Research on the Influence of Euro VI Diesel Engine Assembly Consistency on NOx Emissions
Wei Yan, Tengyao Dou, Jinbo Wang, Na Mei, Guoxiang Li
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: assembly consistency, diesel engine, NOx emissions, numerical simulation
The assembly consistency of a diesel engine will affect its nitrogen oxides (NOx) emission variation. In order to improve the NOx emissions of diesel engines, a study was carried out based on the assembly tolerance variation of the diesel engine’s combustion system. Firstly, a diesel engine which meets the Euro VI standards together with the experimental data is obtained. The mesh model and combustion model of the engine combustion system are built in the Converge software (version 2.4, Tecplot, Bellevue, DC, USA), and the experimental data is used to calibrate the combustion model obtained in the Converge software. Then, the four-factor and three-level orthogonal simulation experiments are carried out on the dimension parameters that include nozzle extension height, throat diameter, shrinkage diameter and combustion chamber depth. Through mathematical analysis on the experimental data, the results show that the variation of nozzle extension height and combustion chamber depth have a s... [more]

Jing Chen, Chenghui Zhang, Ke Li, Yuedong Zhan, Bo Sun
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: adaptive control, intelligent optimizing algorithm, membrane, pressure difference, proton exchange membrane fuel cell
This paper addresses the issues of nonlinearity and coupling between anode pressure and cathode pressure in proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) gas supply systems. A fuzzy adaptive PI decoupling control strategy with an improved advanced genetic algorithm (AGA) is proposed. This AGA s utilized to optimize the PI parameters offline, and the fuzzy adaptive algorithm s used to adjust the PI parameters dynamically online to achieve the approximate decoupling control of the PEMFC gas supply system. According to the proposed dynamic model, the PEMFC gas supply system with the fuzzy−AGA−PI decoupling control method was simulated for comparison. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed control system can reduce the pressure difference more efficiently with the classical control method under different load changes.

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: changeover operating method, field test, hybrid geothermal heat pump system, performance prediction
The installation and operation of geothermal systems increased due to the expectation of good cooling and heating performance due to stable heat source temperatures. In actual geothermal system operations, heat source temperature rises or falls due to an imbalance of heating and cooling energy usage. Problems of source side temperature result in reduced geothermal system performance. The purpose of this study is to develop hybrid geothermal system operation technology to stabilize temperature and improve system performance by utilizing auxiliary heat source system. The auxiliary heat source system is operated by comparing the performance when operating the geothermal heat pump system alone and the performance when operating the hybrid geothermal heat pump system. The performance of a hybrid geothermal system is determined by the circulating water temperature of the geothermal system and the circulating water temperature of the auxiliary heat source system. Hybrid geothermal heat pump s... [more]
Impact of Passive Cooling on Thermal Comfort in a Single-Family Building for Current and Future Climate Conditions
Krzysztof Grygierek, Izabela Sarna
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: building simulation, climate change, EnergyPlus, passive cooling, thermal comfort
Today, there is a great deal of emphasis on reducing energy use in buildings for both economic and environmental reasons. Investors strongly encourage the insulating of buildings. Buildings without cooling systems can lead to a deterioration in thermal comfort, even in transitional climate areas. In this article, the effectiveness of natural ventilation in a passive cooling building is analyzed. Two options are considered: cooling with external air supplied to the building by fans, or by opening windows (automatically or by residents). In both cases, fuzzy controllers for the cooling time and supply airflow control are proposed and optimized. The analysis refers to a typical Polish single-family building. Simulations are made with the use of the EnergyPlus program, and the model is validated based on indoor temperature measurement. The calculations were carried out for different climate data: standard and future (warmed) weather data. Research has shown that cooling with external air c... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: diesel engine, exhaust gas recirculation, nonlinear active disturbance rejection controller, variable geometry turbine
In this paper, a nonlinear active disturbance rejection control (NLADRC) strategy based on nonlinear extended state observer (NLESO) is proposed to solve the unmodeled dynamics, coupling and disturbance due to change of working point in the variable geometry turbine (VGT) and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system, so as to achieve accurate control of intake manifold pressure and mass air flow in a diesel engine. To achieve decoupling, the double-input double-output (DIDO) VGT-EGR system is decomposed into two single-input single-output (SISO) subsystems, and each subsystem has a separate nonlinear active disturbance rejection controller. At the same time, the convergence proof of the designed NLESO is also given theoretically. Finally, the NLADRC controller is compared with linear active disturbance rejection controller and proportional−integral−derivative (PID) controller. Through simulation, it is indicated that the proposed NLADRC controller has better transient response performanc... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Machine Learning, online forecast, PV forecast, random forests, real-life implementation, statistical methods
The goal of the paper is to develop an online forecasting procedure to be adopted within the H2020 InteGRIDy project, where the main objective is to use the photovoltaic (PV) forecast for optimizing the configuration of a distribution network (DN). Real-time measurements are obtained and saved for nine photovoltaic plants in a database, together with numerical weather predictions supplied from a commercial weather forecasting service. Adopting several error metrics as a performance index, as well as a historical data set for one of the plants on the DN, a preliminary analysis is performed investigating multiple statistical methods, with the objective of finding the most suitable one in terms of accuracy and computational effort. Hourly forecasts are performed each 6 h, for a horizon of 72 h. Having found the random forest method as the most suitable one, further hyper-parameter tuning of the algorithm was performed to improve performance. Optimal results with respect to normalized root... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: bioenergy, harvesting loss, oil crops, work performance
Camelina is a low input crop than can be cultivated in rotation with cereals to provide vegetable oil suitable for bioenergy production, industrial applications and even as source of food for livestock. At large scale farming, camelina seeds are currently harvested using a combine harvester, equipped with a cereal header, but the literature still lacks the knowledge of the performance of the machine, the harvesting cost and the related loss of seeds. The present study aims to fulfill that gap by reporting the results obtained from an ad hoc harvest field test. Camelina seed yield was 0.95 Mg ha−1 which accounted for the 18.60% of the total above ground biomass. Theoretical field capacity, effective field capacity and field efficiency were 3.38 ha h−1, 3.17 ha h−1 and 93.7% respectively, albeit the seed loss was 80.1 kg ha−1 FM (7.82% w/w of the potential seed yield). The presence of material other than grain was rather high, 31.77% w/w, which implies a second step of cleaning to avoid... [more]
A Single Scalable LSTM Model for Short-Term Forecasting of Massive Electricity Time Series
Andrés M. Alonso, Francisco J. Nogales, Carlos Ruiz
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: disaggregated time series, load forecasting, neural networks, smart meters
Most electricity systems worldwide are deploying advanced metering infrastructures to collect relevant operational data. In particular, smart meters allow tracking electricity load consumption at a very disaggregated level and at high frequency rates. This data opens the possibility of developing new forecasting models with a potential positive impact on electricity systems. We present a general methodology that can process and forecast many smart-meter time series. Instead of using traditional and univariate approaches, we develop a single but complex recurrent neural-network model with long short-term memory that can capture individual consumption patterns and consumptions from different households. The resulting model can accurately predict future loads (short-term) of individual consumers, even if these were not included in the original training set. This entails a great potential for large-scale applications as once the single network is trained, accurate individual forecast for n... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: online maximum torque per current, optimal control, permanent-magnet synchronous machine, predictive control, torque ripple minimization, trajectory control
This paper presents an extended predictive trajectory control scheme combined with an inner torque ripple minimization considering the current-, flux-linkage-, and voltage-planes of permanent magnet synchronous machines. The extension of a fundamental machine model with flux-linkage harmonics allows the calculation of the inner torque ripple and enables its minimization. For this, the control is divided in two cases: (1) The dynamic operation or large signal behavior which uses the maximal torque gradient for the trajectory strategy during each control period for fastest dynamic operation, and (2) The stationary operation or small signal behavior, utilizing a real time capable polynomial approximation of the rotor position dependent torque hyperbolas (iso-torque curves) of permanent magnet synchronous machines for the ideal torque to current reference values. Since dynamic and steady-state operation is covered, torque to current look-up tables, such as maximum torque per ampere (MTPA)/... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: environmental impact assessment, hydrodynamic model, tidal energy, tidal farm
The development of tidal energy in Australia is still a challenge with few studies performed on the characterisation of the resource, due to the difficulty to acquire data and uncertainties about the influence of this anthropogenic activity on the marine environment. Changes in flow could lead to alterations in sediment transport and have further influence on the marine habitat. A case study in a promising area, Banks Strait (Australia), was created using high resolution 2D and 3D models validated against in situ data to investigate changes to hydrodynamic conditions with two scenarios of tidal farms (100 and 300 turbines). Comparison between 2D and 3D is performed to find the best compromise between model accuracy and computational time for preliminary assessment. Changes to current speed and bed shear stress over a 35 day period were found to be localised around the tidal farms and did not extent more than 7 km from the farm (300 turbines) for both 2D and 3D. The results showed that... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: decommissioning, dry storage system, neutron activation, radioactive waste management, spent nuclear fuel
In order to estimate the radiological characteristics of disused dry storage systems for spent nuclear fuel, a stepwise framework to calculate neutron sources (ORIGEN-ARP), incident neutron flux and reaction rate (MCNPX), effective cross-section (hand calculation), and residual activity (ORIGEN-2) was established. Applicability of the framework was demonstrated by comparing the residual activity of a commercialized storage system, HI-STORM 100, listed in the safety analysis report and calculated in this study. For a reference case assuming an impurity-free storage system, the modified effective cross-sections were theoretically interpreted and the need for managing disused components as a radioactive waste for at least four years was demonstrated. Sensitivity analyses showed that the higher burnup induces the higher residual radioactivity, and the impurity 59Co may extend the minimum decay-in-storage period up to 51 years within the reported range of 59Co content in stainless steel. April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: core–shell, metal oxide, oxygen carrier, perovskite, reverse water–gas shift chemical looping (RWGS-CL)
Reverse water−gas shift chemical looping (RWGS-CL) offers a promising means of converting the greenhouse gas of CO2 to CO because of its relatively low operating temperatures and high CO selectivity without any side product. This paper introduces a core−shell structured oxygen carrier for RWGS-CL. The prepared oxygen carrier consists of a metal oxide core and perovskite shell, which was confirmed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS), XPS, and high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) measurements. The perovskite-structured shell of the prepared oxygen carrier facilitates the formation and consumption of oxygen defects in the metal oxide core during H2-CO2 redox looping cycles. As a result, amounts of CO produced per unit weight of the core−shell structured oxygen carriers were higher than that of a simple perovskite oxygen carrier. Of the metal oxide cores tested, CeO2, NiO, Co3O4, and Co3O4-NiO, La0.75Sr0.25FeO3-encapsulat... [more]
The Impact of Implied Volatility Fluctuations on Vertical Spread Option Strategies: The Case of WTI Crude Oil Market
Bartosz Łamasz, Natalia Iwaszczuk
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: crude oil price risk, implied volatility, vertical spread option strategies
This paper aims to analyze the impact of implied volatility on the costs, break-even points (BEPs), and the final results of the vertical spread option strategies (vertical spreads). We considered two main groups of vertical spreads: with limited and unlimited profits. The strategy with limited profits was divided into net credit spread and net debit spread. The analysis takes into account West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil options listed on New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX) from 17 November 2008 to 15 April 2020. Our findings suggest that the unlimited vertical spreads were executed with profits less frequently than the limited vertical spreads in each of the considered categories of implied volatility. Nonetheless, the advantage of unlimited strategies was observed for substantial oil price movements (above 10%) when the rates of return on these strategies were higher than for limited strategies. With small price movements (lower than 5%), the net credit spread strategies wer... [more]

Subject: Other
Keywords: brushless direct current motor with permanent magnet (BLDCM), delta, fault states, FFT, neutral-point voltage, open circuit (OC), star, star–delta, winding configurations
In this study, tests were carried out on a brushless permanent magnet DC motor with different winding configurations. Three configurations were compared: star, delta and combined star−delta. A mathematical model was constructed for the motor, taking into account the different winding configurations. An analysis of the operation of the motor in the different configurations was performed, based on numerical calculations. The use of different winding configurations affects the properties of the motor. This is significant in the case of the occurrence of various fault states. Based on numerical calculations, an analysis of an open-circuit fault in one of the phases of the motor was performed. Fast Fourier Transform—FFT analysis of the artificial neutral-point voltage was used for the detection of fault states. The results were verified by tests carried out under laboratory conditions. It was shown that the winding configuration has an impact on the behaviour of the motor in the case of an... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: AC microgrid, adaptive protection, IEC 61850 GOOSE protocol, substation automation
The IEC 61850 communication standard is getting popular for application in electric power substation automation. This paper focuses on the potential application of the IEC 61850 generic object-oriented substation event (GOOSE) protocol in the AC microgrid for adaptive protection. The focus of the paper is to utilize the existing low-voltage ride through characteristic of distributed generators (DGs) with a reactive power supply during faults and communication between intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) at different locations for adaptive overcurrent protection. The adaptive overcurrent IEDs detect the faults with two different preplanned settings groups: lower settings for the islanded mode and higher settings for the grid-connected mode considering limited fault contributions from the converter-based DGs. Setting groups are changed to lower values quickly using the circuit breaker status signal (XCBR) after loss-of-mains, loss-of-DG or islanding is detected. The methods of fault det... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cable rating, electric cables, finite difference method, finite element method, harmonic distortion, heat transfer, probabilistic models, thermal model
The conceptual assessment of the rating conditions of power cables was addressed over one century ago, with theories based on the physical and heat transfer properties of the power cable installed in a given medium. During the years, the evolution of the computational methods and technologies has made more powerful means for executing the calculations available. More detailed configurations have been analysed, also moving from the steady-state to dynamic rating assessment. The research is in progress, with recent advances obtained on both advanced models, extensive calculations from 2D and 3D finite element methods, simplified approaches aimed at reducing the computational burden, and dedicated solutions for specific types of cables and applications. This paper provides a general overview that links the fundamental concepts of heat transfer for the calculation of cable rating to the advanced solutions that have emerged in the last years.
Performance Evaluation of Energy Research Projects Using DEA Super-Efficiency
Sungsig Bang
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: data envelopment analysis, energy research project, performance evaluation, skewing problem, super-efficiency
This study proposes super efficiency (SE) as an efficient analytical method for evaluating the performance of energy research projects. Because the SE method is based on data envelopment analysis (DEA), it is free from the difficulty of weighting output, allows for the use of variables with diverse standards of measurement, and is capable of providing ranking information that regular DEA (CCR, BCC) analysis techniques cannot. To analyze the feasibility of the DEA-SE method, an efficiency evaluation was performed for energy research projects using both the weighting method as an existing method and the SE method. When the results were compared and analyzed, skewing toward particular output types was observed in the weighting method, owing to problems inherent in the method itself and in the weighting of subordinate variables that make up the total performance score. Therefore, adopting DEA-SE will redress the known problems of the weighting method by minimizing the problems of weighting... [more]
Neural Network-Based Supplementary Frequency Controller for a DFIG Wind Farm
Ting-Hsuan Chien, Yu-Chuan Huang, Yuan-Yih Hsu
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: artificial neural network (ANN), doubly fed induction generator (DFIG), frequency control, wind generation
An artificial neural network (ANN)-based supplementary frequency controller is designed for a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) wind farm in a local power system. Since the optimal controller gain that gives highest the frequency nadir or lowest peak frequency is a complicated nonlinear function of load disturbance and system variables, it is not easy to use analytical methods to derive the optimal gain. The optimal gain can be reached through an exhaustive search method. However, the exhaustive search method is not suitable for online applications, since it takes a long time to perform a great number of simulations. In this work, an ANN that uses load disturbance, wind penetration, and wind speed as the inputs and the desired controller gain as the output is proposed. Once trained by a proper set of training patterns, the ANN can be employed to yield the desired gain in a very efficient manner, even when the operating condition is not included in the training set. Therefore, the p... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: energy management, harbor, microgrid, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, seaport, sizing, storage, sustainable development
Energy efficiency and low-carbon energy systems are increasingly taken into account in seaports, due to climate change challenges and the evolution of environmental regulations. Thus, technological breakthroughs must be brought to numerous systems in harbors, such as harbor cranes, seaport vehicles, or the power supply of berthed vessels. These aspects may require the establishment of a microgrid in the harbor area. Microgrids have been subjected to a wide development on the mainland and islands, mostly for domestic loads. However, these are still scarce in harbor areas. Their development in such places faces several challenges, such as high power requirements, monitoring and management of a wide range of loads, energy policy framework, etc. Moreover, the establishment of a microgrid involves a study of sizing and of energy management, to avoid prohibitive costs and to verify load requirements. This paper provides a literature survey related to the development of microgrids in seaport... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: active power management, distribution networks, mathematical programming, small scale distributed generation
High penetration of small-scale distributed energy sources into the distribution network increase negative impacts related to power quality causing adverse conditions. This paper presents a mathematical model that maximizes distribution network hosting capacity through optimal distributed generation capacity allocation and control and grid reconfiguration. In addition to this, the model includes on-load tap changer control for stabilization of grid voltage conditions primarily in grid operating conditions related to voltage rise problems, which can limit grid hosting capacity. Moreover, the objective function allows the possibility of energy transfer between distribution and transmission grids. The proposed model considers alternative grid connection points for distributed generation and determines optimal connection points as well as install capacity while considering network operating limits. The model is cast as a multiperiod second-order cone linear program and involves aspects of... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: ammonia, burst test, finite element method, impact test, mobility vehicle, type-IV pressure vessel
Hydrogen has attracted global attention as a clean secondary energy source and has numerous possible applications, including fuel for vehicles. To store the hydrogen effectively, ammonia is considered promising due to high hydrogen density, stability, and total energy efficiency. Adopting ammonia as a fuel in vehicles requires a proper fuel tank design to fulfill the required volumetric content and safety standards, without neglecting the economic objectives. In general, a type-IV pressure vessel is utilized as a fuel tank because it is the lightest one, compared to other types of pressure vessel. This paper focuses on the effort to develop a lightweight type-IV ammonia pressure vessel designed for mobility vehicles. The material combination (liner and composite) and composite stacking sequence are analyzed for both burst and impact tests by using a finite element method. Two polymer materials of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polypropylene (PP) are evaluated as the liner conside... [more]

Keywords: biocrude, economic efficiency, microalgae, oxidation ditch, wastewater treatment
A comparative evaluation of economic efficiency was performed for native polyculture microalgae oil production in an oxidation ditch (OD) process wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). A cost function was developed for the process. The operational cost per 1 m3 of wastewater (w.w.) was 1.34 $/m3-w.w. in the existing scenario, 1.29 $/m3-w.w. in algal scenario A (no cost for CO2 and waste heat) and 1.36 $/m3-w.w. in algal scenario B (no cost for CO2). The conditions were set as follows: hydraulic retention time (HRT): 4 days, microalgal productivity: 0.148 g/L and daily treatment volume: 81.6 m3-w.w./d. The cost differences were related to the increase in polymer flocculants for algae separation (+0.23 $/m3-w.w), carbon credits from CO2 absorption (−0.01 $/m3-w.w), the sales of biocrude (−0.04 $/m3-w.w) and sludge disposal (−0.18 $/m3-w.w). Hence, the introduction of the algae scenario was the same cost-effective as the existing scenario. Microalgae oil production in an OD process WWTP can s... [more]
