Resource and Load Compatibility Assessment of Wind Energy Offshore of Humboldt County, California
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: floating platform, generation, load, losses, model, offshore wind, power, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, transmission, turbine
Floating offshore wind is being considered in northern California as indicated by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management’s issuance of a lease consideration in the Humboldt Call Area. Humboldt County offers access to this enormous resource, but local electric load and transmission are limited. The potential impacts of offshore wind generators at three different scales were studied using a regional grid model of Humboldt County. Offshore wind generation was calculated using modeled wind speed data and 12-MW turbine specifications and integrated with projected load and historical generation. Offshore wind farms deployed in the Humboldt Call Area achieve annual capacity factors between 45% and 54% after losses and maintenance. Power output is variable between and within seasons, with full power output 30% of the time and no output approximately 20% of the time. Electricity from a 48-MW wind farm provides 22% of regional load with limited exports. A 144-MW wind farm serves 38% of local load... [more]

Diesel Engine Performance, Emissions and Combustion Characteristics of Biodiesel and Its Blends Derived from Catalytic Pyrolysis of Waste Cooking Oil
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biodiesel, combustion characteristics, emissions, pyrolysis, waste cooking oil (WCO)
This paper first describes a slow catalytic pyrolysis process used for synthesizing biodiesel from waste cooking oil (WCO) as a feedstock. The influence of variations in the catalyst type (sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide), and catalyst concentration (0.5, 1.0, 3.0, 5.0, 7.0 and 10.0% by weight) on both the pyrolysis temperature range and biodiesel yield were investigated. The results suggested that sodium hydroxide (NaOH) was more effective than potassium hydroxide (KOH) as catalysts and that the highest yield (around 70 wt.%) was observed for a NaOH concentration of about 1 wt.% The resultant pyrolysis temperature range was also significantly lower for NaOH catalyst, thus suggesting overall lower energy consumption. Compared to conventional diesel, the synthesized biodiesel exhibited relatively similar physical properties and calorific value. The biodiesel was subsequently blended with diesel fuel in different blend ratios of 0, 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100% by volume of biodiesel... [more]

Time and Cost Efficient Cloud Resource Allocation for Real-Time Data-Intensive Smart Systems
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: cloud computing, data-intensive smart application, real-time systems, resource allocation, smart grid
Cloud computing is the de facto platform for deploying resource- and data-intensive real-time applications due to the collaboration of large scale resources operating in cross-administrative domains. For example, real-time systems are generated by smart devices (e.g., sensors in smart homes that monitor surroundings in real-time, security cameras that produce video streams in real-time, cloud gaming, social media streams, etc.). Such low-end devices form a microgrid which has low computational and storage capacity and hence offload data unto the cloud for processing. Cloud computing still lacks mature time-oriented scheduling and resource allocation strategies which thoroughly deliberate stringent QoS. Traditional approaches are sufficient only when applications have real-time and data constraints, and cloud storage resources are located with computational resources where the data are locally available for task execution. Such approaches mainly focus on resource provision and latency,... [more]

Utilization of Boiler Slag from Pulverized-Coal-Combustion Power Plants in China for Manufacturing Acoustic Materials
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: acoustic barrier, boiler slag, leachable potential, PCC power plant, sound absorption coefficients
The potential utilization of boiler slag generated in large amounts from pulverized-coal-combustion (PCC) power plants has recently drawn much attention due to the serious problems caused to ecosystems. In order to make maximal use of the boiler slag and reduce the environmental risk it poses, this study focused on manufacturing acoustic materials using boiler slag from Chinese PCC power plants. Three promising acoustic materials were successfully manufactured from up to 80% boiler slag with different grain sizes, with the addition of 20% Portland cement. The density and compressive strength of the products were inversely proportional and the sound absorption coefficient was positively proportional to the grain size of the boiler slag. The best sound absorption coefficient was obtained in products made from the coarsest fraction of the boiler slag (MS-C). Nonetheless, all the boiler-slag-based acoustic products still demonstrated compressive strength and densities comparable to those o... [more]

Multi-Objective Optimization of the Halbach Array Permanent Magnet Spherical Motor Based on Support Vector Machine
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: air-gap magnetic flux density, GS algorithm, Halbach array PMSM, PSO, SVM
The fundamental harmonic amplitude and waveform distortion rate of the air-gap flux density directly affect the performance of a permanent magnet spherical motor (PMSM). Therefore, in the paper, the axial air-gap magnetic field including the end leakage of the Halbach array PMSM is analyzed and optimized. In order to reduce the calculation time of the objective function, the air gap magnetic field model adopts a non-linear regression model based on support vector machine (SVM). At the same time, the improved grid search (GS) algorithm is used to optimize the parameters of SVM model, which improves the efficiency and accuracy of parameter optimization. Considering the influence of moment of inertia on the dynamic response of the motor, the moment of inertia of the PMSM is calculated. This paper takes the air gap magnetic density fundamental wave amplitude, waveform distortion rate and rotor moment of inertia as the optimization objectives. The particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm... [more]

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: advanced control logic, artificial neural network, efficiency, flexibility, gas turbine, ramp rate
In recent years, the importance of operational flexibility has increased for gas turbines that can stably operate under various operation conditions. This study proposes advanced control logic using black box models based on an artificial neural network. The goals are to enhance the operational flexibility by increasing the ramp rate and to enhance the operational stability by overcoming the limitation of conventional schedule-based control. By applying the advanced control logic, the turbine inlet temperature (TIT) and turbine exhaust temperature (TET) can be maintained at the optimal values, resulting in efficiency improvement by 0.35%. Furthermore, the maximum deviation of the rotational speed was reduced from 0.22% to 0.061%, and the maximum variations of TIT and TET were reduced by 15−20 °C during the fluctuation of the gas turbine’s power output. In conclusion, high-efficiency operation and a reduction in the degradation of the high-temperature parts can be expected through optim... [more]

Effect on the Thermal Properties of Mortar Blocks by Using Recycled Glass and Its Application for Social Dwellings
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: adaptive comfort, crushed glass, energy demand, periodic thermal transmittance, social housing
Including recycled waste material in cement mixes, as substitutes for natural aggregates, has resulted in diverse research projects, normally focused on mechanical capacities. In the case of recycled glass as an aggregate, this provides a noticeable improvement in thermal properties, depending on its dosage. This idea raises possible construction solutions that reduce the environmental impact and improves thermal behavior. For this research, an extended building typology that is susceptible to experiencing the risk of energy poverty has been chosen. The typology is typical for social housing, built using mortar blocks with crushed glass. First, the basic thermophysical properties of the mortars were determined by laboratory tests; after that, the dynamic thermal properties of representative constructive solutions using these mortars were simulated in seven representative climate zones in Chile. An analysis methodology based on periodic thermal transmittance, adaptive comfort levels and... [more]

Simulation of Electric Vehicle Charging Stations Load Profiles in Office Buildings Based on Occupancy Data
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: demand response, electric vehicles, load aggregation, load modeling, load profiling
Transportation vehicles are a large contributor of the carbon dioxide emissions to the atmosphere. Electric Vehicles (EVs) are a promising solution to reduce the CO2 emissions which, however, requires the right electric power production mix for the largest impact. The increase in the electric power consumption caused by the EV charging demand could be matched by the growing share of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) in the power production. EVs are becoming a popular sustainable mean of transportation and the expansion of EV units due to the stochastic nature of charging behavior and increasing share of RES creates additional challenges to the stability in the power systems. Modeling of EV charging fleets allows understanding EV charging capacity and demand response (DR) potential of EV in the power systems. This article focuses on modeling of daily EV charging profiles for buildings with various number of chargers and daily events. The article presents a modeling approach based on the ch... [more]

Improving Municipal Solid Waste Management Strategies of Montréal (Canada) Using Life Cycle Assessment and Optimization of Technology Options
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: cost analysis, energy recovery, life cycle assessment, organic waste
Landfilling of organic waste is still the predominant waste management method in Canada. Data collection and analysis of the waste were done for the case study city of Montréal in Canada. A life cycle assessment was carried out for the current and proposed waste management system using the IWM-2 software. Using life cycle assessment results, a non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm was used to optimize the waste flows. The optimization showed that the current recovery ratio of organic waste of 23% in 2017 could be increased to 100% recovery of food waste. Also, recycling could be doubled, and landfilling halved. The objective functions were minimizing the total energy consumption and CO2eq emissions as well as the total cost in the waste management system. By using a three-objective optimization algorithm, the optimized waste flow for Montréal results in 2% of waste (14.7 kt) to anaerobic digestion (AD), 7% (66.3 kt) to compost, 32% (295 kt) to recycling, 1% (8.5 kt) to incineration,... Power Quality Measurement and Active Harmonic Power in 25 kV 50 Hz AC Railway Systems
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: active power, electric energy meters, harmonic power, power quality analysis, railway electrical networks, traction converter
Railway electrical networks rated at 25 kV 50 Hz are characterised by significant levels of voltage and current harmonics. These frequency components are also time varying in nature due to the movement of trains and changing operational modes. Processing techniques used to evaluate harmonic results, although standardised, are not explicitly designed for railway applications, and the smoothing effect that the standard aggregation algorithms have on the measured results is significant. This paper analyses the application accuracy of standardised power quality (PQ) measurement algorithms, when used to measure and evaluate harmonics in railway electrical networks. A shorter aggregation time interval is proposed for railway power quality measurement instruments, which offers more accurate estimated results and improved tracking of time varying phenomena. Harmonic active power present in railway electrical networks is also evaluated in order to quantify the impact it has on the energy accumu... [more]

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: System Identification
Keywords: containment, hydrogen behavior, MELCOR code, PAR, severe accident, SPARC test facility, spray
A series of experiments were performed in the SPARC (spray-aerosol-recombiner-combustion) test facility to simulate a hydrogen mitigation system with the actuation of a PAR (passive auto-catalytic re-combiner) and spray system. In this study, the SPARC-SPRAY-PAR (SSP1) experiment is chosen to benchmark the MELCOR (a lumped-parameter code for severe accident analysis) predictions against test data. For this purpose, firstly we prepared the base input model of the SPARC test vessel, and tested it by a simple verification problem with well-defined boundary conditions. The implementation of a currently used PAR correlation in MELCOR is shown to be appropriate for the simulation of a PAR actuation experiment. In an SSP1 experiment, the PAR is reacting with hydrogen, and the spray actuation starts as soon as hydrogen injection is complete. The MELCOR simulation well predicts the pressure behavior and the gas flow affected by operating both a PAR and spray system. However, the local hydrogen... [more]

Dispersion Effects of Particulate Lead (Pb) from the Stack of a Lead Battery Recycling Plant
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: AERMOD model, lead battery recycling plant, lead concentrations, X-ray fluorescence (XRF)
The contribution of emissions from the stack of a lead battery recycling plant to atmospheric lead concentrations and, eventually, to the topsoil of the surrounding area, were studied. A Gaussian dispersion model, of the American Meteorological Society/United States Environmental Protection Agency Regulatory Model, (AERMOD) was used to determine atmospheric total suspended particulate lead dispersion, which originated from stack emissions, over the wider study area. Stack emission parameters were obtained from online measurements of the industry control sensors. AERMOD simulated two scenarios for four calendar years, 2015 to 2018, one for the typical stack measured operating conditions and one for the legal limit operating conditions (emissions from the stack set by legislation to 0.5 mg m−3). Deposition fluxes modeled the input of atmospheric total suspended particulate Pb to the topsoil of the area. X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyses were used to determine lead concentrations in the t... Design of an Optimized Thermal Management System for Li-Ion Batteries under Different Discharging Conditions
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cooling techniques, discharge rate, Li-ion battery, liquid cooling, thermal behavior
The design of an optimized thermal management system for Li-ion batteries has challenges because of their stringent operating temperature limit and thermal runaway, which may lead to an explosion. In this paper, an optimized cooling system is proposed for kW scale Li-ion battery stack. A comparative study of the existing cooling systems; air cooling and liquid cooling respectively, has been carried out on three cell stack 70Ah LiFePO4 battery at a high discharging rate of 2C. It has been found that the liquid cooling is more efficient than air cooling as the peak temperature of the battery stack gets reduced by 30.62% using air cooling whereas using the liquid cooling method it gets reduced by 38.40%. The performance of the liquid cooling system can further be improved if the contact area between the coolant and battery stack is increased. Therefore, in this work, an immersion-based liquid cooling system has been designed to ensure the maximum heat dissipation. The battery stack having... [more]

Phase Voltage-Oriented Control of a PMSG Wind Generator for Unity Power Factor Correction
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: phase voltage-oriented control, phase-locked loop, PMSG wind generator, power factor correction
This paper presents the power factor control of a permanent magnet synchronous wind generator (PMSG) wind turbine using a phase voltage-oriented control (PVOC) scheme, which is different from the conventional rotor flux-oriented control (RFOC) method and without using a rotor position sensor or sensorless estimator. The proposed control system is operated in two separately synchronously rotating d-q frames. One is for a phase-locked loop (PLL) and the other is for the PVOC current control loop. A PI controller functioned as a low-pass filter in the PLL loop is designed for extracting the phase voltage angle for the coordinate transformation between the stationary α-β frame and the synchronously rotating d-q frame in the PVOC control loop. The d-q modeling of the PMSG with the three-phase voltage vector aligned on the d-axis is then derived and based on which an another PI controller followed by decoupling control is designed, so that the three-phase currents are in phase with the three... Lithium-Ion Battery SoC Equilibrium: An Artificial Potential Field-Based Method

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: artificial potential field, balance, cooperative control, lithium-ion battery, state-of-charge
Battery balance methods are the key technology to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the energy storage systems. Nevertheless, convenient balance methods experience slow convergence and difficult to adapt to quick charging applications. To solve the problem, in this paper, an artificial potential field-based lithium-ion battery balance method is proposed. Firstly, a cyber-physical model of the battery equalization system is proposed, in which the physical layer models the circuit components and the cyber layer represents the communication topology between the batteries. Then the virtual force function is established by artificial potential field to attract the voltage and state-of-charge of each cell to nominal values. With a feedback control law, the charging current of the battery is reasonably distributed to realize the rapid balance among batteries. The experimental results verify the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method.

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery equalizer circuits, battery management systems, electric vehicles, lithium-ion battery
Electric vehicles (EVs) are an alternative to internal combustion engine (ICE) cars, as they can reduce the environmental impact of transportation. The bottleneck for EVs is the high-voltage battery pack, which utilizes most of the space and increases the weight of the vehicle. Currently, the main challenge for the electronics industry is the cell equalization of the battery pack. This paper gives an overview of the research works related to battery equalizer circuits (BECs) used in EV applications. Several simulations were carried out for the main BEC topologies with the same initial conditions. The results obtained were used to perform a quantitative analysis between these schemes. Moreover, this review highlights important issues, challenges, variables and parameters associated with the battery pack equalizers and provides recommendations for future investigations. We think that this work will lead to an increase in efforts on the development of an advanced BEC for EV applications.

Subject: Process Design
Keywords: heavy oil recovery, improved design criteria, SAGD, slotted liner
Slotted liners are widely used in steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) wells to control sand production and sustain wellbore productivity. The slotted liner can provide desirable performance when appropriately designed. A literature review indicates a limited number of studies that offer design criteria specifically for SAGD wells. Moreover, past criteria seem to neglect some key factors, which may lead to inadequate slot design. This paper proposes a set of graphical design criteria for slotted liners in SAGD production wells, using prepacked sand retention testing (SRT) data. The SRT is designed to incorporate several essential factors that are not present in the past design criteria, such as slot density, steam breakthrough, and particle size distribution (PSD). The proposed design criteria are presented graphically for normal and aggressive conditions, where the aggressive condition accounts for the potential occurrence of the steam breakthrough. To quantify the effect of the selected factors on floor upheaval, this article presents an analysis of results of in situ measurements carried out in three coal mine roadways at 15 measuring stations. These measurements were taken over varying periods of time, between 129 and 758 days. Groundwater and fault zones intersecting the excavations were considered as the key factors that affect floor upheavals. Therefore, the measurement bases were located at local faults and sites of water inflow.
