 mm, which was cooled by a nine-nozzle array. The spray nozzles used in the experiment were conical nozzles with an orifice diameter of 1.6 mm, a spray angle of 120°, and a spray height of 42 mm. Liquid nitrogen was forcefully ejected from nozzles by the high pressure of a liquid storage tank to cool the test surface. According to the cooled surfaces, spray directions, and spray pressures, three... [more]

Keywords: core cooling, core heating, core temperature control, electrical insulation, thermoelectric cooler
Electric motors and generators underpin life in today’s world. They are numerous and widespread and consume approximately 45% of the world’s energy. Any improvements in efficiency or reductions in their whole-of-life costs are actively and continually being sought. While designs accommodate the removal of heat caused by internal losses because of inefficiencies, temperature variations due to load changes and environmental temperature fluctuations, and system harmonic content still stresses electrical insulation systems. This causes the fretting of insulation, combined with moisture ingress, which leads to leakage currents and, consequently, the early failure of the electrical insulation. This paper explores the addition of thermoelectric coolers/heaters (TECs) or Peltier effect devices. We show that these solid-state devices can actively support the thermal management of a motor by keeping its internals hot, reducing moisture ingress when off, and assisting in heat removal when under l... Keywords: dynamic reactive power compensation, finite control set model predictive control, hybrid active power filter, LCL-filter, Model Predictive Control, parameter estimation
This paper presents a novel strategy for online parameter estimation in a hybrid active power filter (HAPF). This HAPF makes use of existing capacitor banks which it combines with an active power filter (APF) in order to dynamically compensate reactive power. The equipment is controlled with finite control set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) due to its already well-known fast dynamic response. The HAPF model is similar to a grid-connected LCL-filtered converter, so the direct control of the HAPF current can cause resonances and instabilities. To solve this, indirect control, using the capacitor voltage and the inverter-side current, is applied in the cost function, which creates high dependency between the system parameters and the equipment capability to compensate the load reactive power. This dependency is evaluated by simulations, in which the capacitor bank reactance is shown to be the most sensitive parameter, and, thus, responsible for inaccuracies in the FCS-MPC references.... May 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electric railway system, low-frequency oscillation, small-signal impedance model
An electric railway system is a typical single-phase grid-connected converter system, and the low-frequency oscillation (LFO) phenomenon in electric railway systems has been widely reported around the world. Previous research has indicated that the LFO is a small-signal instability issue caused by impedance mismatching between the traction network system and electric trains. Therefore, this paper proposes an improved q-axis current control method to reshape the train’s impedance. The proposed method can be implemented easily by relating a reverse q-axis reactive current directly to the reference of the q-axis current under the dq current decoupled control. Moreover, considering the additional q-axis reactive current control, a small-signal impedance model of a train−network system is built. The impedance-based analysis results indicate that the proposed q-axis reactive current feedback control can increase the magnitude of the train’s impedance, which is beneficial to enhancing the sys... Keywords: controller design, coupled inductors, DC–DC converters, interleaved boost, small-signal model
Interleaved DC−DC converters have significant advantages in improving the capability of power converters, and coupling the filtering inductor of the converter could further increase the power density. However, existing modeling and controller designs are complex and require multiple sensors to be involved in the control, which is not conducive to engineering implementation and reducing production costs. In view of this problem, taking a two-phase interleaved boost converter with a coupled inductor as an example, the small-signal models of the converter are derived for the resistive load and constant voltage source load using the state averaging method. The total inductor current is engaged in the control as a feedback signal, avoiding the coupling effect of the inductor on increasing the complexity of the controller. Based on this, a double closed-loop controller is designed, and a prototype of the two-phase interleaved boost converter with coupled inductor is built. Only one current s... [more]

Keywords: active ripple rejection, LLC converter, quasi-resonant controller, small signal modeling, SPLL
This paper has analyzed the defects of the traditional extended description function (EDF) based LLC small signal modeling method when driving light emitting diode (LED) load and proposed an accuracy improvement method. Detailed small signal model modeling methods have been deduced, and the accuracy of different modeling methods has been compared thoroughly. To suppress the second-order harmonic ripple in the direct current link-induced output current ripple, a quasi-resonant controller (QRC) is adopted to realize active ripple rejection (ARR). Considering the frequency of the second-order harmonic ripple changes with the grid voltage frequency, a single-phase software phase lock loop (SPLL) is adopted to extract the frequency of the second-order harmonic. By dynamically regulating the control parameter of the QRC according to the locked second-order frequency, output voltage ripple active rejection ability immune to grid voltage frequency deviation is obtained. Based on the deduced ac... [more]

Keywords: condition based maintenance, early fault detection, multi-MW gensets SCADA data, multivariate time series
Increasing interest in natural gas-fired gensets is motivated by District Heating (DH) network applications, especially in urban areas. Even if they represent customary solutions, when used in DH, duty regimes are driven by network thermal energy demands resulting in discontinuous operation, which affects their remaining useful life. As such, the attention on effective condition-based maintenance has gained momentum. In this paper, a novel unsupervised anomaly detection framework is proposed for gensets in DH networks based on Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) data. The framework relies on multivariate Machine-Learning (ML) regression models trained with a Leave-One-Out Cross-Validation method. Model residuals generated during the testing phase are then post-processed with a sliding threshold approach based on a rolling average. This methodology is tested against nine major failures that occurred on the gas genset installed in the Aosta DH plant in Italy. The results sho... [more]

The models of electric locomotive traction drives with asynchronous electric motors with either vector or direct torque control were adapted to account for the possible presence of the aforementioned operational factors. As a result of the modeling, the starting characteristics of the electric traction drives with different control systems were obtained both in the absence and in the presence of power supply and load disturbances. The following cases were investigated for the drive with vector and direct torque control in the absence of power supply and torque disturbances: drive output at the rated speed of rotation of the electric motor shaft; 10% redu...
