A Solar Dually PVT Driven Direct Expansion Heat Pump One-Year Field Operation Results at Continental Climate
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: control, field results, heat pump, HP, hybrid, photovoltaic-thermal, PV/T, PVT, system
The high energy-consuming building sector needs to meet both electricity and heat demands. In a nearly zero energy building scenario, most of the consumed energy would be generated locally by means of renewable solutions that nowadays seem not to provide an attractive performance or cost-competitiveness. Solar-based technologies tend to be the most promising ones, but for high densely populated areas, the usual photovoltaic or thermal single approaches may not be efficient enough. The current work is focused on the analysis of the dual use of the solar resource by means of hybrid PVT collectors and their smart combination with direct expansion heat pumps through predictive control strategies. To that end, a system was developed, installed in a real-use single-family house at a continental climate for domestic hot water application, operated and monitored for one entire year. The average day indicator results show 83% renewable energy share, 220% self-sufficiency ratio, 41% heat pump se... [more]

Parasitic Capacitance Effects on Active Clamp Flyback Output Characteristics: Application to IPOP Connection
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: active clamp flyback, current sharing, DC–DC power conversion, high step-up voltage ratio, output impedance, parallel connected modules
Different mechanisms for balancing power between parallel connected modules have been presented in recent years. They have been broadly classified into active and passive methods. The high output impedance of topologies, including active clamp networks, suggests that they can achieve output current sharing passively when they are connected in parallel. However, some parasitic elements, such as stray capacitances and leakage inductances, have not been considered in the theoretical analyses. Moreover, these need to be taken into account when a high step-up ratio is required because they modify the behavior and output impedance of a module, which changes the current balance. This paper presents a detailed analysis of the influence of parasitic capacitances on active clamp flyback converters that were parallel connected, using the output impedance as a current self-balance method. The proposed solution to alleviate the negative effects on current balance was also studied and validated as a... [more]

Fault Diagnosis of Tennessee Eastman Process with XGB-AVSSA-KELM Algorithm
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: AVSSA, fault diagnosis, feature selection, KELM, Tennessee Eastman process, XGBOOST
In fault detection and the diagnosis of large industrial systems, whose chemical processes usually exhibit complex, high-dimensional, time-varying and non-Gaussian characteristics, the classification accuracy of traditional methods is low. In this paper, a kernel limit learning machine (KELM) based on an adaptive variation sparrow search algorithm (AVSSA) is proposed. Firstly, the dataset is optimized by removing redundant features using the eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBOOST) model. Secondly, a new optimization algorithm, AVSSA, is proposed to automatically adjust the network hyperparameters of KELM to improve the performance of the fault classifier. Finally, the optimized feature sequences are fed into the proposed classifier to obtain the final diagnosis results. The Tennessee Eastman (TE) chemical process is used to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method through multidimensional diagnostic metrics. The results show that our proposed diagnosis method can significantly impro... [more]

Consensus-Based Distributed Secondary Frequency Control Method for AC Microgrid Using ADRC Technique
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: distributed control, disturbance rejection, frequency deviation, microgrid, unmodeled dynamics
To ensure safe and reliable operation, the ability to ride through various disturbances is vital for a microgrid with multi-inverters. As the voltage and frequency support comes from the power-electronic-based inverters, it is necessary to find a proper control strategy to improve the rejection ability of the DG inverter against disturbances. In this regard, this paper proposes a new distributed secondary frequency control approach for islanded microgrids, in which the main purpose is to remove the frequency deviation under droop control method with better disturbance rejection performance. Unlike many traditional approaches which rely on a detailed control model, the proposed one needs little model information thanks to the model-independent characteristic of active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) technique. A linear extended state observer is introduced to estimate the useless model dynamics (including unknown disturbances, unmodeled dynamics and nonlinear dynamics) which are th... [more]

On the Development of Offshore Wind Turbine Technology: An Assessment of Reliability Rates and Fault Detection Methods in a Changing Market
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: direct drive, Fault Detection, geared, offshore, reliability, transfer learning, wind energy
Offshore wind turbine drive train technology is evolving as developers increase size, aim to maximise availability and adapt to changing electricity grid requirements. This work first of all explores offshore technology market trends observed in Europe, providing a comprehensive overview of installed and planned capacity, showing a clear shift from smaller high-speed geared machines to larger direct-drive machines. To examine the implications of this shift in technology on reliability, stop rates for direct-drive and gear-driven turbines are compared between 39 farms across Europe and South America. This showed several key similarities between configurations, with the electrical system contributing to largest amount of turbine downtime in either case. When considering overall downtime across all components, the direct-drive machine had the highest value, which could be mainly attributed to comparatively higher downtime associated with the electrical, generator and control systems. Self-Sensing Control of Open-End Winding PMSMs Fed by an Asymmetrical Hybrid Multilevel Inverter
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: high efficiency, low frequency modulation, multilevel inverter, Open-end Winding, sensorless motor drive
The paper presents a self-sensing control technique for a special type of multilevel motor drive featuring an Open-end Winding Permanent-Magnet Synchronous Motor fed on one side by a main multilevel inverter (MLI) and on the other side by an auxiliary two-level inverter (TLI). In order to minimize the power losses, the MLI manages the machine active power operating at a low-switching frequency. The TLI instead acts as an active power filter and operates at a higher switching frequency and a lower DC-Bus voltage than the MLI. The current control task is shared between the two inverters, as a predictive action is exerted by the MLI, while a feedback action is accomplished by the TLI. Common sensorless rotor position estimation techniques cannot be straightforwardly applied on such a system, due to the particular drive structure. Therefore, a specific technique has been carried out, able to ensure satisfactory efficiency and control performance in all the operating speed ranges by optimal... [more]

This paper studied the bond performance of full-grouting rock bolts with a theoretical analysis. The variable controlling method was used to study the effect of parameters on the load-carrying force of bars. The results showed that when the bar diameter grew from 15 mm to 25 mm, the maximum force of the bars rose from 194 kN to 349 kN, growing by 80%. As for the stiffness, it grew by 108%. Moreover, when the elastic modulus grew from 50 GPa to 200 GPa, the maximum force rose from 229 kN to 269 kN, only growing by 17%. As for the stiffness, it grew by 100%. When the grouting length increased from 2 m to 3 m, the maximum force rose from 269 kN to 364 kN, growing by 35%. However, the grouting length had almost no effect on the stiffness. Lastly, for the bond slip when the bond strength was reached, when it grew from 1 mm to 3 mm, the maximum force dropped from 281 kN to 258 kN, dropping by 8%. As for the stiffness, it dropped by 44%. Thermal Analysis of Power Converters for DFIG-Based Wind Energy Conversion Systems during Voltage Sags
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: DFIG, power semiconductors, thermal analysis, voltage sags, wind energy conversion systems
The doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) and back-to-back converter are very sensitive to power quality disturbances in grid-connected wind energy conversion systems (WECSs). Special attention has been given to protect the system from voltage sags, considering the introduction of several low-voltage ride-through (LVRT) techniques in the literature. However, only few works have really analyzed the behavior of power semiconductors during such phenomena in terms of the thermal stresses, whereas the existing studies are focused on balanced voltage sags only. In this context, this work presents a thermal profile analysis of power semiconductors in the grid-side converter (GSC) and rotor-side converter (RSC) considering a DFIG-based WECS submitted to symmetrical and asymmetrical voltage sags. The system is modeled using PLECS software and results on a 2.0 MW system are presented and thoroughly discussed. The results show that it is possible to meet the ride-through requirements during both... [more]

MPPT Control of Grid Connected DFIG at Variable Wind Speed
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: doubly fed induction generator, MPPT, variable speed WECS, wind energy
In this study, maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control of a grid-connected doubly fed induction generated (DFIG)-based wind energy conversion system (WECS) at variable wind speed was designed and analyzed. The real wind speed data of the Edremit/Balıkesir region in Turkey was used as the wind speed profile. A N90/2.5 MW wind turbine model of Nordex Company was used in the study. Firstly, a conventional PI controller was applied to both rotor and grid side converters. The rotor-side converter (RSC) controls the power generated from the DFIG, whereas the grid-side converter (GSC) controls the DC bus voltage. An MPPT controller was applied to the RSC to generate reference torque at instant variable wind speeds. Thus, the system’s response time, electromagnetic torque, generated power, and grid-side currents parameters were improved. In the MPPT controller, the reference torque value is produced by using the angular velocity and reference angular velocity values of the DFIG. The propos... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: controlling factors, diagenetic evolution, Dibei gas field, Kuqa depression, sweet spot, tight sandstone reservoir
Great progress has been made in the exploration of tight sandstone gas resources in Kuqa depression. Great progress has been made in Dibei structural belt, which proves the previously unproven favorable area for tight sandstone gas. The physical properties, controlling factors, and characteristics of tight sandstone from the Ahe (J1a) Formation in the Dibei gas reservoir are analyzed. The results show that the tight sandstone of the J1a Formation is mainly feldspar lithic sandstone, with low porosity (average 9.1%) and low permeability (average 0.09 mD). Compaction (average compaction rate 61.9%) reduces porosity more than cementation (average cementation rate 14.3%). Secondary dissolution pores (average thin section porosity is 3.4%) dominate. The homogenization temperature has two peaks; the first peak is 85−110 °C, and the other peak is 115−140 °C, indicating that oil and gas experienced two filling stages at 12 Ma and 4.5 Ma, respectively. One-Shot Fault Diagnosis of Wind Turbines Based on Meta-Analogical Momentum Contrast Learning
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: model-agnostic meta-learning, momentum contrast learning, one-shot learning, wind turbines
The rapid development of artificial intelligence offers more opportunities for intelligent mechanical diagnosis. Fault diagnosis of wind turbines is beneficial to improve the reliability of wind turbines. Due to various reasons, such as difficulty in obtaining fault data, random changes in operating conditions, or compound faults, many deep learning algorithms show poor performance. When fault samples are small, ordinary deep learning will fall into overfitting. Few-shot learning can effectively solve the problem of overfitting caused by fewer fault samples. A novel method based on meta-analogical momentum contrast learning (MA-MOCO) is proposed in this paper to solve the problem of the very few samples of wind turbine failures, especially one-shot. By improving the momentum contrast learning (MOCO) and using the training idea of meta-learning, the one-shot fault diagnosis of wind turbine drivetrain is analyzed. The proposed model shows a higher accuracy than other common models (e.g.,... [more]

Energy Balance Control for Improving Transient Performance of DC Bus Voltage in Power Electronic Transformer for the Voltage-Sensitive Loads
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: dc bus voltage, different time scales, energy balance control, power electronic transformer
The power electronic transformer (PET), as a main topology for the energy router in the energy internet, consists of the rectifiers, the dual active bridge (DAB), and the inverter, and these three parts are connected by two dc buses. So, the performance of the dc bus voltages is very important because it can totally affect the output waveforms of the dc and ac voltage, especially for the voltage-sensitive loads. Compared with the proportion integration (PI) control scheme, the energy control method utilizes the energy as the control variable, and the control strategy derived from the energy relationship, including the passive elements and all the interfaces, is more direct and explicit. In this paper, considering the energy between the dc bus capacitors and the input inductor and the load and the source in the PET topology, the energy balance control (EBC) strategy is proposed. For the two dc bus voltages, the energy balance relationship of the different time scales is used to decouple... [more]

Research on Oscillation Suppression Methods in Shunt Active Power Filter System
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: active filters, damping, harmonic distortion, reactive power control, resonance
The shunt active power filter (SAPF) system oscillation is a massive threat to the security and stability of the power grid. This study classifies SAPF oscillation into two categories according to the difference in mechanisms. The SAPF oscillation in one category is caused by the resonant characteristics of a switching noise filter and is called external loop amplification. The SAPF oscillation in the other category is induced by the presence of a capacitor in the load current for SAPF and is called self-excited oscillation. Unlike previous studies, this study tried to reveal the internal relationship between the two kinds of SAPF oscillation, present a general shunt virtual-damping-based SAPF oscillation suppression strategy covering the previous resonant damping method, and provide the discrete domain stability criterion of the control system. The sampling frequency was at least six times the resonant frequency. The stability region was enlarged with an increase in the sampling frequ... [more]

Torque Improvement of Six-Phase Permanent-Magnet Synchronous Machine Drive with Fifth-Harmonic Current Injection for Electric Vehicles
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: DC control, fifth-harmonic injection, maximum torque per peak current (MTPPC) control, six-phase PMSM, torque enhancement
This paper proposes a method to improve the output torque of a six-phase permanent-magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) within the same current peak limit through a fifth-harmonic injection into each phase current of the stator. Compared to the fifth + seventh-harmonic current-injection method used to improve the output torque of the six-phase PMSM, the control system can be stably controlled, and the controller design complexity decreased. This is because the harmonic component was converted into a direct current (DC) component and controlled by a proportional-integral (PI) controller instead of the fifth + seventh-harmonic injection method, which converts the harmonic component into an alternating current (AC) component and controls it with a resonance controller. The appropriate fifth-harmonic ratio for maximum output torque through fifth-harmonic injection was selected through optimization using values analyzed via fast Fourier transform (FFT) for stator phase harmonic current terms c... March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: electrohydraulic drive, loads adaptation, model-based control, modeling of the electromechanical drives
Electrohydraulic drives consist of several nonlinear elements, and the use and design of their control system is difficult. One of the most important parameters of the industrial drive is its settling time, which characterizes their dynamics. An interesting control method, which can be used for the improvement of electrohydraulic drive properties, is the model-following control (MFC). This technique enables to ensure the good control parameters of nonlinear systems in quite an easy way. In this paper, a modification consisting of changing the oil flow factor in the reference model is proposed. This improves both the dynamics of the electrohydraulic servo drive and the adaptation to the load forces, and thus energy consumption. The article describes the application of the MFC method to control an electrohydraulic servo drive in which a special proportional valve, with an permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM), is used. Simulation Research on Deadbeat Direct Torque and Flux Control of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: deadbeat control, deadbeat-direct torque and flux control, permanent-magnet synchronous motor, space vector modulation
Direct torque control (DTC) is widely used in a permanent-magnet synchronous motor (PMSM), but it has its own shortcomings caused by high torque ripple. Deadbeat-direct torque and flux control (DB-DTFC) is a new torque and flux method compared with DTC. However, the traditional DB-DTFC is often based on rotor-flux-oriented control. The reference voltage of the stator is computed in a rotor-flux-oriented coordinate system, and the solution involves solving quadratic equations, which will increase the burden of computational processing. To improve the computation of the reference voltages and the control performance, this paper proposes a new DB-DTFC algorithm and introduces its basic principles. First, the proposed DB-DTFC algorithm uses the forward Euler equation to solve the reference voltage in a stator-flux-oriented coordinate system. Second, the discrete mathematical model is used to predict the next control current to achieve deadbeat control. Third, the structural model of the pr... [more]

Real-Time Adaptive Selective Harmonic Elimination for Cascaded Full-Bridge Multilevel Inverter
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: closed-loop system, multilevel inverter, newton-raphson method, polynomial transform, selective harmonic elimination
Selective Harmonics Elimination is a high-efficiency modulation method for multilevel inverters that allows handling very high voltage applications. It eliminates the most significant harmonics and fixes the desired fundamental component. The main issue of these techniques is the complex process to obtain the appropriate switching-angles, being necessary to calculate them offline, meaning that if some disturbances occur, the system will not be compensated. This article proposes a real-time selective harmonic elimination for a single-phase cascaded multilevel inverter. The control strategy maintains constant the fundamental component of the output voltage while removing its third, fifth, and seventh order harmonics. The switching-angles are dynamically adapted to compensate for variations in the input voltage and the load. This is done by obtaining a virtual dynamic system using Groebner basis, an adaptation of the Newton-Raphson method, and implementing a digital PI controller into the... [more]

Keywords: bioethanol, ethanol specification, future perspectives, lignocellulosic ethanol, quality control
Ethanol is a promising biofuel that can replace fossil fuel, mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and represent a renewable building block for biochemical production. Ethanol can be produced from various feedstocks. First-generation ethanol is mainly produced from sugar- and starch-containing feedstocks. For second-generation ethanol, lignocellulosic biomass is used as a feedstock. Typically, ethanol production contains four major steps, including the conversion of feedstock, fermentation, ethanol recovery, and ethanol storage. Each feedstock requires different procedures for its conversion to fermentable sugar. Lignocellulosic biomass requires extra pretreatment compared to sugar and starch feedstocks to disrupt the structure and improve enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency. Many pretreatment methods are available such as physical, chemical, physicochemical, and biological methods.
