Coal Pricing in China: Is It a Bit Too Crude?
Raymond Li, David C. Broadstock
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: China, coal price, crude oil price, methanol price, spectral Granger causality
China is a global leader in methanol production volume, while coal is a major feedstock. The country also has the world’s largest commercial coal-to-methanol operations. Coal-based methanol is used widely within China and is a competitive substitute for gasoline. Owing to this, it is plausible that the price of coal may be linked to international crude oil prices, with methanol prices serving as the connecting channel. We add supporting evidence to a recently emerging area of literature and observe statistically significant relationships among the three prices, and, therefore, the influence from international crude oil and methanol prices on the coal price determination in China. This paper investigates the relationships among these prices for the period from January 2010 to December 2019 through spectral Granger causality analysis, alongside more traditional cointegration tests to develop a comprehensive picture of causal association between the price series in both the frequency and... 3D Modeling of the Thermal Transfer through Precast Buildings Envelopes
Soukayna Berrabah, Mohamed Ould Moussa, Mohamed Bakhouya
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: building envelopes, Energy Efficiency, finite element method, heat transfer, infrared measurement
In this paper, a finite-element-based model is being introduced and developed, using the Cast3m (CEA, Paris, France) simulation tool, to evaluate the thermo-mechanical behavior of a small-scale test bed. In fact, many studies on thermal behavior of cavities have been carried out in literature. However, none of them took into account the co-existence of all thermal phenomena (conduction, convection, internal/external radiation). The work presented in this paper presents a thermo-mechanical model, which aims to combine, in a holistic way, these phenomena. An experimental validation of the thermal model has been first carried out using an infrared camera and DS18B20 (Maxim Integrated Products, Dallas, TX, USA) numerical sensors. Results are reported and show the accuracy of the proposed model since both numerical and experimental values of heat transmittance fit together. The main objective is to evaluate heat losses through the walls, by means of heat transmittance calculation, and propo... [more]
Study on the Effect of Helium on the Dielectric Strength of Medium-Voltage Vacuum Interrupters
Paweł Węgierek, Michał Lech, Damian Kostyła, Czesław Kozak
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: helium, switchgear, vacuum breakdown, vacuum interrupter, vacuum technology
This paper presents the results of a comparative analysis of the dielectric strength of disconnecting vacuum interrupters operating on air and helium. The breakdown voltage Ud was measured in the pressure range from 8.0 × 10−4 Pa to 3.0 × 101 Pa for air and from 8.0 × 10−4 Pa to 7.0 × 102 Pa for helium, while varying the interelectrode distance from 1.0 to 5.0 mm. Dedicated laboratory workstations were used to determine the actual pressure values in the vacuum interrupters tested and to precisely measure and record the dielectric strength results of the test object. It was found that the helium-filled vacuum interrupter maintains its full dielectric strength in significantly larger pressure ranges, while the air-filled vacuum interrupter loses its insulating properties. Thus, it is possible to make vacuum interrupters based on the working medium associated with pure helium, with larger working pressure ratings. Under such conditions, it is easier to maintain the tightness of the device... [more]
Prosumer Community Portfolio Optimization via Aggregator: The Case of the Iberian Electricity Market and Portuguese Retail Market
Ricardo Faia, Tiago Pinto, Zita Vale, Juan Manuel Corchado
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: aggregator, Iberian electricity market, portfolio optimization, Portuguese retail market, prosumer
The participation of household prosumers in wholesale electricity markets is very limited, considering the minimum participation limit imposed by most market participation rules. The generation capacity of households has been increasing since the installation of distributed generation from renewable sources in their facilities brings advantages for themselves and the system. Due to the growth of self-consumption, network operators have been putting aside the purchase of electricity from households, and there has been a reduction in the price of these transactions. This paper proposes an innovative model that uses the aggregation of households to reach the minimum limits of electricity volume needed to participate in the wholesale market. In this way, the Aggregator represents the community of households in market sales and purchases. An electricity transactions portfolio optimization model is proposed to enable the Aggregator reaching the decisions on which markets to participate to ma... [more]

Arkady N. Redkin, Eugene E. Yakimov, Maria V. Evstafieva, Eugene B. Yakimov
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: cathodoluminescence, photoresponse, self-catalytic CVD method, ZnO nanorod
ZnO nanorods are promising materials for many applications, in particular for UV detectors. In the present paper, the properties of high crystal quality individual ZnO nanorods and nanorod arrays grown by the self-catalytic CVD method have been investigated to assess their possible applicationsfor UV photodetectors. X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and cathodoluminescence investigations demonstrate the high quality of nanorods. The nanorod resistivity and carrier concentration in dark is estimated. The transient photocurrent response of both as grown and annealed at 550 °C nanorod array under UV illumination pulses is studied. It is shown that annealing increases the sensitivity and decreases the responsivity that is explained by oxygen out-diffusion and the formation of near surface layer enriched with oxygen vacancies. Oxygen vacancy formation due to annealing is confirmed by an increase of green emission band intensity.

Marian Niesler, Janusz Stecko, Sławomir Stelmach, Anna Kwiecińska-Mydlak
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: biochar, environmental effect, pyrolysis, residual biomass, substitutional fuel
The article presents results of the research on the use of chars produced during pyrolysis of residual biomass as a substitutional fuel in the iron ore sintering process. Such an approach allows to implement circular economy and industrial symbiosis to the iron and steel branches. The effect of the substitution of conventional coke breeze fuel used in sintering on final sinter quality and emission was examined. With regard to productivity, fuel consumption, and properties of the sinter it was shown that the share of tested biochars in fuel may be kept at 10, and up to 30 wt.%, depending on the biochar type. It was observed that with the use of the biochars, the content of iron oxide in the sinter decreased, which was advantageous. Moreover, the sinter obtained in the presence of biochars was characterized with better strength and abrasion than the sinter obtained with coke breeze-based fuel, improving the final product quality. The presence of biochar influenced the raw exhaust gas com... [more]

April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: embodied carbon emission, embodied energy, LCA, life cycle assessment
Life cycle assessment is an environmental method which estimates either a process or a building material within the cradle-to-grave cycle. Presently, it is one of a few tools that include all factors which may influence the environment. The authors used this tool to prove effects connected with potential efficient energy levels and a reduction in CO2 emissions within a building’s life cycle. For the purpose of our analyses, several types of single-family building were chosen and they were subjected to analysis in the fixed location of Warsaw. The research scope included a numerical analysis of the buildings concerning the level of embodied energies and the emission of greenhouse gases. The performed analysis proved that, within a 50-year cycle, the difference between the embodied energy from the best and worst building choices can amount to 14.87%, whereas a reduction in embodied carbon emissions can reach 20.65%. Each change in the building’s form and the type of building materials us... [more]
Large-Eddy Simulation of Wind Turbine Flows: A New Evaluation of Actuator Disk Models
Tristan Revaz, Fernando Porté-Agel
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: actuator disk models, atmospheric boundary layer, large-eddy simulation, wind turbine
Large-eddy simulation (LES) with actuator models has become the state-of-the-art numerical tool to study the complex interaction between the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) and wind turbines. In this paper, a new evaluation of actuator disk models (ADMs) for LES of wind turbine flows is presented. Several details of the implementation of such models are evaluated based on a test case studied experimentally. In contrast to other test cases used in previous similar studies, the present test case consists of a wind turbine immersed in a realistic turbulent boundary-layer flow, for which accurate data for the turbine, the flow, the thrust and the power are available. It is found that the projection of the forces generated by the turbine into the flow solver grid is crucial for rotor predictions, especially for the power, and less important for the wake flow prediction. In this context, the projection of the forces into the flow solver grid should be as accurate as possible, in order to co... [more]
Analysis of the Potential for Reducing Life Cycle Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Motor Fuels
Delfina Rogowska, Artur Wyrwa
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: GHG emission reduction, LCA, mathematical modelling, motor fuels, refinery
The assessment of life cycle greenhouse gas emissions of motor fuels is important due to the legal obligations and corporate social responsibility of the petroleum industry. Combining the Life-Cycle Assessment with optimization methods can provide valuable support in the decision-making process. In this paper, a mathematical model of a refinery was developed to analyze the impact of process optimization on GHG emissions at the fuel production stage. The model included ten major refinery units. Fuel production costs were minimized by taking into account the number of constraints. The analysis was performed in two steps. First, the model was run for the reference case of fuels composition. Then, more than twelve thousand model runs were performed. In each model, the fuel composition was changed. This change represented the exogenous pressures and resulted in different flows of mass, energy and GHG emission at the refinery. The most favorable results in terms of GHG emissions were then id... Eco-Trends in Energy Solutions on Cruise Ships
Joanna Kizielewicz
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: energy consumption, sustainable behaviour, sustainable energy transition
Today the world’s largest cruise ships can take on board more than 6000 passengers and almost 3000 crew members. Managing a significant number of people and all equipment and operations on ships requires the delivery of tens of thousands of kilowatts, which poses a huge challenge for both cruise ship builders and ports supporting these ships as well as for ship owners themselves, as the costs involved represent the largest share in the structure of expenditure in cruise shipping companies. In recent years, various communities and institutions, including the International Maritime Organisation and the European Union, exert pressure on cruise ship owners to use green renewable energy solutions. For these reasons, cruise ship owners are constantly looking for cost-effective and environmentally responsible solutions regarding new energy sources for ships. The aim of this paper is to identify modern solutions applied on cruise ships in the field of energy generation and to indicate benefits... [more]

April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: concentrated solar heat, concentrated solar thermal, control strategy, flexible heat integration, MILP, operating temperature optimization, process heat, SHIP, SIPH, system modelling
Using solar power for industrial process heat is an increasing trend to fight against climate change thanks to renewable heat. Process heat demand and solar flux can both present intermittency issues in industrial systems, therefore solar systems with storage introduce a degree of freedom on which optimization, on a mathematical basis, can be performed. As the efficiency of solar thermal receivers varies as a function of temperature and solar flux, it seems natural to consider an optimization on the operating temperature of the solar field. In this paper, a Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) algorithm is developed to optimize the operating temperature in a system consisting of a concentrated solar thermal field with storage, hybridized with a boiler. The MILP algorithm optimizes the control trajectory on a time horizon of 48 h in order to minimize boiler use. Objective function corresponds to the boiler use, for completion of the heat from the solar field, whereas the linear const... [more]

April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: graphene nano-platelets, heat transfer enhancement, latent heat storage (LHS), shell-and-tube heat exchanger, solidification, thermal energy storage (TES)
Technological development in latent heat storage (LHS) systems is essential for energy security and energy management for both renewable and non-renewable sources. In this article, numerical analyses on a shell-and-tube-based LHS system with coupled thermal enhancement through extended fins and nano-additives are conducted to propose optimal combinations for guaranteed higher discharging rate, enthalpy capacity and thermal distribution. Transient numerical simulations of fourteen scenarios with varied combinations are investigated in three-dimensional computational models. The shell-and-tube includes paraffin as phase change material (PCM), longitudinal, radial and wire-wound fins and graphene nano-platelets (GNP) as extended fins and nano-additives, respectively. The extended fins have demonstrated better effectiveness than nano-additives. For instance, the discharging durations for paraffin with longitudinal, radial and wire-wound fins are shortened by 88.76%, 95.13% and 96.44% as co... [more]
Implementing an Extended Kalman Filter for SoC Estimation of a Li-Ion Battery with Hysteresis: A Step-by-Step Guide
Benedikt Rzepka, Simon Bischof, Thomas Blank
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery modeling, extended Kalman filter, hysteresis, Li-ion batteries, process noise, state of charge estimation
The growing share of renewable energies in power production and the rise of the market share of battery electric vehicles increase the demand for battery technologies. In both fields, a predictable operation requires knowledge of the internal battery state, especially its state of charge (SoC). Since a direct measurement of the SoC is not possible, Kalman filter-based estimation methods are widely used. In this work, a step-by-step guide for the implementation and tuning of an extended Kalman filter (EKF) is presented. The structured approach of this paper reduces efforts compared with empirical filter tuning and can be adapted to various battery models, systems, and cell types. This work can act as a tutorial describing all steps to get a working SoC estimator based on an extended Kalman filter.

Subject: Materials
Keywords: circular economy, dye sensitized solar cell, healthy energy systems, non-toxic materials, recycling, Sustainability
In times of climate change and dwindling fossil resources, the need for sustainable renewable energy technologies gains importance, increasingly fast. However, the state of the art technologies are energy intensive in their production, like monocrystalline photovoltaic, or even consist of not recyclable composite material, in the case of wind turbine blades. Despite a lack in efficiency and stability, dye sensitized solar cells (DSSC) have a high potential to supplement the state of the art green energy technology in future. With low production costs and no necessity for toxic compounds DSSCs are a potential product, which could circulate in the loops of a circular economy. Therefore, with this paper, we provide the status of research on DSSC recycling and an outlook on how recycling streams could be realized in the future for glass-based DSSCs without toxic components. The overview includes work on using recycled material to build DSSCs and extending the life of a DSSC, e.g., through... [more]

April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery storage, concentrated solar power, electrical load, electricity supply, levelised cost of electricity, mining, photovoltaics, thermal storage
The drought that occurred in Zimbabwe in 2020 affected the country’s main hydro-power station causing the electricity supply to be less secure and reliable. This challenge resulted in load-shedding, which is not desirable to mining companies that require constant and reliable power for their operations. In that regard, a techno-economic analysis was carried out to assess the potential of integrating concentrated solar power (+thermal storage) and photovoltaics (+battery storage) to supply power at a typical mine in Zimbabwe. Two scenarios were simulated—a base case with no exports to the grid and another case where exports were allowed. The models were evaluated based on the generated renewable energy offsetting the demand from the mine, the energy exported, the grid contribution, the levelised cost of electricity and the net present value. The results show that the addition of a battery storage system to PV improves the percentage of the load offset by the renewable system and the gen... [more]
Design of Outer-Rotor Permanent-Magnet-Assisted Synchronous Reluctance Motor for Electric Vehicles
Armagan Bozkurt, Ahmet Fevzi Baba, Yusuf Oner
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: design, FEM, outer rotor, PMaSynRM, synchronous reluctance motor (SynRM)
Today’s automotive industry has focused its studies on electric vehicles (EVs) or hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) rather than gasoline-powered vehicles. For this reason, more investment has been made in electric motors with high efficiency, high torque density, and high-power factor to be used in both EVs and HEVs. In this study, an outer-rotor permanent-magnet-assisted synchronous reluctance motor (PMaSynRM) with a new rotor topology was designed for use in an EV. The design has a transversally laminated anisotropic (TLA) rotor structure. In addition, neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) magnets were used in rotor topology. The stator slots were designed as distributed windings, so torque ripples are minimized. At the same time, the maximum electromagnetic torque was achieved. The analysis of the designed motor was carried out using the finite element method (FEM). Optimal values of motor parameters were obtained by improving the rotor geometry of the three-phase PMaSynRM in order to obtain m... [more]

Biogas development is expected to contribute to the National Recovery and Resilience plan to overcome the COVID-19 shock. Estimation of the agricultural biogas potential in economic terms can contribute to refining policies inciting effective sector development. In this paper, we attempt to do so by modeling a biogas chain from dedicated crops and livestock waste. This was achieved by coupling farming models to the biogas industry in a partial equilibrium framework. This allows for a comprehensive investigation of alternative measures in technology, size, spatial distribution and land use change. The integrated model was implemented in Lubelskie for the previous policy (green certificates) and the current policy (auction market). In both cases, the bottom-up profit driven optimization resulted in approximately 40 MWel, which shows a robust economic potential more than four times the biogas sector’s actual capacity in the region, also providing the detailed structure of the sector. Ocean renewable wave power is one of the more encouraging inexhaustible energy sources, with the potential to be exploited for nearly 337 GW worldwide. However, compared with other sources of renewables, wave energy technologies have not been fully developed, and the produced energy price is not as competitive as that of wind or solar renewable technologies. In order to commercialise ocean wave technologies, a wide range of optimisation methodologies have been proposed in the last decade. However, evaluations and comparisons of the performance of state-of-the-art bio-inspired optimisation algorithms have not been contemplated for wave energy converters’ optimisation. In this work, we conduct a comprehensive investigation, evaluation and comparison of the optimisation of the geometry, tether angles and power take-off (PTO) settings of a wave energy converter (WEC) using bio-inspired swarm-evolutionary optimisation algorithms based on a sample wave regime at a site in the Mediterranean S... April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electric vehicle, gear meshing ratio, gear reference efficiency, planetary gear, transmission
As environmental regulations have been strengthened worldwide since the Paris Climate Agreement, the automobile industry is shifting its production paradigm to focus on eco-friendly vehicles such as electric vehicles and hydrogen-battery vehicles. Governments are banning fossil fuel vehicles by law and expanding the introduction of green vehicles. The energy efficiency of electric vehicles that use a limited power source called batteries depends on the driving environment. Applying a two-speed transmission to an electric vehicle can optimize average speed and performance efficiency at low speeds, and achieve maximum speed with minimal torque at high speeds. In this study, a two-speed transmission for an electric vehicle has been developed, to be used in a compact electric vehicle. This utilizes a planetary gear of a total of three pairs, made of a single module which was intended to enable two-speed. The ring gear was removed, and the carrier was used in common. When shifting, the ener... [more]

Keywords: conditional value at risk (CVaR), multi-source power system, pre-dispatching, scenario analysis method, typhoon wind circle model
Typhoons and other natural disasters affect the normal operation of power systems thus it is an important goal for strong and intelligent power grid construction to improve the ability of power systems to resist typhoons and other natural disasters. Especially, an effective coordinated and optimized dispatching strategy for a multi-source power system is greatly helpful to cope with the impact of typhoons and other natural disasters on power system operation. Given this background, a typhoon wind circle model considering the temporal and spatial distribution of typhoons is established to obtain the input wind speed of the wind farm at first. Second, based on the initial input wind speed of wind farms, a typical scenario set of wind power output is constructed to reflect its fluctuation and uncertainty. Next, an optimal coordinated dispatching model of a multi-source power system with wind, hydro and thermal power based on the conditional value at risk (CVaR) is established with the tar... [more]

Neil Stephen Lopez, Adrian Allana, Jose Bienvenido Manuel Biona
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery charging, discrete event simulation, electric vehicles, electricity demand, Monte Carlo method
Electric vehicle (EV) use is growing at a steady rate globally. Many countries are planning to ban internal combustion engines by 2030. One of the key issues needed to be addressed before the full-scale deployment of EVs is ensuring energy security. Various studies have developed models to simulate and study hourly electricity demand from EV charging. In this study, we present an improved model based on discrete event simulation, which allows for modeling characteristics of individual EV users, including the availability of electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) outside homes and the charging threshold of each EV user. The model is illustrated by simulating 1000 random electric vehicles generated using data from an actual survey. The results agree with previous studies that daily charging demands do not significantly vary. However, the results show a significant shift in charging schedule during weekends. Moreover, the simulation demonstrated that the charging peak demand can be redu... [more]

Keywords: ammonia, hydrogen storage, renewable energy storage
Global energy sources are being transformed from hydrocarbon-based energy sources to renewable and carbon-free energy sources such as wind, solar and hydrogen. The biggest challenge with hydrogen as a renewable energy carrier is the storage and delivery system’s complexity. Therefore, other media such as ammonia for indirect storage are now being considered. Research has shown that at reasonable pressures, ammonia is easily contained as a liquid. In this form, energy density is approximately half of that of gasoline and ten times more than batteries. Ammonia can provide effective storage of renewable energy through its existing storage and distribution network. In this article, we aimed to analyse the previous studies and the current research on the preparation of ammonia as a next-generation renewable energy carrier. The study focuses on technical advances emerging in ammonia synthesis technologies, such as photocatalysis, electrocatalysis and plasmacatalysis. Ammonia is now also stro... [more]

Keywords: cyclic exploration-exploitation strategy, optimization methods, parameter estimation, photovoltaic units, ranking method, three-diode model, whale optimization algorithm
Efficient and accurate estimations of unidentified parameters of photovoltaic (PV) models are essential to their simulation. This study suggests two new variants of the whale optimization algorithm (WOA) for identifying the nine parameters of the three-diode PV model. The first variant abbreviated as RWOA is based on integrating the WOA with ranking methods under a novel updating scheme to utilize each whale within the population as much as possible during the optimization process. The second variant, namely HWOA, has been based on employing a novel cyclic exploration-exploitation operator with the RWOA to promote its local and global search for averting stagnation into local minima and accelerating the convergence speed in the right direction of the near-optimal solution. Experimentally, RWOA and HWOA are validated on a solar cell (RTC France) and two PV modules (Photowatt-PWP201 and Kyocera KC200GT). Further, these proposed variants are compared with five well-known parameter extract... [more]
What Can Politics Learn from Management Decisions? A Case Study of Germany’s Exit from Nuclear Energy after Fukushima

April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: decision-making, energy security, energy transition, Fukushima, green energy reliability, nuclear energy, political economy, risk analysis
The devastating nuclear disaster in Fukushima, Japan, in 2011, which was triggered by a tsunami in the wake of an earthquake, resulted in the decision to quickly phase out nuclear power and with it implicitly accelerated the German Energiewende (energy transition). To the outside observer, the decision appeared to be spontaneous and possibly due to a distorted perception of the associated risks of nuclear power. From the decision results not only the limiting uses of private property by conventional energy providers, but the exit from nuclear energy has also implications for the energy market. As with every human, political actors decide under uncertainty and incomplete information. Based on these parameters, we emphasize that the decision of a political actor is comparable to management decision-making. The paper takes this as an opportunity to examine the political decision to phase-out nuclear energy by discussing relevant parameters from the perspective of decision theory. We plead... [more]
Behavioural Change in Green Transportation: Micro-Economics Perspectives and Optimization Strategies

April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: demand response, elasticity, electric vehicle charging, indirect control, Optimization
The increasing demand for Electric Vehicle (EV) charging is putting pressure on the power grids and capacities of charging stations. This work focuses on how to use indirect control through price signals to level out the load curve in order to avoid the power consumption from exceeding these capacities. We propose mathematical programming models for the indirect control of EV charging that aim at finding an optimal set of price signals to be sent to the drivers based on price elasticities. The objective is to satisfy the demand for a given price structure, or minimize the curtailment of loads, when there is a shortage of capacity. The key contribution is the use of elasticity matrices through which it is possible to estimate the EV drivers’ reactions to the price signals. As real-world data on relating the elasticity values to the EV driver’s behaviour are currently non-existent, we concentrate on sensitivity analysis to test how different assumptions on elasticities affect the optimal...
