April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: autoclave steaming, changing operational conditions, dispatching intervention, energy consumption, Energy Efficiency, frozen wooden prisms, veneer production
A methodology for the computation of the thermal energy efficiency of modes for the heat treatment of frozen wooden prisms in an autoclave with saturated water vapor at changing operational conditions has been proposed. The methodology includes computer simulations with two own-coupled unsteady models: one to calculate the 2D temperature distribution in the cross-section of prismatic wood materials during their heat treatment, and the second to determine the heat balance of industrial autoclaves for such wood treatment. Simulations were carried out in order to determine the duration, energy consumption, and thermal efficiency of different modes, caused by changed operational conditions, for the autoclave steaming of frozen beech prisms with industrial parameters in the absence and presence of dispatcher intervention. The influence of nine combinations between the time of dispatcher intervention and the degree of reduction of the constant maximum temperature from the 130 °C of the basic... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: adhesive joint design, composites, experimental analysis, hybrid joint, lightweight wheel, structural analysis, thermal expansion
When it comes to lightweight design of automotive wheels, hybrid designs consisting of a carbon composite wheel rim and a metallic, e.g., aluminum alloy, wheel disc offer significant potential. However, the conventionally used bolted joint between the two parts is complex and requires compromises in lightweight design due to the additional mechanical elements. Within this research, an adhesive joint for a hybrid wheel is developed in order to demonstrate its performance and lightweight potential. The main challenges are the reliable resistance against high structural loads during different load cases, as well as the residual stresses in the joint due to different thermal expansion rates of the composite and aluminum material. The developed joint combines an adhesive bond with a form-fitted geometry while still enabling an assembling process of the wheel disc in rotational direction. In addition, adaptations of the fiber layup in the rim area significantly reduce the thermal residual st... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: chemical industry, esterquat softener, Maciejasz Index (MI), spontaneous combustion, thermal susceptibility
The chemical industry includes a wide range of factories focused on obtaining final products as: (i) plastics; (ii) chemical fibers; (iii) rubber; (iv) perfumery and cosmetic products; and (v) cleaning products. Although the level of safety in the activities and installations of this sector is very high, the use of dangerous substances implies an increased risk of suffering an accident involving the emission of hazardous substances, as well as endangering the safety of workers. In the case of the manufacture of softeners, the presence of isopropanol (C3H8O), and dimethyl sulfate (CH3)2SO4), have been reported to be the accident cause in most of the cases. The European accident database (eMars) reported an accident in which the presence of impurities of nickel (Ni) in the hydrogenated tallow used as raw material for softener production may have increased thermal reactivity and the chances of spontaneous combustion. This paper analyzes the results obtained with the Maciejasz Index (MI) t... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: coagulation and flocculation, ferric chloride, polyaluminium chloride, removal of textile fibers, textile fibers, Wastewater
Synthetic fibers enter wastewater treatment plants together with natural fibers, which may affect treatment efficiency, a fact not considered in previous studies. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the efficiency of the coagulation/flocculation process for the removal of a mixture of textile fibers from different water matrices. Natural and synthetic fibers (100 mg/L; cotton, polyacrylonitrile, and polyamide) were added to a synthetic matrix, surface water and laundry wastewater and subjected to coagulation/flocculation experiments with ferric chloride (FeCl3) and polyaluminum chloride (PACl) under laboratory conditions. In the synthetic matrix, both coagulants were found to be effective, with FeCl3 having a lesser advantage, removing textile fibers almost completely from the water (up to 99% at a concentration of 3.94 mM). In surface water, all dosages had approximately similar high values, with the coagulant resulting in complete removal. In laundry effluent, the... [more]

Keywords: asphaltene inhibitor, asphaltene stability, crude oil, precipitation, SARA
The precipitation of asphaltene and waxes occurs when crude oil characteristics change as a consequence of pressure, temperature variations, and/or chemical modifications, etc. The costs associated with the cleaning of deposition on the production equipment and the loss of profit opportunities can go beyond hundreds of millions of USD. Thus, there is a strong incentive to search for ways to mitigate deposit formation during the crude production process. A light crude bottom hole fluid sample from a deep well with an asphaltene deposition problem was analyzed in the laboratory. Basic data on density, viscosity, bubble point, GOR, and asphaltene onset pressure were measured at a PVT laboratory. Asphaltene characterization, as a prescreening for appropriate inhibitors, has been conducted using asphaltene phase diagrams (APD). The APD generated from two developed software programs in both Matlab and Excel codes were favorably compared with the phase behavior of other oil samples available... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fermentation broth, fouling, membrane cleaning, nanofiltration, pretreatment, purification, separation, sterility, turbidity
Recent findings regarding nanofiltration (NF) have led to indications that it can be successfully used for separation of various biological solutions. As a novelty, this paper is the first to investigate the impact of the feed pretreatment process on the NF membrane performance used for separation of 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PD) fermentation broths. For this purpose, prior to the NF process, the feed was purified by microfiltration (MF) and ultrafiltration (UF) processes. Subsequently, the long-term NF process was carried out with the use of a commercial, flat-sheet, thin-film, polyamide NF270 nanofiltration membrane. Thereinto, to determine the dominant fouling mechanism, Hermia’s model was used. With regards to the pretreatment processes performed, it has been determined that the MF membrane (0.14 µm) provided the reduction in the number of bacteria cells present in the permeate, while the UF membrane (450 Da) allowed obtaining the sterile permeate. Consequently, the NF permeate flux for... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ammonium acetate, fertilizer byproduct, industrial condensate, ion-exchange column, pilot scale
In this study, an industrial biomass-drying wastewater condensate containing > 3200 mg/L NH4+ and >8900 mg/L CH3COO− was treated in ion-exchange columns for the recovery of NH4+. Two commercial resins (CS12GC and CS16GC) were studied on laboratory and pilot scales. CS16GC outperformed CS12GC by achieving better separation at the condensate temperature (60 °C), which was energy-efficient regarding NH4+ removal. K3PO4 was used for regeneration to produce a liquid compound fertilizer containing nutrient elements (N, K, and P) as a byproduct. The N/K ratio in the byproduct was found to be adjustable by varying the operating parameters. Regeneration with 2 mol/L K3PO4 gave a higher regeneration efficiency (97.67% at 3 BV and ~100% at 4 BV). The stability tests performed on a laboratory scale showed that the cyclic runs of the column separation process were steady and repeatable. Based on the outcomes of the laboratory-scale tests, the pilot-scale tests applied a loading volume of 7 BV. The... [more]

Keywords: air conditioning system, clustering, correlation analysis, defrosting operation mode, pattern recognition
Air-conditioning system operation pattern recognition plays an important role in the fault diagnosis and energy saving of the building. Most machine learning methods need labeled data to train the model. However, the difficulty of obtaining labeled data is much greater than that of unlabeled data. Therefore, unsupervised clustering models are proposed to study the operation pattern recognition of the refrigeration, heating and hot water combined air-conditioning (RHHAC) system. Clustering methods selected in this study include K-means, Gaussian mixture model clustering (GMMC) and spectral clustering. Further, correlation analysis is used to eliminate the redundant characteristic variables of the clustering model. The operating data of the RHHAC system are used to evaluate the performance of proposed clustering models. The results show that clustering models, after removing redundant variables by correlation analysis, can also identify the defrosting operation mode. Moreover, for the GM... [more]

Keywords: electrostatic precipitator, nucleation, particulate matter, pollution control, small-scale boiler
This paper investigates the removal efficiency of a honeycomb electrostatic precipitator (ESP) applied to control particulate matter (PM) emissions from a small-scale boiler with combustion lignite and hard coal. The specifics of the precipitation of emissions from small-scale boilers are discussed, and the design principles for relevant ESPs are presented and used. The ion-induced nucleation of sulfuric acid occurred, causing the drastic penetration of 19 nm particles through the ESP. Despite this, the overall collection efficiency was sufficient to meet the EU’s Ecodesign Directive requirements. Back corona was not detected. The optimal ESP performance is defined with further parameters: a current density of 0.5 mA/m2 at an electric field strength of about 2.7 × 105 V/m; a minimal specific collecting area of ESP (SCA) of 60 m2/(m3/s); and Nt-product of 4.5 × 1014 s/m3. Such parameters of ESPs should ensure adequate PM emissions control for any type of boiler with similar emissions ch... [more]

Keywords: characterization, detection, effluent, influent, isolation, microplastics, sludge, wastewater treatment
Since the 1950s, plastic production has skyrocketed. Various environmental and human activities are leading to the formation and accumulation of microplastics (MPs) in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, causing detrimental effects on water, soil, plants, and living creatures. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are one of the primary MP management centers meant to check their entry into the natural systems. However, there are considerable limitations in effectively capturing, detecting, and characterizing these MPs in the inlet and outlet of WWTPs leading to “unaccounted MPs” that are eventually discharged into our ecosystems. In order to assess the holistic picture of the MPs’ distribution in the ecosystems, prevent the release of these omitted MPs into the environment, and formulate regulatory policies, it is vital to develop protocols that can be standardized across the globe to accurately detect and account for MPs in different sample types. This review will cover the details of c... [more]

Keywords: layered kMC simulation, long short-term memory, Machine Learning, Model Predictive Control, Multiscale Modelling, pulp digester
The growing demand for various types of paper highlights the importance of optimizing the kraft pulping process to achieve desired paper properties. This work proposes a novel multiscale model to optimize the kraft pulping process and obtain desired paper properties. The model combines mass and energy balance equations with a layered kinetic Monte Carlo (kMC) algorithm to predict the degradation of wood chips, the depolymerization of cellulose, and the spatio-temporal evolution of the Kappa number and cellulose degree of polymerization (DP). A surrogate LSTM-ANN model is trained on data generated from the multiscale model under different operating conditions, dealing with both time-varying and time-invariant inputs, and an LSTM-ANN-based model predictive controller is designed to achieve desired set-point values of the Kappa number and cellulose DP while considering process constraints. The results show that the LSTM-ANN-based controller is able to drive the process to desired set-poin... [more]

Keywords: benzidine, Congo red, dyes, reduction, toxicity
The use of dyes is widespread across almost all industries. Consequently, these dyes are found in various sources of water and food that humans, animals, and plants consume directly or indirectly. Most of these dyes are comprised of complex aromatic structures that have proven harmful. Congo red dye, a complex aromatic azo dye based on benzidine, is most commonly used in these dyes; its metabolites (benzidine and analogs) can be toxic, but Congo red dye itself is not always harmful. The present review summarizes the toxicity of Congo red dye towards different living forms. Herein, the primary emphasis has been given to the mutagenic, teratogenic, and carcinogenic consequences of Congo red and its metabolites. The mechanisms of azo dyes’ carcinogenicity have also been discussed. This review will undoubtedly be beneficial for researchers to understand the harmful effects of Congo red in genotoxic, teratogenic, mutagenic, and carcinogenic factors.

Keywords: complex fracture networks, data-driven, physics-constrained, shale gas
Shale gas plays an important role in supplementing energy demand and reducing carbon footprint. A precise and effective prediction of shale gas production is important for optimizing completion parameters. This paper established a gated recurrent unit and multilayer perceptron combined neural network (GRU-MLP model) to forecast multistage fractured horizontal shale gas well production. A nondominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA II) was introduced into the model to enable its automatic architectural optimization. In addition, embedded discrete fracture models (EDFM) and a reservoir simulator were used to generate training datasets. Meanwhile, a sensitivity analysis was carried out to find the variable’s importance and support the history matching. The results illustrated that the GRU-MLP model can precisely and efficiently predict the productivity of multistage fractured horizontal shale gas in a rapid and effective manner. Additionally, the model fits better at peak values of sh... [more]

During current times, it is acknowledged that there is the often presence of extreme meteorological phenomena including floods and landslides, due to heavy rains, large wildfires, due to heat or droughts, permafrost melting, etc. At this stage, the world admits that anthropic activities have an important impact on these phenomena and considers that greenhouse gases are at the core of this climate change. The most common greenhouse gasses have general formulae COX and/or NOX, and they are released during different energy generating/conversion processes such as electric energy generation from fossil fuels or mechanical energy obtained from by-products of fossil fuels. Once acknowledged, the world’s countries have developed long-term strategies to eliminate gradually the release of these gases directly into Earth’s atmosphere. E.g., the EU aims to be climate-neutral by 2050; i.e., its economy will have net-zero greenhouse gas emissions. For this to happen, different effective methodologie... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: computational fluid dynamics (CFD), flow field characteristics, high-speed gear, negative pressure regulation, windage power loss
Windage power loss plays a leading role in the total power loss of high-speed gears, which seriously affects the transmission efficiency of gear systems and leads to high energy consumption. This paper proposes a negative pressure regulation method to reduce windage power loss. Based on the computational fluid dynamics theory, the flow field distribution and windage power loss in the gearbox under different negative pressure conditions are studied, and the effect of the negative pressure environment and speed on the windage power loss is obtained. In order to further save calculation costs, an optimization algorithm of the BP neural network based on a genetic algorithm is proposed to effectively predict the windage power loss. The results show that the high-speed airflow near the tooth’s surface will produce a large pressure moment, which is the main cause of wind resistance loss. The windage power loss increases with the increase in the negative pressure or speed of the gearbox, but t... [more]

Keywords: data dimension reduction, Machine Learning, structure optimization, topology design
Topology optimization results are highly dependent on the given design constraints and boundary conditions. Moreover, small changes in initial design conditions can result in different topological configurations, which makes topology optimization time-consuming in a given design constraint domain and inefficient in structural design. To address this problem, a data-driven real-time topology optimization framework and method coupled with machine learning by using a principal component analysis algorithm combined with a feedforward neural network are developed in this paper. Meanwhile, through the offline training, the mapping relationship between initial design conditions and topology optimization results is obtained. From this mapping, we estimate the optimal topologies for novel loading configurations. Numerical examples display that the online prediction results are consistent with the results of the topology optimization method. Furthermore, the network parameters are calibrated, an... [more]

Keywords: CO2 foam fracturing, foam half-life, molecular dynamics, surfactant, viscosity
Temperature changes in CO2 foam-fracturing construction can easily affect surfactant foam stability. To investigate the effect of temperature on the foam stability of different types of surfactants, this study measured the foam half-life and viscosity of four typical surfactants, CTAB, LAS-30, HSB1214, and TX-10, using a novel self-designed and built foam performance measurement device. The effects of temperature on foam half-life and viscosity were studied. The results show that as the temperature increased, the half-life shortened, and the viscosity of the liquid phase decreased, which led to a decrease in foam stability. Moreover, using Materials Studio, a type of molecular simulation software, an interfacial model of the foam film was constructed to calculate the IFE and the self-diffusion coefficient of water molecules at 300 ps after the equilibrium of the foam system to investigate the mechanism of temperature influence on the stability of the foam. The results show that, for CT... [more]

Keywords: AFEKF, ARWLS, battery equivalent model, capacity correction, SOC
Accuracy of battery charge status (SOC) estimation plays a significant role in the management of electric vehicle power batteries. However, recently, abrupt changes from SOC data often occurs in the actual operation of electric vehicles and some errors appear in the establishment of battery models and noise models, which give rise to the poorly adaptive and robust performance of traditional algorithms in the process of SOC estimation. The fusion algorithm proposed in this paper can effectively improve the accuracy of models and SOC estimation of lithium-ion batteries. Based on the second-order R-C network model, this method optimizes the accuracy of parameter identification by adopting the adaptive recursive weighted least square algorithm (ARWLS). In addition, the adaptive fading extended Kalman filter algorithm (AFEKF) is applied to estimate the SOC of lithium-ion batteries. Additionally, via introducing a fading factor, the optimal Kalman gain is updated in real-time, which can redu... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Biomass, gasification, process design, supercritical water
The influence of process water recycling during the Supercritical Water Gasification (SCWG) of dry biomasses was investigated. Dry biomass has to be diluted with water to a dry matter content of approximately 10 wt.% to gasify it in the process of supercritical water gasification. The treatment of wastewater in the SCWG process is cost intensive due to organic contaminants; therefore, the recycling of the process effluent is attractive. Salt separation is needed to avoid accumulation of salts in the effluents, since salts enhance corrosion rates and might cause blocking of the flow when the effluent is recycled. The grass Reed Canary Grass and grapevines were gasified. The recycling of the process effluent did not influence the composition of the product gas. In both cases the carbon efficiency decreased by 4% when wastewater was used to dilute the biomass. An increase in organic carbon and potassium in the reactor effluent was observed after gasification of the biomass with recycled p... [more]
