A System of Improving Energy and Ecological Efficiency, Using the Example of Fuel Oil Combustion in Power Plant Boilers
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: ecological efficiency, Energy Efficiency, environmental sustainability, fuel oil combustion, modifier, power plant boiler
Most climatic changes are not just the result of human activity, but also of business models that harm the environment. An attempt to attain an ecological balance is an answer to the challenge posed by this situation. The combustion of liquid fuels results in the atmospheric emissions of pollutants, such as nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur dioxide and hydrocarbons. To reduce emissions of these pollutants and at the same time attain an ecological balance, specific modifiers are applied. This paper presents an analysis of the energy efficiency and ecological efficiency of fuel oil combustion in power plant boilers based on the results of tests carried out by the present authors, in which a Fe/Mg/Ce modifier was used. The tests were carried out for system capacities ranging from 1 to 5 MW. It was found that savings on fuel, which resulted from the implementation of a system for the control and supervision of power plant operation, were in the range of 4 to 6%, and those resulting from the us... Energy Demand and Energy Efficiency in Developing Countries
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: ‘True’ energy efficiency, energy demand, Energy Efficiency, stochastic frontier analysis
This paper investigates relative aggregate energy efficiency for a panel of 39 developing countries by econometrically estimating an energy-demand function (EDF) using the stochastic frontier analysis (SFA) approach to provide relative energy efficiency scores over the period 1989 to 2008. Energy efficiency is arguably difficult to define or even conceptualise with several interpretations in the literature but here it is based on an economists’ perspective of efficiency. Hence, the estimates of ‘true’ energy efficiency found in the paper using this approach approximate the economically efficient use of energy capturing both technical and allocative efficiency and the results confirm that energy intensity should not be considered as a de facto standard indicator of energy efficiency. While, by controlling for a range of socio-economic factors, the measurements of energy efficiency obtained by the analysis are deemed more appropriate and hence it is argued that this analysis should be un... Areas of Fan Research—A Review of the Literature in Terms of Improving Operating Efficiency and Reducing Noise Emissions
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: centrifugal fans, Energy Efficiency, fan characteristics, noise
Fans as industrial devices are among the most significant single recipients of driving energy. Therefore, they represent an important area of energy savings to reduce CO2 emissions. The ubiquity of fans and their operation under conditions different from the optimum provides an opportunity for more significant global reductions in the energy used to drive them. The second important aspect, besides energy efficiency, related to the operation of fans is the noise they generate. This article studies fans in various operating configurations, emphasizing improving operating efficiency and reducing noise emissions. The subject matter undertaken is based on the current trends and needs of the industry, notably the ventilation and power industry. The article attempts a detailed literature review taking into account just these aspects. The paper is divided into three main sections, with an analysis of the literature in the areas of energy efficiency, considering the operation of fans with the n... [more]

A Novel Approach for Optimizing Building Energy Models Using Machine Learning Algorithms
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: building energy model, Energy, Energy Efficiency, genetic algorithms, Optimization, Python, Simulation
The current practice with building energy simulation software tools requires the manual entry of a large list of detailed inputs pertaining to the building characteristics, geographical region, schedule of operation, end users, occupancy, control aspects, and more. While these software tools allow the evaluation of the energy consumption of a building with various combinations of building parameters, with the manual information entry and considering the large number of parameters related to building design and operation, global optimization is extremely challenging. In the present paper, a novel approach is developed for the global optimization of building energy models (BEMs) using Python EnergyPlus. A Python-based script is developed to automate the data entry into the building energy modeling tool (EnergyPlus) and numerous possible designs that cover the desired ranges of multiple variables are simulated. The resulting datasets are then used to establish a surrogate BEM using an art... [more]

Subject: Process Design
Keywords: azeotropic mixture, Energy Efficiency, n-butanol, process design, recycling, separation
This paper proposes a concept of a process design for the separation and recovery of n-butanol from a five-component mixture, consisting of n-butanol, isobutanol, formaldehyde, water and methanol. The mixture is a common waste stream in the production of butylated amino resins; therefore, recovery of n-butanol is crucial to the efficiency of the process. The results show that up to 94% of the n-butanol present in the waste stream can be recovered. Under the studied conditions, 99.76% pure n-butanol can be obtained, while formaldehyde, water and methanol are present only in traces. The energy intensity of the process is estimated at 2.42 MJ/kg of purified n-butanol. The economic analysis of the process shows that the process is economically viable over a wide range of production capacities, as evidenced by high net present values and high return on investment values.

Butyl acetate (BuAc) is widely used as a solvent in many applications, mainly in the food and pharmaceutical industries. The conventional process for BuAc production is both capital and energy intensive. The purification process involves the separation of BuAc from the azeotropic mixture of water and n-butanol, which is difficult to accomplish using a simple distillation unit. In this study, a membrane reactor (MR) for BuAc production via the esterification of n-butanol was investigated. The MR using the Amberlyst-15 catalyst was modeled and validated with previously reported experimental data, and a good agreement was achieved. The ultimate conversion of n-butanol using the MR was 92.0%, compared to 69.8% for the conventional reactor. This study is the first to propose an intensified MR-based process for butyl acetate production. The MR-based process was developed and rigorously simulated using Aspen Plus for an annual plant capacity of 92,500 metric tons of BuAc. The MR-based process... [more]

Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: degree of vapor overproduction, Energy Efficiency, experimental study, interchangeable geometry, liquid–vapor ejector, vacuum unit
We consider the influence of vapor content in the mixed flow leaving a liquid-vapor ejector on the energy efficiency of a vacuum unit. As shown by numerical studies of liquid-vapor ejectors, this issue is important as vapor overproduction, which accompanies the process of secondary flow ejection, directly impacts the efficiency of the working process of both the liquid-vapor ejector and the vacuum unit as a whole. The greater the degree of vapor overproduction, the greater the load on the vapor phase of the separator, which is part of the vacuum unit. In addition, the liquid phase must be returned to the cycle to ensure the constancy of the mass flow rate of the working fluid of the primary flow. Our numerical study results revealed the rational value of the degree of vapor overproduction at which the efficiency of the liquid−vapor ejector was maximized, and the amount of additional working fluid that needed to enter the cycle of the vacuum unit was minimal. The Energy Saving Potential of Occupancy-Based Lighting Control Strategies in Open-Plan Offices: The Influence of Occupancy Patterns
January 23, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: convergence analysis, Energy Efficiency, individual occupancy, occupancy sensors, occupancy spread, office buildings, smart lighting, stochastic modeling
Occupancy-based lighting control strategies have been proven to be effective in diminishing offices’ energy consumption. These strategies have typically worked by controlling lighting at the room level but, recently, lighting systems have begun to be equipped with sensors on a more fine-grained level, enabling lighting control at the desk level. For some office cases, however, the savings gained using this strategy may not outweigh the costs and design efforts compared to room control. This is because, in some offices, individual occupancy patterns are similar, hence the difference in savings between desk and room control would be minimal. This study examined the influence of occupancy pattern variance within an office space on the relative energy savings of control strategies with different control zone sizes. We applied stochastic modeling to estimate the occupancy patterns, as this method can account for uncertainty. To validate our model, simulation results were compared to earlier... [more]

Keywords: centrifugal pump, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Energy Efficiency, fluctuation
In order to simulate the energy efficiency fluctuation behavior of an industrial centrifugal pump with a six-blade impeller, a full-scale three-dimensional (3D) an unsteady state computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was used. Five operational points with different flow fluxes were numerically investigated by using the Navier⁻Stokes code with shear-stress transport (SST) k-ω turbulence model. The predicted performance curves agreed well with the test data. A sine function was fitted to the transient calculation results and the results show that the efficiency fluctuates mainly on the blade passing frequency, while the fluctuation level varies with flow rate. Furthermore, high efficiency is not necessarily associated with low fluctuation level. The efficiency fluctuation level is high at part-load points, and becomes relatively low when flow rate exceeds the design value.
