Influence of Controller’s Parameters on Static Bifurcation of Magnetic-Liquid Double Suspension Bearing
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: attraction basin, magnetic-liquid double suspension bearing, parameter controller, phase path, static bifurcation
Magnetic-Liquid Double Suspension Bearing (MLDSB) is composed of an electromagnetic supporting and a hydrostatic supporting system. Due to greater supporting capacity and static stiffness, it is appropriate for occasions of middle speed, overloading, and frequent starting. Because of the complicated structure of the supporting system, the probability and degree of static bifurcation of MLDSB can be increased by the coupling of hydrostatic force and electromagnetism force, and then the supporting capacity and operation stability are reduced. As the key part of MLDSB, the controller makes an important impact on its supporting capacity, operation stability, and reliability. Firstly, the mathematical model of MLDSB is established in the paper. Secondly, the static bifurcation point of MLDSB is determined, and the influence of parameters of the controller on singular point characteristics is analyzed. Finally, the influence of parameters of the controller on phase trajectories and basin of... [more]

Design of Static Output Feedback and Structured Controllers for Active Suspension with Quarter-Car Model
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: 2-DOF quarter-car model, 7-DOF full-car model, active suspension control, linear quadratic regulator, LQ static output feedback control, LQG
This paper presents a method to design active suspension controllers for a 7-Degree-of-Freedom (DOF) full-car (FC) model from controllers designed with a 2-DOF quarter-car (QC) one. A linear quadratic regulator (LQR) with 7-DOF FC model has been widely used for active suspension control. However, it is too hard to implement the LQR in real vehicles because it requires so many state variables to be precisely measured and has so many elements to be implemented in the gain matrix of the LQR. To cope with the problem, a 2-DOF QC model describing vertical motions of sprung and unsprung masses is adopted for controller design. LQR designed with the QC model has a simpler structure and much smaller number of gain elements than that designed with the FC one. In this paper, several controllers for the FC model are derived from LQR designed with the QC model. These controllers can give equivalent or better performance than that designed with the FC model in terms of ride comfort. In order to use... [more]

Model-Based Control System Design of Brushless Doubly Fed Reluctance Machines Using an Unscented Kalman Filter
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: control system design, electrical drives, electrical machines, model-based control, reluctance drives, Unscented Kalman Filter
The Brushless Doubly Fed Reluctance Machine (BDFRM) is an emerging alternative for variable speed drive systems, providing a significant downsizing of the power electronics converter. This paper proposes a new view on the machine equations, allowing the reuse of the standard control system design for conventional synchronous and asynchronous machines: a cascade control system with an inner current control- and outer speed control loop. The assumptions and simplifications made on the machine model allow for a simple, model-based approach to set the controller gains in a brushless doubly fed machine drive system. The cascade control scheme is combined with an Unscented Kalman Filter as a state observer, capable of estimating the load torque and losses. The performance of the proposed control system design is checked in simulation and tested in real-time on a low power BDFRM prototype.

Analysis Performance of SRM Based on the Novel Dependent Torque Control Method
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: dependent torque control, Switched Reluctance Motor, torque ripple minimization
This paper presents a description and the results of simulations and laboratory tests of proposed methods for dependent torque control in a Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM). The proposed methods are based on Dependent Torque Motor Control (Rising Slope), DTMC(RC), and Dependent Torque Motor Control (Falling Slope), DTMC(FC). The results of these studies were compared with those on the Classical Torque Motor Control (CTMC) method. Studies were conducted for each of the analyzed control methods by determining the efficiency of the drive and the RMS of the source current and analyzing the vibrations generated for each of the control methods. The harmonics of the phase currents, which caused an increase in the level of vibrations generated, were determined. The usefulness of the proposed methods for controlling SRMs was assessed based on simulations and experiments. Additionally, the natural frequencies of the stator of the tested SRM were determined by a simulation using the Ansys Maxwell... [more]

Fuzzy Logic Based Synchronization Method for Solar Powered High Frequency On-Board Grid
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: fuzzy logic, high frequency grid, on-board grid, synchronization
This paper proposes a method for synchronizing a grid inverter with the voltage of an on-board high-frequency power grid. The described synchronization method belongs to the adaptive methods, which use fuzzy logic in the process of estimating the fundamental component of the voltage. The synchronization system has been tuned to achieve the primary goal of achieving synchronization in the shortest possible time. This is to allow for the efficient energy fed from photovoltaic sources into the on-board grid at 400 Hz. The proposed method was implemented in the field programmable gate array (FPGA) based power converter controller and static and dynamic tests for harmonic, interharmonic and subharmonic voltage disturbances were performed. Dynamic tests for phase jump, frequency jump and sag of the on-board voltage were also performed. To evaluate the effectiveness of synchronization with high-frequency voltage, the grid current control system in the grid tied inverter was elaborated. Proper... [more]

Extending DC Bus Utilization for Induction Motors with Stator Flux Oriented Direct Torque Control
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: direct field-oriented control, direct torque control, overmodulation, stator flux estimation, stator flux orientation
This paper presents a method to extend the DC bus utilization on an induction motor (IM) by using a combination of Space-Vector Modulated Direct Torque Control (DTC−SVM) and conventional DTC. The scheme proposed in this paper exploits the advantages of both control methods. During the linear region, it allows for a low torque ripple and low current harmonic distortion (THD). During the overmodulation region, it allows for the fastest torque response up to the six-step operation region. In both regions, there is complete independence of the motor parameters. The paper describes a way to provide a smooth transition between the two control schemes. Non-linearities affect the stator flux angle estimation, which leads to the inability to decouple torque and flux. To overcome this problem, a novel PI-based control scheme as well as a simplification on the decoupling terms’ calculation are proposed. Simulation and experimental results are presented to verify the feasibility of the proposed me... [more]

Mixed H2/H∞ Optimal Voltage Control Design for Smart Transformer Low-Voltage Inverter
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: H∞ control, inverter control, linear matrix inequality (LMI), linear quadratic (LQ) index, poles placement
The smart transformer has been widely applied for the integration of renewables and loads. For the smart transformer application, the voltage control of low-voltage inverter is important for feeding the load. In this paper, a multi-objective optimization control design approach which comprehensively considers all aspects of indexes, such as linear quadratic (LQ) index, H∞ norm, and closed-loop poles placement, is proposed based on the linear matrix inequality (LMI) solution. The proposed approach is able to alleviate the weight of the designer from the tedious design process of the multiple resonant controllers and the selection of the weighting matrix for the LQ control. Besides that, some excellent performances such as fast recovering time, low total harmonic distortion (THD) and high robustness are achieved by the proposed approach. The THD are 0.5% and 1.7% for linear and non-linear loads, respectively. The voltage drop for linear load step is reduced to 10 V. The proposed approach... [more]

Open-Circuit Fault-Tolerant Strategy for Interleaved Boost Converters via Filippov Method
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: eigenvalues, fault-tolerant strategy, interleaved converters, monodromy matrix, open-circuit, slope compensation
Interleaved converters use an increased number of power electronics switches; this may subsequently affect their reliability. However, this is an opportunity to develop fault-tolerant strategies to improve their reliability and to ensure continuity of service. This is why we herein propose, for the first time, a mathematical function to simultaneously model the healthy and faulty conditions of each switch, thus enabling a unique model of the system. This model is then used in an original fault-tolerant strategy based upon the peak current control with slope compensation. This method not only extends the stable range of the load variation but also ensures the stability in faulty conditions. Finally, the simulation results validate its effectiveness and confirm the theoretical analysis.

Fault Detection and Efficiency Assessment for HVAC Systems Using Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring: A Review
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Energy Efficiency, fault detection and diagnosis, HVAC, non-intrusive load monitoring
Heat, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems are some of the most energy-intensive equipment in buildings and their faulty or inefficient operation can significantly increase energy waste. Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring (NILM), which is a software-based tool, has been a popular research area over the last few decades. NILM can play an important role in providing future energy efficiency feedback and developing fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) tools in smart buildings. Therefore, the review of NILM-based methods for FDD and the energy efficiency (EE) assessment of HVACs can be beneficial for users as well as buildings and facilities operators. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this paper is the first review paper on the application of NILM techniques in these areas and highlights their effectiveness and limitations. This review shows that even though NILM could be successfully implemented for FDD and the EE evaluation of HVACs, and enhance the performance of these techn... [more]

Study on the Influential Factors of CO2 Storage in Low Permeability Reservoir
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Carbon Dioxide, low permeability reservoirs, oil recovery factor, storage capacity
As the demands of tight-oil Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) and the controlling of anthropogenic carbon emission have become global challenges, Carbon Capture Utilization and Sequestration (CCUS) has been recognized as an effective solution to resolve both needs. However, the influential factors of carbon dioxide (CO2) geological storage in low permeability reservoirs have not been fully studied. Based on core samples from the Huang-3 area of the Ordos Basin, the feasibility and influential factors of geological CO2 sequestration in the Huang-3 area are analyzed through caprock breakthrough tests and a CO2 storage factor experiment. The results indicate that capillary trapping is the key mechanism of the sealing effect by the caprock. With the increase of caprock permeability, the breakthrough pressure and pressure difference decreased rapidly. A good exponential relationship between caprock breakthrough pressure and permeability can be summarized. The minimum breakthrough pressure of CO2... [more]

Cascaded H-Bridge Converter Based on Current-Source Inverter with DC Links Magnetically Coupled to Reduce the DC Inductors Value
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: cascaded H-Bridge, current-source inverter, non-linear control, oscillating power compensation
The main drawback of the Cascaded-H Bridge converter based on three-phase/single-phase current-source inverters is the large DC inductors needed to limit the variation of the DC current caused by the single-phase inverter oscillating power. If the oscillating power is somehow compensated, then the DC inductor can be designed just as a function of the semiconductors’ switching frequency, reducing its value. This work explores the use of three-phase/single-phase cells magnetically coupled through their DC links to compensate for the oscillating power among them and, therefore, reduce the DC inductor value. At the same time, front ends controlled by a non-linear control strategy equalize the DC currents among coupled cells to avoid saturating the magnetic core. The effectiveness of the proposal is demonstrated using mathematical analysis and corroborated by computational simulation for a 110 kVA load per phase and experimental tests in a 2 kVA laboratory prototype. The outcomes show that... [more]

Validation of a Method for Measuring the Position of Pick Holders on a Robotically Assisted Mining Machine’s Working Unit
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: calibration, cutting head, measurement system, robotic manufacturing station, segmentation, vision system
For effective mining, it is essential to ensure that the picks are positioned correctly on the working unit of a mining machine. This is due to the fact that the design of roadheader cutting heads/drums using computer-aided tools is based on the operating conditions of the roadheader/shearer/milling machine. The geometry of the cutting head is optimized for selected criteria by simulating the mining process using a computer. The reclaimed cutting head bodies that are utilized in production are manufactured again in the overhaul process. Ensuring that the dimensions of the cutting head bodies match the rated dimensions is labor-intensive and involves high production costs. For dimensional deviations of the cutting head bodies, it is necessary to control the position of the pick holders relative to the cutting head side surface in real time during robotic-assisted assembly. Impact of Hydraulic System Stiffness on Its Energy Losses and Its Efficiency in Positioning Mechanical Systems
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: articulated frame wheeled vehicles, efficiency in positioning, hydraulic system stiffness, minimising energy losses, snaking
Hydraulic steering systems for mechanical devices, for example, manipulators or vehicle steering systems, should be able to achieve high positioning precision with high energy efficiency. However, this condition is very often not met in practical applications. This is usually due to the stiffness of the hydraulic system being too low. As a result, additional corrections are required to achieve the required positioning precision. Unfortunately, this means additional energy losses in the hydraulic control system. In this study, this problem is presented using the example of a hydraulic steering system for an articulated frame steer vehicle. This hydraulic steering system should provide the required directional stability for road traffic safety reasons. So far, this issue, connected mainly with the harmful phenomenon of so-called vehicle snaking behaviour, has not been solved sufficiently practically. PEFC System Reactant Gas Supply Management and Anode Purging Strategy: An Experimental Approach
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: control systems, hydrogen purging, PEFC system, water management
In this report, a 5 kW PEFC system running on dry hydrogen with an appropriately sized Balance of Plant (BoP) was used to conduct experimental studies and analyses of gas supply subsystems. The improper rating and use of BoP components has been found to increase parasitic loads, which consequently has a direct effect on the polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC) system efficiency. Therefore, the minimisation of parasitic loads while maintaining desired performance is crucial. Nevertheless, little has been found in the literature regarding experimental work on large stacks and BoP, with the majority of papers concentrating on modelling. A particular interest of our study was the anode side of the fuel cell. Additionally the rationale behind the use of hydrogen anode recirculation was scrutinised, and a novel anode purging strategy was developed and implemented. Through experimental modelling, the use of cathode air blower was minimised since it was found to be the biggest contributor to t... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: image processing, input-output observable system, model reference control, reinforcement learning and approximate dynamic programming, unknown dynamics, virtual state feedback reference tuning, visual servo
This paper focuses on validating a model-free Value Iteration Reinforcement Learning (MFVI-RL) control solution on a visual servo tracking system in a comprehensive manner starting from theoretical convergence analysis to detailed hardware and software implementation. Learning is based on a virtual state representation reconstructed from input-output (I/O) system samples under nonlinear observability and unknown dynamics assumptions, while the goal is to ensure linear output reference model (ORM) tracking. Secondary, a competitive model-free Virtual State-Feedback Reference Tuning (VSFRT) is learned from the same I/O data using the same virtual state representation, demonstrating the framework’s learning capability. A model-based two degrees-of-freedom (2DOF) output feedback controller serving as a comparisons baseline is designed and tuned using an identified system model. With similar complexity and linear controller structure, MFVI-RL is shown to be superior, confirming that the mod... [more]

Weighted Bandwidth Method for Stability Assessment of Complex DC Power Systems on Ships
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: aggregated loads, control bandwidth, DC power system, DC-DC power converter, HIL, LC filter, stability
In shipboard DC grids, tightly controlled load converters can impair the system stability, thus provoking the ship blackout. Conversely, load converters regulated by low control bandwidths are capable of inducing a stabilizing action. This compensation is verifiable if the loads are few. On the contrary, the balancing of control dynamics is hardly evaluated if the bus feeds multiple (i.e., hundreds or more) DC controlled loads. In this paper, the weighted bandwidth method (WBM) is presented to assess the small-signal stability of a complex shipboard power system by aggregating the multiple converters into two sets of controlled loads. Once the validity of the aggregation is proven, a stability study is performed on the two-loads system. As the last system is more inclined to instability than the initial multiple-loads system, the verification of the two-loads stability criterion guarantees that the shipboard DC grid also remains stable. Finally, emulations on HIL verify the proposed st... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: capacitor balance, cascaded H-bridge converter (CHB), common-mode voltage, current ripple, multilevel converter, optimal control, pulse-width modulation (PWM)
From its introduction to the present day, Cascaded H-Bridge multilevel converters were employed on numerous applications. However, their floating capacitor, while advantageous for some applications (such as photovoltaic) requires the usage of balancing methods by design. Over the years, several such methods were proposed and polished. Some of these methods use optimization techniques or inject a zero-sequence voltage to take advantage of the converter redundancies. This paper describes an optimization-based capacitor balancing method with additional features. It can drive each module DC-Link to a different voltage for independent maximum power point tracking in photovoltaic applications. Moreover, the user can specify the independent active power set points to modules connected to batteries or any other energy storage systems. Finally, DC current ripple can be reduced on some modules, which can extend the lifespan of any connected ultra-capacitors. The method as a whole is tested on re... [more]

Adaline-Based Control Schemes for Non-Sinusoidal Multiphase Drives—Part II: Torque Optimization for Faulty Mode
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: adaptive linear neuron, fault tolerance, multiphase machine, non-sinusoidal electromotive force, seven-phase machine, torque ripple elimination
Fault tolerance has been known as one of the main advantages of multiphase drives. When an open-circuit fault happens, smooth torque can be obtained without any additional hardware. However, a reconfiguration strategy is required to determine new reference currents. Despite advantages of non-sinusoidal electromotive forces (NS-EMFs) such as high torque density, multi-harmonics existing in NS-EMFs cause more challenges for control, especially under faulty conditions. Therefore, to guarantee high-quality vector control of multiphase drives with multi-harmonic NS-EMFs, this two-part study proposes control schemes using adaptive linear neurons (Adalines) to adaptively eliminate torque ripples. The proposed simple Adalines are efficient because of taking advantage of the knowledge of rotor position and of torque harmonic rank induced by the NS-EMFs. The control scheme using an Adaline for healthy mode was described in part I of this study. In this second part, the control scheme using anoth... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Cascaded H-Bridge (CHB), photovoltaic plants, scalable control
Renewable energy sources are becoming more relevant in recent decades in power generation, leading to investment in developing efficient systems. Specifically, in photovoltaic energy, modular converters are attracting interest since their characteristics enable them to work at high voltage and optimize the generated energy. The main aim of this paper is to propose a scalable control strategy for a grid-tied CHB (Cascaded H-Bridge) converter for large-scale photovoltaic power plants. The control proposed is able to take full advantage of converter scalability and modularity, being based on the parameters needed for bipolar sinusoidal PWM (Pulse Width Modulation), and thus reducing the calculus required and simplifying its implementation. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: actively heated clothing, automatic control, embedded software, thermal comfort, thermal model
Despite its recent growth in popularity, actively heated clothing still lacks the ability to cope with demanding user scenarios. As many of these deficiencies stem from an absence of automatic control, the authors propose a novel approach using a set of sensors embedded in the clothing to provide data about thermal comfort. Available sensors suffer from a lack of accuracy, as for practical reasons, they cannot be attached to the skin, whose temperature is usually used as a comfort indicator. To determine the magnitude of the problem, the authors conducted experiments, and a thermal model was proposed based on experimental findings; the output from the model was compared with the experimental reference data for three different upper body undergarments. The overall accuracy was found to be good: in most cases, the difference between the computed and reference skin temperatures did not exceed 0.5 °C. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: efficiency, generator design, optimization control, safety, wave power generation
Ocean wave power generation techniques (converting wave energy into electrical energy) have been in use for many years. The objective of this paper is to review the design, control, efficiency, and safety of ocean wave power generation systems. Several topics are discussed: the current situation of ocean wave power generation system tests in real ocean waves; the optimization design of linear generator for converting ocean wave energy into electrical energy; some optimization control methods to improve the operational efficiency of ocean wave power generation systems; and the current policy and financial support of ocean wave power generation in some countries. Due to the harsh ocean environment, safety is another factor that ocean wave power generation systems will face. Therefore, before the conclusion of this review, a damping coefficient optimization control method based on the domain partition is proposed to improve the efficiency and safety of ocean wave power generation systems.

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: frequency stability, NADIR, predictive control, solid-state transformer
Solid-state transformers (SSTs) are becoming an important solution to control active distribution systems. Their significant flexibility in comparison with traditional magnetic transformers is essential to ensure power quality and protection coordination at the distribution level in scenarios of large penetration of distributed energy resources such as renewables, electric vehicles and energy storage. However, the power electronic interface of SSTs decouples the nature of the inertial and frequency responses of distribution loads, deteriorating the frequency stability, especially under the integration of large-scale solar and wind power plants.
