Subject: Optimization
Keywords: ANFIS, Fermentation, neuro-fuzzy, oil palm trunk sap, particle swarm optimization (PSO)
Five major operations for the conversion of lignocellulosic biomasses into bioethanol are pre-treatment, detoxification, hydrolysis, fermentation, and distillation. The fermentation process is a significant biological step to transform lignocellulose into biofuel. The interactions of biochemical networks and their uncertainty and nonlinearity that occur during fermentation processes are major problems for experts developing accurate bioprocess models. In this study, mechanical processing and pre-treatment on the palm trunk were done before fermentation. Analysis was performed on the fresh palm sap and the fermented sap to determine the composition. The analysis for total sugar content was done using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and the percentage of alcohols by volume was determined using gas chromatography (GC). A model was also developed for the fermentation process based on the Adaptive-Network-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) combined with particle swarm optimization... [more]
Thermodynamic and Kinetic Considerations Regarding the Prospects for a Dual-Purpose Hydrogen Extraction and Separation Membrane
Karl Sohlberg
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: heterogeneous catalyst, hydrogen extraction, hydrogen separation, interface, membrane, rate equations
Extraction of hydrogen from hydrocarbons is a logical intermediate-term solution for the escalating worldwide demand for hydrogen. This work explores the possibility of using a single membrane to accomplish both the catalytic dehydrogenation and physical separation of hydrogen gas as a possible way to improve the efficiency of hydrogen production from hydrocarbon sources. The present analysis shows that regions of pressure/temperature space exist for which the overall process is thermodynamically spontaneous (ΔG < 0). Each step in the process is based on known physics. The rate of hydrogen production is likely to be controlled by the barrier to hydrogen abstraction, with the density of H-binding sites also playing a role. A critical materials issue will be the strength of the oxide/metal interface.
Remaining Useful Life Prediction of MOSFETs via the Takagi−Sugeno Framework

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: degradation modeling, prediction, remaining useful life, soft computing, Takagi–Sugeno
The paper presents a new method of predicting the remaining useful life of technical devices. The proposed soft computing approach bridges the gap between analytical and data-driven health prognostic approaches. Whilst the former ones are based on the classical exponential shape of degradation, the latter ones learn the degradation behavior from the observed historical data. As a result of the proposed fusion, a practical method for calculating components’ remaining useful life is proposed. Contrarily to the approaches presented in the literature, the proposed ensemble of analytical and data-driven approaches forms the uncertainty interval containing an expected remaining useful life. In particular, a Takagi−Sugeno multiple models-based framework is used as a data-driven approach while an exponential curve fitting on-line approach serves as an analytical one. Unlike conventional data-driven methods, the proposed approach is designed on the basis of the historical data that apart from l... [more]

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: biodiesel production, chicken feet oil, response surface method, the membrane system, ultrasound
In this study, the experiments were carried out under different operating conditions to evaluate the effect of ultrasound waves on biodiesel production from chicken feet oil. A two-step esterification−transesterification mechanism was employed to improve the biodiesel quality. The continuous (methanol-to-oil molar ratio and KOH catalyst amount) and discrete (frequencies, 25 and 45 kHz) variables were investigated using the experimental design method. The five-level three-factor response surface method (RSM) was assisted to optimize the biodiesel synthesis variables. Applying RSM based on the central composite design (CCD), a polynomial equation was fitted to the experimental data with the aid of Design-Expert software. The model accuracy was checked by analysis of variance (ANOVA). The results showed the highest yield of 89.74% could be achieved by using an M/O molar ratio of 12, a KOH concentration of 1 wt%, and an ultrasound frequency of 45 kHz. Finally, a mathematical model of biodi... [more]

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: biogas yield, Biomass, manure, methane fermentation, methane production by fermentation, pocket
Methane production by fermentation is a complex biochemical process, in which micromolecular organic substances are broken down by anaerobic bacteria into simple stabilized chemicals—mainly methane CH4 and carbon dioxide CO2. The organic matter of the slurry consists mainly of fats, proteins and carbohydrates. As a result of biochemical changes in the process of anaerobic decomposition, some of this matter is mineralized to simple chemical compounds. Cattle and pig husbandry offers enormous potential for useable biogas plant substrates. As a result of the constantly increasing amounts of animal husbandry products, and increasingly stringent environmental protection requirements aimed at reusing natural fertilizers, it is necessary to look for alternative processing methods. The need for efficiency in obtaining biogas from substrates (e.g., manure) was met by the laboratory stand presented in this article, for which the Polish patent No. 232200 was obtained. The new technology also allo... [more]

Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: education, environmental policy, greenhouse gas emissions, health, policy implementation, poverty, sustainable development goals
One of the key challenges for climate policies is the identification of strategies that will effectively support the implementation of environmental goals. Environmental policies are connected with other development policies carried out by governments. In order to comprehensively shape environmental policy, it is important to understand the interactions between sustainable development goals (SDGs) as well as their impact on environmental goals. Employing econometric modeling based on the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (Lasso) method and full-factorial analysis, the authors identify a number of statistically significant relationships between the implementation of sustainable development goals and the environmental variable represented by greenhouse gas emissions. Analysis reveals that implementation of particular sustainable development goals, namely SDG4 (Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities) and SDG17 (Strengthen... April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: abrasives, wear, wear-resistant steels
The paper presents the results of tests of wear of hardened wear-resistant steels in the presence of quartz, coal and coal-mineral abrasives of a differentiated ratios of each component and in the case without abrasives. The tests were carried out on a ring-on-ring test stand. Volume loss was the parameter used to characterize the wear level. Based on the Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) observations, different mechanisms of surface destruction depending on the type of abrasive were found. For the quartz abrasive, it was shown that the quartz grains cause micro-cutting, but surface cracks also appear that further transform into shallow holes. In the case of mixtures of quartz with coal, the surface was micro-scratched by quartz grains, but some of these grains were hammered into the surface, what was favoured by the presence of coal fractions. In the case of coal abrasive, traces of single cutting were observed, as well as unremoved scratches formed at the sample grinding stage. Base... [more]

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: flow pattern, power production, three-dimensional non-isothermal model, tubular-shaped PEMFC
The influence of a tubular structure PEMFC (proton exchange membrane fuel cell) with different flow patterns is investigated in this study. A complete 3D non-isothermal model is constructed for square and circular tubular PEMFCs, and the distribution of oxygen and water concentration in cathode channels, current density, power density and cell net power are studied. To this end, the four arrangements of tubular PEMFC are square chordal (SC), square peripheral (SP), circular chordal (CC) and circular peripheral (CP). The calculation of the effective area and boundary conditions remains the same when performing all four configurations. The consequent results show that for the tubular structure PEMFC, compared with the co-flow mode, the counter-flow mode has better performance and provides more power. Using a counter-flow pattern, the permeability of the species increases, so a more uniform reaction occurs at the cell. The entire performance of the SP and CP model is not as good as that o... Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: energy security, evaluation, integral index, strategic planning, sustainable development, system approach
The current approaches to estimating the level of energy security are based on applying a comprehensive approach to selecting the factors that affect energy security and the dynamics of processes in this domain. This article reveals the application of the model of energy security estimation and strategizing based on the systemic description of energy security as an object of management: the integral system, elements and connections, functions, processes, and the system’s material. At the same time, this model is able to take into account the dynamics of technological, political, economic, and other factors operating in the country and on the global arena. The energy security estimation model developed uses a modern methodology of integrated estimation: a multiplicative form of the integrated index, a formalized definition of the safe existence limits in order to provide scientific substantiation of the threshold vector, a modified rationing method, the principal components method, and... Keywords: building dynamics, COVID-19 scenario, Energy Efficiency, human interaction, information and communication technologies, occupants’ comfort
Worldwide increasing awareness of energy sustainability issues has been the main driver in developing the concepts of (Nearly) Zero Energy Buildings, where the reduced energy consumptions are (nearly) fully covered by power locally generated by renewable sources. At the same time, recent advances in Internet of Things technologies are among the main enablers of Smart Homes and Buildings. The transition of conventional buildings into active environments that process, elaborate and react to online measured environmental quantities is being accelerated by the aspects related to COVID-19, most notably in terms of air exchange and the monitoring of the density of occupants. In this paper, we address the problem of maximizing the energy efficiency and comfort perceived by occupants, defined in terms of thermal comfort, visual comfort and air quality. The case study of the University of Pisa is considered as a practical example to show preliminary results of the aggregation of environmental d... [more]
Mass Spectrometric Calibration Procedure for Real-Time Detection of Lighter Hydrocarbons

Subject: Materials
Keywords: base peaks, fragmentation, lighter hydrocarbons, mass spectrometric calibration
Determining gas compositions from live well fluids on a drilling rig is critical for real time formation evaluation. Development and utilization of a reliable mass spectrometric method to accurately characterize these live well fluids are always challenging due to lack of a robust and effectively selective instrument and procedure. The methods currently utilized need better calibration for the characterization of light hydrocarbons (C1−C6) at lower concentrations. The primary goal of this research is to develop and optimize a powerful and reliable analytical method to characterize live well fluid using a quadruple mass spectrometer (MS). The mass spectrometers currently being used in the field have issues with detection, spectra deconvolution, and quantification of analytes at lower concentrations (10−500 ppm), particularly for the lighter (<30 m/z) hydrocarbons. The objectives of the present study are thus to identify the detection issues, develop and optimize a better method, cali... [more]

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bismuth vanadate films, compound target, photocatalyst, RF sputtering
BiVO4 films were fabricated by radio frequency (RF) sputtering from a single target. The deposited BiVO4 films were found to be rich in Bi, and the reason for the Bi-richness was investigated. It was inferred from the Monte Carlo simulation that, during sputtering, the transfer process of target atoms through argon gas played a major role in this phenomenon. The transfer process resulted in an imbalanced ratio of Bi and V, arising from the difference in atom mass and interaction radius. The high RF power was found to be effective in adjusting the Bi/V ratio, influencing the sputtering yield. This type of preferential sputtering was maintained by the diffusion of target atoms from the bulk to the surface. BiVO4 films with monoclinic scheelite crystal structures were obtained at high RF power values and found to exhibit photocatalytic performances beneficial for photoanodic applications.

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: composite insulator, electric field strength, finite element, operating state, pollution flashover
Through spatial electric field monitoring, it is expected to realize insulator pollution condition monitoring and contamination flashover warning in a non-contact way. Therefore, in this paper, the spatial electric field distribution characteristics of 110 kV composite insulators are simulated, where the effects of different surface states and their discharge levels on the spatial electric field of insulators are analyzed. On this basis, a non-contact monitoring method for composite insulator pollution based on the spatial electric field is proposed. The results show that there are significant differences in the spatial electric field of the composite insulator among three conditions, namely cleaning, pollution layer wetting, and dry band arcing. Increases of pollution layer wetting and dry band arcing would lead to an increase of the amplitude of the spatial electric field of the insulator. Verification experiments well indicated that it is feasible to identify the degree of pollution... [more]

Sustainable energy is needed globally, and Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) is a possible way to diversify the energy matrix. This article suggests a preliminary selection process to find optimal sites for OTEC deployment on the Mexican coastline. The method comprises the (1) evaluation of the thermal power potential, using daily data (16 years) of sea surface temperature, and the percentage of available time of the power thresholds; (2) assessment of feasibility using a decision matrix, fed by technical, environmental and socioeconomic criteria; (3) identification of four potential sites; and (4) comparison of OTEC competitiveness with other technologies through the levelized cost of energy. Multi-criteria decision analysis was applied to select optimal sites, using the technique for ordering performance by the similarity to the ideal solution. The best sites were (1) Puerto Angel and (2) Cabo San Lucas; with power production of > 50 MW and a persistence of > 40%. As yet there i... [more]
Data-Driven Online Energy Scheduling of a Microgrid Based on Deep Reinforcement Learning

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: data driven modeling, microgrid energy management, proximal policy optimization, recurrent neural network
The proliferation of distributed renewable energy resources (RESs) poses major challenges to the operation of microgrids due to uncertainty. Traditional online scheduling approaches relying on accurate forecasts become difficult to implement due to the increase of uncertain RESs. Although several data-driven methods have been proposed recently to overcome the challenge, they generally suffer from a scalability issue due to the limited ability to optimize high-dimensional continuous control variables. To address these issues, we propose a data-driven online scheduling method for microgrid energy optimization based on continuous-control deep reinforcement learning (DRL). We formulate the online scheduling problem as a Markov decision process (MDP). The objective is to minimize the operating cost of the microgrid considering the uncertainty of RESs generation, load demand, and electricity prices. To learn the optimal scheduling strategy, a Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU)-based network is desig... [more]

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: blade design, natural laboratory, wind tunnel, wind turbine model
Experimental tests performed in a wind tunnel or in a natural laboratory represent a fundamental research tool to develop floating wind technologies. In order to obtain reliable results, the wind turbine scale model rotor must be designed so to obtain a fluid-structure interaction comparable to the one experienced by a real machine. This implies an aerodynamic design of the 3D blade geometry but, also, a structural project to match the main aeroelastic issues. For natural laboratory models, due to not controlled test conditions, the wind turbine rotor model must be checked also for extreme winds. The present paper will focus on all the strategies adopted to scale a wind turbine blade presenting two studied cases: the first is a 1:75 scale model for wind tunnel applications and the second a 1:15 model for natural laboratory tests.
An Overview on Electric-Stress Degradation Empirical Models for Electrochemical Devices in Smart Grids

Keywords: battery bank, degradation model, fuel cell, photovoltaic panel, PV panel, smart grid, supercapacitor, ultracapacitor
The conversion from existing electrical networks into an all-renewable and environmentally friendly electrification scenario is insufficient to produce and distribute energy efficiently. Electrochemical devices’ premature degradation as a whole caused by electrical stressors in smart grids is incipient from an energy management strategies (EMS) perspective. Namely, few electrical-stress degradation models for photovoltaic panels, batteries, fuel cells, and super/ultra-capacitors (SCs), and particular stressors can be found in the literature. In this article, the basic operating principles for such devices, existing degradation models, and future research hints, including their incorporation in novel EMS, are condensed. The necessity of extending these studies to other stressors and devices is also emphasized. There are many other degradation models by non-electrical stressors, such as climatic conditions and mechanical wear. Although novel EMS should manage both electrical and non-elec... [more]

Keywords: dynamic stability, renewables grid connection, small signal modelling, synchronous power controller, virtual damping, virtual inertia
Nowadays, modern power converters installed in renewable power plants can provide flexible electromechanical characteristics that rely on the developed control technologies such as Synchronous Power Controller (SPC). Since high renewable penetrated power grids result in a low-inertia system, this electromechanical characteristic provides support to the dynamic stability of active power and frequency in the power generation area. This goal can be achieved through the proper tuning of virtual electromechanical parameters that are embedded in the control layers of power converters. In this paper, a novel mathematical pattern and strategy have been proposed to adjust dynamic parameters in Renewable Static Synchronous Generators controlled by SPC (RSSG-SPC). A detailed dynamic modeling was obtained for a feasible design of virtual damping coefficient and virtual moment of inertia in the electrometrical control layer of RSSG-SPC’s power converters. Keywords: Artificial Intelligence, converter, Modelling, photovoltaics, power electronics, power quality
This paper introduces a new black-box approach for time domain modeling of commercially available single-phase photovoltaic (PV) inverters in low voltage networks. An artificial neural network is used as a nonlinear autoregressive exogenous model to represent the steady state behavior as well as dynamic changes of the PV inverter in the frequency range up to 2 kHz. The data for the training and the validation are generated by laboratory measurements of a commercially available inverter for low power applications, i.e., 4.6 kW. The state of the art modeling approaches are explained and the constraints are addressed. The appropriate set of data for training is proposed and the results show the suitability of the trained network as a black-box model in time domain. Such models are required, i.e., for dynamic simulations since they are able to represent the transition between two steady states, which is not possible with classical frequency-domain models (i.e., Norton models). The demonstr... [more]

Keywords: coal mine, faults, numerical simulation, support
Massive deformation often occurs when deep coalmine roadways pass through a fault zone due to the poor integrity of rock mass and high tectonic stress. To study deformation characteristics of the surrounding rock in the fault zone of a coalmine, a roadway passing through the FD1041 fault zone in China’s Gugui coalfield was investigated in this research. The geo-stress characteristics of this fault zone were analyzed based on the Mohr failure theory. Furthermore, a three-dimensional model for the experimental roadway in the FD1041 fault zone was built and calculated by a numerical program based on the distinct element method. Stability conditions of the roadway, using several types of support methods, were calculated and compared. Calculation results indicated that pre-grouting provides favorable conditions for the stability of a roadway in a fault zone. Finally, an optimized support strategy was proposed and implemented in the experimental roadway. Monitored results demonstrated that t... [more]

Keywords: EV charging, three-phase SiC inverter, three-phase wireless power transfer (WPT)
This paper presents the experimental validation, using the opposition method, of a high-power three-phase Wireless-Power-Transfer (WPT) system for automotive applications. The system under test consists of three coils with circular sector shape overlapped to minimize the mutual cross-coupling, a three-phase inverter at primary side and a three-phase rectifier at receiver side. In fact thanks to the delta configuration used to connect the coils of the electromagnetic structure, a three-phase Silicon Carbide (SiC) inverter is driving the transmitter side. The resonance tank capacitors are placed outside of the delta configuration reducing in this way their voltage sizing. This WPT system is used as a 100 kW−85 kHz ultrafast battery charger for light delivery vehicle directly supplied by the power grid of tramways. The adopted test-bench for the WPT charger consists of adding circulating boost converter to the system under test to perform the opposition method technique. The experimental... [more]
