February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dual carbon target, electric vehicle, integrated energy system, intelligent control
As China proposes to achieve carbon peak by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060, as well as the huge pressure on the power grid caused by the load demand of the energy supply stations of electric vehicles (EVs), there is an urgent need to carry out comprehensive energy management and coordinated control for EVs’ energy supply stations. Therefore, this paper proposed a two-step intelligent control method known as ISOM-SAIA to solve the problem of the 24 h control and regulation of green/flexible EV energy supply stations, including four subsystems such as a photovoltaic subsystem, an energy storage subsystem, an EV charging subsystem and an EV battery changing subsystem. The proposed control method has two main innovations and contributions. One is that it reduces the computational burden by dividing the multi-dimensional mixed-integer programming problem of simultaneously optimizing the 24 h operation modes and outputs of four subsystems into two sequential tasks: the classification of... Yu-Lin Lee, Kun-Feng Chen, Kai-Jun Pai, Chang-Hua Lin, Yuan-Hong Cheng
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: boost inverter, differential inverter, modified SPWM
This study aims to implement a single-stage differential boost inverter (SSDBI) applied in a single-stage battery energy storage system (BESS) topology that can supply power from a lower-voltage battery module to an alternating current (AC) load. Compared with the common two-stage topology, which has a two-stage converter and higher-voltage battery module array, the single-stage topology can reduce the number of cells and components and improve the power density. In addition, a modified sinusoidal pulse-width modulation (SPWM) control was proposed to reduce the control complexity of the SSDBI while improving the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the inverter. The modified SPWM control can reduce the duty ratio of the SSDBI and the stress on the components in order to improve the AC voltage output waveform and reduce the THD.

February 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: alkalization, non-linear control, Optimization
In this paper, an approach for the tuning of a model-based non-linear predictive control (NMPC) is presented. The proposed control uses the pattern search optimization algorithm (PSM), which is applied to the pH non-linear control in the alkalinization process of sugar juice. First, the model identification is made using the Takagi Sugeno T-S fuzzy inference systems with multidimensional fuzzy sets; the next step is the controller parameters tuning. The PSM algorithm is used in both cases. The proposed approach allows the minimization of model uncertainty and decreases, in the response, the error in a steady state when compared with other authors who perform the same procedure but apply other optimization algorithms. The results show an improvement in the steady-state error in the plant response.

Keywords: continuous crystallization, cubic cooling profile, fouling, oscillatory baffleless coil reactors, oscillatory flow, pulsation, tubular crystallizer, ultrasound assisted nucleation
Continuous tubular crystallizers have the potential to reduce manufacturing costs and increase product quality. However, designing tubular crystallizers is a complex and challenging task as crystallization is a complex, multiphase process with a propensity for fouling and clogging. While several designs have been proposed to overcome these issues, these designs are either unproven or poorly scalable and complex. In this work a continuous crystallizer is designed and evaluated to mitigate these issues. The tubular crystallizer combines a novel method to obtain a cubic cooling profile to control the supersaturation, ultrasound to induce nucleation and oscillatory flow to improve mixing and minimize fouling and sedimentation. The results show that the crystallizer was able to operate for more than 4 h without clogging, with high yields and a narrow particle size distribution. The design proposed here is therefore considered a viable approach for continuous crystallizers.

February 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: field programmable gate array (FPGA), hardware-in-the-loop simulation (HILS), rotor position estimation, sensorless control, square waveform voltage injection
In this paper, the rotor position estimation performance of the sensorless scheme for permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) implemented through the injection of high-frequency square-wave voltage according to the frequency of the square-wave voltage is presented through HILS (Hardware In the Loop Simulation) experiments. An inverter using an IGBT device usually has a switching frequency of around 15 kHz. On the other hand, GaN devices that can be switched on and off at frequencies higher than 100 kHz have been recently developed, and research is being actively conducted to apply GaNs to a variable speed system. The purpose of this study is to conduct HILS experiments to analysis the rotor position estimation ability of the sensorless technique in cases where a high switching frequency was applied, such as GaN devices, with that of a system having a usual switching frequency, such as IGBT. In the HILS system used in this study, an inverter and motor model implemented with Simulink... [more]

Keywords: AOD slag, Carbon Dioxide, carbonation, kinetics, mineral phase
Argon oxygen decarburization stainless steel slag (AOD slag) has high mineral carbonation activity. AOD slag carbonation has both the resource utilization of metallurgical waste slag and the carbon reduction effect of CO2 storage. This paper aimed to study carbonation reaction characteristics of AOD slag. Under the slurry-phase accelerated carbonation route, the effect of stirring speed (r) and reaction temperature (T) on AOD slag’s carbonation was studied by controlling the reaction conditions. Mineral composition analysis and microscopic morphology analysis were used to explore the mineral phase evolution of AOD slag during the carbonation process. Based on the unreacted core model, the kinetic model of the carbonation reaction of AOD slag was analyzed. The results showed that the carbonation ratio of AOD slag reached its maximum value of 66.7% under the reaction conditions of a liquid to solid ratio (L/S) of 8:1, a CO2 partial pressure of 0.2 MPa, a stirring speed of 450 r·min−1, an... Keywords: agro-industrial wastes, biological control, Botrytis cinerea, disease severity and incidence, disease suppressive soils, lignocellulosic composts, macrodilution assay, soilborne pathogens
Composts are widely used in horticulture as organic amendments to improve the properties of soils. Composts have also been reported to enhance the disease suppressive potential of soils and, therefore, could be used as a strategy for managing plant diseases. The aim of this study was to test the ability of soils amended with four different agro-industrial waste-based composts (chestnut peels and shells, spent coffee grounds, grape marc, and olive leaves) to inhibit the growth and activity of Botrytis cinerea and several soilborne pathogens. First, the capacity of aqueous compost extracts to inhibit the growth of Botrytis cinerea and five soilborne fungi was evaluated in vitro using a broth macrodilution method. Second, lettuce plants were grown on soils amended with composts and inoculated either with B. cinerea or the soilborne fungus Fusarium oxysporum Schlechtendahl isolated from lamb’s lettuce. The determination of minimal inhibitory concentrations indicated that none of the compos... [more]

Keywords: chronic partial bladder outlet obstruction, fibrosis, microarray, Tgfb, Thbs1
Chronic partial bladder outlet obstruction (PBOO) is a prevalent clinical problem that may result from multiple etiologies. PBOO may be a secondary condition to various anatomical and functional abnormalities. Bladder fibrosis is the worst outcome of PBOO. However, gene alterations and the mechanism of fibrosis development after PBOO onset are not clear. Therefore, we aimed to investigate gene expression alterations during chronic PBOO. A rat model of PBOO was established and validated by a significant increase in rat bladder weight. The bladder samples were further analyzed by microarray, and differentially expressed genes (DEGs) that are more related to PBOO compared with the control genes were selected. The data showed that 16 significantly upregulated mRNAs and 3 significantly downregulated mRNAs are involved in fibrosis. Moreover, 13 significantly upregulated mRNAs and 12 significantly downregulated mRNAs are related to TGFB signaling. Twenty-two significantly upregulated mRNAs an... [more]

February 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: adaptive fuzzy, composite algorithm, omnidirectional mobile robot, sliding-mode, smooth switching
Adaptive fuzzy sliding-mode control design for omnidirectional mobile robots with prescribed performance is presented in this work. First, an error transformation which transforms the constrained variable into an unconstrained one is carried out. Next, a fuzzy logic system (FLS) for approximating the unknown dynamics is constructed. Based on such a model, a nominal adaptive linearizing controller incorporating a serial-parallel model (SPM)-based composite algorithm, which improves the tracking performance of the overall closed-loop system, is synthesized. To solve the so-called “loss of controllability” problem, a smooth-switching algorithm is embedded which hands over the control authority to an auxiliary sliding-mode controller until the danger is safely bypassed. The proposed design ensures the semi-globally uniformly ultimately bounded stability of the closed-loop signals. Simulation works demonstrating the validity of the proposed design are presented in the final.

Keywords: adaptive backstepping control, backstepping, position control, pump-control system
A nonlinear adaptive backstepping control method was proposed to address the system parameter uncertainty problem in the position control process of an electro-hydraulic servo closed-pump control system. This control strategy fully considers the parameter uncertainty of the nonlinear system and establishes the adaptive rate of the uncertain parameter to adjust the parameter disturbance online in real time, thereby improving the accuracy and robustness of the control system. A pump control system experiment platform was used to verify the feasibility of the controller. The experimental results showed that the proposed control strategy provided a good control effect. The pump control system can be controlled with high precision, with a steady-state control accuracy of ±0.02 mm, which serves as a good foundation for the engineering application and promotion of the pump control system.

Keywords: fuzzy intelligent control, Lyapunov stability, traffic light, urban traffic
Due to the increasing use of private cars for urbanization and urban transport, the travel time of urban transportation is increasing. People spend a lot of time in the streets, and the queue length of waiting increases accordingly; this has direct effects on fuel consumption too. Traffic flow forecasts and traffic light schedules were studied separately in the urban traffic system. This paper presents a new stable TS (Takagi−Sugeno) fuzzy controller for urban traffic. The state-space dynamics are utilized to formulate both the vehicle’s average waiting time at an isolated intersection and the length of queues. A fuzzy intelligent controller is designed for light control based upon the length of the queue, and eventually, the system’s stability is proved using the Lyapunov theorem. Moreover, the input variables are the length of queue and number of input or output vehicles from each lane. The simulation results describe the appearance of the proposed controller. An illustrative example... [more]

Keywords: fuzzy PID, multiple control, road recognition, semi-active suspension, variable universe
By analyzing the shortcomings of the traditional fuzzy PID(Abbreviation for Proportional, Integral and Differential) control system (FPID), a multiple fuzzy PID suspension control system based on road recognition (MFRR) is proposed. Compared with the traditional fuzzy PID control system, the multiple fuzzy control system can identify the road grade and take changes in road conditions into account. Based on changes in road conditions and the variable universe and secondary adjustment of the control parameters of the PID controller were carried out, which makes up for the disadvantage of having too many single input parameters in the traditional fuzzy PID control system. A two degree of freedom 1/4 vehicle model was established. Based on the suspension dynamic parameters, a road elevation algorithm was designed. Road grade recognition was carried out based on a BP neural network algorithm. The experimental results showed that the sprung mass acceleration (SMA) of the MFRR was much smalle... [more]

Keywords: human factors, overhead handling crane operation, teleoperation
This study aimed to identify the effects of different approaches to a motion control interface (MCI) in tele-operated crane handling tasks. In this study, due to the difficulty of applying the actual equipment to the experiment, we presented a prototype system of a tele-operated overhead handling (TOH) crane. Specifically, we investigated participants’ task performance including the accuracy of task completion during unloading, heart rate variation, workload, and the relationships between these factors when four motion control approaches were used: pointing (P), keyboard (K), orientation (O), hand-free gesture (HG). Experiments were conducted with two groups of participants: 21 university students and 11 crane operators used each of the four control methods. A task condition for handling iron blocks was tested. The efficacy of each motion control approach for task performance was evaluated by a within-subject experiment with a novice group. The expert group was used for comparing the t... [more]

February 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: experiment, gear transmission system, nonlinear dynamics, tooth breakage
This paper studies the dynamics of a two-stage gear transmission system in both the normal state and the fault state with tooth breakage. The torsional vibration model of the two-stage parallel shaft gear was developed by using the lumped parameter method. The time-varying meshing stiffness of the gear transmission system is described by Fourier series which is determined by the periodical meshing characteristics of the gears with both the single-tooth and the double-tooth contacts. By introducing the pulse into the regular time-varying meshing stiffness, the tooth breakage existing in the gear transmission system is mimicked. Based on the numerical simulation of the developed dynamic model, both the time domain analysis and the frequency domain analysis of the gear transmission system under both the normal condition and the tooth breakage are compared accordingly. The influence of the tooth breakage on the dynamic characteristics of the gear transmission system is analyzed comprehensi... [more]

Keywords: brain storm optimization (BSO) algorithm, chattering, quick-response variable structure control (QRVSC), single-phase sine-wave inverter, total harmonic distortion (THD)
This paper puts forward an optimal quick-response variable structure control with a single-phase sine-wave inverter application, which keeps harmonic distortion as low as possible under various conditions of loading. Our proposed solution gives an improvement in architecture in which a quick-response variable structure control (QRVSC) is combined with a brain storm optimization (BSO) algorithm. Notwithstanding the intrinsic resilience of a typical VSC with respect to changes in plant parameters and loading disruptions, the system state convergence towards zero normally proceeds at an infinitely long-time asymptotically, and chattering behavior frequently takes place. The QRVSC for ensuring speedy limited-time convergence with the system state to the balancing point is devised, whilst the BSO will be employed to appropriately regulate the parametric gains in the QRVSC for the elimination of chattering phenomena. From the mix of both a QRVSC together with a BSO, a low total harmonic dist... [more]

February 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: channel fading, continuous stirring reactors, Fault Detection, T-S fuzzy model
Continuous stirring tank reactors are widely used in the chemical production process, which is always accompanied by nonlinearity, time delay, and uncertainty. Considering the characteristic of the actual reaction of the continuous stirring tank reactors, the fault detection problem is studied in terms of the T-S fuzzy model. Through a fault detection filter performance analysis, the sufficient condition for the filtering error dynamics is obtained, which meets the exponential stability in the mean square sense and the given performance requirements. The design of the fault detection filter is transformed into one that settles the convex optimization issue of linear matrix inequality. Numerical analysis shows the effectiveness of this scheme.

Keywords: carry-over effect, contaminated spices, control and preventative measures, meat products, mycotoxins, surface moulds
Documented cases of mycotoxin occurrence in meat products call for further research into potential contamination sources, especially given an ever more increasing consumption of these nutritionally rich products. These foodstuffs can be contaminated with mycotoxins through three pathways: contaminated spices and other raw materials, mycotoxin-producing moulds present on the surface of dry-cured meat products, and carry-over effect from farm animals exposed to contaminated feed. In order to establish meat products’ mycotoxin contamination more precisely, the concentrations of all mycotoxins of relevance for these products should be determined. This manuscript reviews data on major mycotoxins present in different types of meat products, and discusses the contamination pathways, contamination levels and control & preventative measures.

Keywords: biotechnology, metabolic flux analysis, metabolic network, VERO cells
Although the culture of VERO cells in bioreactors is an important industrial bioprocess for the production of viruses and vaccines, surprisingly few reports on the analysis of the flux distribution in the cell metabolism have been published. In this study, an attempt is made to fill this gap by providing an analysis of relatively simple metabolic networks, which are constructed to describe the cell behavior in different culture conditions, e.g., the exponential growth phase (availability of glucose and glutamine), cell growth without glutamine, and cell growth without glucose and glutamine. The metabolic networks are kept as simple as possible in order to avoid underdeterminacy linked to the lack of extracellular measurements, and a unique flux distribution is computed in each case based on a mild assumption that the macromolecular composition of the cell is known. The result of this computation provides some insight into the metabolic changes triggered by the culture conditions, which... [more]

Keywords: communication system delay, frequency stability, load frequency control, virtual inertia
Frequency stability is an important issue for the operation of islanded microgrids. Since the upstream grid does not support the islanded microgrids, the power control and frequency regulation encounter serious problems. By increasing the penetration of the renewable energy sources in microgrids, optimizing the parameters of the load frequency controller plays a great role in frequency stability, which is currently being investigated by researchers. The status of loads and generation sources are received by the control center of a microgrid via a communication system and the control center can regulate the output power of renewable energy sources and/or power storage devices. An inherent delay in the communication system or other parts like sensors sampling rates may lead microgrids to have unstable operation states. Reducing the delay in the communication system, as one of the main delay origins, can play an important role in improving fluctuation mitigation, which on the other hand i... [more]

Keywords: closed-loop wind farm control, wake, wind farm controller, wind farm simulation
This study was conducted to analyze the impact of surrounding environmental changes on the feedback gain and performance of a closed-loop wind farm controller that reduces the error between total power output of wind farm and power command of transmission system operator. To analyze the impact of environment changes on wind farm controller feedback gain, the feedback gain was manually changed from 0 to 0.9 with a 0.1 interval. In this study, wind speed and wind direction changes were considered as environment changes; it was found by simulation code that the wind farm controller gain is in inverse proportion to wake recovery rate. In other words, the feedback gain should be higher if the distance between upstream and downstream wind turbine is not sufficient to wake recovery. Furthermore, the feedback gain should be lower when the upstream wind turbine generates a relatively weak wake by operating above the rated wind speed. The wind farm simulation was performed using reference 5 MW w... [more]

Keywords: crowbar, DFIG, low voltage ride-through, rotor braking circuit, self-adaptive control
This paper introduces an improved rotor braking protection circuit configuration and the corresponding self-adaptive control strategy to enhance the low voltage ride-through (LVRT) capability of the doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG). The proposed protection circuit consists of a crowbar circuit and a series rotor braking resistor array, which guarantees the safe operation of wind generators under the LVRT. Moreover, to adapt the proposed protection and further enhance the performance of the improved configuration, a corresponding self-adaptive control strategy is presented, which regulates the rotor braking resistor and protection exiting time automatically through calculating the rotor current in the fault period. The LVRT capability and transient performance of the DFIG by using the proposed method is tested with simulation. Compared with the conventional crowbar protection or the fixed rotor braking protection, the proposed protection and the control strategy present several adv... [more]

Keywords: DC voltage control timescale, deloading maximum power point tracking, electrical torque analysis method, grid-tied photovoltaic generation system, inertia and damping characteristics
Inertia effect and damping capacity, which are the basic characteristics of traditional power systems, are critical to grid frequency stability. However, the inertia and damping characteristics of grid-tied photovoltaic generation systems (GPVGS), which may affect the frequency stability of the grid with high proportional GPVGS, are not yet clear. Therefore, this paper takes the GPVGS based on droop control as the research object. Focusing on the DC voltage control (DVC) timescale dynamics, the mathematical model of the GPVGS is firstly established. Secondly, the electrical torque analysis method is used to analyze the influence law of inertia, damping and synchronization characteristics from the physical mechanism perspective. The research finds that the equivalent inertia, damping and synchronization coefficient of the system are determined by the control parameters, structural parameters and steady-state operating point parameters. Changing the control parameters is the simplest and... [more]
