February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: depositional model, Neogene, paleoclimate, paleogeomorphic, sedimentary characteristics, sequence
The sedimentary characteristics of the Neogene in the eastern Liaodong area are poorly studied, which restricts the oil and gas exploration in this area. Based on the current seismic, logging, drilling, and core data, we have studied the sequence stratigraphy and sedimentary characteristics of the Neogene in the eastern Liaodong area. Ultimately, we identified the controlling factors of sedimentation and established the depositional model. In this study, six sequence boundaries of the Neogene were identified and can be divided into five third-order sequences. The sedimentary evolution can be divided into four stages: braided river delta, meandering river delta with a low sand-stratum ratio, meandering river delta with a high sand-stratum ratio, and meandering river delta. Both the palaeotectonic movements and paleoclimate changes of the Neogene influence the periodical fluctuation of the lake level and then control the vertical evolution of the sedimentary types. The paleogeomorphology... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: active control, flow ripple, positive displacement pump, pressure ripple
Positive displacement machines present a well-known major drawback that is the oscillation in delivered flow rate. This paper presents two active solutions for reducing the flow ripple generated by a pump with an external device actuated by means of a piezo-stack actuator. The work is focused on a theoretical analysis, with the aim of collecting information about the performance of the solutions proposed and their main advantages and drawbacks. The active methods proposed involve a cylindrical actuator connected to the delivery line of the pump. The piston could be actuated directly by a piezo-stack actuator or by a differential pressure modulated by a proportional piezo actuated valve. The actuators were modelled and a control algorithm based on Least Mean Square algorithm was used to achieve the adaptability for both systems at different operating conditions. The developed mathematical model permits to define the great potential of these solutions that can drastically reduce the flow... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dynamic switching, impulsive load, power quality, Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS), virtual synchronous generator (VSG) control
This paper proposes a novel control strategy to alleviate the impulsive current for Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS), which is designed based on the theory of virtual synchronous generator (VSG) and dynamic switching method. The power quality of UPS will become distortion when the instantaneous impulsive load is imposed on UPS. Especially, the output current of UPS will increase quickly in short time. In order to maintain the uninterrupted output voltage and reduce the distortion of output voltage of UPS under the action of instantaneous impulse load, Dynamic switching method is proposed to resist impulse load with large scale impulse current, Meanwhile, the VSG control strategy is adopted to deal with the slow power switching and provide virtual inertia for the system, so that the output voltage of UPS can remain uninterrupted and stable. Finally, simulation and experimental results show that this method can effectively suppress the impulse current, reduce the output voltage distort... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dual frequency vector modulation, dual−serial motors, five−phase permanent magnet synchronous motor, harmonic torque suppression
A novel cross−series connection of two five−phase permanent magnet synchronous motors (FPMSM) supplied by single inverter can halve the number of required power units and current sensors. This, along with a decoupling control strategy for FPMSMs in series based on an improved dual−frequency vector modulation (DFV−SVPWM) and a flux−linkage torque ripple suppression method with current compensation are proposed in this paper, each of which have great significance for multi−unit industrial equipment. The third harmonic flux−linkage will produce torque ripple in the FPMSM in series, which has an adverse effect on accuracy. In this paper, a synchronous decoupling mathematical model of dual−series FPMSM with harmonic flux−linkage is established to analyze the decoupling relationship between torque and current. In addition, an enhanced DFV−SVPWM with higher modulation ratio is proposed for the decoupling control of double motors in series. Furthermore, based on the torque influence of two ser... [more]
Large-Power Transformers: Time Now for Addressing Their Monitoring and Failure Investigation Techniques

Keywords: condition monitoring, diagnostic techniques, large power transformer, mechanical or electrical integrity of the core and windings, transformer fault diagnosis
Several review studies exist in the literature about monitoring, fault detection, and diagnosis of power transformers. However, they are general approaches in terms of power transformers. Some only focus on applying a specific class of techniques, but again, for general power transformers. Other reviews focus on applying different technologies such as fiber optics, thermal cameras, and vibration sensors, but all within the perspective of general power transformers. A significant question remains: among all types of power transformers, which specific techniques should be used, and why are they more adequate? What are the uncertainties that can decrease their precision? What about the balance, in terms of costs, associated with applying a certain technique and the return needed for a particular type of transformer? In this context, this paper is not only a literature review of well-known problems related to power transformers. Here, we do not just center on large power transformers (100... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: concentrating parabolic collector, distilling ethanol, Energy, fuel, semi-automatic solar collector, thermal efficiency
Thailand is an agricultural country with several agro-industrial by-products that can be processed into fuels. Although producing ethanol from agro-industrial by-products is an interesting option, the process of distilling ethanol from fermented agricultural products requires a high temperature to increase the ethanol concentration from 10% to 95%. In this research, solar ethanol distillation equipment incorporating a solar parabolic collector with a vacuum heat absorber tube to increase efficiency by reducing heat loss was designed and developed. An electronic device was used to control the distillation process, maintain the required temperature, and make suitable adjustments to the solar radiation acceptance angles of the parabolic solar collector. Ethanol dilution at concentrations of 10%, 15%, and 20%, and Sato (Thai Rice Wine) were used as the reactant in the distillation process. The result of distilling ethanol distillation with a semi-automatic control using a vacuum-tube parab... [more]

Keywords: anti-interference, LADRC, LCL grid-connected inverter, split capacitor
A grid-connected inverter’s stability is easily influenced by the system’s internal and external characteristics, especially when the grid-connected inverter is connected to the grid by an LCL filter, which complicates the system design and operating conditions. To handle the problem of disturbance in the high-order grid-connected system of the inverter, a linear active disturbance rejection control (LADRC) strategy based on LCCL (which divides the capacitor of the LCL filter into two halves in a specified proportion) is proposed in this paper. First, the system is reduced from third order to first order by using the split capacitor control method, which solves the difficulties of complicated LCL grid-connected inverter controller design and easy resonance. Meanwhile, the internal and external disturbances of the inverter system are treated as generalized disturbances. Then, the LADRC control is used to adjust the closed-loop system’s parameters, which enhances the quality of the grid... [more]

Keywords: building façades, enthalpy recovery, mechanical ventilation, serial/industrialized renovation, speed-controlled supply air heat pump
To address the huge market of renovation of multi-apartment buildings, minimal-invasive decentral serial-renovation solutions are required. One major challenge in the design of decentral heat pumps is to find the optimal balance between, on one hand, compactness and pleasant design, and on the other hand, efficiency and minimal sound emissions. A comprehensive holistic design and optimization process for the development of decentral heat pumps, from the component level, to the system level, and up to the building level, is developed. A novel façade-integrated speed-controlled exhaust air to supply air heat pump combined with a mechanical ventilation system with heat recovery and recirculation air was developed and simulated in a reference flat. Compared to a traditional supply air heat pump without recirculation, it shows only slight performance improvement, but allows significantly better thermal comfort and control, independently from the hygienic air flow rate and from the heating a... Keywords: distributed generation sources, Model Predictive Control, power sharing, reliability
Different types of distributed generation (DG) units based on renewable and non-renewable energy sources can create a local energy system in microgrids. The widespread penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs) has affected many power system issues, such as the control and operation of these networks. For the optimal operation of microgrids, optimal energy planning and management in the new space governing the distribution system requires extensive research and analysis. Getting acquainted with the latest research about the evaluation of the problems and challenges in the design of control systems plays an important role in providing a guidance map for researchers to find the recent challenges and propose new solutions. This paper tried to list the challenges of distributed generation sources for MG applications, opportunities, and solutions. These challenges are reported in hierarchical control strategies and power-sharing categories. Therefore, Model Predictive Control (MPC)-... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: current sensor faults, fault tolerant control, faults degree estimation, improved axis rotation, multi-phase motor drives
Fault probability rises with an increase in the number of current sensors in multi-phase permanent synchronous motor (PMSM) drives. This paper proposes an improved axis rotation method for fault diagnosis and tolerant control to make the multi-phase PMSM drives against current sensor loss signal and gain faults. This method can effectively diagnose and distinguish faults without selecting a threshold value, and the degree of fault can be further estimated. The proposed method makes current sensor fault diagnosis and tolerant control become an integrated module. The validity and accuracy of the proposed method is verified by different fault diagnoses and tolerant control experiments of a 9 kw nine-phase PMSM drive.

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: FACTS, SSSC, transmissions lines
A novel modular Transformerless, Self-balanced, Static Synchronous Series Compensator (TSB-SSSC) capable of delivering ultra-high current, with the objective of dynamically balancing the impedance of the transmission power grid, is proposed. Balancing transmission lines is crucial in power optimization and delivery because it increases the power transfer capability without building new power lines. The transformerless SSSC needs to support and control the line current from a few hundred to several thousand amperes. This paper presents how the ultra-high current architecture of the TSB-SSSC is achieved by operating multiple converters with self-balancing capabilities in parallel. The mechanism of self-balancing is based on the intrinsic physics of the capacitor and is enabled by a passive network of capacitor equalizers that keep the capacitor voltage equal during switching disconnection. The second self-balancing system consists of an inductive component that balances possible differen... [more]

Keywords: drive solution, independently rotating wheels, low floor, tram
The urban transport system based on trams as the basic means of transport is one of the oldest systems of human transport in urban agglomerations. A tram is a more efficient, cheaper-to-operate, and greener means of transport compared to a bus. Striving to enable the use of this means of transport by elderly and disabled people, constructors and manufacturers of tram vehicles began to consider the requirements of the ordering parties—organizers of municipal public transport—in their solutions. The basic condition for disabled and elderly people to use tram transport is the possibility of safe and efficient entry and exit from the vehicle at tram stops. The fulfillment of this condition is possible only in the case of tram vehicles with a low 100% floor, and this, in turn, requires the replacement of trolleys with traditional wheelsets, that is, trolleys with independently rotating wheels, in the construction of the running gear. A wheelset with independently rotating wheels (IRW) does... [more]

Keywords: convolution neural network, fault diagnosis, multi-domain supervised learning, rolling bearing
The rolling bearing is a critical part of rotating machinery and its condition determines the performance of industrial equipment; it is necessary to detect rolling bearing faults as early as possible. The traditional methods of fault diagnosis are not efficient and are time-consuming. With the help of deep learning, the convolution neural network (CNN) plays a huge role in the data-driven methods of bearing fault diagnosis. However, the vibration signal is non-stationary, contains high noise, and is one-dimensional, which is difficult to analyze directly by the CNN model. Considering the multi-domain learning as an advantage of deep learning, this paper proposes a novel rolling bearing fault diagnosis approach using an improved one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) convolution neural network (CNN) of two-domain information learning. The constructed fault diagnosis model combining 1D and 2D CNN extracts the fault features from the two-domain information of bearing fault samples... [more]

Keywords: bipolar SM, DC fault blocking submodule (SM), fault ride-through (FRT), high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission, modular multilevel converter (MMC), static synchronous compensator (STATCOM)
In the event of a DC side fault in modular multilevel converters (MMCs), the fault current contributions are initially made by submodule (SM) capacitor discharge, which occurs before the fault is detected, followed by the AC side contribution to the DC side fault. While the AC side currents can be regulated using fault blocking SMs, the initial discharge of the SM capacitors results in high DC fault currents, which can take several milliseconds to be brought under control. This paper presents a method to actively control the rate of rise of the DC fault current by regulating the discharge of SM capacitors and accelerating the suppression of fault current oscillations during fault ride-through (FRT) in a full-bridge (FB)-MMC system. In the proposed method, the discharge direction of the FBSM capacitors is reversed following the detection of a DC side fault, which leads to a reversal in the fault current direction and a fast drop-off towards the zero-crossing. Immediately after the zero-... [more]

Keywords: counterbalance, energy balance, hydraulic systems, load-holding valve, mobile machinery, overcenter
It is very well known that the use of a load-holding valve (LHV) in a hydraulic system introduces additional energy consumption. This article presented a simplified graphical method for analyzing the power requirements of hydraulic systems equipped with load-holding valves for overrunning load control. The method helps to understand the performance of load-holding valves during actuator movement. In addition, it allows visualization of the influence on the overall system consumption of the main parameters (pilot ratio, set pressure) and others such as flow rate, back pressure, and load force. The method is attractive because, with only the pressures at the three ports and the valve relief function curve, it is sufficient to evaluate the energy consumption and to define the power ratio as an index indicating the percentage of energy that is to be used to open the LHV valve. The method was applied to real cases, in particular to two types of lifting mobile machines. It was validated foll... [more]

Keywords: driver unit, electrical control unit, electromagnetic harvester, Energy Storage, MR damper, vibration reduction system
The work deals with a newly developed prototype of an electrical control unit (ECU) for a magnetorheological (MR) damper powered by energy harvested from vibrations. The ECU, consisting of a rectifying bridge, a driver unit, a microcontroller, and an internal power supply system, is an advanced version of the specially designed processing system for energy harvested from vibrations and the use of this energy to control the MR damper. Unlike a typical MR damper control system in which electrical circuits are powered from an external energy source, the ECU is powered by a part of the energy extracted from a vibrating system using an electromagnetic harvester. However, the excess amount of energy recovered over that necessary to power the MR damper and electrical circuits can be collected in harvested energy storage. The study presents the design concept of the ECU, computer simulations of the in-built driver unit (DU), the method of connecting the ECU with the harvester, the MR damper an... [more]

Keywords: cost function, model predictive current control, single-phase shunt active power filter, THD
For a single-phase Shunt Active Power Filter (SAPF) with a two-step prediction, this research presents a modified current control based on a Model Predictive Current Control (MPCC) technique. An H-bridge inverter, a DC link capacitor, and a filter inductor comprise the single-phase SAPF topology. The SAPF reference current is computed using the DC-link capacitor voltage regulation-based PI control technique. The weighting factor-based model predictive current controller is used to track the current commands. The essential dynamic index for evaluating waveform quality is the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of a source current and switching frequency of power switches. The conventional methods the THD and switching frequency are not considered as an objective function, so that a weighting factor-based MPCC technique is used to obtain a good compromise between the THD of the source current and switching frequency of power switches. Through MATLAB simulation and experimentation with the Cy... [more]

Keywords: dielectrophoretic force, electrostatic force, manipulation, micro plastic, plastic sorting
Effective sorting and extraction of tiny plastic objects is becoming increasingly important for manufacturing high-quality recycled plastics. Herein, we designed a manipulation device for tiny objects that can drive multiple target objects individually. This type of device has a potential to sort tiny pieces of a wide variety of materials, not strongly depending on their physical properties, by combining different detection meanings. In this study, two types of devices were tested as the basic components of the proposed device. One of them had a single object-holding point and the other had two of them. These holding points consisted of strip-shaped electrodes facing each other. The high voltage applied to the facing electrodes created forces heading toward the object-holding points caused by the heterogeneity of the electric field in the devices. The forces created in these devices were determined from the motion analysis of a glass sphere, which is a model for target objects, and a n... [more]

Keywords: delta front facies, Jurassic, reservoir architecture, sequence stratigraphy, Zhetybay Oilfield
Three-dimensional (3D) seismic data and well log data were used to investigate the sandstone architecture of the Middle Jurassic deltaic reservoirs of the Zhetybay Oilfield, Mangeshrak Basin, Kazakhstan. The base-level cycles of different scales were identified and divided using well log and 3D seismic data. Five types of sedimentary boundaries were identified in the mouth bar sandstones. The boundaries divide single mouth bars. Vertically, the spatial distribution of sand bodies can be divided into superposed, spliced, and isolation modes. Laterally, contact modes can be divided into superposition, lateral, and isolation modes. We found that the base-level cycle controls the evolution of the delta front sand body architecture. In the early decline or late rise of the base-level cycle, the superimposed or spliced modes dominate the sand body. By contrast, the lateral or isolation modes dominate the sand body in the late decline or early rise of the base-level cycle. This paper proposes... [more]

Keywords: geothermal heat pump system (GHPS), ground heat exchanger (GHE), model predictive control (MPC)
This paper presents a mathematical model of heat transfer behavior between the liquid inside vertical underground geothermal pipes and the surrounding ground for heating (in the winter) and cooling (in the summer) modes in a ground heat exchanger (GHE) that can optimize its output temperature. The GHE’s output temperature reaches the appropriate value when the water velocity is lowered enough. Subsequently, the proposed model was applied to a case study of a 400-ton geothermal heat pump system (GHPS) at Oakland University, in both the heating and cooling modes, to assess its validity and improve the GHE’s performance. The model was implemented in MATLAB using an ordinary differential equation (ODE) solver. Four different water velocities were used to demonstrate the significant effect of velocity on the loop exit temperature. Model predictive control (MPC) was designed to optimize the GHE’s output temperature by controlling the water velocity, which could reduce the energy consumption... [more]

Keywords: DC-DC buck converter, digital control, nonlinear PID controller, robust exact filtering differentiator, saturated controller
This paper presents a discrete-time output feedback controller to regulate the output voltage of a DC-DC buck converter. The proposal’s main feature is the application of a discrete-time equivalent of the robust exact filtering differentiator. First, the document exposes a theoretical analysis of the closed-loop system, where it is considered the problem of implementing a real-time differentiator with a good relationship between exactness and noise filtration performance. Hence, secondly, the controller in a laboratory setup is presented. The first experimental results suggest that the proposed controller exhibits good robustness against noise and maintains the asymptotic accuracy, even with saturated control inputs, as in the case of the DC-DC buck converter. Consequently, aiming to verify the features of the proposed method, the controller is validated through multiple experiments, showing satisfactory voltage tracking accuracy, good suppression of instantaneous load and supply volta... Keywords: bidirectional, DHC-LT resonant DC-DC converter, FHA, phase-shift control
This paper presents a novel 400 V−50 V bidirectional DHC-LT resonant DC-DC converter. By adding a resonant capacitor and an auxiliary transformer based on LLC, zero-voltage switching (ZVS) and zero-current switching (ZCS) are achieved, while the output voltage gain range is broadened in two directions. Operation principles and robustness are discussed with equations. Then, the error factor of fundamental harmonic analysis (FHA) in resonant converters is analyzed. Considering the phase difference between the output voltage and resonant tank current, an improved method is proposed to describe the behavior of the DHC-LT converter more precisely. A comparison is conducted to prove the effectiveness of the proposed FHA. Furthermore, in order to reduce the output voltage and provide a ripple-free charging current, a fixed-frequency phase-shift strategy is introduced in the DHC-LT converter. ZVS can be realized through the reasonable design of dead time and phase-shift angle. Finally, a 2.5 k... [more]

Keywords: connection power, design outdoor temperature, district heating, dynamic heating curve, extreme weather file, flow limiter, heating sizing, internal heat gain, water flow rate
Space Heating (SH) substations in District Heating-based (DH) systems are typically dimensioned at the design outdoor temperature without accounting for internal and solar heat gains. In residential buildings, the total required DH power typically also includes the need for Domestic Hot Water (DHW). This practice results in oversized substations and high DH design flow rates, which, due to heat gains and building thermal mass utilization in building operation, rarely, if ever, occur. Modern buildings maintain the desired indoor temperature with lower heating power by controlling the SH supply temperature with an outdoor-air-dependent heating curve and heating water flow with room unit thermostats. Applying a dynamic heating control algorithm can be considered one option to reduce the required DH power and optimize the DH network. Another possibility to decrease the needed power is controlling the DH flow by prioritizing DHW production and limiting the DH flow for SH. This study propose... [more]

Keywords: FCS-MPC, switching frequency estimation, switching frequency spread, total frequency spread
This work proposes a metric to assess the spread of the switching frequency profile of power converters, focusing on Finite Control Set-Model-Predictive-Control (FCS-MPC)-based converters, and analyses the effect of the filter sizing, sampling period, and cost function on the switching frequency spread. An algorithm that estimates the instantaneous switching frequency is the basis of the proposed metric. The literature review shows that only two metrics, THD and average switching frequency, are used to assess the switching frequency of FCS-MPC, but the findings of this research show that both are insufficient to characterize FCS-MPC. The main contribution of this paper is that now researchers can quantitatively assess the switching frequency spread of FCS-MPC through the proposed metric.

To stabilize the electrical mode of an arc steelmaking furnace in the initial stages of melting, it is advisable to use a high-speed current-limiting system, in addition to the traditional electrode movement control system. This system is implemented by including the primary winding of the furnace transformer choke, controlled by thyristors. The use of such a system, on the one hand, reduces the negative impact of the arc steel furnace on the the power supply network operation and, on the other, affects the operation of the electrode movement system, built on the principle of an impedance regulator. In order to analyze the mutual influences between such systems, a mathematical model for the power supply and control system of the arc steelmaking furnace was created. The developed model can work in real time, which corresponds to the world trends of modern control system synthesis for complex technological objects.
