Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, cost-effective, Energy Efficiency, Optimization, propeller boss cap fins, shipping
This paper aims to cost-effectively improve the energy efficiency of large vessels in shipping by the optimum design of propeller boss cap fins (PBCFs). First, a model propeller of the modern four-blade propeller in a Ro-Ro ship, with no boss cap fin in its original design, is experimentally and numerically investigated. The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model reproduced all the experiments very well. Then, the CFD model is used to conduct a comprehensive optimum design of PBCFs for the down-scaled propeller. Besides the commonly used rectangular PBCFs, nine airfoils are investigated, due to their favorable lift-to-drag ratio and great potential of being effective PBCFs. The best performing profile, among the 10 shapes, is chosen as the PBCF for further optimization. Finally, the optimum design of the PBCFs for the propeller/rudder system is achieved. It was found to yield remarkable efficiency gains for the modern propeller/rudder system under both design and off-design operation... [more]

Keywords: building energy model, Energy, Energy Efficiency, genetic algorithms, Optimization, Python, Simulation
The current practice with building energy simulation software tools requires the manual entry of a large list of detailed inputs pertaining to the building characteristics, geographical region, schedule of operation, end users, occupancy, control aspects, and more. While these software tools allow the evaluation of the energy consumption of a building with various combinations of building parameters, with the manual information entry and considering the large number of parameters related to building design and operation, global optimization is extremely challenging. In the present paper, a novel approach is developed for the global optimization of building energy models (BEMs) using Python EnergyPlus. A Python-based script is developed to automate the data entry into the building energy modeling tool (EnergyPlus) and numerous possible designs that cover the desired ranges of multiple variables are simulated. The resulting datasets are then used to establish a surrogate BEM using an art... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: anaerobic digestion, biogas, chemostat, maintenance, operating diagram, Optimization, productivity, stability
We consider one-step and two-step simple models of anaerobic digestion that are able to adequately capture the main dynamical behaviour of the full anaerobic digestion model ADM1. We do not consider specific growth functions. We only require them to satisfy certain qualitative assumptions. These assumptions are satisfied for concave growth functions, but they are also satisfied for a large class of growth functions found in many applications. We consider the maximisation of the biogas production with respect to the operating parameters of the model, which are the dilution rate and the substrate input concentration. We give the best operating conditions and we describe them as a subset of the set of operating parameters. Our models incorporate biomass decay terms, corresponding to maintenance. Numerical plots with specified growth functions and biological parameters illustrate the obtained results.

Composting is a more environmentally friendly and cost-effective alternative to digesting organic waste and turning it into organic fertilizer. It is a biological process in which polymeric waste materials contained in organic waste are biodegraded by fungi and bacteria. Temperature, pH, moisture content, C/N ratio, particle size, nutrient content and oxygen supply all have an impact on the efficiency of the composting process. To achieve optimal composting efficiency, all of these variables and their interactions must be considered. To this end, statistical optimization techniques and mathematical modeling approaches have been developed over the years. In this paper, an overview of optimization and mathematical modeling approaches in the field of composting processes is presented. The advantages and limitations of optimization and mathematical modeling for improving composting processes are also addressed.

Keywords: Algorithms, non-traditional algorithms, Optimization, process optimization, process parameters
The optimization of industrial processes is a critical task for leveraging profitability and sustainability. To ensure the selection of optimum process parameter levels in any industrial process, numerous metaheuristic algorithms have been proposed so far. However, many algorithms are either computationally too expensive or become trapped in the pit of local optima. To counter these challenges, in this paper, a hybrid metaheuristic called PSO-GSA is employed that works by combining the iterative improvement capability of particle swarm optimization (PSO) and gravitational search algorithm (GSA). A binary PSO is also fused with GSA to develop a BPSO-GSA algorithm. Both the hybrid algorithms i.e., PSO-GSA and BPSO-GSA, are compared against traditional algorithms, such as tabu search (TS), genetic algorithm (GA), differential evolution (DE), GSA and PSO algorithms. Moreover, another popular hybrid algorithm DE-GA is also used for comparison. Since earlier works have already studied the pe... [more]

Keywords: decarbonization, industrial energy system, Optimization, renewable energy supply
The urgent need for CO2 reduction is calling upon the industry to contribute. However, changes within local energy supply systems including efficiency enhancement are bound to several economical and technical constraints, which results in interfering trade-offs that make it difficult to find the optimal investment option for CO2 mitigation. In this article, a new optimization model is presented that allows to optimize the design and operation of a supply and heat recovery system and production scheduling simultaneously. The model was used for retrofitting of a small brewery’s local energy system to identify decarbonization measures for eight potential future scenarios with different technical, economical and ecological boundary conditions. The results show that the proposed cost-optimized changes to the current energy system only slightly reduce carbon emissions if decarbonization is not enforced since the optimal solutions prioritize integration of photo voltaic (PV) modules that main... Biodiesel is one of the most environmentally friendly and renewable fuels, as it is a non-polluting fuel and is made from living resources, such as vegetable oils. The steel industry generates a variety of solid wastes, including electric arc furnace slag (EAFS). The synthesis of biodiesel from waste sunflower cooking oil was examined in this study, utilizing EAFS as a catalyst, which mainly contains ferric and ferrous oxides, calcium oxide, and silica. To evaluate their impact on biodiesel production, four independent variables were chosen: temperature (50−70 °C), catalyst loading (1−5%), methanol-to-oil (M:O) molar ratio (5−20), and time (1−4 h). The response surface methodology (RSM) was used to examine the impact of independent variables on reaction response, which is the biodiesel yield. This process was carried out using a design expert program by central composite design (CCD). A model was constructed, and showed that the biodiesel yield was directly proportional to all independ... Thus, this work presents a generalized novel approach for the optimal design of both gasket and welded plate heat exchangers, with different plate geometries and flow configurations. A new design method coupled with an optimization framework is proposed to obtain the optimal solution with minimum total transfer area by setting up a series of relations between temperatures among each single-pass block with known inlet and outlet temperatures of process streams. An MINLP mathematical model is developed to select the best combination of the flow pass configuration and available commercial plate geometries within practical design constraints. The differences between the design methodology of gasket and welded PHEs are highlighted. Two case st... [more]

Suitable trajectories with minimum execution time are essential for an industrial robot to enhance productivity in pick and place operations. A novel point-to-point trajectory planning algorithm (PTPA) is proposed to improve the motion efficiency of industrial robots. The jerk profile for a trajectory model is determined by five intervals and the jerk constraint. According to the kinematic constraints and two shape coefficients, a velocity threshold and three displacement thresholds are calculated for an individual joint to transfer the proposed jerk motion profile into four specific profiles. The optimal trajectory model of the joint is developed for the minimum-time and jerk-continuous trajectory via the performance evaluation with the input displacement and three displacement thresholds. Moreover, time-based motion synchronization for all joints is taken into account in PTPA to decrease unnecessary burdens on the actuators. The simulations illustrate that the execution time by PTPA... [more]

Keywords: air classifier, classification performance, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Optimization
This paper presents the development of prediction models for pressure loss and classification efficiency in classifiers. Classifiers belong to one of the most important classification devices in gas particle processing and a fast and accurate determination of pressure loss and cut size is of great interest. The first model developed in this work allows the calculation of pressure loss as a function of geometric and operational parameters. It is based on a number of measured values that are obtained from previous numerical simulations (CFD). The maximum deviation of the model is less than 20% and the model operates in real time. However, the model requires calibration for each type of classifier. The second model for classification efficiency is based on a simplified two-dimensional approach in which the flow profile and particle trajectories are determined exclusively for the area between two classifier blades. The model is applicable for all geometrical and operational parameters and... [more]
