Shabarish Shankaran, Tamilarasan Karuppiah, Rajesh Banu Jeyakumar, Godvin Sharmila Vincent
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: biohydrogen, liquefied organics, macroalgae, sonic alkali liquefaction
In this study, a combined pretreatment method of sonication and alkali (KOH) liquefaction (SAL) was used to increase the production of biohydrogen from macroalgae (Chaetomorpha antennina) in an energy-efficient manner. Sonication liquefaction (SL) was accomplished by varying the sonic intensities from 10% to 70% and the pretreatment time from 5 to 60 min. The ideal liquefaction conditions in SL were determined to be 50% for sonic intensity, and 30 min of pretreatment time which produces liquefied organics (LO) release of 2650 mg/L. By adjusting the pH of the alkali (KOH) from 8 to 12, SAL was carried out under SL optimal conditions. With a liquefaction efficiency of 24.61% and LO release of 3200 mg/L, pH 11 was the best for effective macroalgal liquefaction in SAL. SAL (4500 kJ/kg TS) consumed less ultrasonic specific energy (USE) than SL (9000 kJ/kg TS). More VFA was produced in SAL (2160 mg/L) than SL (1070 mg/L). Compared to SL (120 mL H2/g COD/0.005 moles of H2/g COD), SAL produced... [more]

April 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, performance analysis, Savonius rotor, wind tree
Large wind turbines of the horizontal axis are commonly used to gather wind energy; however, their performance is found to be constrained in conditions of erratic and low-speed wind flow. In contrast, low wind conditions—which are typically present in dense urban areas—are found to favour vertical axis wind turbines (VAWT). These turbines have a simple design, are inexpensive and quiet, and are discovered to be better in low wind situations. In this research, we have chosen wind tree applications to absorb the most available wind energy. The new Aeroleaf Savonius Wind Turbine was developed numerically and a computational fluid dynamics simulation was performed on this new type of Savonius tree to predict its performance. The results indicated that the system could accept wind from any direction and could start rotating as soon as the site had a cut in wind speed of 3.3 m/s. The rotor speed increased by 10.4% from 5.5 to 6.3 m/s wind speed at 0.45 tip speed ratio. The tip speed ratio is... [more]

Keywords: energy harvesting, piezoelectric transducers, solar roadways, vehicle transit, vibrations
The roads we travel daily are exposed to several energy sources (mechanical load, solar radiation, heat, air movement, etc.), which can be exploited to make common systems and apparatus for roadways (i.e., lighting, video surveillance, and traffic monitoring systems) energetically autonomous. For decades, research groups have developed many technologies able to scavenge energy from the said sources related to roadways: electromagnetism, piezoelectric and triboelectric harvesters for the cars’ stress and vibrations, photovoltaic modules for sunlight, thermoelectric solutions and pyroelectric materials for heat and wind turbines optimized for low-speed winds, such as the ones produced by moving vehicles. Thus, this paper explores the existing technologies for scavenging energy from sources available on roadways, both natural and related to vehicular transit. At first, to contextualize them within the application scenario, the available energy sources and transduction mechanisms were iden... [more]

Keywords: alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM), distributed optimization, energy management, hardware-in-loop (HIL), networked microgrids
For the cooperative operation of networked microgrids, a distributed energy management considering network operational objectives and constraints is proposed in this work. Considering various ownership and privacy requirements of microgrids, utility directly interfaced distributed energy resources (DERs) and demand response, a distributed optimization is proposed for obtaining optimal network operational objectives with constraints satisfied through iteratively updated price signals. The alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) algorithm is utilized to solve the formulated distributed optimization. The proposed distributed energy management provides microgrids, utility-directly interfaced DERs and responsive demands the opportunity of contributing to better network operational objectives while preserving their privacy and autonomy. Results of numerical simulation using a networked microgrids system consisting of several microgrids, utility directly interfaced DERs and respons... [more]

April 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, phase change material, solidification process, triplex tube heat exchanger
The techniques for releasing thermal energy accumulated in periods of high availability to meet the demand in periods of low energy supply contribute to the continuity of the cycles involved in thermodynamic processes. In this context, phase change materials are capable of absorbing and releasing large amounts of energy in relatively short periods of time and under specific operating conditions. However, phase change materials have low thermal conductivity and need to be coupled with high-thermal-conductivity materials so that the heat flux can be intensified and the energy absorption and release times can be controlled. This work aims to numerically study the solidification process of a phase change material inserted into a triplex tube heat exchanger with finned copper walls to intensify the thermal exchange between the phase change material and the cooling heat transfer fluid, water, that will receive the energy accumulated in the material. This work proposes the 3D numerical modeli... [more]

April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: agriculture, agrivoltaics, CdTe, green roofs, photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), semi-transparent PV, solar, thin-film
Agrivoltaics (APV), the co-location of agriculture and photovoltaics (PV), addresses an inherent competition for land usage. Taking the same dual-use concept to the urban landscape, rooftop APV can provide locally grown food in areas of need while providing distributed energy generation. In this multi-year investigation, different APV plots in northern Colorado, USA, were studied for crop metrics, light transmission, air temperature, soil/substrate temperature and moisture. Crops were grown under different solar panel types including opaque silicon and opaque and semi-transparent (ST) thin-film CdTe technologies. Growth conditions were characterized showing generally improved conditions and moderated temperatures under the panels. The ST-CdTe panels had increased photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) compared to both opaque panel types without a significant corresponding increase in temperature.

Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: Bangkok, electric vehicle, energy transition, rooftop PV, urban decarbonization
Realizing urban energy systems with net-zero CO2 emissions by 2050 is a major goal of global societies in building sustainable and livable cities. Developing cities hold a key to meeting this goal, as they will expand rapidly in the next decades with increasing energy demand, potentially associated with rising CO2 emissions and air pollution if fossil fuels continue to be utilized. Therefore, identifying equitable, cost-effective, and deep decarbonization pathways for developing cities is essential. Here, we analyzed Bangkok City, Thailand, using the System Advisor Model (SAM) for techno-economic analysis to evaluate the decarbonization potential of rooftop photovoltaics (PV) integrated with electric vehicles (EVs) as batteries on a city scale. The analyses took into consideration hourly local weather conditions, electricity demand, electricity tariffs, feed-in-tariffs, degradation, declining costs of PV and EV, etc., specific to Bangkok. As the prices of PV and EVs decrease over the n... [more]

April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: Bi doping, Cu2Se, power factor, thermoelectric
The influence of Bi doping on the structural and thermoelectric properties of Cu2Se is presented in this work. Cu2−xBixSe (x = 0.00, 0.004, 0.008, 0.012) samples were prepared using conventional solid-state reaction techniques. According to room temperature XRD results, Cu2−xBixSe samples have a monoclinic crystal structure. Doping Bi to the Cu site acts as a donor, lowering the hole concentration, except for the sample with x = 0.004. The resistivity of the Cu2−xBixSe sample increases with an increase in Bi content. Seebeck coefficient data confirm that the holes are the charge carriers in Cu2−xBixSe samples. At 700 K, the Cu1.988Bi0.012Se sample has the highest power factor of 1474 μWm−1K−2, showing great potential in developing high-performance Cu2Se based thermoelectric materials.

April 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: agriculture 4.0, biogas, photovoltaics, smart grid, unmanned vehicles
Agrivoltaics (Agri-PV, AV)—the joint use of land for the generation of agricultural products and energy—has recently been rapidly gaining popularity, as it can significantly increase income per unit of land area. In a broad sense, AV systems can include converters of solar energy, and also energy from any other local renewable source, including bioenergy. Current approaches to AV represent the evolutionary development of agroecology and integrated PV power supply to the grid, and can result in nearly doubled income per unit area. AV could provide a basis for a revolution in large-scale unmanned precision agriculture and smart farming which will be impossible without on-site power supply, reduction of chemical fertiliser and pesticides, and yield processing on site. These approaches could dramatically change the logistics and the added value production chain in agriculture, and so reduce its carbon footprint. Utilisation of decommissioned solar panels in AV could halve the cost of the t... [more]
Low- and High-Fidelity Aerodynamic Simulations of Box Wing Kites for Airborne Wind Energy Applications
Dylan Eijkelhof, Gabriel Buendía, Roland Schmehl
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: aerodynamics, airborne wind energy, box wing kites, reference model
High aerodynamic efficiency is a key design driver for airborne wind energy systems as it strongly affects the achievable energy output. Conventional fixed-wing systems generally use aerofoils with a high thickness-to-chord ratio to achieve high efficiency and wing loading. The box wing concept suits thinner aerofoils as the load distribution can be changed with a lower wing span and structural reinforcements between the upper and lower wings. This paper presents an open-source toolchain for reliable aerodynamic simulations of parameterized box wing configurations, automating the design, meshing, and simulation setup processes. The aerodynamic tools include the steady 3D panel method solver APAME and the CFD-solver OpenFOAM, which use a steady Reynolds-Averaged Navier−Stokes approach with k-ω SST turbulence model. The finite-volume mesh for the CFD-solver is generated automatically with Pointwise using eight physical design parameters, five aerofoil profiles and mesh refinement specifi... [more]

April 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dynamic performance, economic performance, gear-shifting strategy, pure electric vehicle, two-speed automatic transmission
The two-speed automatic transmission can adjust the drive motor speed of electric vehicles and expand their output torque range. This study proposes a rule-based partitioned gear-shifting strategy for pure electric vehicles equipped with a two-speed dual-clutch transmission, combining economic and dynamic shifting strategies to ensure low energy consumption and strong power. Specifically, fuzzy logic is applied to adaptively modify the partition shifting strategy online, to reduce invalid gearshifts, increase the service life of the transmission, and improve driving comfort. Finally, we compare the economic performance and dynamic performance of pure electric vehicles equipped with a two-speed dual-clutch transmission and a single-speed final drive. The results show that the vehicle equipped with the two-speed dual-clutch transmission has better economic and dynamic performance. In addition, its maximum climbing ability was verified by rig testing. These results prove that the two-spee... [more]

April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: climate neutrality, investment profitability, photovoltaic panels, sustainable development
The aim of this study is to examine the profitability of investment in a photovoltaic microinstallation, to analyze the impact of legal changes on its profitability, and to perform a sensitivity analysis of the investment profitability to energy price changes. The novelty of the research applies to the financial analysis of two legal systems of discount called net-metering and net-billing. The two systems and the change in energy prices present legal and macroeconomic risks. Climate neutrality strategy implementation is the analysis background. The authors formulate the hypothesis that, firstly, the solar panel installations in Poland are aimed at reducing the operating costs of the building; secondly, the investment motivation is environmental. The main research conclusion is that taking into consideration the solar panel ‘boom’ in Poland, the ‘regulator’ has achieved its intended goal connected with progress toward climate neutrality. This research used the method of logical design,... [more]
Heat-Transfer Mechanisms in a Solar Cooking Pot with Thermal Energy Storage
Maarten Vanierschot, Ashmore Mawire
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: computational fluid dynamics (CFD), solar cooking pot, thermal energy storage (TES)
This paper presents a detailed analysis of the heat-transfer mechanisms in a solar cooking pot with thermal energy storage using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The vast majority of studies on solar cookers have been experimentally performed using local temperature measurements with thermocouples. Therefore, the heat-transfer mechanisms can only be studied using lumped capacitance models as the detailed profiles of temperature and heat fluxes inside the cooker are missing. CFD is an alternative modelling technique to obtain this detailed information. In this study, sunflower oil is used as both cooking fluid and energy storage medium. Comparison of the model with the available experimental data shows that the deviation is within the measurement accuracy of the latter. Hence, despite some assumptions, such as axisymmetry and an estimation of the heat transfer parameters to the ambient, the model is able to describe the involved physical processes accurately. It is shown that, initia... [more]

The present paper is the result of a cooperation between Politecnico di Torino and AVL List Gmbh within a recent collaborative research project funded by the EC. The research work was focused on the experimental and numerical characterization of mixture formation, combustion, and emissions in direct-injection NG engines, to draw useful indication for the design of innovative, high-performance engine concepts. As a matter of fact, direct-injection IC engines running on NG are believed to be a competitive transition solution towards a sustainable mobility scenario, given their maturity, technological readiness, and flexibility with respect to the fuel quality. Moreover, gaseous-fuel engines can further decrease their carbon footprint if blending of natural gas with hydrogen is considered. Provided that mixture formation represents a key aspect for the design of direct-injection engines, the activity presented in this paper is focused on the characterization of NG injection and on the mix... Keywords: degradation mechanisms, lifetime, lithium-ion batteries, multi-service application, stationary energy storage
A reliable power grid system based on renewable energy sources is a crucial step to restrict the climate crisis. Stationary battery energy storage systems (BESS) offer a great potential to repel power fluctuations in the grid at different timescales. However, for a reliable operation and cost estimation, the degradation in the batteries needs to be understood. We present an accelerated battery degradation study, on single as well as multi-service applications, of NCM532/Gr lithium-ion battery cells. Frequency regulation (FR) was the least harmful for the battery, with an expected lifetime of 12 years, while peak shaving (PS) resulted in an expected lifetime of 8 years. The combined cycle (FRPS) accelerated the capacity loss, and degradation of the positive electrode was induced from the start of cycling, causing power limitations after only 870 equivalent full cycles (EFC). Tracking the 1C-rate discharge capacity was proven to be a good indication of the accelerated cell polarization,... [more]

April 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: deep learning, lithium-ion batteries, multi-state estimation of batteries, multi-task learning
Deep learning-based state estimation of lithium batteries is widely used in battery management system (BMS) design. However, due to the limitation of on-board computing resources, multiple single-state estimation models are more difficult to deploy in practice. Therefore, this paper proposes a multi-task learning network (MTL) combining a multi-layer feature extraction structure with separated expert layers for the joint estimation of the state of charge (SOC) and state of energy (SOE) of Li-ion batteries. MTL uses a multi-layer network to extract features, separating task sharing from task-specific parameters. The underlying LSTM initially extracts time-series features. The separated expert layer, consisting of task-specific and shared experts, extracts features specific to different tasks and shared features for multiple tasks. The information extracted by different experts is fused through a gate structure. Tasks are processed based on specific and shared information. Multiple tasks... [more]

Keywords: DC distribution, electrical efficiency, harmonic power flow
Recently, there has been considerable research interest in the potential for DC distribution systems in buildings instead of the traditional AC distribution systems. Due to the need for performing power conversions between DC and AC electricity, DC distribution may provide electrical efficiency advantages in some systems. To support comparative evaluations of AC-only, DC-only, and hybrid AC/DC distribution systems in buildings, a new modeling toolkit called the Building Electrical Efficiency Analysis Model (BEEAM) was developed and is described in this paper. To account for harmonics in currents or voltages arising from nonlinear devices, the toolkit implements harmonic power flow, along with nonlinear device behavioral descriptions derived from empirical measurements. This paper describes the framework, network equations, device representations, and an implementation of the toolkit in an open source software package, including a component library and graphical interface for creating c... Analysis of the Impact of Design Parameters on the Power Density of the New Design of the Cogging Machine
Tomasz Lerch
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cogging machine, PMSM design parameters, power density, torque density, transverse flux machine
The cogging machine is a new design of a machine with permanent magnets, which combines the advantages of a machine with transverse flux (TFM), eliminating its disadvantages. The biggest advantage of TFM machines is their high torque density, which varies with the design parameters. The developed machine retains these advantages while simplifying the construction of the stator core, which is the biggest disadvantage of TFM machines. This article presents the results of an analysis of the power density of the developed cogging machine as a function of a number of pole pairs and the basic design parameters. Analyses were carried out on the basis of the derived analytical equations, which make the generated torque depend on the construction parameters. Thanks to the derived dependencies, one can easily examine the effects of modifying the machine structure. The results presented in the article prove that the developed design of the cogging machine is competitive in relation to machines wi... [more]

The paper examines the challenges related to solar photovoltaic (PV) development with a pivotal focus on the impacts of the dynamics of the relevant markets and technological advancements in the solar industry. In this regard, household investments into rooftop solar PV modules as one of the available incentives are investigated based on a conducted experiment in Lithuania for selecting rooftop solar PV systems for the prosumer by measuring the attractiveness of solar PV modules by a categorical-based evaluation technique (MACBETH). While a variety of multiple-criteria decision-making (MCDM) methods used by scholars have their specifics in terms of application and the divergence of results, the findings of the conducted experiment reveal MACBETH’s utility when based upon qualitative judgments about the differences in the attractiveness of offers, quantifying their relative value and accordingly ranking the latter. The findings also confirm MACBETH’s potential to be used not only to sol... [more]

Keywords: array spectroradiometer, global spectral irradiance, instrumental characterisation, radiative transfer models, solar energy, solar radiation, UV index
Array spectroradiometers are increasingly being used to measure natural and artificial optical radiation because of their many advantages compared to traditional instruments. This study aims to thoroughly characterise a commercially available, cost-effective array device (AvaSpec ULS2048-LTEC) and compare its measurements of global solar irradiance in the 290−1100 nm wavelength range with those collected during three short-term field campaigns from more advanced, or specifically designed instruments. Moreover, the AvaSpec observations were compared with the output of a radiative transfer model. The results show that, despite its conceptually simple instrumental design, the AvaSpec can provide measurements of nearly comparable quality to those from reference instruments (e.g., UV index and global horizontal irradiance generally within ±5%) if all corrections are performed. These preliminary observations will be the basis of a long-term series at the Aosta−Saint-Christophe observatory, w... [more]
A Model Predictive Control Approach for Heliostat Field Power Regulatory Aiming Strategy under Varying Cloud Shadowing Conditions
Ruidi Zhu, Dong Ni
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cloud shadowing, dynamic aiming strategy, Model Predictive Control, Optimization
Weather conditions have significant impacts on the solar concentration processes of the heliostat fields in solar tower power plants. The cloud shadow movements may cause varying solar irradiance levels received by each heliostat. Hence, fixed aiming strategies may not be able to guarantee the solar concentrating performance. Dynamic aiming strategies are able to optimize the aiming strategy based on real-time shadowing conditions and short-term forecast, and, therefore, provide much more robust solar concentration performance compared to fixed strategies. In this work, a model predictive control approach for s heliostat field power regulatory aiming strategy was proposed to regulate the total concentrated solar flux on the central receiver. The model predictive control method obtains the aiming strategy, leveraging real-time and forecast shadowing conditions based on the solar concentration model of the heliostat field. The allowable flux density of the receiver and the aiming angle a... [more]

April 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: convolutional block attention module, foreign object shading detection, photovoltaic module, transfer learning
As a representative new energy source, solar energy has the advantages of easy access to resources and low pollution. However, due to the uncertainty of the external environment, photovoltaic (PV) modules that collect solar energy are often covered by foreign objects in the environment such as leaves and bird droppings, resulting in a decrease in photoelectric conversion efficiency, power losses, and even the “hot spot” phenomenon, resulting in damage to the modules. Existing methods mostly inspect foreign objects manually, which not only incurs high labor costs but also hinders real-time monitoring. To address these problems, this paper proposes an IDETR deep learning target detection model based on Deformable DETR combined with transfer learning and a convolutional block attention module, which can identify foreign object shading on the surfaces of PV modules in actual operating environments. This study contributes to the optimal operation and maintenance of PV systems. In addition,... [more]

Hydrogen production from biogas over alumina-supported Ce1−xNixO2−x catalysts was studied in a temperature range of 600−850 °C with an initial gas composition of CH4/CO2/H2O of 1/0.8/0.4. To achieve a high and stable hydrogen yield, highly dispersed Ni catalysts were prepared through the exsolution approach. A solid solution of Ce1−xNixO2−x was firstly formed on the surface of Al2O3 and then activated in H2/Ar at 800 °C. The genesis and properties of the Ce1−xNixO2−x/Al2O3 catalysts were established using X-ray fluorescence analysis, thermal analysis, N2 adsorption, ex situ and in situ X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, electron microscopy, EDX analysis, and temperature-programmed hydrogen reduction. The performance of Ce1−xNixO2−x/Al2O3 catalysts in biogas conversion was tuned by regulation of the dispersion and reducibility of the active component through variation of content (5−20 wt.%) and composition (x = 0.2, 0.5, 0.8) of Ce1−xNixO2−x as well as the mode of its loading (co-im... Off-grid hybrid renewable energy systems represent the most modern and flexible solutions that can cover a wide range of energy efficiency needs for household consumers. In the current context, these systems must be taken into account by most household consumers, given the fact that the price of energy has increased. This paper proposes an experimental analysis of the behavior of such a system, in real operating conditions, considering two renewable energy sources, wind and photovoltaic sources, using an experimental stand. It can be considered a testing platform for hybrid energy production systems, in that the power installed in the two sources can be scaled up. The platform has the advantage of allowing the implementation of different load and wind curves through a programmable logic controller; in this way, it is possible to evaluate the degree of coverage of the energy consumption produced from renewable sources, in the north-east of Romania, in the Suceava County region.
