Dynamics Analysis Using Koopman Mode Decomposition of a Microgrid Including Virtual Synchronous Generator-Based Inverters
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: data driven analysis, frequency characteristics, Koopman mode, microgrid, nonlinearity, virtual synchronous generator
In the field of microgrids (MGs), steady-state power imbalances and frequency/voltage fluctuations in the transient state have been gaining prominence owing to the advancing distributed energy resources (DERs) connected to MGs via grid-connected inverters. Because a stable, safe power supply and demand must be maintained, accurate analyses of power system dynamics are crucial. However, the natural frequency components present in the dynamics make analyses complex. The nonlinearity and confidentiality of grid-connected inverters also hinder controllability. The MG considered in this study consisted of a synchronous generator (the main power source) and multiple grid-connected inverters with storage batteries and virtual synchronous generator (VSG) control. Although smart inverter controls such as VSG contribute to system stabilization, they induce system nonlinearity. Therefore, Koopman mode decomposition (KMD) was utilized in this study for consideration as a future method of data-driv... [more]

Operating Cost Reduction in Distribution Networks Based on the Optimal Phase-Swapping including the Costs of the Working Groups and Energy Losses
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: annual operating costs, combinatorial optimization, improved sine cosine algorithm, optimal phase balancing, three-phase distribution networks, working groups
The problem of optimal phase-balancing in three-phase asymmetric distribution networks is addressed in this research from the point of view of combinatorial optimization using a master−slave optimization approach. The master stage employs an improved sine cosine algorithm (ISCA), which is entrusted with determining the load reconfiguration at each node. The slave stage evaluates the energy losses for each set of load connections provided by the master stage by implementing the triangular-based power flow method. The mathematical model that was solved using the ISCA is designed to minimize the annual operating costs of the three-phase network. These costs include the annual costs of the energy losses, considering daily active and reactive power curves, as well as the costs of the working groups tasked with the implementation of the phase-balancing plan at each node. The peak load scenario was evaluated for a 15-bus test system to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed ISCA in red... [more]

Determinants of Investments in Energy Sector in Poland
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: energy sector, GDP, interest rates, investments, macroeconomic indicators, Poland
There is much research about the determinants of investments, but there is a shortage of similar studies for Poland. Therefore, the overall goal of the paper is to analyze the determinants of investments made by enterprises from the energy sector as well as their delays in Poland in the years 2000−2019. In this period, a strong growth of investments in energy was observed in the country. In connection to this, the authors set four hypotheses and verified them with the following statistical methods: canonical analysis, linear and causality correlation, autocorrelation and cointegration tests. The paper found that there is a relationship between public consumption and investment spending of small enterprises in Poland. That means that only some macroeconomic parameters are connected with investments. Moreover, the changes in the value of past investments has a negative influence in current investments.

Multi-Objective Optimization of Autonomous Microgrids with Reliability Consideration
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: Genetic Algorithm, microgrid, off-grid, reliability, sizing
Microgrids operating on renewable energy resources have potential for powering rural areas located far from existing grid infrastructures. These small power systems typically host a hybrid energy system of diverse architecture and size. An effective integration of renewable energies resources requires careful design. Sizing methodologies often lack the consideration for reliability and this aspect is limited to power adequacy. There exists an inherent trade-off between renewable integration, cost, and reliability. To bridge this gap, a sizing methodology has been developed to perform multi-objective optimization, considering the three design objectives mentioned above. This method is based on the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) that returns the set of optimal solutions under all objectives. This method aims to identify the trade-offs between renewable integration, reliability, and cost allowing to choose the adequate architecture and sizing accordingly. As a case stud... [more]

DC Soft Open Points for Resilient and Reconfigurable DC Distribution Networks
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: DC distribution networks, DC–DC power converters, distributed control, intelligent agents, microgrids, power electronics, power system reliability, reconfiguration, smart grids, soft open points
This paper introduces the concept, theory of operation and applications of soft open points for direct current networks (DCSOPs). The DCSOP is based on a bidirectional DC−DC converter actively controlled to behave like a normal conductor. Unlike the normal conductor, the DCSOP can transfer the electric power between nodes at different voltage levels. With this advantage, the DCSOP can effectively control the power flow direction. Thus, DCSOPs can play a vital role in the reconfiguration of DC distribution networks. The operation and control of the DCSOP device was investigated, both in transient and steady-state conditions. Then, a DCSOP was integrated into a DC microgrid model to validate its ability to change the power flow through the modelled feeders. In addition, a set of reliability indicators was calculated for the DC microgrid under different reconfiguration scenarios. It was shown that reliability is improved when the DCSOP device implements network reconfiguration. Finally, a... [more]

Voltage Rise Mitigation in PV Rich LV Distribution Networks Using DC/DC Converter Level Active Power Curtailment Method
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: active power control, low voltage distribution system, photovoltaic, reactive power control
In low voltage (LV) distribution systems, the problem of overvoltage is common during the lower load intervals. This problem arises because of the high value of R/X ration of these systems. Many techniques are available in literature to cope up with this problem at the converter level; mostly these methods control the reactive or active power of the photovoltaic (PV) systems. However, there are certain restrictions and complications with the reactive power control of PV systems. Most of the active power control methods have been implemented at the inverter stage of the PV system, resulting in implementation complexities and excessive oversizing of the converter. Therefore, in this paper, a simple, de-rating based voltage control algorithm is proposed to overcome the problem of overvoltage. So far de-rating technique has been used to enable frequency support functions in PVs; in a first of its kind, de-rating technique is used here to control the voltages in PV rich LV distribution syst... March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: energy forecasting, hybrid model, multi-trait-driven methodology, multiple periodicity patterns, secondary decomposition
To improve the prediction accuracy of short-term load series, this paper proposes a hybrid model based on a multi-trait-driven methodology and secondary decomposition. In detail, four steps were performed sequentially, i.e., data decomposition, secondary decomposition, individual prediction, and ensemble output, all of which were designed based on a multi-trait-driven methodology. In particular, the multi-period identification method and the judgment basis of secondary decomposition were designed to assist the construction of the hybrid model. In the numerical experiment, the short-term load data with 15 min intervals was collected as the research object. By analyzing the results of multi-step-ahead forecasting and the Diebold−Mariano (DM) test, the proposed hybrid model was proven to outperform all benchmark models, which can be regarded as an effective solution for short-term load forecasting.

An Accurate Power Flow Method for Microgrids with Conventional Droop Control
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: conventional droop control, inverter, microgrids, power flow
With conventional droop control, the droop relationship between the voltage and reactive power is not purely linear because of the filter reactance. This paper focuses on the theoretical analysis to account for this characteristic and presents a precise power flow method for conventional droop control. The proposed method is universal, which can handle not only conventional droop control, but also other control strategies, such as robust droop control, constant power control, and constant voltage−frequency control. It can also handle frequency-dependent active and reactive power loads and is adapted for islanded and grid-connected systems. The proposed method extends the applicability of conventional power flow methods to microgrids so that the framework of the method is generic; any conventional power flow algorithm can be adapted to this framework. Compared with the time-domain simulation method, the proposed method is accurate, simple, and easy to implement for industrial applicatio... [more]

The Value of PV Power Forecast and the Paradox of the “Single Pricing” Scheme: The Italian Case Study
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: energy markets, photovoltaic power forecast, solar imbalance
One of the major problem of photovoltaic grid integration is limiting the solar-induced imbalances since these can undermine the security and stability of the electrical system. Improving the forecast accuracy of photovoltaic generation is becoming essential to allow a massive solar penetration. In particular, improving the forecast accuracy of large solar farms’ generation is important both for the producers/traders to minimize the imbalance costs and for the transmission system operators to ensure stability. In this article, we provide a benchmark for the day-ahead forecast accuracy of utility scale photovoltaic (PV) plants in 1325 locations spanning the country of Italy. We then use these benchmarked forecasts and real energy prices to compute the economic value of the forecast accuracy and accuracy improvement in the context of the Italian energy market’s regulatory framework. Through this study, we further point out several important criticisms of the Italian “single pricing” syst... [more]

Reflected Traveling Wave Based Single-Ended Fault Location in Distribution Networks
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: distribution network, fault location, single ended, traveling wave
Traveling wave (TW)-based fault-location methods have been used to determine single-phase-to-ground fault distance in power-distribution networks. The previous approaches detected the arrival time of the initial traveling wave via single ended or multi-terminal measurements. Regarding the multi-branch effect, this paper utilized the reflected waves to obtain multiple arriving times through single ended measurement. Potential fault sections were estimated by searching for the possible traveling wave propagation paths in accordance with the structure of the distribution network. This approach used the entire propagation of a traveling wave measured at a single end without any prerequisite of synchronization, which is a must in multi-terminal measurements. The uniqueness of the fault section was guaranteed by several independent single-ended measurements. Traveling waves obtained in a real 10 kV distribution network were used to determine the fault section, and the results demonstrate the... [more]

Biomechanical energy harvesting (EH) is a promising approach to extend the endurance or replace batteries to power microelectronic devices. In this paper, we would first review the different types of EH devices and analyze the key technologies. Secondly, to compare the advantages and disadvantages of different EH devices, the design guidelines of the EH device is proposed. According to the design guidelines, an EH device with a weight of only 110 g is designed, which is lighter than the suspended-load backpack (38 kg) and the knee harvester (1.6 kg). Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: electric vehicles, frequency beating, harmonic distortion, microgrid, power quality, supraharmonics
The recent increase in large converter-based devices like electric vehicles and photovoltaics increases supraharmonic emissions in low-voltage grids, potentially affecting customer equipment and the grid. This paper aims to give an overview of the different factors influencing supraharmonic emissions from electric vehicles and studies the propagation of supraharmonic currents through a small, low-voltage grid. Measurements in an unique lab representing a possible future household gave valuable insight on the possible developments in primary and secondary supraharmonic emissions in a conventional or power-electronic-dominated system. Emission is, for some vehicles, influenced by the type of grid connection, whereas others show no difference in emission. The supraharmonic currents mainly stay within the local installation due to absorption of nearby devices. The level of voltage distortion is dependent on the connection impedance. Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: false data injection attacks, microgrids, reactive power sharing, resilience, trust, voltage restoration
This paper addresses the problem of voltage and reactive power control of inverter-based distributed generations (DGs) in an islanded microgrid subject to False Data Injection (FDI) attacks. To implement average voltage restoration and reactive power sharing, a two-layer distributed secondary control framework employing a multiagent system (MAS)-based dynamic consensus protocol is proposed. While communication network facilitates distributed control scheme, it leads to vulnerability of microgrids to malicious cyber-attacks. The adverse effects of FDI attack on the secondary controller are analyzed, and the necessary and sufficient conditions to model stealthy attack and probing attack are discussed in detail. A trust-based resilient control strategy is developed to resist the impacts of FDI attack. Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: electrical vehicle interface, power compensation, power quality, voltage dip
Power quality issues have recently become a source of major concern due to the large increase in load demand and the addition of various sources of disturbance at the distribution level. Power quality mainly refers to voltage quality. Sudden load variations can lead to a fall in the line voltage magnitude, creating what is called a voltage sag. Many solutions have been proposed and implemented for voltage sag compensation. Power electronics-based solutions such as grid-connected converters and AC/DC schemes are considered basic units for transient voltage fault ride-through capability. This paper describes a multifunctional intelligent bidirectional electrical vehicle (EV) charger that is able to charge the EV battery at different power ratings in addition to voltage sag compensation. The performance of the proposed system is verified and validated through MATLAB/Simulink simulations (R2020A). Preventive Maintenance and Forced Outages in Power Plants in Korea
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: duration of generators, forced outage rate, Korea, preventive maintenance, survival analysis
Maintaining high facility reliability in power plants is essential to secure long-term electricity supply. This paper applies the survival analysis to the actual unit level power generation data in Korea to estimate the relationship between facility reliability and the preventive maintenance. Duration of generators between forced outages is used to measure plant reliability. the empirical analysis shows that preventive maintenance cost, planned outage for maintenance, use rate, and reserve margin lead to the longer duration of generators and, in turn, the lower forced outage rates. We uncover that the marginal benefit of the preventive maintenance cost is decreasing at an increasing rate. It indicates that the marginal benefit of the “current” maintenance cost is minimal. Results in the paper imply that power plants in Korea might be spending unnecessarily high maintenance costs considering already having world’s lowest forced outage rates.
