Nowadays, many aircraft manufacturers are working on new airplanes to reduce the environmental footprint and therefore meet greenhouse gas reduction targets. The concept of more electric aircraft is one of the solutions to achieve this goal. For this aircraft architecture, several electrical devices are used in order to supply propulsive and non-propulsive functions. This paper focuses on the sizing of a direct hybridization system to supply a non-propulsive function in an aircraft. It is composed of a High-Temperature Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (HT-PEMFC) and a lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery. This sizing is based on a static model of each storage device. The accuracy of these models is compared with dynamic models during a simulation for an aeronautical mission. In this review, recent progress of the main reforming processes of methanol towards hydrogen production is summarized. Hydrogen (H2) has become an important energy vector for mitigating the effects of climate change since it can be obtained from renewable sources and can be fed to fuel cells for producing power. Bioethanol can become a green H2 source via Ethanol Steam Reforming (ESR) but several variables influence the power production in the fuel cell. Herein, we explored and optimized the main variables that affect this power production. The process includes biomass fermentation, bioethanol purification, H2 production via ESR, syngas cleaning by a CO-removal reactor, and power production in a high temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cell (HT-PEMFC). Stainless steel interconnect materials used in solid oxide fuel cells and electrolysers need to be coated to improve oxidation resistance and to mitigate Cr-vaporization. This work aimed to explore the optimal steel/coating combinations suitable for use in reversible solid oxide stacks and evaluated (Co,Mn)3O4 spinel, LaFeO3 perovskite, Ce/Co and Y-based coatings, on AISI441 and Crofer 22 APU steels. The coatings were evaluated based on measurements of mass gain and oxide scale thickness after exposure at 700 and 800 °C to fuel side (90 vol.% H2O/10 vol.% H2) and air/oxygen side (pure O2) atmospheres. In pure O2, the most efficient coatings for limiting oxide scale formation and Cr evaporation, compared to the bare steel, were (Co,Mn)3O4 and CeCo on Crofer 22 APU. In 90 vol.% H2O/10 vol.% H2, the Y-based coating showed the largest improvement in oxidation resistance.
Enhanced OH− Conductivity for Fuel Cells with Anion Exchange Membranes, Based on Modified Terpolymer Polyketone and Surface Functionalized Silica

Several modified terpolymer polyketones (MPK) with N-substituted pyrrole moieties in the main chain and quaternized amine in the side group were synthesized for use as anion exchange membranes for fuel cells. The moieties were carried by SiO2 nanoparticles through surface functionalization (Si−N), which were added to the membranes to enhance their overall properties. On increasing the amount of modified silica from 10% to 60% wt/of MPK, there was an increase in Si−N and a corresponding threefold increase in the hydroxide conductivity of the membrane. The MPK−SiN (60%) exhibited a superior ionic conductivity of 1.05 × 10−1 S.cm−1 at 120 °C, a high mechanical stability, with a tensile strength of 46 MPa at 80 °C. In strongly alkaline conditions (1 M KOH, 216 h at 80 °C), the membranes maintained about 70% of the conductivity measured in a usual environment. Anaerobic digestion (AD) and sewage sludge digestion (SD) plants generate significant quantities of ammoniacal nitrogen in their digestate liquor. This article assesses the economic viability and CO2 abatement opportunity from the utilisation of this ammonia under three scenarios and proposes their potential for uptake in the United Kingdom. Each state-of-the-art process route recovers ammonia and uses it alongside AD-produced biomethane for three different end goals: (1) the production of H2 as a bus transport fuel, (2) production of H2 for injection to the gas grid and (3) generation of heat and power via solid oxide fuel cell technology. The operating conditions can have uncontrolled effects on the voltage of a High-Temperature Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (HT-PEMFC). For instance, the HT-PEMFC can be used at ambient pressure, i.e., without having a back pressure regulator. In this case, the variation in the atmospheric pressure directly affects pressures inside the fuel cell, which induces voltage variation. A study of energy supply alternatives was carried out based on a cogeneration fuel cell system fed from the natural gas network of compact Mediterranean cities. As a case study it was applied to the residential energy demands of the L’Illa Perduda neighbourhood, located in the east of the city of Valencia and consisting of 4194 residential cells. In total, eight different alternatives were studied according to the load curve, the power of the system, the mode of operation and the distribution of the fuel cells. In this paper, the performance of a high-temperature polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (HT-PEMFC) was modeled using literature data. The paper attempted to combine different sources from the literature to find trends in the degradation mechanisms of HT-PEMFCs. The model focused on the activation and ohmic losses. The activation losses were defined as a function of both Pt agglomeration and loss of catalyst material. The simulations revealed that the loss of electrochemical active surface area (ECSA) was a major contributor to the total voltage loss. The ohmic losses were defined as a function of changes of acid doping level in time. The loss of conductivity increased significantly on a percentage basis over time, but its impact on the overall voltage degradation was fairly low. It was found that the evaporation of phosphoric acid caused the ohmic overpotential to increase, especially at temperatures above 180 °C. Combined heat and power technologies represent an efficient way to ensure energy efficiency, as they promote usage of both electrical and thermal energy, something not done by most traditional energy sources, especially in residential environments. In this context, high-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells allow the implementation of combined heat and power systems. Additionally, in this environment, fuel cells are more efficient and less polluting than their traditional counterparts. We present a literature review of energy management in residential systems based on this type of fuel cell. In addition, we classify and detail the current state of fuel cell technologies, paying special attention to their characteristics, mathematical modelling and control, as well as combined heat and power systems and energy management strategies.

A water recuperation system (WRS) from an open-cathode proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is designed to increase the energy density of hydrogen production by hydrolysis of metal hydrides. WRS may significantly reduce the water weight in the carried fuel. The design is based on circulating the humid air through the PEMFC stack in a closed dome. To ensure oxygen supply to the PEMFC, the WRS has a ventilation inlet and an exhaust outlet. The required conditions for ventilation flow are developed theoretically and examined experimentally in a WRS prototype with a commercial PEMFC at 20−100 W. The experimental system includeds a closed dome, an edge cooling system for the PEMFC, a controllable ventilation air inlet, and an exhaust port. Fuel cells are one of the zero-emission elements of modern automotive drive systems. This article presents theoretical identification of the component parameters of indicators for the fuel cell operating conditions. Activation, ohmic, and mass transport losses were identified. Current−voltage characteristics were provided along with an analysis of typical cell losses. The actual performance characteristics of fuel cells were analyzed for Toyota Mirai I and II generation vehicles. The fuel cells operating conditions were derived and analyzed in the context of real driving conditions. Therefore, urban, rural, and motorway conditions were used. The application of expansion turbines at natural gas pressure reduction stations (PRS) is considered in order to recover energy contained in the natural gas. The main objective of this work was to investigate the potential of hydrogen and fuel cells replacing diesel and internal combustion engines in the ultraclass haul trucks deployed in the mining sector. Performance, range, durability, and cost are the main criteria considered for comparing the two fuels and engine options. Fuel cell system (FCS) performance is characterized in terms of heat rejection, efficiency, and fuel consumption for a hybrid platform equivalent to a 3500 hp diesel engine operating on a representative open pit mining duty cycle. A hybrid platform was chosen because the heat rejection, with a constrained radiator frontal area, limits the maximum fuel cell-rated power by about 50% compared to that of the diesel truck. Early-Stage Detection of Solid Oxide Cells Anode Degradation by Operando Impedance Analysis

Solid oxide cells represent one of the most efficient and promising electrochemical technologies for hydrogen energy conversion. Understanding and monitoring degradation is essential for their full development and wide diffusion. Techniques based on electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and distribution of relaxation times of physicochemical processes occurring in solid oxide cells have attracted interest for the operando diagnosis of degradation. This research paper aims to validate the methodology developed by the authors in a previous paper, showing how such a diagnostic tool may be practically implemented. The validation methodology is based on applying an a priori known stress agent to a solid oxide cell operated in laboratory conditions and on the discrete measurement and deconvolution of electrochemical impedance spectra. Finally, experimental evidence obtained from a fully operando approach was counterchecked through ex-post material characterization.

This article presents the results of the development of membrane-catalytic methods for obtaining purified hydrogen of various degrees of purity required for feeding high-, medium-, and low-temperature fuel cells. In order to conduct this, porous ceramic catalytic converters were obtained using self-propagating high-temperature synthesis. These converters are suitable for high-speed processes for producing synthesis gas with different carbon monoxide content (0.08−0.1 vol. %), which can be used to feed fuel cells of various types. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is an important electrochemical technique that is used to detect changes and ongoing processes in a given material. The main challenge of EIS is interpreting the collected measurements, which can be performed in several ways. This article focuses on the electrical equivalent circuit (EEC) approach and uses grammatical evolution to automatically construct an EEC that produces an AC response that corresponds to one obtained by the measured electrochemical process(es). For fitting purposes, synthetic measurements and data from measurements in a realistic environment were used.
