Fuzzy Bang-Bang Relay Control of a Rigid Rotor Supported by Active Magnetic Bearings
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: active magnetic bearings, bang-bang control, fuzzy logic, nonlinear control, rotor dynamics
Active magnetic bearings, which are open-loop and unstable, require a feedback control system to ensure stable operation of the rotating machines that they support. Proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers are widely used in field applications of these bearings for this purpose. PID controllers are designed to work effectively within the linear region of operation of the rotating machines. Due to the inherent nonlinearity of the active magnetic bearings, large unbalance forces that may occur in these machines result in nonlinear vibration responses. Therefore, the PID controller’s effectiveness to control the vibration of the rotating machines is considerably reduced when the unbalance forces in these machines become large. Other control strategies, such as the fuzzy logic and the sliding mode control schemes, are more apt to deal with the nonlinear responses of the rotating machines supported by active magnetic bearings. The present work proposes an integrated fuzzy bang-ban... [more]

A Photovoltaic System Fault Identification Method Based on Improved Deep Residual Shrinkage Networks
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: current-voltage curves, deep residual shrinkage networks, fault diagnosis, photovoltaic (PV) power system
With the increasing installed capacity of photovoltaic (PV) power generation, it has become a significant challenge to detect abnormalities and faults of PV modules in a timely manner. Considering that all the fault information of the PV module is contained in the current-voltage (I-V) curve, this pioneering study takes the I-V curve as the input and proposes a PV-fault identification method based on improved deep residual shrinkage networks (DRSN). This method can not only identify single faults (e.g., short-circuit, partial-shading, and abnormal aging), but also effectively identify the simultaneous existence of hybrid faults. Moreover, it can achieve end-to-end fault diagnosis. The diagnostic accuracy of the proposed method on the measured data reaches 97.73%, is better than the convolutional neural network (CNN), the support vector machine (SVM), the deep residual network (ResNet), and the stage-wise additive modeling using multi-class exponential loss function based on the classif... Subject: Process Control
Keywords: acoustic, data-driven, Fault Detection, rotor, UAV
With the rising popularity of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and increasing variety of their applications, the task of providing reliable and robust control systems becomes significant. An active fault-tolerant control (FTC) scheme requires an effective fault detection and isolation (FDI) algorithm to provide information about the fault’s occurrence and its location. This work aims to present a prototype of a diagnostic system intended to recognize and identify broken blades of rotary wing UAVs. The solution is based on an analysis of acoustic emission recorded with an onboard microphone array paired with a lightweight yet powerful single-board computer. The standalone hardware of the FDI system was utilized to collect a wide and publicly available dataset of recordings in real-world experiments. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: current harmonic suppression, deadbeat predictive control (DPC), interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM), multiple synchronous rotating frame transformation (MSRFT)
When the interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) is running, there are abundant harmonics in the stator current. Exploring the Impact of Parallel Architecture on Improving Adaptable Neuro-Fuzzy Inference Systems for Gas-Insulated Switch Defect Recognition
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: adaptive class neuro-fuzzy inference systems, gas-insulated switches, partial discharge
Gas-insulated switchgear malfunctions during power system operation may occur due to electrical, thermal, or human errors in the manufacturing process. The leading causes of insulation deterioration of gas-insulated switchgear are discharging along the surface caused by dirt on the insulating material, internal discharge caused by impurities and cavities in the insulating material, corona discharge caused by poor assembly or construction at the site, and electric tree channel discharge caused by the intense internal discharge. Since different defects produce different partial discharge characteristics, the operating power equipment can be analyzed using measurement instruments to detect partial discharge for preventive equipment fault diagnosis, avoiding unnecessary power outages and losses; therefore, evaluating the defects in gas-insulated switchgear is essential. In this study, three gas-insulated switchgears were prefabricated with different defects before encapsulation, and the pa... [more]

The Optimal Diameter of the Droplets of a High-Viscosity Liquid Containing Solid State Catalyst Particles
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: catalyst, combustion, control, dust duct, optimal droplet diameter
The article presents a method of controlling the size of droplets generated by a system that sprays a high-viscosity liquid containing particles of a solid body, i.e., a catalyst. The work is a continuation of previous research concerning the spraying of liquids with a catalyst, which improves the efficiency of the process. As a result of the conducted CFD calculations, it was found that to bring the catalyst to the system, a droplet with a diameter of at least 30 µm should be generated. The tests were carried out on a laboratory scale on a model isopropanol-water system. A polymer containing Raney nickel particles was added to the suspension. The analysis of the obtained data confirmed the possibility of generating droplets with the desired diameters in order for the liquid carrying the catalyst to not evaporate before it is delivered to the combustion chamber. The designed and constructed test system allows the diameters of the generated droplets to be controlled by changing the sett... [more]

Thermal switches contribute to efficient and safe thermal management of components and overall systems in various technical applications by actively controlling heat transfer in response to varying thermal loads and ambient conditions. Heat pipes are passive heat transfer devices constituting an integral part of various thermal management systems such as in spacecraft or consumer electronics thermal control. Heat pipes also form a promising approach for thermal switches due to their high effective thermal conductivity. In this paper, a wickless copper-water heat pipe based thermal switch with an electromagnetic linear actuator is presented. The magnetically actuated motion of a plunger integrated into the heat pipe affects the latent heat transport cycle leading to a switchable heat transfer. February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: copper consumption, DTP-PMSM, fault tolerant, model prediction
Aiming at the open circuit fault of a dual three-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor, a normalized current method is used for open circuit fault diagnosis. Then, a fault-tolerant control strategy for reducing the harmonic distortion of a dual three-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor is proposed, which is based on current model prediction control and keeps the decoupling transformation matrix unchanged. The fault-tolerant control method based on current model prediction considers the influence of the control quantity on the future state of the system, and effectively reduces the total harmonic distortion. Two fault-tolerant control strategies for the motor are analyzed, with minimizing stator copper consumption and maximizing torque output as control objectives. Through simulation and experiment of fault-tolerant control strategies for a dual three-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor, the results verify the effectiveness and feasibility of the strategy.

Keywords: dual-active-bridge converter, minimum reactive power, phase shift modulation, series resonance, zero voltage switching (ZVS)
In order to meet the demands of the bidirectional transmission of electric vehicle charger power, a series-resonant dual-active-bridge (DAB) converter is investigated in this paper. Firstly, the active and reactive power and zero voltage switching (ZVS) conditions of the full-bridge arm under extended phase-shift modulation, dual phase-shift modulation and triple phase-shift modulation are analyzed. Secondly, with the minimum reactive power as the optimization objective, the extended phase shift (EPS) is finally selected as the modulation method after comparing the minimum reactive power under various modulation methods when the normalized value of active power is varied in the range of 0−1. By constructing the objective function and determining the constraints, an off-line reactive power−minimization control strategy is proposed to achieve the ZVS of the full-bridge arm and, finally, the feasibility of the proposed control strategy is verified by simulation and experiment.

High-Performance Fractional Order PIMR-Type Repetitive Control for a Grid-Tied Inverter
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: finite impulse response, fractional phase-lead compensation, grid-tied inverter, low phase resolution, PIMR-type RC
Low switching frequency is usually used in high-power wind grid-tied inverter systems to reduce power loss caused by on−off switching activity. Proportional integral multi-resonant type repetitive control (PIMR-type RC) can track reference grid current signals and suppress harmonic signals of grid-tied inverter system. A low switching frequency will result in a low sampling rate of control system. However, integer-order phase-lead compensation will lead to a poor compensation accuracy of PIMR-type RC with a low sampling rate, leading to poor tracking and suppressing performance of PIMR-type RC, and even result in system instability. To solve these problems, a high-performance fractional-order phase-lead compensation PIMR-type RC (FO-PIMR-RC) scheme is proposed in this paper. Fractional-order phase-lead compensation is adopted to compensate accurately the phase lag caused by controlled plant and PIMR-type RC and approximately realized by a finite impulse response (FIR) filter. E-mobility is an emerging means of transportation, mainly due to the environmental impact of petroleum-based fuel vehicles and oil prices’ peak. However, electric vehicles face several challenges by the nature of technology. Consequently, electric vehicles have a limited travel range and are extremely heavy. In this research, an investigation is carried out on different measures to reduce the DC-link capacitor size in the drive train of an electric vehicle. Backward Step-Up Control Strategy for Bidirectional LLC Resonant Converter
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: backward step-up mode, control strategy, LLC resonant converter, synchronous rectification, voltage gain
An LLC resonant converter has the advantages of simple structure and soft switching. It can enable bidirectional power transmission, but it is difficult to realize a normalized gain greater than one under backward mode (backward step-up mode). Cascaded dc/dc converters or topological changes can solve this problem, but additional switches and components are required and losses are added. Without changing the LLC resonant converter’s basic topology, this paper proposes a variable duty-cycle control strategy of primary side switches for backward step-up mode. Using variable duty-cycle control, the LC resonant tank can be charged, and then the backward step-up mode can be realized. Soft switching characteristics of some primary side switches and all secondary side switches are guaranteed. In this study, the working principle of an LLC resonant converter under bidirectional control strategy was analyzed, and the backward step-up control was analyzed in detail. The current state-of-the-art voltage control is based on static/pre-determined DER volt-var curves. Static volt-var curves do not provide sufficient flexibility to address the temporal and spatial aspects of the voltage control problem in a power system with a large number of DER. This paper presents a simple, scalable, and robust distributed optimization framework (DOF) for optimizing voltage control. The proposed framework allows for data-driven distributed voltage optimization in a power distribution system. This method enhances voltage control by optimizing volt-var curve parameters of inverters in a distributed manner based on a cellular computational network (CCN) representation of the power distribution system. The cellular optimization approach enables the system-wide optimization. The cells to be optimized may be prioriti... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: current source inverter, harmonic current suppression, impulse current PWM technique, multi-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor
Among the existing harmonic current suppression methods, it is difficult and complicated to suppress any nth harmonic current accurately for multi-phase permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs). To solve this problem, this paper takes a five-phase dual-rotor PMSM fed with a current source inverter (CSI) as an example, and proposes an nth harmonic current suppression method based on the impulse current PWM algorithm. On the Use of the Disability-Adjusted Life Year (DALY) Estimator as a Metric to Optimally Manage ICE Emissions
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: CVT powertrains, DALY, emissions optimal control, minimum health damage strategy, unified emissions evaluation
We propose a new management strategy for engines equipped with automatic transmissions based on the damage to human health caused by emissions. The damage to human health is quantified by the years of life lost in a population due to disability or early death caused by exposure to pollutants. Various engine emissions share a common factor: damage to human health. Our strategy aims to keep engines running along the line of minimum damage instead of focusing on minimal fuel consumption. We applied the minimum damage strategy to the powertrain of a light vehicle to evaluate its effectiveness. In this work, we discuss this strategy’s effects on continuous variable transmission and seven gears automatic transmission and compare the classic minimum fuel consumption strategy to the minimum damage strategy. The latter results in a 50% reduction in damage compared with the minimum consumption strategy at the expense of an 8% increase in fuel consumption.

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: control, linear systems with variable parameters, non-stationary digital filters, periodic systems
This paper is a study on the synthesis of digital filters used to control active or self-excited systems. The active two-terminal branch implements a nonconvolution-type immittance operator, which generates a current waveform depending on the given impedance or admittance operator. In this article, for the first time, the method of how to construct immittance operators for linear time-variant (nonconvolution-type) two-terminal circuits, over discrete time, is presented. These operators are useful when calculating periodic steady-state signals of a parametric circuit. The formula for the duty cycle is derived based on the current generated by this branch, assuming a known branch voltage or vice versa. This formula allows us to make a direct calculation of the duty-cycle in an analytical manner and does not refer to any auxiliary signals, e.g., sawtooth signals, or to any control systems, e.g., PI controller. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: anomaly detection, condition monitoring, condition-based maintenance, fault diagnosis, main bearing, one-class support vector machine, predictive maintenance, SCADA data, wind turbine
To reduce the levelized cost of wind energy, through the reduction in operation and maintenance costs, it is imperative that the wind turbine downtime is reduced through maintenance strategies based on condition monitoring. The standard approach toward this challenge is based on vibration monitoring, which requires the installation of specific tailored sensors that incur associated added costs. On the other hand, the life expectancy of wind parks built during the 1990s wind power boom is dwindling, and data-driven maintenance strategies issued from already accessible supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) data is an auspicious competitive solution because no additional sensors are required. Note that it is a major issue to provide fault diagnosis approaches built only on SCADA data, as these data were not established with the objective of being used for condition monitoring but rather for control capacities. In this work, a fuzzy intelligent inductor−capacitor−inductor hybrid power filter is designed to reduce harmonics in the distribution line. Since the nature of proportional integral control is only efficient with linear variations and the real condition of the distribution system is always varying nonlinearly, to create a minimum steady error, fuzzy-tuned proportional integral control is designed to intelligently consider the input changes and revise the decision rules using fuzzy reasoning. The content of the harmonic current with respect to the varying load is momentarily commutated. Thus, using Clarke’s transformation, the errors are summed with insta... [more]
