Open Dual Cycle with Composition Change and Limited Pressure for Prediction of Miller Engines Performance and Its Turbine Temperature
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Dual cycle, internal combustion, Miller and Atkinson cycle, reciprocating engine, turbocharging
An improved thermodynamic open Dual cycle is proposed to simulate the working of internal combustion engines. It covers both spark ignition and Diesel types through a sequential heat release. This study proposes a procedure that includes (i) the composition change caused by internal combustion, (ii) the temperature excursions, (iii) the combustion efficiency, (iv) heat and pressure losses, and (v) the intake valve timing, following well-established methodologies. The result leads to simple analytical expressions, valid for portable models, optimization studies, engine transformations, and teaching. The proposed simplified model also provides the working gas properties and the amount of trapped mass in the cylinder resulting from the exhaust and intake processes. This allows us to yield explicit equations for cycle work and efficiency, as well as exhaust temperature for turbocharging. The model covers Atkinson and Miller cycles as particular cases and can include irreversibilities in co... [more]

Cost-Effective Increase of Photovoltaic Electricity Feed-In on Congested Transmission Lines: A Case Study of The Netherlands
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery, congestion, network/PV capacity optimisation, PV plant/system design, solar energy curtailment, transmission grid
In many areas in the world, the high voltage (HV) electricity grid is saturated, which makes it difficult to accommodate additional solar photovoltaic (PV) systems connection requests. In this paper, different scenarios to increase the installed PV capacity in a saturated grid are assessed on the basis of the net present value (NPV). The developed scenarios compare an increase of grid capacity, PV system azimuth variation, curtailment, and battery storage. For each scenario the net present value (NPV) is assessed using an optimization model as a function of the overbuild capacity factor, which is defined as the relative amount of PV capacity added beyond the available capacity. The scenarios are applied on a case study of the Netherlands, and the analysis shows that, by optimising curtailment, a PV system’s capacity can be increased to 120% overbuild capacity. For larger overbuild capacity investments in the electricity-grid are preferred when these costs are taken into account. Howeve... [more]

FFMCP: Feed-Forward Multi-Clustering Protocol Using Fuzzy Logic for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs)
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: fuzzy inference system, multi-clustering protocol, unequal clustering, wireless sensor network
The restriction on the battery life of sensors is a bottleneck for wireless sensor networks (WSNs). This paper proposes a new feed-forward multi-clustering protocol (FFMCP) to boost the network lifetime. The utilization of fuzzy logic helps to overcome the uncertainties in the value of input parameters. The proposed protocol selects the most suitable cluster heads (CHs) using the multi-clustering method. A multi-clustering technique is defined utilizing the node’s information of the previous round and a fuzzy inference system to decide the CHs. The sensor nodes spend energy due to non-uniform CH distribution and long-distance data transmission by member nodes. The main focus of the proposed protocol is to reduce the member node distance. Our proposal distributes CH nodes uniformly using unequal clustering. The simulation outcome reveals that the proposed algorithm(FFMCP) has better performance in terms of tenth node death (TND), half node death (HND), remaining energy after 800 rounds... [more]

Implications on Feedstock Processing and Safety Issues for Semi-Batch Operations in Supercritical Water Gasification of Biomass
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biomass gasification, operational issues, process operation, supercritical water
Biomass with a large amount of moisture is well-suited to be processed by supercritical water gasification, SCWG. The precipitation of inorganics, together with char formation and re-polymerization, can cause reactor plugging and stop the process operations. When plugging occurs, sudden injections of relatively large mass quantities take place, influencing the mass flow dynamics significantly in the process. Reactor plugging is a phenomenon very well observed during SCWG of industrial feedstock, which hinders scale-up initiatives, and it is seldom studied with precision in the literature. The present study provides an accurate evaluation of continuous tubular reactor dynamics in the event of sudden injections of water. An interpretation of the results regarding water properties at supercritical conditions contributes to comprehending mass and heat transfer when plugging occurs. Experiments are then compared to SCWG of a biomass sample aiming to give key insights into heat transfer and... [more]

Risk Assessment of the Large-Scale Hydrogen Storage in Salt Caverns
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: hydrogen contamination, risk analysis, underground hydrogen storage
Salt caverns are accepted as an ideal solution for high-pressure hydrogen storage. As well as considering the numerous benefits of the realization of underground hydrogen storage (UHS), such as high energy densities, low leakage rates and big storage volumes, risk analysis of UHS is a required step for assessing the suitability of this technology. In this work, a preliminary quantitative risk assessment (QRA) was performed by starting from the worst-case scenario: rupture at the ground of the riser pipe from the salt cavern to the ground. The influence of hydrogen contamination by bacterial metabolism was studied, considering the composition of the gas contained in the salt caverns as time variable. A bow-tie analysis was used to highlight all the possible causes (basic events) as well as the outcomes (jet fire, unconfined vapor cloud explosion (UVCE), toxic chemical release), and then, consequence and risk analyses were performed. The results showed that a UVCE is the most frequent ou... [more]

Using Thermal Energy Storage to Relieve Wind Generation Curtailment in an Island Microgrid
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: combined heat and power (CHP), island microgrid, thermal energy storage (TES), wind generation curtailment
The uncertainty and intermittency of the available wind resource in nature would potentially cause wind generation curtailment when the flexibility of the integrated power grid is limited, especially in small-scale microgrids for islands. In this paper, an optimal configuration method is proposed to use thermal energy storage (TES) to relieve wind generation curtailment in an island microgrid. The thermal network is modeled along with the electrical network to utilize its regulation capability, while TES is introduced as an additional flexibility resource. The detailed cost models of combined heat and power (CHP) units and TES are presented to realize the objective of minimizing the overall operating cost. The performance of TES in improving wind power utilization is firstly validated by using an electrical boiler (EB) as a benchmark and further analyzed under different scenarios considering the growths of wind power capacity, electrical load, and heat load. Analysis of the Effects of the Location of Passive Control Devices on the Platform of a Floating Wind Turbine
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: floating wind turbines, hybrid power systems, structural control, TMD (tuned mass damper), vibration, wind power
Floating offshore wind turbines (FOWT) are subjected to strong loads, mainly due to wind and waves. These disturbances cause undesirable vibrations that affect the structure of these devices, increasing the fatigue and reducing its energy efficiency. Among others, a possible way to enhance the performance of these wind energy devices installed in deep waters is to combine them with other marine energy systems, which may, in addition, improve its stability. The purpose of this work is to analyze the effects that installing some devices on the platform of a barge-type wind turbine have on the vibrations of the structure. To do so, two passive control devices, TMD (Tuned Mass Damper), have been installed on the platform of the floating device, with different positions and orientations. TMDs are usually installed in the nacelle or in the tower, which imposes space, weight, and size hard constraints. Thermo-Economic Analysis on Integrated CO2, Organic Rankine Cycles, and NaClO Plant Using Liquefied Natural Gas
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
The thermal energy conversion of natural gas (NG) using appropriate configuration cycles represents one of the best nonrenewable energy resources because of its high heating value and low environmental effects. The natural gas can be converted to liquefied natural gas (LNG), via the liquefaction process, which is used as a heat source and sink in various multigeneration cycles. In this paper, a new configuration cycle is proposed using LNG as a heat source and heat sink. This new proposed cycle includes the CO2 cycle, the organic Rankine cycle (ORC), a heater, a cooler, an NaClO plant, and reverse osmosis. This cycle generates electrical power, heating and cooling energy, potable water (PW), hydrogen, and salt all at the same time. For this purpose, one computer program is provided in an engineering equation solver for energy, exergy, and thermo-economic analyses. Comparative Study on Chemical Kinetics Mechanisms for Methane-Based Fuel Mixtures under Engine-Relevant Conditions
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: engine-relevant condition, ignition delay time, laminar flame speed, mechanisms, Natural Gas
The use of natural gas in pure or in a blended form with hydrogen and syngas in spark ignition (SI) engines has received much attention in recent years. They have higher diffusion coefficient and laminar flame speed, a small quenching distance and wider flammability limit which compensate the demerits of the lean-burn natural gas combustion. Therefore, a careful examination of the chemical kinetics of combustion of gaseous fuel blends is of great importance. In this paper, performance of the various chemical kinetics mechanisms is compared against experimental data, accumulated for methane-based fuel blends under engine-relevant conditions to find the most appropriate mechanism in engine simulations. Pure methane, methane/syngas, and methane/propane blends are mainly studied at various temperatures, pressures, and equivalence ratios. The ignition delay time and laminar flame speed are used as quantitative metrics to compare the simulation results with the data from experiments. The mec... [more]

Influence of Clearance Flow on Dynamic Hydraulic Forces of Pump-Turbine during Runaway Transient Process
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: clearance flow patterns, clearance leakage, pump-turbine, runaway transient process, runner forces
The clearance flow around the pump-turbine runner has significant influences on unit vibrations, which may cause accidents in transient processes. The dynamic hydraulic forces and flow patterns in the clearance flow channel (CFC) of a low specific-speed pump-turbine were analyzed based on 3D CFD simulations during the runaway oscillating process. It is shown that the axial force of the runner periodically fluctuates with large amplitudes, and its components in CFC and the main flow channel (MFC) demonstrate a similar significance level. The CFC component was formulated as a function of the clearance inlet pressure and rotational speed, while the MFC component as a function of the momentum changing rate and the runner outlet pressure force. The fluctuation of runner radial force is mainly caused by the flow evolution in MFC, however, the flow in CFC aggravates it. The pressure in CFC shows a few pulsating signals from MFC, and the radial pressure drop in CFC is proportional to the squar... [more]

Short Term Prediction of PV Power Output Generation Using Hierarchical Probabilistic Model
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: correlation analysis, expectation and maximization (EM) algorithm, photovoltaic power output prediction, probabilistic method
Photovoltaics are methods used to generate electricity by using solar cells, which convert natural energy from the sun. This generation makes use of unlimited natural energy. However, this generation is irregular because they depend on weather occurrences. For this reason, there is a need to improve their economic efficiency through accurate predictions and reducing their uncertainty. Most researches were conducted to predict photovoltaic generation with various machine learning and deep learning methods that have complicated structures and over-fitted performances. As improving the performance, this paper explores the probabilistic approach to improve the prediction of the photovoltaic rate of power output per hour. This research conducted a variable correlation analysis with output values and a specific EM algorithm (expectation and maximization) made from 6054 observations. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: data center, energy consumption, energy savings
Simulation and experimental studies were conducted to investigate energy consumption, develop ECMs (Energy Conservation Measures), and analyze temperature increase under a power failure scenario for a research data center at Youngstown State University. Two ECMs were developed to improve energy consumption by analyzing the thermal performance of the data center: (1) increase the return temperature in air conditioning vents; (2) provide cold aisle containment with the set point temperature increase. A transient analysis was conducted under a cooling system failure scenario to predict the temperature variation over time. The results suggest that it takes 600 s to increase the server inlet temperature by 16.1 °C for the baseline model. In addition, in the ECM #2, the maximum temperature at the server inlet did not reach 40 °C under the air conditioning system failure scenario, which is the maximum operating temperature of the ASHRAE A3 envelop.

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: co-combustion, combustion duration, Diesel, emission, ignition delay, n-butanol
The development of compression ignition engines depends mainly on using alternative fuels, such as alcohols. The paper presents the results of tests of a stationary compression ignition engine fueled with mixtures of diesel oil and n-butanol with an energy share from 0 to 60%. The combustion and emission results of a dual-fuel engine were compared to a conventional diesel-only engine. As part of the work, the combustion process, including changes in pressure and heat release rate, as well as exhaust emissions from the test engine, were investigated. The main operational parameters of the engine were determined, including mean indicated pressure, thermal efficiency and specific energy consumption. Moreover, the stability of the engine operation was analyzed. The research shows that the 60% addition of n-butanol to diesel fuel increases the ignition delay (by 39%) and shortens the combustion duration (by 57%). In addition, up to 40%, it results in increased pmax, HRRmax and PPRmax. The e... [more]

Impact of Renewable Energy Sources on Power System Flexibility Requirements
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: demand-side parameters, hourly and daily time scales, net and residual load, power system flexibility, variable and intermittent RES
A power system can be defined as flexible if it can within economic and technological boundaries respond quickly and adequately to variations in supply and demand. The ongoing penetration of variable and intermittent renewable energy sources (RES) like wind and solar imposes additional and more critical requirement on power system flexibility. In this paper we propose a method to quantify these requirements based on the comparison of seven demand side parameters describing the statistical properties of the net load and the residual load of the referred power system. Each one of these parameters reflects a separate requirement on the available conventional generation in hourly and daily time scales—ramp up and ramp-down capabilities, technological minimum of generation, daily variation of generation. The proposed approach can be used to predict the requirements for generation flexibility according to the expected scenario of RES penetration in the future development of energy power syst... [more]

Online Short-Term Remaining Useful Life Prediction of Fuel Cell Vehicles Based on Cloud System
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cloud system, proton exchange membrane fuel cell, short-term RUL prediction
The durability of automotive fuel cells is one of the main factors restricting their commercial application. Therefore, establishing a remaining useful life (RUL) prediction model and developing an online operational method to apply it to the RUL optimization of fuel cell vehicles is an urgent academic problem. In this work, a short-term RUL prediction model and an online operation scheme for fuel cell vehicles are proposed. Firstly, based on historical data of a fuel cell bus under multiple conditions, the daily mode of stack voltage under a 75 A operation condition was selected as a health indicator that could better reflect the health status of a fuel cell stack. Then, an adaptive locally weighted scatterplot smoothing (LOWESS) algorithm was developed to adjust the most appropriate step size to smooth the original data automatically. Furthermore, for better prediction accuracy and stronger adaptability, a short-term RUL prediction model consisting of the adaptive LOWESS and bi-direc... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biofuel, EROI, Indonesia, Indonesian B30 program, palm oil, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
In early 2020, Indonesia implemented the biodiesel 30 (B30) program as an initiative to reduce Indonesia’s dependency on fossil fuels and to protect Indonesia’s palm oil market. However, palm oil has received international criticism due to its association with harmful environmental externalities. This paper analysed whether an investment in palm oil-based biofuel (POBB) provides Indonesia with the ability to achieve its environmental and financial goals. In this research, we performed a meta-analysis on biofuel energy return on investment (EROI) by examining 44 biofuel projects using ten types of biofuel feedstocks from 13 countries between 1995 and 2016. Results showed an average EROI of 3.92 and 3.22 for POBB and other biomass-based biofuels (OBBB), respectively. This shows that if only energy inputs and outputs are considered, biofuels provide a positive energy return. However, biofuels, including those from palm oil, produce externalities especially during land preparation and land... [more]

Keywords: Central Asia, energy resources, energy services, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, rural energy supply
The northern part of the globe is dominated by industrialisation and is well-developed. For many years, the southern part of the world (South Asia, Africa etc.) has been a target of research concentrating on access to energy (mainly electricity) in rural regions. However, the Central Asian region has not been a focus of energy research compared to South East Asia and Africa. Despite plentiful domestically available energy resources, the energy supply in Central Asia is very unevenly distributed between urban and rural areas. Almost half of the total population of Central Asia lives in rural areas and there is a lack of access to modern energy services to meet primary needs. To analyse the energy situation (i.e., electricity, heating, hot water consumption, cooking, etc.) in rural Central Asia, this paper reviews residential energy consumption trends in rural Central Asian regions as compared to urban areas. Solar irradiation data collected at the latitude of Milan city, near the 45th parallel North, and original activity data of some high-performing photocatalysts (i.e., commercial TiO2 P25, TiO2 prepared by flame spray pyrolysis, 0.2% wt/wt Au/P25) have been used to evaluate the feasibility and the efficiency of an ideal solar photoreactor for the CO2 photoreduction in liquid phase. The best theoretical performance was achieved with commercial bare P25 titania, despite the fact that it was the material with the widest band gap (3.41 eV vs. 3.31 for FSP and 3.12 for Au/P25). In that case the efficiency of energy storage was calculated as about 2% (considering the total irradiated solar energy) and ca 18% (considering only the UV fraction of solar irradiance). Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Boudouard gasification, current density, fluidized beds, solid oxide fuel cell, two-fluid model
A model of a fluidized bed coupled with direct carbon solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) is developed to explore the effect of coupling between fluidized bed and solid oxide fuel cell. Three gas−solid flow regimes are involved including fixed bed, delayed bubbling bed and bubbling bed. The anode reaction of SOFC is treated as the coupling processes of Boudouard gasification of carbon and electrochemical oxidation of CO. The effects of inlet velocity of the fluidizing agent CO2, carbon activity, channel width and coupling extent on the system performance are investigated. The results show that the inlet velocity of CO2 can promote the gasification rate in the anode, but too high velocities may lower CO molar fraction. The gasification rate generally increases with the increase of the channel width and carbon activity. Evaluating the Influence of Cetane Improver Additives on the Outcomes of a Diesel Engine Characteristics Fueled with Peppermint Oil Diesel Blend
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biofuel, combustion, DEE, DTBP, emission, peppermint
This paper aims to evaluate the impact of cetane improvers on the combustion, performance and emission characteristics of a compression ignition engine fueled with a 20% peppermint bio-oil/diesel blend (P20). It is hypothesized that the low viscosity and boiling point of peppermint oil could improve the atomization characteristics of the fuel. However, the usage of peppermint oil is restricted due to its low cetane index. To improve this, Diethyl Ether (DEE) and Di- tertiary Butyl Peroxide (DTBP) are added to the P20 blend. The tests are performed in a single-cylinder naturally aspirated water-cooled diesel engine and results indicate that NOx emission for P20 + DEE and P20 + DTBP is decreased by 10.4% and 9.8%, respectively, when compared to P20 at full load condition. Among these two cetane improvers, DTBP is more effective in reducing the CO, HC and smoke emission and the performance of the engine was reported to be higher for P20 + DTBP blends.
