The U.S. Deepwater Gulf of Mexico (DGOM) area that has some of the most prolific oil reservoirs is still awaiting the development of a viable enhanced oil recovery (EOR) process. Without it, DGOM will remain severely untapped. Exorbitant well costs, in excess of $200 million, preclude having extensive injection patterns, commonly used in EOR design frameworks. Aside from injection patterns, even operationally waterflooding has met with significant challenges because of injectivity issues in these over pressurized turbidities. The gas-assisted gravity drainage (GAGD) EOR process, that holds promise for deepwater environments because of lesser injectivity issues, among others, has been adapted in this work to overcome these limitations. Comparative Analysis of Long-Distance Transportation with the Example of Sea and Rail Transport

The subject of the article is a comparative long-distance transport analysis based on the relationship between central and eastern China and Poland. It provides an overview of issues related to long-haul China−Poland. The technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) method was proposed in the multi-criteria analysis. This method was briefly discussed, and its choice was justified. Then, the criteria adopted in the analysis were presented, i.e., time, cost, maximum number of containers, and ecology index. Multi-criteria analysis was carried out for three cases: the transport of one loading unit, 82 loading units, and 200 loading units. The geopolitical and operational situation on the transport route for the analyzed modes of transport was discussed.

This paper presents a computationally efficient novel heuristic approach for solving the combined heat and power economic dispatch (CHP-ED) problem in residential buildings considering component interconnections. The proposed solution is meant as a substitute for the cutting-edge approaches, such as model predictive control, where the problem is a mixed-integer nonlinear program (MINLP), known to be computationally-intensive, and therefore requiring specialized hardware and sophisticated solvers, not suited for residential use. Microalgae are currently considered to be a promising feedstock for biodiesel production. However, significant research efforts are crucial to improve the current biomass and lipid productivities under real outdoor production conditions. In this context, batch, continuous and semi-continuous operation regimes were compared during the Spring/Summer seasons in 2.6 m3 tubular photobioreactors to select the most suitable one for the production of the oleaginous microalga Nannochloropsis oceanica. Results obtained revealed that N. oceanica grown using the semi-continuous and continuous operation regimes enabled a 1.5-fold increase in biomass volumetric productivity compared to that cultivated in batch. This work aims at analyzing and architecting natural and artificial parameters to model a water-film cooling system for photovoltaic modules for some months under warm conditions. Methodologically, the theoretical and technical aspects were structured to develop, implement, monitor, and assess the cooling system at an on-grid, outdoor testing unit, considering the following: (i) the criteria to select and to approve the implementation site (infrastructure and climatologic and solarimetric conditions); (ii) the types, frequency and qualities of the monitored data; (iii) the system measurement, monitoring and control equipment; (iv) the commissioning of the system as a whole; and (v) the tests and results empirically obtained. The water-film cooling system reduces the temperature by 15−19%, on average, and up to a maximum of 24−35%. In this paper the results of the EMC tests of the wideband power sources: the PWM-based power source and audio power amplifier are discussed. They are intended to be used to supply the measuring system developed for evaluation of the wideband transformation accuracy of instrument transformers. Therefore, it is required to detect possible interferences that may be caused by the power supply to its operation and that may cause a decrease in its accuracy. The tests concern the conducted emission in the frequencies range from 150 kHz to 30 MHz and the radiated emission in the frequencies range from 30 MHz to 1 GHz. The objective of this study was to modify an existing liquid desiccant and indirect/direct evaporative cooling-assisted 100% outdoor air system (LD-IDECOAS) for humidification operation in winter. The energy benefit of the liquid desiccant-assisted humidification approach during the operation of LD-IDECOAS over the conventional method with a steam humidifier was evaluated through a detailed energy simulation. The humidification and enthalpy effectiveness values of the liquid desiccant humidification measured from laboratory tests were 0.41 and 0.49, respectively, which were applied to the energy simulation for the modified system. Settings of protection are essential to ensure the sensitivity and selectivity needed to detect defects. Making the correct settings requires the calculation of the fault currents with as little error as possible. Fault currents are influenced by the parameters of the electrical networks, including the state of the insulation and the Petersen coil, which changes during their operation electrical networks. This paper analyzes how the insulation parameters of medium voltage power lines, the parameters of the Petersen coil used to treat the neutral of the medium voltage electrical network and the value of the resistance at the fault location influence the fault current in the case of a single-phase fault. The COVID-19 pandemic and the associated lockdown can be regarded as a forced social experiment, the results of which show how to use energy under specific conditions. During this period, there was a reduction in electricity consumption at the level of the power system, but a different specificity distinguishes the group of household users. The article aims at presenting and analysing the identified issues concerning residential electricity users based on the experience from the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. Data from energy meters from almost 7000 flats in Warsaw’s housing estates during the lockdown in 2020 and the analogous period before the pandemic were used. This paper varies load conditions in a single-phase induction motor and deals with consequent effects on the electromagnetic characteristics in terms of a balanced and unbalanced operation. Based on a balanced-load condition, the magnetic field, electromagnetic losses, magnetic torque are quantified by the time-stepping finite element method at six different loads. The spatial distribution of the air-gap magnetic field are investigated to characterize the existence between the load variation and unbalanced operation. The components of electromagnetic losses are analyzed in terms of main parameters degrading the operating efficiency according to the load variation. The result can show the importance of building the magnetic balance for a high performance, and the design guideline for SPIMs running at multiple operating points is discussed.

Series connections of modules in cascaded multilevel converters are prone to power imbalances due to voltage differences on their DC side. When modules are connected to direct current (DC) sources, such as photovoltaic panels, the capability of withstanding power imbalances is crucial for generating the maximum power. In order to provide a possible solution for this requirement, this paper proposes a control strategy called Quadrature Voltage Compensation, which allows a wide range of power imbalances. Commercial use of H2 production catalysts requires a repeated use/stop/store and reuse of the catalyst. Ideally, this cycle should be possible under ambient O2. Herein we exemplify the concept of Use-Store-Reuse (USR) of a (Ru-phosphine) catalyst in a biphasic catalytic system, for H2 production via dehydrogenation of HCOOH. The catalytic system can operate uninterrupted for at least four weeks, including storage and reuse cycles, with negligible loss of its catalytic efficiency. The catalytic system consisted of a RuP(CH2CH2PPh2)3 (i.e. RuPP3) in (tri-glyme/water) system, using KOH as a cocatalyst, to promote HCOOH deprotonation. In a USR cycle of 1 week, followed by storage for three weeks under ambient air and reuse, the system achieved in total TONs > 90,000 and TOFs > 4000 h−1. Thus, for the first time, a USR concept with a readily available stable ruthenium catalyst is presented, operating without any protection from O2 or light, and able to retain its catalytic performance.
Operation of the Prototype Device for Induction Heating of Railway Turnouts at Various Operating Frequencies

Devices for electric heating of railroad turnouts are elements of the railway infrastructure protecting railroad turnouts against blocking them by snow and ice in winter. They often operate based on the principle of resistance heating but other solutions are also emerging. In this paper, one of such new solutions using the phenomenon of electromagnetic induction was presented and tested under various conditions. In comparison with traditional resistive heaters, the inductive ones offer heat distribution directly to ice and snow without intermediation of rails. Moreover, they can use a wide range spectrum of frequency to shorten the melting time. The resistive and inductive devices were tested with respect to melting time, temperatures and energy consumption. The article presents a method of forecasting the deformation of the land surface over large fields of underground gas storage facilities located in salt caverns. The solution allows for taking into account many parameters characterising the operation of underground gas storage facilities, such as cavern processes (leaching, enlargement, operational, etc.), their depth, distribution, diameter, shape, and many others. The advantage of the applied method over other available options is the possibility of using it for large fields of caverns while keeping the calculations simple. The effectiveness of the method has been proven for predicted surface subsidence for the EPE field with 114 underground caverns. The hypothesis was compared with the measurement outcomes.
Effect of Braking Plates on the Aerodynamic Behaviors of a High-Speed Train Subjected to Crosswinds

Using aerodynamic resistance to provide braking force for trains is an economical braking method. It has few components to wear out and requires no energy. But the aerodynamic braking plate will significantly affect train’s aerodynamics behaviors. This paper studies the effect of the braking plates’ layout on the aerodynamic force of head car when a train is running under a crosswind. The results show that the braking plate will not only increase the drag force, but also significantly affect the lift and lateral force of the train’s head car. The installation position of the braking plates will also have a great effect on the aerodynamic force. In order to increase the drag force and weaken other aerodynamic force changes of the head car, we suggest that the first braking plate be arranged at the end of a streamlined shape, and the second braking plate be arranged at the middle of the car body. Smart spaces are characterized by their ability to capture a holistic picture of their contextual situation. This often includes the detection of the operative states of electrical appliances, which in turn allows for the recognition of user activities and intentions. For electrical appliances with largely different power consumption characteristics, their types and operational times can be easily inferred from data collected at a single metering point (typically, a smart meter). However, a disambiguation between consumers of the same type and model, yet located in different areas of a smart building, is not possible this way.
