Analysis of Application of Plasma Ignition in Closed Vessel Tests
Radosław Trębiński, Zbigniew Leciejewski, Zbigniew Surma, Jakub Michalski
April 25, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: closed vessel test, gun propellant, gunpowder ignition, plasma ignition
This paper presents the results of a comparative investigation into the effects of the ignition method on the ballistic properties of three types of propellants: a single-base propellant, a double-base propellant and a low vulnerability (LOVA) propellant, as determined via closed vessel tests (CVT). Conventional gunpowder ignition and plasma jet ignition methods were used. The influence of the ignition method on the values of the propellant characteristics obtained in CVT was analysed. It was found that the method of ignition has an influence on the values of propellant characteristics, determined in CVT. An analysis of the experimental form functions showed that plasma ignition is not a solution to the problems inherent to the process of determining the ballistic properties of propellants in which the burning process deviates from the geometric burning law.

Paweł Michnikowski, Tomasz Cholewa
April 25, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Energy Efficiency, heat allocation, heat cost allocator, heat metering, heating costs, multi-family buildings, residential sector
Heat cost allocators (HCAs) have a high market share in existing buildings, which may cause problems, especially with variable heat cost allocation due to wrong readings from HCAs and/or the method used in the heat cost allocation process. That is why we proposed two easily applicable and clear methods, which may be used with two types of HCAs commonly used in the billing practice. The proposed methods were presented on the example of the actual allocation of variable heating costs for a multi-family building located in Poland, and the results of billing were compared with three other methods of variable heating costs allocation. Owing to the proposed methods, higher (K = 0.5260 for schema A, K = 0.4468 for schema B) values of the correlation coefficient between heating costs and the average indoor temperature were obtained than for the methods commonly used in accounting practice. Additionally, the use of the proposed method allows for the elimination of defective indications of heat... [more]

Keywords: complex fracture network inversion, hydraulic fracture monitoring, multiobjective optimization, tight reservoir
The fracturing technique is widely used in many fields. Fracture has a greater impact on the movement of fluids in formations. Knowing information about a fracture is key to judging its effect, but detailed information about complex fracture networks is difficult to obtain. In this paper, we propose a new method to describe the shape of a complex fracture network. This method is based on microseismic results and uses the L-system to establish a method for characterizing a complex fracture network. The method also combines with decomposition to construct a new method called the multiobjective fracture network inversion algorithm based on decomposition (MOFNIAD). The coverage of microseismic monitoring results and the degree of fitting of production data are the two objective functions of the inversion fracture network. The multiobjective fracture network inversion algorithm can be optimized to obtain multiple optimal solutions that meet different target weights. Therefore, this paper es... [more]

April 25, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: grid load, regional power grid, source-load timing matching coefficient, volatility-based smoothing coefficient, wind power output
The quantitative evaluation of cluster wind power output volatility and source-load timing matching is vital to the planning and operation of the future power system dominated by new energy. However, the existing volatility evaluation methods of cluster wind power output do not fully consider timing volatility, or are not suitable for small sample data scenarios. Meanwhile, the existing source-load timing matching evaluation indicator ignores the impact of wind power permeability on the timing matching degree between wind power output and load. Therefore, the authors propose quantitative evaluation methods of cluster wind power output volatility and source-load timing matching in regional power grid. Firstly, the volatility-based smoothing coefficient is defined to quantitatively evaluate the smoothing effect of wind-farm cluster power output. Then, the source-load timing matching coefficient considering wind power permeability is proposed to quantitatively evaluate the timing matching... [more]

April 25, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy consumption, Energy Efficiency, railway
Railway transit forms the backbone of sustainable transportation systems, which are necessary to limit the effects of global warming. In this paper, the authors seek to determine whether there is a statistically significant difference in energy consumption between distinct railway vehicle types. Firstly, the energy consumption measurement methods in the railway transportation sector are described and compared to each other in respect to precision and cost. Secondly, the use of energy consumption as a criterion in rolling stock tenders with the associated norm is analysed, particularly with regard to the life-cycle cost of railway vehicles. In the next part real life data on energy consumption of six distinct passenger electrical railway vehicle types is presented and analysed in order to compare the efficiency of different types of rolling stock. The differences in energy efficiency between rolling stock types may be used to improve the procurement process ensuring train operating comp... [more]

April 25, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: emissions, Ethanol, performance biofuel, pyrolysis biofuel, spark ignition engine, waste valorisation
The use of biofuels for spark ignition engines is proposed to diversify fuel sources and reduce fossil fuel consumption, optimize engine performance, and reduce pollutant emissions. Additionally, when these biofuels are produced from low-grade wastes, they constitute valorisation pathways for these otherwise unprofitable wastes. In this study, ethanol and pyrolysis biogasoline made from low-grade wastes were evaluated as additives for commercial gasoline (RON95, RON98) in tests performed in a spark ignition engine. Binary fuel mixtures of ethanol + gasoline or biogasoline + gasoline with biofuel incorporation of 2% (w/w) to 10% (w/w) were evaluated and compared with ternary fuel mixtures of ethanol + biogasoline + gasoline with biofuel incorporation rates from 1% (w/w) to 5% (w/w). The fuel mix performance was assessed by determination of torque and power, fuel consumption and efficiency, and emissions (HC, CO, and NOx). An electronic control unit (ECU) was used to regulate the air−fue... [more]

Keywords: CO2 generation, degasification, Gas Dynamic Phenomena, permeability
In the last decades, rigorous research has been carried out with the end of understanding the gas dynamic phenomenon and although different preventive techniques have been employed, even today there are numerous accidents even with the loss of life. This work analyses an alternative and innovative method of fracturing and degassing coal, by generating CO2 with a pyrotechnic device called PYROC (Pyrotechnic Break Cartridges). Medium-scale tests of generation of CO2 into coal samples are carried out and their effect is analysed comparing the initial and final permeabilities of the coal samples once the generation of CO2 has finished. These permeabilities are calculated by injecting methane. Besides, the influence of different parameters as the length of the boreholes, the pressure of the gas or the initial permeability of the coal have been analysed with a numerical simulation of one face of one of the sublevels of a mine. The results show that the method increases the safety in mining o... [more]

Keywords: bumpless transfer, global stability, integral sliding mode control, multiple Lyapunov function, turbofan engine, uncertain switched system
Nonlinear control problems in turbofan engines are challenging. No single nonlinear controller can achieve desired control effects in a full flight envelope, but in the case of multiple controllers, there exist problems in the bumpless transfer between different controllers. To this end, this paper presents a bumpless transfer mechanism for an uncertain switched system based on integral sliding mode control (ISMC), and the mechanism can be used for the speed control of turbofan engines. The uncertain switched system is used to describe the turbofan engine dynamics. Then, the ISMC controller is derived for subsystems of the uncertain switched system. A resetting scheme is introduced for the ISMC controller to ensure the continuity of control inputs during the controller transition, as well as the bumpless transfer. In view of the transient behavior caused by controller switching, the global stability of the switched system is analyzed using the multiple Lyapunov function approach and av... [more]

April 25, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: actuator cylinder, renewable marine energy, tidal parcs, vertical axis tidal turbine
Vertical axis turbines, which extract kinetic energy from currents, can produce electricity independently from a current’s direction. Hence, this type of turbines raises interest for harvesting energy from tidal currents, where flow changes direction during flood and ebb tides, and where currents present large variation of direction during tide. Methods for representing vertical axis turbines in tidal farms should be implemented in order to predict correctly power production with an acceptable time cost. The Actuator Cylinder (AC) is one of them. Numerical results in terms of wakes, with the study of velocity profiles, and efforts are compared to experiences, as well as showed that the method is sufficiently accurate and for a reasonable computing time, which is of prime importance for tidal turbines farms studies. The Actuator Cylinder method is implemented in ANSYS Fluent in a 2D stationary resolution. The method is then applied to a double levels of two counter-rotating rotors marin... [more]

April 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: frequency support, grid frequency analysis, mechanical loads, rate of change of frequency, synthetic inertia, wind turbine, wind turbine generator
In many electrical grids, the share of renewable energy generation increases. As these generators are typically connected to the grid via inverters, the level of grid inertia decreases. Such grids may therefore suffer from high rates of change of frequency during power imbalances. Modern wind turbines can help in controlling the frequency in such grids by providing synthetic inertia. A controller to provide synthetic inertia with wind turbines was developed at the Wind Energy Technology Institute in collaboration with Suzlon Energy. For this controller the influence of providing synthetic inertia on the mechanical loads of the wind turbine is assessed for different grid frequency scenarios. Such a scenario-based load analysis has not been published before, especially as the scenarios are derived from real measurements. The effect of the loads strongly depends on the analyzed grid frequency behavior. Ten months of high quality grid frequency measurements of the Indian grid are analyzed... [more]

Keywords: current-voltage measurements, CZTS, kesterite, Raman scattering, thin-film solar cells
In the present study, we provide useful data related to one of the most promising materials in thin-film solar cell technologies: Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) kesterite structures. Sol-gel spin coating and chemical bath deposition methods were used to fabricate and further investigate Mo/CZTS/CdS/ZnO/AZO heterostructures. In order to examine the crystal structure of the samples, Raman scattering measurements using two excitation wavelengths (514.5 nm and 785 nm) were performed. Three Raman bands related to CZTS were found, as well as one that had its origin in CdS. By using laser ablation and performing Raman spectroscopy on these modified samples, it was shown that during the manufacturing process a MoS2 interlayer was formed between the CZTS and Mo layers. Our method proved that the CZTS layer in a multilayer device structure fabricated by solution-based methods can be decomposed, and thus a detailed analysis of the layer can be performed. Subsequently, current-voltage curves were investigated i... [more]

Keywords: bimetallic catalyst, biofuel, modifier, reforming of bioethanol, renewable hydrogen
Autothermal reforming of bioethanol (ATR of C2H5OH) over promoted Ni/Ce0.8La0.2O1.9 catalysts was studied to develop carbon-neutral technologies for hydrogen production. The regulation of the functional properties of the catalysts was attained by adjusting their nanostructure and reducibility by introducing various types and content of M promoters (M = Pt, Pd, Rh, Re; molar ratio M/Ni = 0.003−0.012). The composition−characteristics−activity correlation was determined using catalyst testing in ATR of C2H5OH, thermal analysis, N2 adsorption, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and EDX analysis. It was shown that the type and content of the promoter, as well as the preparation mode (combined or sequential impregnation methods), determine the redox properties of catalysts and influence the textural and structural characteristics of the samples. The reducibility of catalysts improves in the following sequence of promoters: Re < Rh < Pd < Pt, with an increase in the... [more]

The main objective of the paper was comparative analyses of natural gas quantities delivered through the existing pipeline capacities in the last decade and new pipeline capacities for the prediction of possible future flows of gas import to Europe. Changes in physical flows have been influenced by European energy strategies that became green oriented resulting with a high amount of non-utilized transmission capacities. The research findings have shown that there is a significant decrease observed in transit of Russian gas through Ukraine in 2020 than previously. Concerning the high increase of LNG import to Europe in the same year, the start of operation of TurkStream, planned start of operation of Nord stream 2, authors project the gradual decrease of transit of Russian gas through Ukraine until the year 2025 with the total stop of transit of Russian gas until the year 2030. The change of supply routes will be also under the economic influence of low gas prices and coal and gas fuel... [more]

Keywords: combustion, ignition thresholds, methane, particles, thermal radiation
The prevention and evaluation of explosions requires suitable standards of measurement. As such, for this study two ignition thresholds, the ignition temperature and the minimum ignition irradiance were selected as the assessment criteria. These ignition threshold values were experimentally determined by heating stationary inert silicon carbide particles via thermal radiation with a large spot size in order to ignite quiescent methane-air fuel mixtures. A high-speed Schlieren camera was used to capture the progression of the formation and propagation of the flames throughout the experiments. The results of the experiments show that the irradiance and temperature threshold are directly and inversely proportional to the particle size, respectively. Furthermore, the irradiance and temperature thresholds have similar tendencies within the flammability limits; wherein, the minimum value corresponds to fuel mixtures at a stoichiometric ratio, and increases as the equivalence ratio shifts tow... April 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: aerodynamic performance, diffuser hade angle, pressure recovery, strut geometry, turbine exhaust diffuser
In this study, we numerically investigated the effects of design parameters, such as the strut geometry or diffusion angle, on the performance of an industrial turbine exhaust diffuser. Turbine exhaust diffusers are commonly used to change the kinetic energy of exhaust gases from the outlet of turbine stages into the static pressure. The turbine exhaust diffuser investigated in this work consisted of an annular diffuser with five identical struts equally spaced around the front circumference and a conical diffuser with a hub extension at the rear. Four design parameters were considered and several values for each parameter were tested in this study. The aerodynamic performances of the studied diffusers were evaluated according to their pressure recovery coefficients and rates of total pressure loss. Contours for the velocity, pressure, and entropy increase were plotted and compared for the various diffuser shapes. The numerical results showed that the strut thickness and the axially sw... [more]

Keywords: heat exchangers, thermocouple, thermoelectric generators, waste heat
One of the methods of converting thermal energy into electricity is the use of thermoelectric generators (TEG). The method can be used in low-temperature waste heat conversion systems from industrial installations, but its serious limitation is the low efficiency of thermolectric generators and the relatively low power of the electric waveforms obtained. Increasing the obtained power values is done by multiplying the number of TEGs used, grouped into modules (MTEG). In such systems, the design of the module is extremely important, as it should ensure the best possible heat transfer between both sides of the TEG (hot and cold), and thus obtaining maximum electrical power. The article presents an analysis of a two-section flat plate heat hot side exchanger MTEG. The key parameters like effectiveness of exchange and MTEG efficiency and their impact on the efficiency of heat use and generated electric power were indicated. The tests showed an improvement in these main system parameters for... [more]

Keywords: FAST, fault-tolerant control, fuzzy logic, power derating, wind turbine
Wind energy is a form of renewable energy with the highest installed capacity. However, it is necessary to reduce the operation and maintenance costs and extend the lifetime of wind turbines to make wind energy more competitive. This paper presents a power-derating-based Fault-Tolerant Control (FTC) model in 2 MW three-bladed wind turbines implemented using the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s (NREL) Fatigue, Aerodynamics, Structures, and Turbulence (FAST) wind turbine simulator. This control strategy is potentially supported by the health status of the gearbox, which was predicted by means of algorithms and quantified in an indicator denominated as a merge developed by SMARTIVE, a pioneering of in this idea. Fuzzy logic was employed in order to decide whether to down-regulate the output power or not, and to which level to adjust to the needs of the turbines. Simulation results demonstrated that a reduction in the power output resulted in a safer operation, since the stresses wit... [more]

Keywords: earthquake intensity measure, lead rubber bearing, nuclear power plant structure, optimality, probabilistic seismic demand model, time-history analysis
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the optimal earthquake intensity measures (IMs) for probabilistic seismic demand models (PSDMs) of the base-isolated nuclear power plant (NPP) structures. The numerical model of NPP structures is developed using a lumped-mass stick model, in which a bilinear model is employed to simulate the force-displacement relations of base isolators. In this study, 20 different IMs are considered and 90 ground motion records are used to perform time-history analyses. The seismic engineering demand parameters (EDPs) are monitored in terms of maximum floor displacement (MFD), the maximum floor acceleration (MFA) of the structures, and maximum isolator displacement (MID). As a result, a set of PSDMs of the base-isolated structure is developed based on three EDPs (i.e., MFD, MFA, and MID) associated with 20 IMs. Four statistical parameters including the coefficient of determination, efficiency (i.e., standard deviation), practicality, and proficiency are then c... Keywords: energy management, hybrid power systems, renewable energy sources, small hydropower plant, variable speed operation
Hybrid hydro energy systems are usually analysed with pumped hydro storage systems, which can facilitate energy accumulation from other sources. Despite the lack of water storage, run-of-the-river hydropower plants are also attractive for hybrid systems owing to their low investment cost, short construction time, and small environmental impact. In this study, a hybrid system that contains run-of-the-river small hydro power plants (SHPs), PV systems, and batteries to serve local loads is examined. Low-power and low-head schemes that use variable-speed operation are considered. The novelty of this study is the proposal of a dedicated steady-state model of the run-of-the-river hydropower plant that is suitable for energy production analysis under different hydrological conditions. The presented calculations based on a real SHP of 150 kW capacity have shown that a simplified method can result in a 43% overestimation of the produced energy. Moreover, a one-year analysis of a hybrid system o... [more]

Keywords: distributed bragg reflector (DBR), mid-infrared (MIR), porous anodic alumina (PAA), porous photonic crystals, structural engineering, transmission spectra
A robust and reliable method for fabricating porous anodic alumina (PAA)-based distributed Bragg reflectors (DBRs), operating in mid-infrared (MIR) spectral region, is presented. The method relies on application of high (UH) and low (UL) voltage pulse sequence repeated in cycles. PAA-based DBR consists of alternating high-(dH) and low-porosity (dL) layers translated directly into periodically varied refractive index. Two anodization modes were used: time- and charge density-controlled mode. The former generated dH + dL pairs with non-uniform thickness (∆d) and effective refractive index (∆neff). It is supposed, that owing to a compensation effect between the ∆d and ∆n, the photonic stopbands (PSBs) were symmetrical and intensive (transmittance close to zero). Under the charge density-controlled mode dH + dL pairs of uniform thickness were formed. However, the remaining ∆neff provided an asymmetrical broadening of PSBs. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the spectral position of the P... [more]

Keywords: design optimization, fatigue testing, flexure spring, free-piston Stirling engine, thermal cycle
The free-piston Stirling engine is a closed-cycle regenerative heat engine that converts heat energy into mechanical work, and requires a spring element for vibratory operations of the displacer and power pistons. In this study, the geometry of the flexural spring design was optimized through structural finite element analyses and fatigue test evaluations. First, we constructed a target design space considering the required natural frequency of the displacer spring assembly under the geometric constraints of total mass and module height. The design of experiments was employed to construct simulation cases for design factors such as the outer diameter, thickness, and number of spirals in the spring sheet. As a result, the optimized design values were obtained to satisfy the design requirements. We also fabricated a test spring specimen and conducted fatigue tests using a linear actuator system developed to have the same motion as the engine. The test results indicated that the optimized...
