The high penetration of photovoltaic solar generation and electric vehicles in developing countries and with vertically integrated electricity markets with restrictive regulatory policies enhance demand management and the participation of prosumers in optimizing their resources. In this sense, the research presents a demand management methodology based on the prosumer model for recharging electric vehicles through optimization based on linear programming to minimize recharging costs, considering the stochasticity of the solar radiation variables, vehicular mobility patterns, consumer preferences, and optimal location of charging stations through surveys and predictive tools such as PVsyst and GAMS, in such a way that the energy demand for recharging electric vehicles is met. This way, the methodology reduces power demand peaks and mitigates the economic and technical impact on distribution networks. This case study has been modelled with real information from electric vehicles, distrib... [more]

Keywords: CO2 emissions, Energy Storage, hydrogen storage, integration of wind power, oil and gas offshore platforms, Optimization, power consumption
Norwegian offshore wind farms may be able to supply power to offshore oil and gas platforms in the near future thanks to the expeditious development of offshore wind technology. This would result in a reduction in CO2 emissions from oil and gas offshore installations, which are currently powered predominantly by gas turbines. The challenge with using wind power is that offshore oil and gas installations require a fairly constant and stable source of power, whereas wind power typically exhibits significant fluctuations over time. The purpose of this study is to perform a technical feasibility evaluation of using wind power to supply an offshore oil and gas installation on the basis of dynamic process simulations. Throughout the study, only the topside processing system is considered, since it is the most energy-intensive part of an oil and gas facility. An offshore field on the Norwegian Continental Shelf is used as a case study. The results indicate that, when the processing system ope... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: finite element analysis (FEA), Optimization, permanent magnet machine, torque
A novel asymmetric spoke-type interior permanent magnet (AS-IPM) machine is proposed in this paper. It utilizes the magnetic-field-shifting (MFS) effect to improve the torque performance, which achieves a high utilization ratio of both permanent magnet (PM) torque and reluctance torque. In addition, a general pattern of rotor topologies is proposed to represent all possible machine structures. Various rotor structures can be obtained by changing the design parameters of the general pattern. A non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II) is adopted to automatically search for optimal rotor configurations. With the aid of the optimization program, an asymmetric spoke-type rotor structure with improved performance is obtained. To showcase the advantages of the proposed machine, the electromagnetic performance is compared between a conventional spoke-type interior permanent magnet (S-IPM) machine and a proposed AS-IPM machine. Keywords: additive manufacturing, construction, design, diagnostics, electric machines, materials, motors, Optimization, thermal management
For several decades, the design and manufacture of electrical machines has been considered a technically mature area and, as a result, research and development in the area has been extremely limited, even though this is a crucial technology in the application of electrical energy. Electrical machines are used in over 80% of the world’s energy conversion processes—first to create electrical energy, which can be easily transmitted, and second to convert that energy into mechanical form for applications ranging from dishwashers to transportation, and from medical devices to those used for industrial processes. Today, two technologies are changing this. The first is the development of power electronic drives and the second is the introduction of additive manufacturing technology. The latter technology has opened up new areas for innovation and research, and many conventional processes are likely to become obsolete. Considering the overall consumption of electricity by electrical machines,... [more]

Keywords: flywheel battery, Genetic Algorithm, Optimization, six-pole radial–axial hybrid magnetic bearing
The six-pole radial−axial hybrid magnetic bearing (RAHMB) has the advantages of small space and low power consumption, making it suitable for flywheel batteries. The bearing capacity and the volume are the main specifications of magnetic bearings that should be considered comprehensively. In this work, the six-pole RAHMB was used in a horizontal flywheel battery. As the axial bearing capacity is relatively smaller than the radial bearing capacity, a design method with independent radial and axial bearing capacity is proposed, and the parameters are optimized to minimize the volume. The mathematical model of six-pole RAHMB was derived from the equivalent magnetic circuit method. The relationships between bearing capacity, biased flux density, saturation flux density and the section area of magnetic poles were analyzed. The basic principle of the design method with independent radial and axial bearing capacity is to determine which five of the variables are preferred. According to the de... [more]

The increasing penetration of Distributed Generators (D.G.) into the existing power system has brought some real challenges regarding the transient response of electrical systems. The injection of D.G.s and abrupt load changes may cause massive power, current, and voltage overshoots/undershoots, which consequently affects the equilibrium of the existing power system and deteriorate the performance of the connected electrical appliances. A robust and intelligent control strategy is of utmost importance to cope with these issues and enhance the penetration level of D.G.s into the existing power system. This paper presents a Modified Particle Swarm Optimization (MPSO) algorithm-based intelligent controller for attaining a desired power-sharing ratio between the M.G. and the main grid with an optimal transient response in a grid-tied Microgrid (M.G.) system. A battery-swapping station (BSS) can serve as a flexible source in distribution systems, since electric vehicle (EV) batteries can be charged at different time periods prior to their swapping at a BSS. This paper presents an EV battery service transformation from charging to swapping batteries for EVs for the capacity enhancement of a distribution system. A novel mathematical model is proposed to optimally quantify and maximize the flexibility of BSS loads in providing demand response for the utility operator while considering technical operations in the distribution grid. Keywords: battery energy storage systems, deep reinforcement learning, energy management system, microgrid, Optimization, renewable energy resources
With the development of microgrids (MGs), an energy management system (EMS) is required to ensure the stable and economically efficient operation of the MG system. In this paper, an intelligent EMS is proposed by exploiting the deep reinforcement learning (DRL) technique. DRL is employed as the effective method for handling the computation hardness of optimal scheduling of the charge/discharge of battery energy storage in the MG EMS. Since the optimal decision for charge/discharge of the battery depends on its state of charge given from the consecutive time steps, it demands a full-time horizon scheduling to obtain the optimum solution. This, however, increases the time complexity of the EMS and turns it into an NP-hard problem. By considering the energy storage system’s charging/discharging power as the control variable, the DRL agent is trained to investigate the best energy storage control method for both deterministic and stochastic weather scenarios. The efficiency of the strategy... [more]

The design of AC filters must meet the criteria of harmonic distortion mitigation and reactive power support in various operating modes. The stringent reactive power-sharing requirements currently lead to sophisticated filter schemes with high component ratings. In this regard, triple-tuned filters (TTFs) have good potential in harmonic mitigation of a broad range of harmonics. In the literature, the TTF design has been presented using a parametric method, assuming that the TTF is equivalent to a three-arm single-tuned filter (TASTF). However, no direct methods of designing it or finding its optimal parameters have been provided. This paper presents novel mathematical designs of TTFs. Three different design methods are considered—the direct triple-tuned filter (DTTF) design method, as a TASTF, and a method based on the equivalence between the two design methods called the equivalence hypothesis method to design the triple-tuned filter (EHF). The parameters of the three proposed design... [more]
