Keywords: bioenergy, bioenergy value chains, mapping, marginal, market barriers, sustainability assessment, techno-economic assessment, underutilised and contaminated lands
Bioenergy represents the highest share of renewable energies consumed in the European Union and is still expected to grow. This could be possible by exploring bioenergy production on Marginal, Underutilised, and Contaminated lands (MUC) that are not used for agricultural purposes and therefore, present no competition with food/feed production. In this paper, the viability and sustainability of bioenergy value chains on these lands is investigated and measures for market uptake were developed. Using three case study areas in Italy, Ukraine, and Germany, a screening of MUC lands was conducted, then an agronomic assessment was performed to determine the most promising crops. Then, techno-economic assessments followed by sustainability assessments were performed on selected value chains. This concept was then automated and expanded through the development of a webGIS tool. The tool is an online platform that allows users to locate MUC lands in Europe, to define a value chain through the se... [more]

Keywords: current sensor, current transformer, self-powered, time-multiplexed
Current measurement is a key part of the monitoring system for power transmission lines. Compared with the conventional current sensor, the distributed, self-powered and contactless current sensor has great advantages of safety and reliability. By integrating the current sensing function and the energy harvesting function of current transformer (CT), a time-multiplexed self-powered wireless sensor that can measure the power transmission line current is presented in this paper. Two operating modes of CT, including current sensing mode and energy harvesting mode, are analyzed in detail. Through the design of mode-switching circuit, harvesting circuit and measurement circuit are isolated using only one CT secondary coil, which eliminates the interference between energy harvesting and current measurement. Thus, the accurate measurement in the current sensing mode and the maximum energy collection in the energy harvesting mode are both realized, all of which simplify the online power transm... [more]

Keywords: cardoon stalks, microbial oil, production cost, sensitivity analysis, yeast biodiesel
Today one of the most interesting ways to produce biodiesel is based on the use of oleaginous microorganisms, which can accumulate microbial oil with a composition similar to vegetable oils. In this paper, we present a thermo-chemical numerical model of the yeast biodiesel production process, considering cardoon stalks as raw material. The simulation is performed subdividing the process into the following sections: steam explosion pre-treatment, enzymatic hydrolysis, lipid production, lipid extraction, and alkali-catalyzed transesterification. Numerical results show that 406.4 t of biodiesel can be produced starting from 10,000 t of lignocellulosic biomass. An economic analysis indicates a biodiesel production cost of 12.8 USD/kg, thus suggesting the need to increase the capacity plant and the lipid yield to make the project economically attractive. In this regard, a sensitivity analysis is also performed considering an ideal lipid yield of 22% and 100,000 t of lignocellulosic biomass.... [more]

Keywords: anaerobic digestion, chemically enhanced primary treatment, economic analysis, energy balance, sludge, WWTP
The recent trend of turning wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) into energy self-sufficient resource recovery facilities has led to a constant search for solutions that fit into that concept. One of them is chemically enhanced primary treatment (CEPT), which provides an opportunity to increase biogas production and to significantly reduce the amount of sludge for final disposal. Laboratory, pilot, and full-scale trials were conducted for the coagulation and sedimentation of primary sludge (PS) with iron sulphate (PIX). Energy and economic balance calculations were conducted based on the obtained results. Experimental trials indicated that CEPT contributed to an increase in biogas production by 21% and to a decrease in sludge volume for final disposal by 12% weight. Furthermore, the application of CEPT may lead to a decreased energy demand for aeration by 8%. The removal of nitrogen in an autotrophic manner in the side stream leads to a further reduction in energy consumption in WWTP (u... [more]

Keywords: condensation hood, heat exchanger model, species transport model, UDF steam condensation model
The development of a numerical model and design for the innovative construction of a heat exchanger (HE) used in a condensation hood (being a part of the combi-steamer) are described in this work. The model covers an air-steam flow, heat transfer, and a steam condensation process. The last two processes were implemented with the use of an in-house model introduced via User Defined Functions (UDF). As the condensate volume is negligible compared to the steam, the proposed model removes the condensate from the domain. This approach enabled the usage of a single-phase flow for both air and steam using a species transport model. As a consequence, a significant mesh and computation time reduction were achieved. The new heat exchanger is characterised by reorganised fluid flow and by externally finned pipes (contrary to the original construction, where internally finned pipes were used). This allowed a reduction in the number of the pipes from 48 to 5, which significantly simplifies construc... [more]

The continued growth and evolving lifestyles of the human population require the urgent development of sustainable production in all its aspects. Microalgae have the potential of the sustainable production of various commodities; however, the energetic requirements of algae cultivation still largely contribute to the overall negative balance of many operation plants. Here, we evaluate energetic efficiency of biomass and lipids production by Chlorella pyrenoidosa in multi-tubular, helical-tubular, and flat-panel airlift pilot scale photobioreactors, placed in an indoor environment of greenhouse laboratory in Central Europe. Our results show that the main energy consumption was related to the maintenance of constant light intensity in the flat-panel photobioreactor and the culture circulation in the helical-tubular photobioreactor. The specific power input ranged between 0.79 W L−1 in the multi-tubular photobioreactor and 6.8 W L−1 in the flat-panel photobioreactor. The construction of m... [more]

Keywords: cooling efficiency, natural draft dry cooling system with only one tower, power-generating unit, thermo-flow characteristics
In recent years, natural draft dry cooling systems with only one tower have been adopted in some 2 × 660 MW power-generating units owing to the advantage of lower construction costs. The operating cases of two power-generating units and one power-generating unit will both appear based on the power load requirement, which may lead to very different flow and heat transfer performances of this typical cooling system. Therefore, this research explores the local thermo-flow characteristics of air-cooled heat exchangers and sectors, and then analyzes the overall cooling performance of the above two operating cases under various wind conditions. Using the numerical modeling method, the results indicate that the flow and heat transfer performance of this cooling system decreases significantly in the case of one unit with half sectors dismissed. At wind speeds lower than 8 m/s, the difference in turbine back pressure between two units and one unit appears obviously higher than in other wind con... [more]

Keywords: antilock braking system (ABS), electric braking system, electric vehicles (EV), test bench
An antilock braking system (ABS) is one of the most important components in a road vehicle, which provides active protection during braking, to prevent the wheels from locking-up and achieve handling stability and steerability. The all-electric ABS without any hydraulic components is a potential candidate for electric vehicles. To demonstrate and examine the all-electric ABS algorithms, this article proposes a single-wheel all-electric ABS test bench, which mainly includes the vehicle wheel, the roller, the flywheels, and the electromechanical brake. To simulate dynamic operation of a real vehicle’s wheel, the kinetic energy of the total rotary components in the bench is designed to match the quarter of the one of a commercial car. The vertical force to the wheel is adjustable. The tire-roller contact simulates the real tire-road contact. The roller’s circumferential velocity represents the longitudinal vehicle velocity. The design and analysis of the proposed bench are described in de... [more]

Keywords: energy recovery, longitudinal vibration of the drill pipe, modal analysis, piezoelectric cantilever beam, while drilling device
A while-drilling energy harvesting device is designed in this paper to recovery energy along with the longitudinal vibration of the drill pipes, aiming to serve as a continuous power supply for downhole instruments during the drilling procedure. Radial size of the energy harvesting device is determined through the drilling engineering field experience and geological survey reports. A piezoelectric coupling model based on the selected piezoelectric material was established via COMSOL Multiphysics numerical simulation. The forced vibration was analyzed to determine the piezoelectric patch length range and their best installation positions. Modal analysis and frequency response research indicate that the natural frequency of the piezoelectric cantilever beam increased monotonously with the increase of the piezoelectric patch’ thickness before reaching an inflection point. Moreover, the simulation results imply that the peak voltage of the harvested energy varied in a regional manner with... [more]

Keywords: CO2 utilization, renewable hydrogen, synthetic natural gas, Technoeconomic Analysis
Production of synthetic natural gas (SNG) offers an alternative way to valorize captured CO2 from energy intensive industrial processes or from a dedicated CO2 grid. This paper presents an energy-efficient way for synthetic natural gas production using captured CO2 and renewable hydrogen. Considering several renewable hydrogen production sources, a techno-economic analysis was performed to find a promising path toward its practical application. In the paper, the five possible renewable hydrogen sources (photo fermentation, dark fermentation, biomass gasification, bio photolysis, and PV electrolysis) were compared to the two reference cases (steam methane reforming and water electrolysis) from an economic stand point using key performance indicators. Possible hydrogen production capacities were also considered for the evaluation. From a technical point of view, the SNG process is an efficient process from both energy efficiency (about 57%) and CO2 conversion rate (99%). From the evaluat... [more]

The design of electricity markets determines the technologies, services and modes of operation that can access value, consequently shaping current and future electricity landscapes. This paper highlights that the efficacy of Great Britain’s electricity market design in facilitating net zero is inadequate and must be reconfigured. The rules of the current electricity market design are remnants of an electricity sector dominated by large-scale, centralised, fossil fuel technologies. Therefore, routes to market for the provision of necessary services to support net zero, not least flexibility, are largely inaccessible for distributed energy resources and, despite their benefits to the system, are thus undervalued. Based upon a review and consolidation of 30 proposed electricity market designs from liberalised electricity sectors, this paper proposes a new electricity market design for Great Britain. This design is presented alongside a new institutional framework to aid in the efficient o... [more]

Keywords: box strength, buckling, corrugated board, crease, laboratory tests, McKee formula, orthotropic panels, perforation
This paper presents a modified analytical formula for estimating the static top-to-bottom compressive strength of corrugated board packaging with different perforations. The analytical framework is based here on Heimerl’s assumption with an extension from a single panel to a full box, enhanced with a numerically calculated critical load. In the proposed method, the torsional and shear stiffness of corrugated cardboard, as well as the panel depth-to-width ratio is implemented in the finite element model used for buckling analysis. The new approach is compared with the successful though the simplified McKee formula and is also verified with the experimental results of various packaging designs made of corrugated cardboard. The obtained results indicate that for boxes containing specific perforations, simplified methods give much larger estimation error than the analytical−numerical approach proposed in the article. To the best knowledge of the authors, the influence of the perforations h... [more]

Keywords: BAT algorithm, boost inverter, photovoltaic, SHGqBI, total harmonic distortions
Owing to the intermittent nature of renewable energy systems, an improved power extraction technique and modernized power modulators are to be designed to overcome power quality challenges. Attesting to this fact, this work aims to enhance the efficiency of the photovoltaic (PV) system using the BAT algorithm (BA) and enhances the overall performance of the system using modified inverter topology. Specifically, a new power electronic modulator, i.e., a simplified high gain quasi-boost inverter (SHGqBI), is implemented to eliminate the downsides of the conventional system. The proposed inverter reduces the additional components that can condense the volume of the design with reduced conduction and switching losses. The combination of BA-based PV rated 250 W and novel inverter configuration pick the global peak power with enhanced power quality. Notably, BA extracts the maximum power from the panel meritoriously with about 98.8% efficiency. This is because BA uses the global input parame... [more]

Keywords: grid-tied PV, PV derating factor, simulation and optimization, Technoeconomic Analysis
Photovoltaic (PV) systems encounter substantial losses throughout their lifespan due to the different derating factors of PV modules. Those factors mainly vary according to the geographical location and PV panel characteristics. However, the available literature does not explicitly concentrate on the technical and economic impact of the derating factors within the PV system. Owing to that necessity, this study performs a comprehensive analysis of various PV loss parameters followed by a techno-economic assessment of derating factors using the average value on a grid-connected and optimally tilted PV system located in Hatiya, Bangladesh. Some criteria linked to the derating factors such as PV degradation and ambient temperature are further explored to analyze their impact on the aforementioned power system. Simulation results show that PV power generation would vary around 12% annually, subject to a 10% variation in the derating factor. Again, a 10% difference in the derating factor cha... [more]

Keywords: anaerobic digestion, digestate treatment, liquid phase, organic compound, solid waste, solid–liquid separation
Fast development of centralized agricultural biogas plants leads to high amounts of digestate production. The treatment and disposal of liquid fractions after on-site digestate solid−liquid separation remains problematic due to their high organic, nutrient and aromatic contents. This work aims to study the variability of the remaining compounds in the digestate liquid fractions in relation to substrate origin, process parameters and solid−liquid separation techniques. Twenty-nine digestates from full-scale codigestion biogas plants and one waste activated sludge (WAS) digestate were collected and characterized. This study highlighted the combined effect of the solid−liquid separation process and the anaerobic digestion feedstock on the characteristics of liquid fractions of digestates. Two major clusters were found: (1) liquid fractions from high efficiency separation process equipment (e.g., centrifuge and others with addition of coagulant, flocculent or polymer) and (2) liquid fracti... Keywords: hydrofluorocarbons, hydrofluoroolefins, low GWP, refrigerants
In this work, which is related to the current European Parliament Regulation on restrictions affecting refrigeration, four new three-component refrigerants have been proposed; all were created using low Global Warming Potential(GWP) synthetic and natural refrigerants. The considered mixtures consisted of R32, R41, R161, R152a, R1234ze (E), R1234yf, R1243zf, and RE170. These mixtures were theoretically tested with a 10% step in mass fraction using a triangular design. The analysis covered two theoretical cooling cycles at evaporating temperatures of 0 and −30 °C, and a 30 °C constant condensing temperature. The final stage of the work was the determination of the best mixture compositions by thermodynamic and operational parameters. R1234yf−R152a−RE170 with a weight share of 0.1/0.5/0.4 was determined to be the optimal mixture for potentially replacing the existing refrigerants.

Keywords: CapEx method, capital expenditure (CapEx), cost breakdown and parameterisation, cost model, Froude law similarities, Similitude method, Technoeconomic Analysis, wave energy converter (WEC)
Wave energy converters (WECs) can play a significant role in the transition towards a more renewable-based energy mix as stable and unlimited energy resources. Financial analysis of these projects requires WECs cost and WEC capital expenditure (CapEx) information. However, (i) cost information is often limited due to confidentiality and (ii) the wave energy field lacks flexible methods for cost breakdown and parameterisation, whereas they are needed for rapid and optimised WEC configuration and worldwide site pairing. This study takes advantage of the information provided by Wavepiston to compare different costing methods. The work assesses the Froude-Law-similarities-based “Similitude method” for cost-scaling and introduces the more flexible and generic “CapEx method” divided into three steps: (1) distinguishing WEC’s elements from the wave energy farm (WEF)’s; (2) defining the parameters characterising the WECs, WEFs, and site locations; and (3) estimating elements that affect WEC an... April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: design numerical model, mining, rock pillar, underground stability
In underground mining, the design of rock pillars is of crucial importance as these are structures that allow safe mining by maintaining the stability of the surrounding excavations. Pillar design is often a complex task, as it involves estimating the loads at depths and the strength of the rock mass fabric, which depend on the intact strength of the rock and the shape of the pillar in terms of the aspect ratio (width/height). The design also depends on the number, persistence, orientation, and strength of the discontinuities with respect to the orientation and magnitude of the stresses present. Solutions to this engineering problem are based on one or more of the following approaches: empirical design methods, practical experience, and/or numerical modeling. Based on the similarities between masonry structures and rock mass characteristics, an equivalent approach is proposed as the one commonly used in masonry but applied to rock pillar design. Numerical models using different geometr... [more]
Design, Analysis and Implementation of the Tapped-Inductor Boost Current Converter on Current Based System

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: boost converter, current based system, current converter, tapped-inductor
Power converters play a crucial role in renewable energy systems. Most well-known power conversion topologies are voltage mode, not current mode. Current mode converters are more appropriate for renewable energy systems such as photovoltaic systems since solar panels are typical current sources. The vast usage of battery as energy storage is also a current sink for constant current mode charging. Utilizing current mode converters should be more straightforward and judicious. In this study, a new topology for the tapped-inductor power conversion circuit family is introduced. The proposed topology has been investigated thoroughly based on theories, simulations and experiments. The boost version is examined as an example to downstate the performance. A detailed comparison with the conventional boost current converter is conducted in this paper.

Keywords: bearingless synchronous reluctance motor, electromagnetic analysis, finite element analysis, vibration analysis
The traditional bearingless synchronous reluctance motor (BSynRM) with salient pole rotor has some drawbacks such as high suspension force ripple, low torque density and low power factor. To overcome the above shortcomings, the permanent-magnet-assisted bearingless synchronous reluctance motor (PMa-BSynRM) is proposed. In this paper, two types of PMa-BSynRM rotors with the same number of permanent magnets but different magnetic barrier structures are designed. A traditional BSynRM with a salient pole rotor is introduced, and the electromagnetic and vibration characteristics of the three BSynRM are analyzed and compared. Firstly, the rotor structures of the two PMa-BSynRMs are designed, and the operation principle of the BSynRM is introduced. Secondly, electromagnetic characteristics of the three motors are analyzed and compared in detail using FEA software. Thirdly, the vibration analysis of the three motors is carried out. Finally, the experimental prototype platforms are built. The F... [more]
Optimal Shape of Non-Linear Partially Wet Annular Fins for Maximum Efficiency

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: conjugate gradient method, non-linear design problem, partially wet annular fins
Heat exchangers with annular finned-tube type and partially wetted condition are utilized widely in engineering systems, such as air-conditioning systems and refrigeration systems. In addition, the physical properties of fin materials should be considered as functions of temperature in reality and thus become a non-linear problem. Based on the above two conditions, an optimal partially wet annular fin design problem, with temperature-dependent thermal properties of the fin, to yield optimal fin efficiency was investigated in the present work, which has not been examined previously and it is the novelty of this study. An iterative regularization algorithm using the conjugate gradient method (CGM) is considered as the optimization tool based on the desired fin efficiency under a fixed fin volume constraint. The partially wet annular fin condition can result if the relative humidity of surrounding air is between 80 and 90%. Finally, the optimal fin shape, with the highest computed efficie... [more]

Keywords: bore field configuration, borehole heat exchanger, ground-coupled heat pump, preliminary design
This study proposes a simple ground heat exchanger design capacity that is applicable in the schematic-design stage for several configurations used for borehole heat exchangers (BHEs). Three configurations—single, compact, and irregular types—were selected, and the heat transfer rate per unit BHE was calculated considering heat interference. In a case study with a typical configuration and general range of ground thermal conductivity, the BHE heat transfer rate of the compact configuration decreased owing to heat interference as the number of BHEs increased. However, with respect to the irregular configuration, the heat transfer rate increased as the same number increased. This was attributed to the relatively large increment rate of the distance between the boreholes in the irregular configurations, making the heat recovery factor more dominant than the heat interference. The results show that the average heat transfer rate values per BHE applicable to each configuration type in the s... [more]

The SD107 gel system developed has good oil−water phase selective gelation and oil−water phase selective blocking properties. The static gel-forming experiment results showed that the gel water shutoff system formulated with oilfield reinjection water (oil content < 0.05%) has a viscosity of 200 mPa·s after gelation, and the gel water plugging system formulated with oilfield produced fluid (oil content ≥ 20.0%) had a viscosity of 26 mPa·s after gelation. Results of the core physical simulation experiment indicated that the enhanced recovery rate was the highest (34.6%) when the resistance ratio of the high-low permeability core was about 10.0 after plugging. As per the fluid volume (Q) of the oil well to be blocked, the maximum production pressure difference (∆P) was predicted, and on the basis of economic output, the resistance of the oil section, the resistance of the high water cut section, and the resistance of the water outlet section after plugging was used to calculate the pl... Keywords: ammonia pretreatment, anaerobic digestion, aqueous ammonia soaking, biogas, continuous anaerobic digestion, CSTR, manure, manure fibers, methane, Technoeconomic Analysis
Swine manure mono-digestion results in relatively low methane productivity due to the low degradation rate of its solid fraction (manure fibers), and due to the high ammonia and water content. The aqueous ammonia soaking (AAS) pretreatment of manure fibers has been proposed for overcoming these limitations. In this study, continuous anaerobic digestion (AD) of manure mixed with optimally AAS-treated manure fibers was compared to the AD of manure mixed with untreated manure fibers. Due to lab-scale pumping restrictions, the ratio of AAS-optimally treated manure fibers to manure was only 1/3 on a total solids (TS) basis. However, the biogas productivity and methane yield were improved by 17% and 38%, respectively, also confirming the predictions from a simplified 1st order hydrolysis model based on batch experiments. Furthermore, an improved reduction efficiency of major organic components was observed for the digester processing AAS-treated manure fibers compared to the non-treated one... [more]
