Flexible Operation of Concentrating Solar Power Plant with Thermal Energy Storage Based on a Coordinated Control Strategy
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: concentrating solar power plants, control strategy, disturbance rejection, flexible operation
With the ambition of achieving carbon neutrality worldwide, renewable energy is flourishing. However, due to the inherent uncertainties and intermittence, operation flexibility of controllable systems is critical to accommodate renewables. Existing studies mainly focus on improving the flexibility of conventional plants, while no attention has been paid to the flexible operation of concentrating solar power with thermal energy storage (CSP-TES) systems. To this end, the ultimate goal of this work is to investigate the potentiality and realization of CSP-TES systems to flexibly operate in grid system regulation. With this goal, the dynamic characteristics of a 50 MW parabolic trough collector CSP plant with molten-salt-based TES is analyzed, and its dominant control characteristics are concluded to demonstrate the possibility of the ideal. After that, a coordinated control strategy is proposed. Specifically, a disturbance observer-based feedforward−feedback control scheme and a feedforw... [more]

Faulty Section Location Method Based on Dynamic Time Warping Distance in a Resonant Grounding System
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: DTW distance, fault location, FCM clustering, resonant grounding system, transient projection method, transient signal
When a single-phase grounding fault occurs in a resonant grounding system, the determination of the fault location remains a significant challenge due to the small fault current and the instability of the grounding arc. In order to solve the problem of low protection sensitivity when a high-resistance grounding fault occurs in a resonant grounding system, this paper proposes a fault location method based on the combination of dynamic time warping (DTW) distance and fuzzy C-means (FCM) clustering. By analyzing the characteristics of the zero-sequence current upstream and downstream of the fault point when a single-phase grounding fault occurs in the resonant grounding system, it is concluded that the waveform similarity on both sides of the fault point is low. DTW distance can be used to measure the similarity of two time series, and has the characteristics of good fault tolerance and synchronization error tolerance. According to the rule that the DTW value of faulty section is much lar... [more]

Approximation of Fractional Order PIλDμ-Controller Transfer Function Using Chain Fractions
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: approximation, chain fraction, dynamic characteristics, fractional order transfer function, PIλDμ-controller
The approximation of a fractional order PIλDμ-controller transfer function using a chain fraction theory is considered. Analytical expressions for the approximation of s±α components of the transfer functions of PIλDμ-controllers were obtained through the application of the chain fraction theory. Graphs of transition functions and frequency characteristics of Dμ (α = μ = 0.5) and Iλ (α = λ = −0.5) parts for five different decomposition orders were obtained and analyzed. The results showed the possibility of applying the approximation of the PIλDμ-controller transfer function by the method of chain fractions with different valuesof λ and μ. For comparison, the transfer functions with the same order polynomials, obtained by the methods of Oustaloup transformation and chain fractions, were approximated for α = ±0.5. The analysis proved the advantages of using the chain fraction method to approximate the transfer function of the PIλDμ-controller. The performed approximation opens up the po... [more]

Modeling and Numerical Simulation of the Inlet Velocity on Oil−Water Two-Phase Vapor Separation Efficiency by the Hydrocyclone
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: centrifugal force, cyclone separation, oil–water separation, pressure-controlled pyrolysis, two-phase vapor separation
The density of tar vapor and water vapor produced by coal pyrolysis is different. Different centrifugal forces will be generated when they flow through the hydrocyclone. The water vapor and tar vapor are divided into inner and outer layers. According to this phenomenon, the moisture in the tar can be removed. In this paper, a Eulerian gas−liquid two-phase flow model is established by numerical simulation to study the effect of inlet velocity on the separation effect of a designed hydrocyclone (split ratio 0.2). The results show that the inlet velocity and moisture content have an influence on the volume distribution characteristics, tangential velocity, axial velocity, pressure drop distribution, and separation efficiency of tar vapor and water vapor in the hydrocyclone. When the inlet velocity increases from 2.0 to 12.0 m/s, the central swirl intensity increases, and the negative pressure sweep range at the overflow outlet increases. The axial velocity increased from 2.8 to 14.9 m/s,... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: converters, grid, induction generator, inverters, pitch angle, STATCOM, stationary reference frame, synchronous reference frame, wind energy
High penetration of wind power into the grid necessitates the coordinated action of wind energy conversion systems and the grid. A suitable generation control is required to fulfill the grid integration requirements, especially during faults. A system using a pair of voltage source converters with a squirrel cage induction generator coupled to a wind turbine is proposed to provide fault ride-through during grid faults. A threefold action is used for providing the effective fault ride-through via coordinated action of the machine side and the grid side converter. The entire wind energy conversion system is controlled such that the wind turbine remains connected even during the faults. To implement the threefold action: (i) A decoupled current controller is placed in the grid side converter, which separately controls the positive and negative sequence currents arising during faults. The grid side converter controller is capable of eliminating the double frequency oscillations at the dc-l... [more]

Automatic Optimization of Input Split and Bias Voltage in Digitally Controlled Dual-Input Doherty RF PAs
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: digital input control, Doherty amplifier, dual-input power amplifiers, Optimization, parameter search, RF power amplifiers
Digitally controlled Dual-Input Doherty Power Amplifiers (DIDPAs) are becoming increasingly popular due to the flexible input signal splitting between the main and auxiliary stages. Nevertheless, the presence of many degrees of freedom, e.g., input amplitude split and phase displacement as well as biasing for multiple stages, often involves inefficient trial-and-error procedures to reach a suitable PA performance. This article presents automated parameter setting based on coordinate descent or Bayesian optimizations, demonstrating an improvement in the performance in terms of RF output power and power-added efficiency (PAE) in the presence of broadband-modulated signals, yet maintaining suitable linear behavior for, e.g., communications applications.

An DPWM for Active DC-Link Type Quasi-Z-Source Inverter to Reduce Component Voltage Rating
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: active quasi-Z-source inverter, DC-link type, discontinuous pulse width modulation, impedance-source inverter, switching commutation reduction
The conventional DC-link type quasi-Z-source inverter has been known as a buck−boost inverter with a low component voltage rating. This paper proposes an active DC-link type quasi-Z-source inverter by adding one active switch and one diode to the impedance-source network to enhance the voltage gain of the inverter. As a result, the component voltage rating of the inverter is significantly reduced, which is demonstrated through some comparisons between the proposed topology and others. A discontinuous pulse width modulation (DPWM) scheme is proposed to control the inverter, which reduces the number of commutations compared to the traditional strategy. Under this approach, the insertion of a shoot-through state does not cause any extra commutations compared to the conventional voltage-source inverter. Details about control implementation, steady-state analysis, and design guidelines are also presented in this paper. Simulation and a laboratory prototype have been built to test the propos... [more]

Nonlinear Self-Synchronizing Current Control for Grid-Connected Photovoltaic Inverters
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: grid angle estimation, photovoltaic system, self-synchronization current control
Three-phase inverters for photovoltaic grid-connected applications typically require some form of grid voltage phase-angle detection in order to properly synchronize to the grid and control real and reactive power generation. Typically, a phase-locked loop scheme is used to determine this real-time phase angle information. However, in the present work, a novel method is proposed whereby the phase angle of the grid can be accurately identified solely via the grid current feedback. This phase-angle observer is incorporated into a current controller which can manage the real and reactive power of the grid-connected PV inverter system. Moreover, the maximum power point of the photovoltaic arrays is achieved without using a DC−DC converter. The proposed method achieves the grid current and DC-link voltage control objectives without the knowledge of the grid information and without the need for a cascaded control scheme. The design of this combined observer/controller scheme is motivated and... [more]

Electric vehicles are regarded as a significant way to mitigate the global energy crisis and the environmental pollution problem. Motor control is a very important part for electric vehicles. As for hardware, a motor controller usually has components such as a power module, microprocessor unit, IGBT driver, sensors, and resolver-to-digital convertor. As for software, a field-oriented control (FOC) with space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) is a popular method, while model predictive control (MPC) has recently shown great potential in motor drives. In this paper, both FOC and MPC are discussed and the performances are compared based on experiments. As the implementation is on a digital processor, the discretization and normalization are addressed, and the flux observer and speed estimation are discussed. Some practical issues for implementation are also talked about, such as field weakening control, overmodulation, etc. This paper focuses on how to implement the improved motor con... [more]

A Novel Fault Diagnosis Approach for the Manufacturing Processes of Permanent Magnet Actuators for Renewable Energy Systems
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: fault diagnosis, manufacturing process, permanent magnet actuator, renewable energy systems, Surrogate Model
A permanent magnet actuator (PMA) is a critical device for transforming, transmitting, and protecting electrical energy in renewable energy systems. The reliability of a PMA exerts a direct effect on the operational safety, stability, and reliability of renewable energy systems. An effective fault diagnosis and adjustments for manufacturing processes (MPs) are vital for improving the reliability of a PMA. However, the state-of-the-art fault diagnosis methods are mainly used for single process parameters, extensive sample data, and automated manufacturing systems under real-time monitoring and are not applicable to a PMA with low levels of automation and high human factor-induced uncertainties. This study proposes a novel fault diagnosis approach based on a surrogate model and machine learning for multiple manufacturing processes of a PMA with insufficient training data due to human factor uncertainties. February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: bipolar pulses, isolated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT), magnetic switch, Marx generator, modular structure, nanosecond pulsed electric field (nsPEF), pulsed power
The application of the nanosecond pulsed electric field (nsPEF) for biomedical treatments has gained more interest in recent decades due to the development of pulsed power technologies which provides the ability to control the electric field dose applied during tests. In this context, the proposed paper describes a new architecture of solid-state high-voltage pulse generators (SS-HVPG) designed to generate fully customised sequences of quasi-rectangular pulses. The idea is based on the combination of semiconductor switches (IGBT/MOSFET) known for their flexibility and controllability with special magnetic switches to build compact and modular generators. The proposed structure is inspired by the most known pulse generator of Marx, but mixes its two variants for negative and positive polarities. Thus, the polarity of the generated pulses can be freely selected. In addition to that, the use of IGBTs/MOSFET ensures a tunable repetition rate and pulse width. The capacitors are charged via... February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: DFIG, multi-machine system and reactive power control, PMSG, solar PV, transient stability
The impact on the stability of power systems is rising as the penetration level of renewable energy with sporadic natures rises rapidly on the grid. However, the impact of different types of renewable energy sources (wind, solar) and their combination on system stability varies even with the same penetration level. This paper concentrates mainly on the stability analysis of multi-machine systems connected to various types of renewable energy sources. The study presents a simple and novel control technique named automatic reactive power support (ARS) for both single and combinations of renewable sources by injecting the available reactive power into the system during fault through converters to enhance system stability. The permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) and doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) are both considered as wind generators in this paper for comparison. In addition, transient stability enhancement is carried out by improving critical clearing time of a three-pha... [more]

A Comparative Study of Robust MPC and Stochastic MPC of Wind Power Generation System
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: nonlinear system, predictive control, probabilistic constraint, uncertain system, wind power generation system
In this paper, a complete comparison analysis of two advanced control algorithms, namely robust model predictive control (MPC) and stochastic MPC, is performed in order to optimize the operation of a wind power generation system (WPGS). The power maximization often conflicts with the mechanical load experienced by the turbine in the full-load region (i.e., the higher the power extracted, the higher the load) under the wind speed disturbance, thereby leading to high maintenance cost resulting from the fatigue damage. Thus, a typical 5 MW wind turbine operating in a high-speed region is considered to guarantee system security and economy. The robust MPC is designed by utilizing the min−max framework to track steady-state optimum operating reference trajectory with the deterministic constraint of output power, while the stochastic MPC is constructed by incorporating the invariant set theory to also ensure the system security subjecting to the probabilistic constraint of output power. The... [more]

Multi-Model-Based Predictive Control for Divisional Regulation in the Direct Air-Cooling Condenser
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: backpressure, direct air-cooling condenser, divisional regulation, multi-model, plume recirculation
Flow distortions caused by ambient wind can have complex negative effects on the performance of direct air-cooling condensers, which use air as their cooling medium. A control-oriented model of the direct air-cooling condenser model, considering fan volumetric effectiveness and plume recirculation rate, was developed, and its linearization model was derived. The influences of fan volumetric effectiveness and plume recirculation rate on backpressure were analyzed, and the optimal backpressure was calculated. To improve both the transient performance and steady-state energy saving of the condenser, a multi-model-based predictive control strategy was proposed to divisionally adjust the fan array. Four division schemes of the direct air-cooling fan array constituted the local models, and in each division scheme, axial fans were divided into three groups according to the wind direction: windward fans, leeward fans, and other fans. The simulation results showed that the turbine backpressure... [more]

Energy-Efficient Electro-Hydraulic Power Source Driven by Variable-Speed Motor
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: cleaner production of industry, electro-hydraulic, pressure control, variable-speed drives
Hydraulic systems are widely used in industry due to their small size-to-power ratios and their ability to produce very large linear force and torque. In traditional hydraulic systems, a variable pump driven by an electric motor is often used as power source. In these systems, the electro-hydraulic power source always operates at its rated speed, causing lots of noise and low energy consumption, especially in no-load and light-load conditions. These problems can be solved by changing the speed of the electric motor according to the load state of the electro-hydraulic power source. In order to improve the energy efficiency of the electro-hydraulic power source and realize pressure and flow control on the basis of low cost, this paper presents the power-source structure of a variable-displacement pressure-compensated pump driven by a variable-speed electric motor; this controls the flow by adjusting the electric motor speed and controls the pressure with the variable-displacement pressur... The quality of electricity is a very important indicator. The durability and reliable operation of all connected devices depend on the quality of the network voltage. Rapid changes in loads, changes in network connections and the presence of uncontrolled energy sources require the development of new voltage regulation systems. This requires voltage regulation systems capable of responding quickly to sudden voltage changes. In substations with control transformers, it is possible thanks to the use of semiconductor tap changers. Moreover, voltage regulation and reactive power compensation systems should be built as one system. This is due to the close dependence of voltage and reactive power in the network node. Therefore, it was proposed to use artificial intelligence methods to build a new voltage regulation and reactive power compensation system using all measurement voltages of network nodes. An Adaptive Hybrid Control of Grid Tied Inverter for the Reduction of Total Harmonic Distortion and Improvement of Robustness against Grid Impedance Variation
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: adaptive control, grid-tied inverter, hybrid control, stability performance, total harmonic distortion
Grid-tied inverters play an efficient role in the integration of renewable energy resources with utility grids. Motivation: However, the interconnection between power converters and the grid has been seen to be responsible for various stability issues such as weak grid, and under weak grid conditions the injection of power to the grid becomes a challenging task due to continuously varying grid impedance affecting the stability margins as a result. Additionally, the grid impedance-related issues boost the voltage harmonics which further devalue its performance. These voltage harmonics propagate through the Phase-Locked Loop (PLL) circuit to the control unit of the inverter which in turn amplifies the low order harmonics of the inverter. Method: The aim of this research is to introduce a novel strategy that decreases the effect of grid impedance-variations on the performance and stability of an inverter. Hence, an adaptive hybrid mode control technique consisting of two parts is proposed... [more]
