Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: development management, employees’ values, gender parity in management, holistic management, management by values, social values, strategic dimension management, strategic management, strategy management in the energy sector, values in the energy sector
A continual increase in the influence of exogenic conditions on a company’s ability to sustain and develop and increasing complexity of the management processes correlated with the discovery of new dimensions of an enterprise, which determine its potential—these all lead to a growing interest in the search for the factors which might facilitate the elevation of the level of integrity of a business model of an enterprise/organisational and managerial system of an enterprise. Currently, it is absolutely necessary to perceive an enterprise not only in the terms of a rational economic system that, in its activity, concentrates on the generation of a positive financial result, and the creation of its value for the stockholders, but also as the system, at the same time, is meant to act responsibly in relation to its stakeholders, society and the market. The observation of successful enterprises shows clearly that the company values make up an element indispensable for the creation of effecti... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: diffusion algorithm, distributed control, economic dispatch, frequency control, microgrid, multi-agent cooperative control
This paper proposes the distributed coordination of inverter-based resources, to optimize the operational cost of a microgrid system. The microgrid is considered a multiagent system, which includes a distributed generator agent and energy storage system agent. A communication network is utilized to exchange information among agents. The issue of communication failures is addressed in the proposed strategy, to ensure the stable operation of the control system. A two-level hierarchical cooperative optimization system is proposed in this paper for distributed economic dispatch. The primary controller is responsible for the frequency and voltage regulations, and the secondary controller is implemented in a diffusion-based distributed control scheme, for optimal microgrid management. The proposed control strategy consistently maintains the optimal operation and frequency, even in the event of communication failures. A five-node multiagent system including a dispatchable agent is considered.... [more]

Acoustic Energy Harvesting of Piezoelectric Ceramic Composites
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: composite, energy harvesting, piezoelectric
Acoustic energy is an often overlooked but increasingly prevalent source of ambient energy that could be scavenged to power a wide range of devices. Piezoelectric materials are often used, but the tradeoff between acoustic impedance matching and the amount of ceramic piezoelectric material as the active material has not previously been investigated. In this work, commercially available 1−3 dice and fill composites with various fill factors (25%, 45%, and 65% of Pb(Zr,Ti)O3) and different acoustic impedance values were tested using an impedance tube and then modeled using a KLM equivalent circuit model. As expected, a higher amount of ceramic material resulted in a higher acoustic absorption coefficient. Experimentally, the highest fill factor with the highest piezoelectric coefficient also resulted in larger output power at all dB levels, reaching a maximum of 115 nW (84 nW/cm3) at 111 dBSPL for the 65% fill sample. In the model, the 25% fill factor with the best acoustic impedance mat... [more]

Multilevel Dynamic Master-Slave Control Strategy for Resilience Enhancement of Networked Microgrids
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: converter control, dynamic master-slave, low bandwidth communication, networked microgrids, resilience enhancement
Conventional power management methods of networked microgrids (NMGs) are limited to the failure of pinned communication terminals and heavy communication burdens. This paper proposes a multilevel dynamic master-slave control strategy via two-level dynamic leaders to realize the resilience enhanced power management of NMGs. The first level dynamic leader with considerations of distributed energy resources (DERs) feature is selected to guide the output of DERs and achieve the power management within individual microgrid (MG). Subsequently, the secondary level leader considering each MG feature is selected among the bidirectional interlinking converters (BICs), whose signals would be shared with other BICs by communication to achieve power management among MGs. Moreover, the local weight selecting method (LWSM) is proposed to automatically select the two-level dynamic leaders according to the real-time system operation state. Compared with conventional methods, the communication among MGs... [more]

Stackelberg-Game-Based Demand Response for Voltage Regulation in Distribution Network with High Penetration of Electric Vehicles
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: demand response, flexible load, Genetic Algorithm, Stackelberg game, voltage control
With the development of the economy, electricity demand continues to increase, and the time for electricity consumption is concentrated, which leads to increasing pressure on the voltage regulation of the distribution network. For example, a large number of electric vehicles charging during a low-price period may cause the problem of under-voltage of the distribution network. On the other hand, the penetration of distributed power generation of renewable energy may cause over-voltage problems in the distribution network. This study proposes a Stackelberg game model between the distribution system operator and the load aggregator. In the Stackelberg game model, the distribution system operator affects the users’ electricity consumption time by issuing subsidies to decrease the frequency of voltage violations. As the representative of users, the load aggregator helps the users schedule the demand during the subsidized period to maximize profits. Case studies are carried out on the IEEE 3... [more]

Predicting Electricity Imbalance Prices and Volumes: Capabilities and Opportunities
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: balancing market, electricity price forecasting, imbalance, probabilistic forecasting, real-time market
Electricity imbalance pricing provides the ultimate incentive for generators and suppliers to contract with one another ahead of time and deliver against their obligations. As delivery time approaches, traders must judge whether to trade-out a position or settle it in the balancing market at the as-yet-unknown imbalance price. Forecasting the imbalance price (and related volumes) is therefore a necessity in short-term markets. However, this topic has received surprisingly little attention in the academic literature despite clear need by practitioners. Furthermore, the emergence of algorithmic trading demands automated forecasting and decision-making, with those best able to extract predictive information from available data gaining a competitive advantage. Here we present the case for developing imbalance price forecasting methods and provide motivating examples from the Great Britain’s balancing market, demonstrating forecast skill and value.

Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: arc furnaces, deformation of the arc voltage, melting power, multi-voltage electric arc model power quality
Due to high unit capacities, electric arc furnaces are among the receivers that significantly affect the power system from which they are supplied. Arc furnaces generate a number of disturbances to the power grid, including fast-changing voltage fluctuations causing the phenomenon of flickering light, asymmetry, and deformation of the voltage curve. The main issues discussed in the article are problems related to the distortion of current and voltage waveforms, resulting from the operation of electric arc furnaces. An analysis of the indices characterizing the voltage distortion recorded in the supply network of the arc furnaces is presented. The changes in the range of current and voltage waveform deformation in individual smelting phases in the arc furnace are also presented. Furthermore, the changes in the degree of deformation of the current and voltage waveforms in the individual smelting phases in an arc furnace are presented. Optimizing Allocation of Distributed Electric Heating for Large-Scale Access Distribution Considering the Influence of Power Quality
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: distributed electric heating, dual-layer, large-scale, power quality management
In this paper, a dual-layer grid comprehensive resource optimizing allocation model is proposed, which considers power quality controlling and load optimization scheduling under large-scale application of distributed electric heating. The upper-layer planning aims to minimize the active power loss of the distribution network, the minimum voltage deviation, and the minimum investment cost of the power quality control device. The capacity configuration of the management device and the number and location of the commutation switch configuration were determined. The lower layer is load optimization scheduling, with the minimum number of action switches and the minimum three-phase imbalance as the planning goals, and the decision variable is the state of the commutation switch. By co-simulation through Matlab and OpenDSS, the improved particle swarm algorithm and genetic algorithm are used for multi-objective optimization and the solution. A Comprehensive Societal Energy Return on Investment Study of Portugal Reveals a Low but Stable Value
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: capital services, energy converting capital, exergy analysis, extended energy sector, societal energy return on investment (EROI), useful energy stage
Energy return on investment (EROI) is a ratio of the energy obtained in relation to the energy used to extract/produce it. The EROI of fossil fuels is globally decreasing. What do the declining EROIs of energy sources imply for society as a whole? We answer this question by proposing a novel EROI measure that describes, through one parameter, the efficiency of a society in managing energy resources over time. Our comprehensive societal EROI measure was developed by (1) expanding the boundaries of the analysis up to the useful stage; (2) estimating the amount of energy embodied in the energy-converting capital; (3) considering non-conventional sources such as the muscle work of humans and draught animals; and (4) considering the influence of imported and exported energy. We computed the new EROI for Portugal as a case study. We find a considerably lower EROI value, at around 3, compared to those currently available, which is stable over a long-time range (1960−2014). This suggests an in... [more]

Enhanced Reactive Power Sharing and Voltage Restoration Based on Adaptive Virtual Impedance and Consensus Algorithm
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: consensus control, distributed generation, droop control, dSPACE controller, microgrids, virtual impedance
In this paper, power-sharing management control on an AC islanded microgrid is investigated to achieve accurate reactive power sharing. The droop control method is primarily used to manage the active and reactive power sharing among the DGs in the microgrid. However, the line impedance mismatch causes unbalanced reactive power sharing. As a solution a consensus-based adaptive virtual impedance controller is proposed, where the consensus algorithm is used to set the reactive power mismatch; then a virtual impedance correction term is generated through a proportional-integral controller to eliminate the line impedance mismatch. Thus, reactive power sharing is achieved without knowledge of the line impedances or using a central controller. Moreover, the consensus algorithm is used to restore the AC bus voltage to the nominal value by estimating the DGs average voltage using neighbor communication to compensate for the decreased magnitude of the voltage reference. Matlab/Simulink is used t... [more]

Line Loss Interval Algorithm for Distribution Network with DG Based on Linear Optimization under Abnormal or Missing Measurement Data
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: abnormal data collection, line loss interval calculation, linear optimization model, power flow variability
Data collection is more difficult in distribution network than transmission networks since the structure of distribution networks is more complex. As a result, data could be partly abnormal or missing, which cannot completely describe the operation status of distribution network. In addition, access of distributed generation (DG) to distribution network further aggravates the variability of power flow in distribution network. The traditional deterministic line loss calculation method has some limitations in accurately estimating the line loss of distribution network with DG. A line loss interval calculation method based on power flow calculation and linear optimization is proposed, considering abnormal data collection and distribution network power flow variability. The linear optimization model is established according to sensitivity of line loss to the injected power and sensitivity of transmission power of first branch to the injected power. Non-intrusive load monitoring takes place in residential and industrial contexts to disaggregate and identify loads connected to a distribution grid. This work studies the applicability and effectiveness for AC railways, considering the highly dynamic behavior of rolling stock as an electric load, immersed in varying contexts of moving loads. Both voltage−current diagrams and harmonic spectra were considered for identification and extraction of features relevant to classification and clustering. Principal components were extracted, approaching the problem using principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least square regression (PLSR). Clustering methods were then discussed, verifying separability performance and applicability to the railway context, checking the performance by means of the balanced accuracy index. Based on more than one hundred measured spectra, PLSR has been confirmed with superior performance and lower complexity. Independent verification based on dispersion and... [more]

Distributed Voltage Optimization Control of BESS in AC Distribution Networks with High PV Penetration
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: battery energy storage system, distributed control, high PV penetration, voltage optimization control
Large-scale integration of PV generators in distribution grids will impair the voltage stability due to the stochastic and fluctuated PV power generation. To tame the volatile PV power generation, battery energy storage systems (BESS) are deployed as an effective yet expensive power buffering mechanism. In this paper, a dual ascent-based voltage optimization control is proposed to achieve the concurrent regulation of battery State-of-Charge (SoC), nodal voltages, and distribution loss. This control features the limited dependence on the communication network with information interaction between neighboring nodes. Besides, it can achieve the optimal power flow minimizing the distribution loss while maintaining the BESS SoC within a healthy range. The derivation of the control framework is provided, and comparative simulations in the IEEE 37-node distribution system are performed to validate the effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm.

Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: 3-level, 5-level, 7-level, cable insulation, dielectric stress, dv/dt, frequency, insulation stress, leakage current, motor stator ground-wall insulation, multilevel inverters, RMS, stress, THD, voltage
Multilevel Inverters (MLIs) are widely sought after in medium-voltage applications like electric ships, electric aircraft, and renewable energy integration due to excellent advantages like lower device stress, better power quality, and modularity. However, non-sinusoidal excitations from MLIs pose a serious problem to motor-insulation and lead to their premature breakdown. This paper investigates stress in medium-voltage motor insulation when the stator winding is excited by 3-, 5-, and 7-level multilevel inverter output waveforms. The effect of firing angle on insulation stress is also studied for each of the multilevel inverters. Results show that in addition to the number of output voltage levels, PWM wave shape is a critical factor which affects the insulation stress. Both these factors work together to impact the insulation health. A strong correlation is shown between the increase in the voltage root mean square (RMS) value and increase in dielectric stress when ignoring the dv/d... [more]

Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: electromechanical coupling, energy harvesting, magnetic levitation
This paper focuses on the modelling and analysis of electromechanical coupling in a magnetic levitation energy harvester. A prototype harvester is built and its performance is tested with a shaker under resonance conditions. A Novel Optimal Power Allocation Control System with High Convergence Rate for DC Microgrids Cluster
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: battery energy sources, DC microgrids cluster, distributed control, economic dispatch, finite-time consensus protocol
A novel, fully distributed controller with a rapid convergence rate is developed to ensure the optimal loading dispatch for interconnected DC MGs. It comprises local and global-control levels, handling the economic load allocations in a finite-time manner, for distinct MGs and cluster of MGs, respectively. The local-control layer guarantees MG’s economic operation by matching the incremental costs (ICs) of all DGs, respecting the power equilibrium among generations and demands, DGs’ generation limits, as well as the transmission line losses. Furthermore, the economic operation of battery energy sources is considered, in the optimization problem, to strengthen the overall reliability and maximize energy arbitrage. The global controller adjusts MGs’ voltage references to determine the optimal exchanged power, between MGs, for reducing the global total generation cost (TGC). A rigorous analysis is developed to confirm the stable convergence of the developed controller. Extensive simulatio... [more]

Active Distribution Networks with Microgrid and Distributed Energy Resources Optimization Using Hierarchical Model
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: active distribution networks, distributed energy resources, microgrids, Optimization
Distribution networks have undergone a series of changes, with the insertion of distributed energy resources, such as distributed generation, energy storage systems, and demand response, allowing the consumers to produce energy and have an active role in distribution systems. Thus, it is possible to form microgrids. From the active grid’s point of view, it is necessary to plan the operation considering the distributed resources and the microgrids connected to it, aiming to ensure the maintenance of grid economy and operational safety. So, this paper presents the proposition of a hierarchical model for planning the daily operation of active distribution grids with microgrids. In this case, the entire grid operation is optimized considering the results from the microgrid optimization itself. If none of the technical constraints, for example voltage levels, are reached, the grid is optimized, however, if there are some violations in the constraints feedback is sent to the internal microgr... Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: DC microgrid, distributed control, distributed generation, fuzzy logic system, power sharing, secondary control, voltage control
In an islanded DC microgrid with multiple distributed generators (DGs), the droop control is employed to realize proportional current sharing among the DGs in the microgrid. The action of the droop control causes a deviation in the DC bus voltage which is exacerbated by the line impedance between the DG and the DC bus. In this paper, an advanced distributed secondary control scheme is proposed to simultaneously achieve accurate voltage regulation and cooperative current sharing in the islanded DC microgrid system. The proposed distributed secondary controller is introduced in the cyber layer of the system, and each controller shares information with neighbouring controllers via a communication network. The distributed technique maintains the reliability of the overall system if some part of the communication link fails. The proposed controller uses the type-II fuzzy logic scheme to adaptively select the secondary control parameters for an improved response of the controller. The suffic... [more]

Dynamic Performance Evaluation of the Secondary Control in Islanded Microgrids Considering Frequency-Dependent Load Models
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: frequency-dependent load model, microgrids, secondary control, voltage stability
Performance analysis is challenging in modern power distribution networks due to the increasing penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs) interfaced by voltage source converters (VSCs). Parameter uncertainty, black-box models of the components, and low inertia are some of the issues that must be addressed. The latter can represent high vulnerabilities to sudden load changes in a microgrid (MG). Additionally, the islanded operation represents a challenge for inverter-based (DERs), where secondary control must regulate the microgrid frequency and voltage to its nominal values. When a secondary control strategy is implemented, it is necessary to validate its performance under several conditions. Most existing research papers focus on the microgrid’s small-signal and transient stability. At the same time, little has been done on the influence of the load model on voltage stability. This type of analysis is required to ensure an adequate transition between the grid-connected and st... [more]

Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: AC bus signaling, distributed control, distributed generation, microgrid management
Renewable energy sources are growing in importance and reshaping power systems through microgrid (MG) networks. Some relevant issues in the management of an MG need to be addressed, such as voltage and frequency control, power balance between sources (sharing) and distributed loads, stability, security, power quality, etc. As a contribution, this manuscript presents a power management of AC MGs based on concepts of microeconomics theory for market equilibrium. The prices of active and reactive energy are informed through the AC voltage parameters such as magnitude, frequency and angle. This approach allows several sources and loads to operate with no extra communication interface. Experiments are provided to validate operation in many different operational scenarios using a hardware-in-the-loop environment.
