Event Effects Estimation on Electricity Demand Forecasting
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: basis expansion, electricity demand forecasting, irregular daily events, Japanese facility
We consider the problem of short-term electricity demand forecasting in a small-scale area. Electric power usage depends heavily on irregular daily events. Event information must be incorporated into the forecasting model to obtain high forecast accuracy. The electricity fluctuation due to daily events is considered to be a basis function of time period in a regression model. We present several basis functions that extract the characteristics of the event effect. When the basis function cannot be specified, we employ the fused lasso for automatic construction of the basis function. With the fused lasso, some coefficients of neighboring time periods take exactly the same values, leading to stable basis function estimation and enhancement of interpretation. Our proposed method is applied to the electricity demand data of a research facility in Japan. The results show that our proposed model yields better forecast accuracy than a model that omits event information; our proposed method res... [more]

Energy War Strategies: The 21st Century Experience
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: energy dependence matrix, energy resource, energy security, management, threshold of energy dependence
The purpose of this study was to identify the potential initiators of energy wars and determine their boundaries of influence through the prism of energy dependency. The study also evaluated the impact of energy resources on the economic development of 48 countries. The development priorities of those countries were substantiated through establishing the linkage between energy intensity and indicators reflecting the impact of energy resources on economic development. The study offered an energy dependence matrix, which shows which market players can actively participate in energy wars. Using data from the matrix and integrative analysis of energy dependence indicators, the energy dependence forecast was made. The forecast presents optimistic, realistic, and pessimistic scenarios for the short-term (up to 2025) and long-term (up to 2030) impacts of energy wars. The study proposes a novel approach to assessing the impact of energy wars, which implies that the consequences of energy-induc... [more]

Trends in Power Quality, Harmonic Mitigation and Standards for Light and Heavy Industries: A Review
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: active power filters, harmonic compensation, industrial power systems, international standards, power quality
The power quality of electrical grids is becoming an important issue worldwide. The electrical grid has to deliver sinusoidal voltages and currents without frequency or amplitude variations. However, the connection of non-linear loads generates harmonics that degrade the grid quality. The presence of harmonics in the load currents has many negative consequences and can distort the voltage waveform at the point of common coupling (PCC). Thus, it is essential to mitigate the harmonics in order to maintain a suitable grid quality. This is a shared responsibility between energy suppliers, manufacturers of electric and electronic equipment, and users. In this context, this work presents, for each stakeholder, a comprehensive analysis of their responsibilities and the standards that they should meet. Additionally, this paper reviews the most common types of filters used to comply with the applicable standards in industrial applications. Finally, in order to prove that active power filters al... Power Loss-Aware Transactive Microgrid Coalitions under Uncertainty
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: Bayesian coalitional game, energy trading, microgrid, smart grid, transactive distribution system
Peer-to-peer energy trading within microgrid (MG) communities emerges as a key enabler of the future transactive distribution system and the transactive electricity market. Energy trading within MGs refers to the idea that the surplus energy of one MG can be used to satisfy the demand of another MG or a group of MGs that form an MG community. These communities can be dynamically established through time, based on the variations of demand and supply of the interconnected MGs. In many modern MGs, Electric Vehicles (EVs) have been considered as a viable storage option due to their ease of use (plug-and-play) and their growing adoption rates by drivers. On the other hand, the dynamic nature of EVs escalates the uncertainty in the transactive distribution system. In this paper, we study the problem of energy trading among MGs and EVs with the aim of power loss minimization where there is uncertainty. We propose a novel Bayesian Coalition Game (BCG) based algorithm, which allows the MGs and... [more]

Robust Decentralized Tracking Voltage Control for Islanded Microgrids by Invariant Ellipsoids
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: decentralized control, invariant set, islanded mode, microgrid, robust tracking
This manuscript presents a robust tracking (servomechanism) controller for linear time-invariant (LTI) islanded (autonomous, isolated) microgrid voltage control. The studied microgrid (MG) consists of many distributed energy resources (DERs) units, each using a voltage-sourced converter (VSC) for the interface. The optimal tracker design uses the ellipsoidal approximation to the invariant sets. The MG system is decomposed into different subsystems (DERs). Each subsystem is affected by the rest of the system that is considered as a disturbance to be rejected by the controller. The proposed tracker (state feedback integral control) rejects bounded external disturbances by minimizing the invariant ellipsoids of the MG dynamics. A condition to design decentralized controllers is derived in the form of linear matrix inequalities. The proposed controller is characterized by rapid transient response, and zero error in the steady state. A robustness analysis of the control strategy (against lo... [more]

The Impact of Industry on European Union Emissions Trading Market—From Network Perspective
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: EU ETS, industry, network, trading
This study pioneers to investigate the impact of industry on the European Union carbon trading market based on network perspective. All the accounts in the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) are summarized at the industry level, and then the trading relationship between industries is constructed in the network layout. Based on this network, the centrality of each industry is measured—the industries of electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply (EGSAS), bank, broker, exchange, and wholesale trade excluding motor vehicles and motorcycles (WTEM) have higher centrality. Finally, the impact of industry on the evolution of networks is analyzed, Findings show that the financial intermediaries play important roles at the beginning of each phase, while their influences on the network will decrease as the market goes on. On the contrary, influences of some other industries like WTEM are gradually increasing.

Voltage Stability Analysis in Medium-Voltage Distribution Networks Using a Second-Order Cone Approximation
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: convex optimization, optimal power flow model, second order cone programming, voltage stability analysis
This paper addresses the voltage stability margin calculation in medium-voltage distribution networks in the context of exact mathematical modeling. This margin calculation is performed with a second-order cone (SOCP) reformulation of the classical nonlinear non-convex optimal power flow problems. The main idea around the SOCP approximation is to guarantee the global optimal solution via convex optimization, considering as the objective function the λ-coefficient associated with the maximum possible increment of the load consumption at all the nodes. Different simulation cases are considered in one test feeder, described as follows: (i) the distribution network without penetration of distributed generation; (ii) the distribution network with penetration of distributed generation; and (iii) the distribution grid with capacitive compensation. Numerical results in the test system demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed SOCP approximation to determine the λ-coefficient. In addition,... [more]

Time and Cost Efficient Cloud Resource Allocation for Real-Time Data-Intensive Smart Systems
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: cloud computing, data-intensive smart application, real-time systems, resource allocation, smart grid
Cloud computing is the de facto platform for deploying resource- and data-intensive real-time applications due to the collaboration of large scale resources operating in cross-administrative domains. For example, real-time systems are generated by smart devices (e.g., sensors in smart homes that monitor surroundings in real-time, security cameras that produce video streams in real-time, cloud gaming, social media streams, etc.). Such low-end devices form a microgrid which has low computational and storage capacity and hence offload data unto the cloud for processing. Cloud computing still lacks mature time-oriented scheduling and resource allocation strategies which thoroughly deliberate stringent QoS. Traditional approaches are sufficient only when applications have real-time and data constraints, and cloud storage resources are located with computational resources where the data are locally available for task execution. Such approaches mainly focus on resource provision and latency,... [more]

Power Quality Measurement and Active Harmonic Power in 25 kV 50 Hz AC Railway Systems
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: active power, electric energy meters, harmonic power, power quality analysis, railway electrical networks, traction converter
Railway electrical networks rated at 25 kV 50 Hz are characterised by significant levels of voltage and current harmonics. These frequency components are also time varying in nature due to the movement of trains and changing operational modes. Processing techniques used to evaluate harmonic results, although standardised, are not explicitly designed for railway applications, and the smoothing effect that the standard aggregation algorithms have on the measured results is significant. This paper analyses the application accuracy of standardised power quality (PQ) measurement algorithms, when used to measure and evaluate harmonics in railway electrical networks. A shorter aggregation time interval is proposed for railway power quality measurement instruments, which offers more accurate estimated results and improved tracking of time varying phenomena. Harmonic active power present in railway electrical networks is also evaluated in order to quantify the impact it has on the energy accumu... [more]

Power Exchange Prices: Comparison of Volatility in European Markets
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: Power price volatility, Southeast European power markets, volatility comparison
Power exchanges in Europe have been operating since the 1990s, while in the region of Southeast Europe (SEE) they are only a few years old. Volatility is considered to be one of the indicators that define the level of market development. In this paper, the authors examine 15 power markets in Europe with the novelty of special attention dedicated to the SEE markets, in terms of their volatility. The aim of this paper is to investigate volatility on SEE markets, and their correlation with developed European markets. Power price volatility is measured by price velocity concepts, the daily velocity based on daily/monthly/quarterly/yearly and overall average power prices. The outcomes reveal that power price volatility is higher in new SEE markets than in more mature European markets. The least volatile market is the Greek pool, followed by Switzerland and Austria. The Bulgarian market is the most volatile, followed by that of Romania, and these markets are nearly twice as volatile as the o... [more]

Experimental Study of Harmonic Influence on Electrical Energy Metering
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: active energy, capacitor banks, electrical energy meters, high harmonics, power quality, reactive energy, total harmonic distortion
The paper considers the influence of harmonics on the operating of electrical energy meters in a network with nonlinear loads. It is shown that electronic static meters of active energy are tested in the presence of distortions, and electronic static meters of reactive energy accuracy requirements do not take into account the possible presence of harmonics. It is revealed that the maximum influence on the error in active energy metering is exerted by the number of harmonics taken into account and their amplitude, and the error in reactive energy metering is additionally influenced by the phase angle at the fundamental and harmonic frequencies, which has been confirmed in laboratory conditions. Additionally, experimental studies of the capacitor bank’s influence on reactive energy metering has been carried out in the presence of nonlinear electrical loads. It is shown that when capacitor banks are connected, the error in reactive energy measurement and variation range of the phase shift... [more]

How Population Age Distribution Affects Future Electricity Demand in Korea: Applying Population Polynomial Function
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: electricity demand, electricity demand forecast, population age distribution, population aging, population polynomials
Mounting evidence shows that economic and climate variables such as income, energy price, and temperature impact energy demand. We examined another variable, population age distribution, which has rarely been considered, that could affect energy demand. We employ population polynomials to account for the impact of population age distribution on residential electricity consumption in Korea. Using panel data from 1990 to 2016, we verify that populations aged 20~44, and those over 60, raise residential electricity consumption. We additionally evaluate the impact of population age distribution in forecasting future electricity consumption and conclude that age distribution effects dominate total population growth effects.

Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: distribution network, FACTS, motor starting, oscillatory stability, renewable energy sources
In the modern power system, Flexible Alternating Current Transmission System (FACTS) devices are widely used. An increased share of the distributed generation (DG) and the development of microgrids change the power flows in the existing distribution networks as well as a conventional power flow direction from the transmission to the distribution network level which may affect the overall stability aspects. The paper shows the FACTS devices’ implementation influence on the performance of the distribution network with integrated renewable energy sources (RES) observing the aspects of the oscillatory stability and the low-voltage motor starting. The FACTS devices, in particular the static var compensators (SVC), have been allocated according to a novel algorithm proposed in the paper. Impact Analysis of Large-Scale Wind Farms Integration in Weak Transmission Grid from Technical Perspectives
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS), grid code, power quality, reactive power compensation, wake effect, wind power integration
The integration of commercial onshore large-scale wind farms into a national grid comes with several technical issues that predominately ensure power quality in accordance with respective grid codes. The resulting impacts are complemented with the absorption of larger amounts of reactive power by wind generators. In addition, seasonal variations and inter-farm wake effects further deteriorate the overall system performance and restrict the optimal use of available wind resources. This paper presented an assessment framework to address the power quality issues that have arisen after integrating large-scale wind farms into weak transmission grids, especially considering inter-farm wake effect, seasonal variations, reactive power depletion, and compensation with a variety of voltage-ampere reactive (Var) devices. Herein, we also proposed a recovery of significant active power deficits caused by the wake effect via increasing hub height of wind turbines. For large-scale wind energy penetra... [more]

A Bipolar ±13 mV Self-Starting and 85% Peak Efficiency DC/DC Converter for Thermoelectric Energy Harvesting
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: bipolar input, DC/DC converter, energy harvesting, flyback converter, impedance matching, Meissner oscillator, thermoelectric generator, transformer reuse, ultra-low voltage
This paper presents a novel converter for boosting the low-voltage output of thermoelectric energy harvesters to power standard electronic circuits. The converter can start up from a fully depleted state of the system off a bipolar ±13 mV input and can boost it to output voltages of up to 5 V. The converter comprises two transformers, one for each polarity that are multiplexed between an oscillator (used during startup) and a flyback converter (used during normal operation). To eliminate leakage currents in the input stage, the unused converter is completely turned off at startup and both converters are automatically shut off if the input power is found to be too low. Measurement results of the converter designed in a 180 nm CMOS process demonstrate a peak end-to-end conversion efficiency of 85% and nearly perfect impedance matching over the full input voltage range. This is the first time that a converter for ultra-low bipolar input voltages achieves the same performance as a unipolar... [more]

Short-Term Electricity Price Forecasting with Recurrent Regimes and Structural Breaks
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: day-ahead electricity markets, electricity price forecasting, fundamental-econometric models, market structural breaks
This paper develops a new approach to short-term electricity forecasting by focusing upon the dynamic specification of an appropriate calibration dataset prior to model specification. It challenges the conventional forecasting principles which argue that adaptive methods should place most emphasis upon recent data and that regime-switching should likewise model transitions from the latest regime. The approach in this paper recognises that the most relevant dataset in the episodic, recurrent nature of electricity dynamics may not be the most recent. This methodology provides a dynamic calibration dataset approach that is based on cluster analysis applied to fundamental market regime indicators, as well as structural time series breakpoint analyses. Forecasting is based upon applying a hybrid fundamental optimisation model with a neural network to the appropriate calibration data. The results outperform other benchmark models in backtesting on data from the Iberian electricity market of... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: active distribution networks, distributed generation, distribution system reconfiguration, hosting capacity maximization, multi-objective bilevel optimization, soft open points, TOPSIS
Soft open points (SOPs) are power electronic devices that replace the normal open points in active distribution systems. They provide resiliency in terms of transferring electrical power between adjacent feeders and delivering the benefits of meshed networks. In this work, a multi-objective bilevel optimization problem is formulated to maximize the hosting capacity (HC) of a real 59-node distribution system in Egypt and an 83-node distribution system in Taiwan, using distribution system reconfiguration (DSR) and SOP placement. Furthermore, the uncertainty in the load is considered to step on the real benefits of allocating SOPs along with DSR. The obtained results validate the effectiveness of DSR and SOP allocation in maximizing the HC of the studied distribution systems with low cost.

Price Forecasting for the Balancing Energy Market Using Machine-Learning Regression
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: balance energy market, demand response, imbalance market, loss of load probability, Machine Learning, price forecast
The importance of price forecasting has gained attention over the last few years, with the growth of aggregators and the general opening of the European electricity markets. Market participants manage a tradeoff between, bidding in a lower price market (day-ahead), but with typically higher volume, or aiming for a lower volume market but with potentially higher returns (balance energy market). Companies try to forecast the extremes of revenues or prices, in order to manage risk and opportunity, assigning their assets in an optimal way. It is thought that in general, electricity markets have quasi-deterministic principles, rather than being based on speculation, hence the desire to forecast the price based on variables that can describe the outcome of the market. Many studies address this problem from a statistical approach or by performing multiple-variable regressions, but they very often focus only on the time series analysis. In 2019, the Loss of Load Probability (LOLP) was made ava... [more]

Adaptive Algorithm of a Tap-Changer Controller of the Power Transformer Supplying the Radial Network Reducing the Risk of Voltage Collapse
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: adaptive algorithm, distributed generation, distribution system, OLTC, power distribution network, transformer controller, voltage collapse, voltage control, voltage regulation
The development of renewable energy, including wind farms, photovoltaic farms as well as prosumer installations, and the development of electromobility pose new challenges for network operators. The results of these changes are, among others, the change of network load profiles and load flows determining greater volatility of voltages. Most of the proposed solutions do not assume a change of the transformer regulator algorithm. The possibilities of improving the quality of regulation, which can be found in the literature, most often include various methods of coordination of the operation of the transformer regulator with various devices operating in the Medium-Voltage (MV) network. This coordination can be decentralized or centralized. Unfortunately, the proposed solutions often require costly technical resources and/or large amounts of real-time data monitoring. The goal of the authors was to create an algorithm that extends the functionality of typical transformer control algorithms... [more]

Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: capacitance transducers, electromagnetic coupling, electromagnetic induction, energy harvesting, home area network
Because traditional electronics cannot directly use the alternating output voltage and current provided by electric field energy harvesters, harvesting systems require additional regulating and conditioning circuits. In this field, this work presents a conditioning circuit, called serial switch-only rectifier (SSOR) for low-voltage electric field energy harvesting (EFEH) applications. The proposed approach consists of a tubular topology harvester mounted on the outer jacket of a 230 V three-wires electrical cable (neutral, ground, and phase), in which terminals are connected to SSOR. We compare SSOR performance with classic electronic approaches, such as a full-bridge rectifier and voltage doubler. The Economic Value of Wind Energy Nowcasting
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: balancing strategies, electricity market, nowcasting, wind energy forecasting
In recent years, environmental concerns resulted in an increase in the use of renewable resources such as wind energy. However, high penetration of the wind power is a challenge due to the intermittency of this resource. In this context, the wind energy forecasting has become a major issue. In particular, for the end users of wind energy forecasts, a critical but often neglected issue is the economic value of the forecast. In this work, we investigate the economic value of forecasting from 30 min to 3 h ahead, also known as nowcasting. Nowcasting is mainly used to inform trading decisions in the intraday market. Two sources of uncertainty affecting wind farm revenues are investigated, namely forecasting errors and price variations. The impact of these uncertainties is assessed for six wind farms and several balancing strategies using market data. Results are compared with the baseline case of no nowcasting and with the idealized case of perfect nowcast. The three settings show signific... [more]
