March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: brushless DC motor drive, electromagnetic interference suppression, extension theory, microcontroller, power factor corrector, refrigerated cabinet, voltage space vector modulation
The purpose of this study is to develop a variable frequency brushless DC motor drive for the compressors of refrigerated cabinets. It is based on the microcontroller unit (MCU) produced by Renesas Co., Ltd. using the space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) for the modulation of the inverter. In addition, at the AC power supply side of the inverter developed, a circuit for suppressing electromagnetic interference (EMI) and a power factor corrector (PFC) are integrated to control the power factor (PF) at the AC power supply side to be above 0.95, which is far better than the commercially available inverters with a power factor of only 0.5. Finally, an intelligent variable frequency control approach based on the extension theory is designed to classify the rotational speed difference and the rate of change in rotational speed difference between the rotational speed commands and the actual rotational speed of the compressor into 20 zones. Then, for the rotational speed difference and... [more]

Keywords: anomaly detection, cyber-physical systems, cyber-security, dynamic control centers, network intrusion detection, phasor measurement units
The dynamic operation of power transmission systems requires the acquisition of reliable and accurate measurement and state information. The use of TCP/IP-based communication protocols such as IEEE C37.118 or IEC 61850 introduces different gateways to launch cyber-attacks and to compromise major system operation functionalities. Within this study, a combined network intrusion and phasor data anomaly detection system is proposed to enable a secure system operation in the presence of cyber-attacks for dynamic control centers. This includes the utilization of expert-rules, one-class classifiers, as well as recurrent neural networks to monitor different network packet and measurement information. The effectiveness of the proposed network intrusion and phasor data anomaly detection system is shown within a real-time simulation testbed considering multiple operation and cyber-attack conditions.

Keywords: disturbance adaption, five-phase fault-tolerant permanent magnet motor (FTPMSM), modified reduced-order coordinate transformation matrices, open-circuit fault, steady-healthy controller
To ensure the high-quality output performance of the five-phase fault-tolerant permanent magnet synchronous motor (FTPMSM) drive system under normal and open-circuit faults and achieve the minimal reconfiguration of the FTPMSM control drive system under various open-circuit faults, in this paper, a fault-tolerant field-oriented control (FOC) strategy based on disturbance adaption is proposed. The speed-loop and current-loop steady-healthy controllers are designed to effectively suppress the torque ripples caused by open-circuit faults and improve the robustness of the drive system to load disturbance and motor parameter variation under fault operation. Moreover, the additional zero-sequence current controller can be omitted. In addition, the modified reduced-order coordinate transformation matrices are proposed to weaken the influence of oscillating neutral. Finally, the fault-tolerant FOC system of the FTPMSM is established, and its experiment is conducted. The experimental results ve... [more]

Ashraf Khalil, Dina Shona Laila
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: delay margin, delay-dependent stability margin, load frequency control (LFC), power systems stability
In traditional power systems, a dedicated communication channel is utilized to transfer the frequency measurements. With the deregulation and reconstruction of power systems, the information is sent through a shared communication network that makes time delays unavoidable in load frequency control (LFC) systems. With the existence of time delays, the LFC system becomes a standard time delay system that complicates the stability analysis and controller synthesis. In this paper, we present a new approach for analyzing the stability and determining the delay margin of the LFC system. By introducing a new variable, the transcendental equation is converted to nonlinear equations. To find the crossing frequencies, the nonlinear equations are solved, which is simpler than solving a set of linear matrix inequalities. A single-area and a multi-area LFC system are selected as case studies. The new method accurately determines the delay margin of the LFC system with phase and gain margin. The eff... [more]

Keywords: aerodynamic performance, blade tip bionic groove, multi-blade centrifugal fan, noise, numerical simulation
To improve the aerodynamic performance and reduce the noise of multi-blade centrifugal fans used in air conditioners, a bionic groove structure was introduced into the blade tip design, inspired by the drag reduction characteristics of mantis shrimp. In this paper, the numerical method was used to investigate the effects of a blade tip bionic groove on the aerodynamic performance and noise characteristics of a multi-blade centrifugal fan. Firstly, the basic design parameters, such as groove width, groove depth, groove center distance, and groove number, were selected to define the shape of the blade tip bionic groove. Then, the effect of the design parameters on the aerodynamic performance of the multi-blade centrifugal fan was studied. Finally, the multi-blade centrifugal fan models with different groove shapes, such as rectangular bionic grooves, circular bionic grooves, and triangular bionic grooves, were established to compare the influence of blade tip groove structures on the aer... March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: floating capacitor voltage estimation, nine-level inverter, one-dimensional space vector modulation, voltage balancing control
To reduce the device number per unit level of the existing nine-level inverters, a topology of single-phase transformerless nine-level inverter was proposed. The proposed topology consists of only 10 switching devices and 4 capacitors. Firstly, the working principle of the proposed topology was analyzed in detail, and the comparison with conventional nine-level topologies in terms of device switching loss and conduction loss was presented. Then, combined with one-dimensional space vector modulation, a floating capacitor voltage estimation method was presented by the analysis of the operation mode before the arrival of redundant switching state. On this basis, a floating capacitor voltage sensorless control scheme was proposed, to achieve the balance of the floating capacitor voltages. Finally, simulations and experiments verified the effectiveness and correctness of the proposed topology and floating capacitor voltage sensorless control method.

To move the world toward a more sustainable energy future, it is crucial to use the limited hydrocarbon geological resources efficiently and to develop technologies that facilitate this. More rational management of petroleum reservoirs and underground gas storage can be obtained by optimizing well control. This paper presents a novel approach to optimal well control based on the combination of optimal control theory, innovative artificial intelligence methods, and numerical reservoir simulations. Keywords: fault-tolerant control, field-oriented control, five-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor, open-circuited fault, pentagon and pentacle connections
Fault-tolerant control (FTC) of a star-connected Five-phase Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (5Φ-PMSM) under open-circuit faults has been extensively studied, among which the decoupled control is attractive and finds a broad application in many fields. Pentacle- and pentagon-connected (generally known as “Penta-connected”) 5Φ-PMSMs are popular due to their low voltage and high-power density, and especially, the demanded DC voltage level for the pentacle-connection mode accounting for merely 1/1.9021 of the star-connection mode, which is very appealing today. On the other hand, as one of the recent advances, the fault-tolerant decoupling control for penta-connections is still yet to be reviewed, and so this study investigates this issue and attempts to find the similarities and dissimilarities between star- and penta-connections under either single-line or single-phase open faults. Torque behavior analysis under, respectively, the fault-tolerant MPPT and id = 0 is conducted to confirm... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: auto-ignition, initial flame kernel, oblique shock, recirculating region, supersonic flow
The auto-ignition caused by oblique shocks was investigated experimentally in a supersonic flow regime, with the incoming flow at a Mach number of 2.5. The transient characteristics of the auto-ignition caused by shock evolvements were recorded with a schlieren photography system, and the initial flame kernel generation and subsequent propagation were recorded using a high-speed camera. The fuel mixing characteristics were captured using NPLS (nanoparticle-based planar laser scattering method). This work aimed to reveal the flame spread mechanism in a supersonic flow regime. The effects of airflow total temperature, fuel injection pressure, and cavity length in the process of auto-ignition and on the auto-ignitable boundary were investigated and analyzed. From this work, it was found that the initial occurrence of auto-ignition is first induced by oblique shocks and then propagated upstream to the recirculation region, to establish a sustained flame. The auto-ignition performance can b... [more]

Keywords: 4-leg CVCF inverter, off-grid micro-grid system, single-phase power control, single-phase voltage control, unbalanced load
In general, severe load imbalances in small AC micro-grid systems can degrade their operational performance and their maintenance. This is because the unbalanced load in the micro-grid affects the energy flow and the voltage regulation functions of each phase. In order to solve the voltage imbalance problem, several algorithms for the 3-phase 4-leg CVCF inverter have been proposed, but the control algorithms are not enough to operate the 4-leg CVCF inverter in a stable manner. Therefore, this paper proposes a single-phase voltage and power control algorithm for the 3-phase 4-leg CVCF inverter based on a dq control in order to improve the voltage imbalance problem caused by a severely unbalanced load, where the single phase voltage control algorithm is composed of an αβ-dq and a dq-αβ transformer, a voltage and a current controller, and an off-set controller and a PWM, and the single-phase power control algorithm is also composed of an αβ-dq and a dq-αβ transformer, an active/reactive p... Keywords: CNN, fault diagnosis, high-speed bearing, noise immunity, offshore wind turbine, RF
The vibration signals for offshore wind-turbine high-speed bearings are often contaminated with noises due to complex environmental and structural loads, which increase the difficulty of fault detection and diagnosis. In view of this problem, we propose a fault-diagnosis strategy with good noise immunity in this paper by integrating the two-dimensional convolutional neural network (2DCNN) with random forest (RF), which is supposed to utilize both CNN’s automatic feature-extraction capability and the robust discrimination performance of RF classifiers. More specifically, the raw 1D time-domain bearing-vibration signals are transformed into 2D grayscale images at first, which are then fed to the 2DCNN-RF model for fault diagnosis. At the same time, three procedures, including exponential linear unit (ELU), batch normalization (BN), and dropout, are introduced in the model to improve feature-extraction performance and the noise immune capability. In addition, when the 2DCNN feature extrac... [more]

Keywords: biomass blends, combustion, microwave pre-treatment, thermal decomposition
In the present study analysis of co-firing microwave (MW) pre-treated biomass pellets of different origins (wood and wheat straw), with raw pellets (wood, straw, and peat), to control and improve thermochemical conversion of biomass blends and achieve a sustainable use of local energy resources in energy production has been carried out. Effects of MW pre-treatment regimes and composition of blends were studied experimentally using measurements of the weight loss of blends, the yield of volatiles, flame temperature, total heat output from the device, and composition of products. It was found that co-firing MW pre-treated and raw biomass pellets promotes synergistic interaction between components of blends by increasing mass loss rate, the intensity of which depends on the proximate composition of pellets, MW pre-treatment regime and mass fraction of pre-treated pellets in the blend. The most effective synergistic interaction was found when co-firing pre-treated straw or wood pellets wit... [more]

Keywords: control, heat transfer fluid, linear fresnel reflector, Modelling
The modelling of Linear Fresnel Collectors (LFCs) is crucial in order to predict accurate performance for annual yields and to define proper commands to design the suitable controller. The ISO 9806 modelling, applied to thermal collectors, presents some gaps especially with concentration collectors including LFCs notably due to the factorisation of the incidence angle modifiers and the fact that they are considered symmetric around the south meridian. The present work details the use of two alternative modellings methodologies based on recorded experimental data on the solar system installed at the Cyprus Institute, in the outskirts of Nicosia, Cyprus. The first modelling is the RealTrackEff, which is an improved ISO9806 modelling, and the second is constructed using the CARNOT blockset in MATLAB/Simulink. Both models include all the elements of the heat transfer fluid loop, i.e., mineral oil, with a tank and a heat-exchanger. First, the open loop’s studies demonstrated that the root m... [more]

This study presents an application for a series VSC (voltage source converter) in distribution grids for power flow management. Series devices have been widely studied for FACTS (flexible AC transmission systems), however, more recently these devices have gained increased interest in applications for loading balance in medium voltage distribution grids. As the number of distributed generation (DG) units increases, increasing the capacity and reliability of distribution grids while maximizing the benefits of installed DGs and loading behavior is an ever more important task. In this paper, we describe a test system and control proposals for a practical application of series converters interconnecting two distribution feeders at 13.8 kV under load variation disturbances. This approach provides solutions when installed at the end of distribution lines by interconnecting two feeders, resulting in capacity increases in the feeders without needing grid reconfigurations using a small-rated ser... Keywords: cooperative controller, fuzzy control, generalized predictive control, heat management, reformer, solid oxide fuel cell
Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) have complex characteristics, including a long time delay, strong thermoelectrical coupling, and multiple constraints. This leads to multiple control objectives, such as efficiently controlling the power output of the stack and considering the temperature constraints of multiple high-temperature components. Dealing with multiple objectives at the same time brings challenges to the design of SOFC system control. Based on the verified high-precision system model and aiming to achieve fast response, high efficiency, and thermal management, this paper first designs a generalized predictive controller (GPC) to realize the global optimization of the system. Then, through the actual test of the individual reformer, the reformer characteristics are analyzed, the standby controller to control the reformer temperature is designed, and the thermoelectric cooperative controller is constricted with the GPC. The results show that while fast power tracking, high efficie... [more]

Keywords: DC–DC converter, pulse width modulation, switched inductor boost regulator, voltage-to-time converter
This paper presents a switched inductor (SI) DC−DC boost regulator designed for thermoelectric generator (TEG) applications. To boost and regulate the output voltage, two feedback loops are implemented which control the duty cycle of the SI clock. The first loop consists of a pulse skip modulation (PSM) controller that compares the load voltage and reference voltage. Based on the comparison output, the PSM will either pass or bypass the modulated pulse width signal generated from the second loop. The second loop replaces the conventional circuit design of the pulse width modulation (PWM) with a voltage-to-time converter (VTC). The VTC converts the difference between load and supply voltage to time delay resulting in a modulated pulse width. This work is the first to report on utilizing VTC circuit in the SI boost regulator. The proposed SI boost regulator is designed using 65 nm CMOS technology which converts the TEG voltage of 50 mV to support dynamic voltage scaling in the range of 0... [more]

Keywords: compressor, corner separation, end wall contouring, flow control, optimization design
To deal with corner separation in high-load axial compressors, this paper proposes a new end wall contouring method aimed at controlling the end wall secondary flow in more than one local area, generating a geometry with fewer control variables that is applicable for multiple working conditions. The new method defines more than one surface unit function, with different effects on end wall secondary flow. Then, the geometry of these surface unit functions will be superposed to generate the end wall contouring, to combine their flow control effects. After applying the new method to a bi-objective optimization design process, with 15 design variables aimed at minimizing the loss of cascade at 0° and 4° incidence, the optimal design reduces the total pressure loss of the high-load cascade by 5% under the former incidence and by 3% under the latter. The most effective design rule is constructing an end wall surface with the rising suction side and sinking pressure side in the blade channel,... [more]

In recent years, induction heating applications assisted by electronic power control have been very appealing. For melting applications, induction heating is widely used as it seems to be appropriate and provides higher efficiency, zero pollutants, non-contamination of material, etc. in comparison with conventional heating. The conventional variable frequency control scheme is not sufficient for melting applications because of its high switching loss, low efficiency, and lower heat rate. A superlative control technique is required to control the output power smoothly, for a high heating rate with minimum power loss, and to lower the number of components. In this paper, a capacitorless self-resonating bifilar coil is proposed for induction surface melting applications. The performance of the system in terms of modular losses, heat rate, and efficiency is analyzed for various power methods such as pulse duty cycle control, phase shift control, pulse density modulation control, and asymme... Keywords: double-axis tracking, rigid body motion, solar dish concentrator system, tilt error, tracking error
A solar dish concentrator system has a large windward area and heavy structural mass, and under the action of wind loads and self-weight loads, foundation settlement can easily occur and cause the column (the azimuth axis) to tilt. Upon tilting, the azimuth axis is no longer perpendicular to the horizontal plane, causing a tracking error in the service of the solar dish concentrator system. In this paper, a tracking error model of a solar dish concentrator system is established based on the rigid body motion theory, which considers the azimuth axis tilt error. In this model, a radial angle and tangential angle parameters are used to describe the azimuth axis’s tilt angle and tilt direction. Under the tilt error of the azimuth axis, we analyze, in detail, the initial tracking position of a solar dish concentrator system, the system operation area, and the variation rule of tracking performance in long-term operation. The results show that under the azimuth axis tilt error of the solar d... [more]

The necessity of increasing the efficiency of primary oil purification in a drilling station or an offshore platform has been substantiated. We consider the problems that arise during the primary processing of oil mixtures. Important conditions for increasing the efficiency of primary purification (separation) of oil mixtures include measuring the consumption and determining the content of various impurities (water, undissolved particles) and air in them, with an error of no more than 2%. We analyzed the possibilities of using various designs of flowmeters to measure the consumption of the oil mixture coming from a well. It is also necessary to use other measuring instruments to control the state of this mixture, which creates additional problems (searching for an appropriate locations to place them, providing the required operating conditions). Various designs of nuclear magnetic flowmeters−relaxometers were considered, making it possible to measure the consumption of a liquid medium... [more]

Keywords: fuzzy set theory, hazard, Hydrogen, regulation, rules, safety, shipping, storage
Shipping accounts for about 3% of global CO2 emissions. In order to achieve the target set by the Paris Agreement, IMO introduced their GHG strategy. This strategy envisages 50% emission reduction from international shipping by 2050, compared with 2008. This target cannot be fulfilled if conventional fuels are used. Amongst others, hydrogen is considered to be one of the strong candidates as a zero-emissions fuel. Yet, concerns around the safety of its storage and usage have been formulated and need to be addressed. “Safety”, in this article, is defined as the control of recognized hazards to achieve an acceptable level of risk. This article aims to propose a new way of comparing two systems with regard to their safety. Since safety cannot be directly measured, fuzzy set theory is used to compare linguistic terms such as “safer”. This method is proposed to be used during the alternative design approach. This approach is necessary for deviations from IMO rules, for example, when hydroge... [more]

Keywords: faults detection, faults location, instantaneous reactive power, inter-turn short-circuit, second harmonic
Reliable stator winding faults diagnosis is important for machine drives. This work presents an inter-turn short-circuit (ITSC) winding faults detection method for permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs), based on the percentage of the second harmonics in phase instantaneous reactive powers (IRPs), defined in the abc frame of reference. In particular, the proposed indicator can locate the phase with ITSC for the PMSM with neutral conductor. The feature of ITSC in phase IRP is analyzed theoretically first, and a simulation setup is established in MATLAB/Simulink using the faulty PMSM model widely used for ITSC detection. From the theoretical analysis and the simulations, the second harmonic in phase IRP is proven to be the characteristic feature for fault detection. Simulations at different operating conditions show that the percentage of the second harmonic to its dc component in phase IRP, which is the proposed indicator in this article, is more reliable than the second harmonic a... Keywords: demagnetization, Fault Detection, generators, permanent magnet synchronous machines
A new method for detecting demagnetization faults in axial flux permanent magnet synchronous wind generators is presented in this study. Demagnetization faults occur in the case of total or partial loss of the magnetic properties of one or more permanent magnets of the machine. Fault signatures appearing in the current or voltage signal due to a demagnetization fault can often be confused with those produced by eccentricity faults, making the discrimination between the two types of faults difficult. The proposed methodology is based on the analysis of the instant power spectrum of the generator, combined with an estimator to derive the permanent magnet flux, based on the machine equations. Short-Time Fourier Transform is proposed as the means for spectrum analysis to ensure performance during variations of the generator speed. Results derived from the experimental tests are presented, which show that the proposed methodology is capable of detecting demagnetization faults and distinguis... [more]
