Production of Olefins from Carbon Dioxide and Renewable Energy

Nowadays, it is crucial to change daily habits to live in a more sustainable world. From an industrial point of view, the capture of CO2 is becoming more and more important in the chemical industry to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and its reuse can be an alternative to fossil resources. Another major challenge for future engineers is the significant increase in the use of renewable energy sources. In this perspective, a process allowing the synthesis of three different olefins from CO2 captured in industrial flue gases and using only wind energy is established. This process is separated into three major sections: water electrolysis, carbon dioxide reduction to produce methanol and methanol-to-olefins synthesis. Modeling of Oxidative Coupling of Methane for Manufacture of Olefins—Part I: CFD Simulations

This paper presents a comprehensive computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model for describing the oxidative coupling of methane (OCM) carried out in fixed-bed reactors for olefin production. Initially, a single pellet model was developed and implemented to describe the heat and mass transfer within the pellet and between the gaseous and solid phases. Subsequently, sensitivity analyses were performed to assess the impact of pellet arrangement and feed conditions on the heat and mass transfer rates, subsequently affecting concentration and temperature profiles. As indicated by the simulations, a high ethylene content could be obtained with the increase in the CH4/O2 ratio, aligning well with previous experimental studies. Closing of Carbon Cycle by Waste Gasification for Circular Economy Implementation in Poland

Domestic coal and waste resources, which are valuable sources of carbon, can support efforts to transform a linear economy into a circular carbon economy. Their use, as an alternative to conventional, imported fossil resources (crude oil, natural gas) for chemical production, provides an opportunity for Poland to solve problems related to competitiveness, security of supply, and sustainable development in various industries. This is important for Poland because it can provide it with a long-term perspective of economic growth and development, taking into account global trends (e.g., the Paris Agreement) and EU legislation.
