A Fractal Model of Effective Thermal Conductivity of Porous Materials Considering Tortuosity
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: fractal, porous materials, series-parallel model, thermal conductivity, tortuosity
Accurate estimation of the thermal conductivity of porous materials is crucial for the modeling of heat transfer and energy consumption calculation in energy, aerospace, biomedicine and chemical engineering, etc. The series-parallel model is a simple and direct method and is usually used in the prediction of the effective thermal conductivity (ETC) of porous materials. In this work, the weighted coefficients of the series and parallel section were obtained based on the tortuosity of the porous materials. Then, the physical model of the ETC of the porous materials was established. Furthermore, the ETC of the porous materials was developed using the fractal model to calculate the pore cross-sectional area of the porous materials. Finally, quantitative analysis of the characteristic parameters, e.g., porosity, tortuosity, tortuous fractal dimension and pore diameter distribution, of the ETC of the porous materials was conducted. The results show that the proposed model can provide an accu... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: absorber material, lead-free perovskite solar cells, MA3Sb2I9, SCAPS_1D
Methyl ammonium antimony iodide (MA3Sb2I9) perovskite-like materials have gained enormous attention from the scientific community because of their excellent aerobic stability, good optical properties, and less-toxic nature. Herein, we report on the simulation of FTO/TiO2/MA3Sb2I9/spiro-OMeTAD via solar cell capacitance (SCAPS) software. The thickness of the absorber layer, hole-transport layer, or electron-transport layer may significantly impact the photovoltaic performance of the perovskite solar cells (PSCs). In this connection, the thickness of the absorber layer, hole-transport layer, or electron-transport layer was varied during the simulation process and the optimized PSCs demonstrated a good efficiency of 14.90% including an excellent open circuit voltage (Voc) of 1.41 V. Furthermore, we also fabricated MA3Sb2I9-based PSCs and their photovoltaic performance was evaluated. The fabricated PSCs showed a reasonably good efficiency of 1.27% and Voc of 0.51 V.

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: cement, clay, flowability, hydroinsulation barriers
The purpose of this review was to present clay−cement suspensions that are mainly used in the construction and renovation of hydrotechnical facilities and flood protection. We present the characteristics of clay−cement slurries that are used in waterproofing barriers. One of their significant components are clays of different types and origins. Examples of kaolin-type and smectite-type clays, which are associated minerals, as balanced components of suspensions are presented. As mentioned, before the hydration process, barriers are suspended, and the main test methods are rheometric measurements. Their rheological parameters, extremely important from the point of view of injection mechanics, are shown. The higher the flow limit and faster the reconstruction of thixotropic structures, the higher the energy input of the injection processes. After the hydration process, it is important to form agglomerates and seal the barrier; therefore, we present a summary of the strength results, filtr... [more]

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: alternative fuel, co-combustion, energy recovery, municipal solid waste, refuse-derived fuel (RDF), thermochemical valorization
Reuse and recycling are preferred strategies in waste management to ensure the high position of waste resources in the waste management hierarchy. However, challenges are still pronounced in many developing countries, where disposal as a final solution is prevalent, particularly for municipal solid waste. On the other hand, refuse-derived fuel as a means of energy recovery provides a sustainable option for managing mixed, contaminated and residual municipal solid waste (MSW). This study provides one of the earliest assessments of refuse-derived fuel (RDF) from MSW in Ghana through a case study in the cities of Accra and Kumasi. The residual/reject fractions (RFs) of MSW material recovery were characterized for thermochemical energy purposes. The studied materials had the potential to be used as RDF. The combustible portions from the residual fractions formed good alternative fuel, RDF, under the class I, II-III classification of the EN 15359:2011 standards. The RDF from only combustibl... [more]

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: automatic seismic trip systems, ground motion parameters, nuclear power plant, soil–structure interaction, structure–soil–structure interaction
After the Fukushima nuclear accident in Japan, whether the structural safety of the nuclear power plant (NPP) can be guaranteed under an earthquake has been of wide concern. Automatic seismic trip systems (ASTS) have been deployed in NPPs. There are generally two units or more double units on the one NPP site, and the vibration energy of the structure can certainly affect its adjacent structures through the soil, and there is energy transfer and conversion between adjacent structures. At present, the distance between two reactors of NPPs of different reactor types is generally 100−200 m (this distance is referring to the distance between the centers of two reactors, which is slightly different for different reactor types). In the past, seismic instruments were used in the ASTS and the setting of shutdown threshold, so the impact of only one unit was considered in the structural analysis of NPPs, and the interaction of two reactors through site conditions was not considered. Evaluation of Bi-Functional Electrochemical Catalytic Activity of Co3O4-CoFe2O4 Composite Spinel Oxide
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: cobalt ferrite oxide, hydrothermal synthesis, oxygen evolution reaction (OER), oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), spinel oxide
Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are important for developing energy systems such as fuel cells and metal−air batteries. Precious metal catalysts, such as Pt and IrO2, have been considered electrochemical catalysts because of their excellent activity for the ORR and OER. However, their disadvantages, such as low durability for long-term operation and high price, necessitate the development of alternative electrochemical catalysts. Transition metal oxides with excellent electrical conductivity, high efficiency, and stability have been considered alternative electrochemical catalysts owing to their ORR and OER activities, which are similar to those of precious metal catalysts. Therefore, in this study, composite catalyst materials comprising Co3O4 and CoFe2O4 spinel oxides were synthesized via hydrothermal synthesis. The synthesized composite oxides exhibit bi-functional electrochemical catalytic activity for ORR and OER owing to the large active surfac... [more]

A Study of Digital Measurement and Analysis Technology for Transformer Excitation Magnetizing Curve
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: Fourier transform, hysteresis curve, integrator, transformer excitation magnetizing curves (TEMC)
Transformer excitation magnetizing curves (TEMC) reflect the dynamic operation characteristics of iron-core materials. Using numerical analysis and the waveform recording function of digital oscilloscopes, we developed a cost-effective method for determining the TEMC. This approach eliminates the need for conventional analog integrator circuits. To address the potential obstacles to the digital generation of TEMC—namely, curve offsets and curve transients—we proposed solutions involving Fourier filtering and determining the initial point of integration. The results indicate that the proposed approach yields results consistent with those of conventional analog integrator circuits and highlight its promise for applications in data processing.

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: catalyst, heteroatom doping, oxygen reduction, platinum, porous carbon, specific surface area, transition metal
Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells are considered one of the alternatives to fossil energy sources. The slow kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at the cathode and the high price of Pt-based catalysts remain one of the key challenges for the commercial viability of proton exchange membrane fuel cells. February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: hydronic solar system, paraffin wax, phase change material, solar energy, thermal energy storage
This study aims at investigating the improvement in the thermal performance of energy storage for a hydronic system when it is equipped with evacuated tubes integrated within a hot water tank. The PCM shell in the bottom section is thicker than at the top to maintain a uniform, minimal water temperature difference of 5 °C between the top and bottom sections of the hot water tank. The thermal performance of the system was analyzed in diverse months when the ambient temperature fluctuated. The results have revealed that the thermal performance in December, March, and June was 80%, 81%, and 84%, respectively, meaning that the thermal performance is optimal in warm weather. The results confirmed that the system had boosted the presence of hot water throughout the whole day, including the time of the sun’s absence, due to the release of stored PCM latent heat. The designed system solves the overheating problem and expands the availability of hot water through the cold weather. The system is... [more]

Metal−Organic Frameworks and Gas Hydrate Synergy: A Pandora’s Box of Unanswered Questions and Revelations
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: gas hydrate formation and dissociation, metal–organic framework, nano confinement, phase equilibrium
Recent research on the role of nanomaterials in gas hydrate science and a few review papers have highlighted the positive synergies between gas hydrates and metal−organic frameworks (MOFs) for gas separation and storage. Metal−organic frameworks consist of metal nodes and organic linkers connected by coordination bonds to form programmable modular structures that are symmetric and have tunable properties. Metal−organic frameworks, also known as microporous or nanoporous materials, provide a large pore volume and surface area suitable for capturing, separating and storing gases through physisorption mechanisms. However, water and water interactions within the nanopores, open metal sites, coordination bonds and surface make metal−organic framework usage in water-based technologies an exciting research topic. Water-based gas hydrate technology could be potential technology that can take advantage of MOF tunable properties, such as a large surface area and a high pore volume, to improve it... [more]

Subject: Materials
An experimental study of a hydrogen-containing jet’s impact on a palladium-based catalyst in an air atmosphere was carried out. High-intensity temperature fluctuations on the catalyst surface are obtained in the case when large-scale vortex structures are contained in the jet. These superstructures have a longitudinal size of 20−30 initial jet diameters and a transverse size of about 3−4 diameters. To form such structures, it is necessary to use long, round tubes in the Reynolds number range of 2000−3000 as a source of the impinging jet when a laminar-turbulent transition occurs in the channel according to the intermittency scenario. This effect was obtained at a low hydrogen content in the mixture (XH2 = 3…15%) and a low initial temperature of the catalyst (180 °C). It is shown that the smallest temperature fluctuations are obtained for the laminar flow in the tube (<1.5%), and they are more significant (<4%) for the turbulent regime at low Reynolds numbers (Re < 6000). Subject: Materials
Keywords: ammonia, detection, nitrate reduction, nitrogen reduction, quantification
Nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) and nitrate reduction reaction (NO3−RR) provide a potential sustainable route by which to produce ammonia, a next-generation energy carrier. Many studies have been conducted over the years, mainly emphasizing material design and strategies to improve catalytic performance. Despite significant achievements in material design and corresponding fundamental knowledge, the produced ammonia is still very limited, which makes it prone to bias. The presence of interferants (e.g., cations and sacrificial reagents), the pH of the solution, and improper analytical procedure can lead to the over or underestimation of ammonia quantification. Therefore, the selection of the appropriate ammonia quantification method, which meets the sample solution condition, along with the proper analytical procedures, is of great importance. In this review, the state-of-the-art ammonia quantification method is summarized, emphasizing the advantages, limitations, and practicality fo... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: electro-reduction, electro-synthesis, sodium borohydride, sodium metaborate
The recycling of sodium borohydride poses a huge challenge to the drive towards a hydrogen economy. Currently, mechano-chemical, thermo-chemical and electrochemical are the only reported methods of recycling sodium metaborate into sodium borohydride. Much attention has been devoted to the mechano-chemical and thermo-chemical methods of reduction, but little focus has been devoted to electrochemical methods. This review describes the electrochemical behaviour of borohydride (BH4−) and metaborate (BO2−) anions in alkaline solutions. The BH4− is stabilized in highly concentrated alkaline solutions, while the electro-oxidation of BH4− is dependent on the type of electrode material. The attempts to electro-reduce the BO2− into BH4− is reviewed and the challenges, suggestions and future outlook of electro-reduction for the recycling of BO2− into BH4− is highlighted.

Solid−Gas Thermochemical Energy Storage Materials and Reactors for Low to High-Temperature Applications: A Concise Review
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: Modelling, Simulation, solid–gas reactions, thermal energy storage, thermochemical energy storage, thermochemical reactors
Thermochemical energy storage materials and reactors have been reviewed for a range of temperature applications. For low-temperature applications, magnesium chloride is found to be a suitable candidate at temperatures up to 100 °C, whereas calcium hydroxide is identified to be appropriate for medium-temperature storage applications, ranging from 400 °C up to 650 °C. For the high-temperature range (750−1050 °C), oxides of cobalt, manganese, and copper are found to have the redox behaviour required for thermochemical heat storage. However, some of these materials suffer from low thermal conductivities, agglomeration, and low cyclability and, therefore, require further improvements. The concept of enhancing thermal conductivities through additives such as nanomaterials has been encouraging. From an operational point of view, fluidized-bed reactors perform better than fixed- and moving-bed reactors due to better particle interactions. There is, however, a need for the reaction bed to be fu... [more]
