Room Air-Conditioning Operating as a Filling Box
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: buoyant jet, confined space, HVAC, integral model, slot source, thermal stratification
The air temperature variation of a closed room, well insulated, during the initial time of operation of air-conditioning systems up to temperature stabilization, is simulated by a two-dimensional integral model as a quasi-steady-state phenomenon. The model equipped with a conservation equation for tracer concentration or relative temperature, including the stratification parameter, is well qualified. The flow leaving the air conditioning device forms an inclined buoyant jet which bends over and meets the room floor, where it spreads sideways forming a layer with jet temperature. A sequence of layers, which affect the jet temperature through entrainment, are produced by a novel bottom-up technique. The layer air temperatures are calculated through the bulk dilution of a near bottom jet cross-section, which feeds each new layer. The model simulated a real case and predicted the transient variation of room air and buoyant jet temperatures up to stabilisation. It also predicted the time ne... [more]

February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: evolutionary game, heterogeneous emotions, quality innovation synergy, RDEU, shared manufacturing
Shared manufacturing provides a new path for the transformation and development of the manufacturing industry, but challenges such as low quality and poor positivity for quality improvement limit the positive role of shared manufacturing. Considering the influences of heterogeneous emotions of subjects on quality decision making, the theory of rank-dependent expected utility (RDEU) and evolutionary game theory were integrated to establish an evolutionary game model of shared manufacturing quality innovation synergy with multi-agent participation and analyze how sentiment affects motivation for quality improvement. The study showed that: (1) emotions, an irrational factor, can significantly change the stable state of the evolution of the shared manufacturing quality innovation synergetic system by influencing the decision-making behavior of decision makers; (2) in terms of the specific microscopic influence mechanism, rationality is the key to ensuring that the behavioral decisions of d... Optimal Current Allocation Strategy for Hybrid Hierarchical HVDC System with Parallel Operation of High-Voltage and Low-Voltage DC Lines
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: high-voltage and low-voltage converters, hybrid hierarchical HVDC, optimal current allocation, transmission loss function, voltage deviation
For long-distance and bulk-power delivery of new energy, high-voltage direct current (HVDC) is a more effective way than high-voltage alternative current (HVAC). In view of the current capacity disparity between line commutated converter (LCC) and voltage source converter (VSC), a hybrid hierarchical HVDC topology with parallel operation of 800 kV and 400 kV DC lines is investigated. The optimal current allocation method for hybrid hierarchical HVDC is proposed distinct from the same rated current command configuration method of high-voltage and low-voltage converters in traditional topology. Considering the transmission loss reduction of the HVDC system, a multi-order fitting function of transmission loss including LCC converter stations, VSC converter stations and DC lines is established. To minimize the transmission loss and the voltage deviation of key DC nodes comprehensively, a multi-objective genetic algorithm and maximum satisfaction method are utilized to obtain the optimal al... Analysis and Implementation of a Bidirectional Converter with Soft Switching Operation
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: bidirectional DC converter, frequency modulation, series resonant converter, wide voltage gain
This paper presents a soft switching direct current (DC) converter, with the benefits of bidirectional power conversion and wide-ranging voltage operation for battery charging and discharging capability. A series resonant circuit with variable switching frequency modulation is used to achieve the advantages of soft switching turn-on or turn-off of semiconductor devices. Therefore, the switching power losses in power devices can be reduced. A symmetric resonant circuit topology with a capacitor−inductor−inductor−capacitor (CLLC) structure is adopted to achieve a bidirectional power conversion capability for battery storage units in electric vehicle applications. Due to the symmetric circuit structure on both input and output sides, the converter has similar voltage gains for each power flow operation. In order to overcome the drawback of narrow voltage range operation in conventional resonant converters, a variable transformer turns ratio is adopted in the circuit, to achieve wide outpu... [more]

Impact of Residential Real-World Wood Stove Operation on Air Quality concerning PM2.5 Immission
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: immission measurements, PM2.5 concentration, PM2.5 pollution in residential areas, wood stove operation
In Germany, the number of small wood-burning combustion plants was around 11 million in 2020. The PM2.5 immissions caused by the operation of these combustion plants are already about as high as those from traffic exhaust gases. Thus, particulate matter immissions occur not only on busy roads but also in residential areas. Since there are few official measuring stations for PM2.5 in residential areas and suburbs, this study determined PM2.5 concentrations from November 2020 to June 2021 at three stations (urban, suburban, and residential) in the Karlsruhe area. Simultaneous measurements of PM2.5 at the three locations have been implemented to determine short-term (peaks), medium-term, and long-term particulate matter levels and to assign them to sources by observation, considering wind direction. Illustratively, PM2.5 immission levels in January and May 2021 were compared in this paper. The comparison of the particulate matter immissions measured in the urban and residential area in Ja... A Continuous Conical-Mill Operation for Dry Coating of Pharmaceutical Powders: The Role of Processing Time
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: conical mill, dry coating, excipients
Over the last decade, the conical mill has emerged as a potential piece of equipment to use for continuous dry coating pharmaceutical powders. In this work, silicon dioxide was used as a guest particle on two excipients, fast flow lactose (FFL) and grade PH200 microcrystalline cellulose (MCC), for dry coating by a conical mill with a modified screen that permitted batch and continuous mode operation. Samples were pre-processed in a V-blender. SEM images, particle size distribution, and EDS mapping were used to characterise the treated powders. Pre-processed samples showed some discrete coating of the host particle. After batch processing, the samples were covered with a complete coating. When processed at high impeller speed, coating of FFL was a mix of A200P and FFL fines generated by attrition. Continuous mode processed samples, which had a lower processing time, were coated discretely and showed a better coating than the pre-processed samples. Increasing guest/host mass ratio with F... February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: Adeno-associated virus, bioreactor, continuous, gene therapy, microcarriers, PEI, transfection, transient expression
Adeno-associated virus vectors (AAV) are reported to have a great potential for gene therapy, however, a major bottleneck for this kind of therapy is the limitation of production capacity. Higher specific AAV vector yield is often reported for adherent cell systems compared to cells in suspension, and a microcarrier-based culture is well established for the culture of anchored cells on a larger scale. The purpose of the present study was to explore how microcarrier cultures could provide a solution for the production of AAV vectors based on the triple plasmid transfection of HEK293T cells in a stirred tank bioreactor. In the present study, cells were grown and expanded in suspension, offering the ease of this type of operation, and were then anchored on microcarriers in order to proceed with transfection of the plasmids for transient AAV vector production. This process was developed in view of a bioreactor application in a 200 mL stirred-tank vessel where shear stress aspects were stud... [more]

February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: gas storage reservoir, injection and mining operation, medium- and low-permeability oil reservoir, phase seepage curve, seepage law
The construction of underground gas storage mostly focuses on depleted gas reservoirs. However, the depleted gas reservoir used to build underground gas storage in China is located far from the main gas consumption economic zone. It is necessary to reconstruct underground gas storage using nearby reservoirs in order to meet the needs of economic development. The complex three-phase seepage characteristics encountered in the process of reconstruction of underground gas storage reservoirs seriously affect their storage and injection production capacities. Combined with the mechanism of multiphase seepage and the multicycle injection production mode during the process of gas storage construction, the feasibility of rebuilding gas storage in medium- and low-permeability reservoirs was evaluated through relative permeability experiments and core injection production experiments. The results showed that the mutual driving of two-phase oil−water systems will affect the storage space and seepa... [more]

Model-Based Analysis for Ethylene Carbonate Hydrogenation Operation in Industrial-Type Tubular Reactors
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: ethylene carbonate hydrogenation, ethylene glycol, Methanol, multiscale reactor model, operation window, reactor analysis
Hydrogenation of ethylene carbonate (EC) to co-produce methanol (MeOH) and ethylene glycol (EG) offers an atomically economic route for CO2 utilization. Herein, aided with bench and pilot plant data, we established engineering a kinetics model and multiscale reactor models for heterogeneous EC hydrogenation using representative industrial-type reactors. Model-based analysis indicates that single-stage adiabatic reactors, despite a moderate temperature rise of 12 K, suffer from a narrow operational window delimited by EC condensation at lower temperatures and intense secondary EG hydrogenation at higher temperatures. Boiling water cooled multi-tubular reactors feature near-isothermal operation and exhibit better operability, especially under high pressure and low space velocity. Conduction oil-cooled reactors show U-type axial temperature profiles, rendering even wider operational windows regarding coolant temperatures than the water-cooled reactor. February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: deep borehole heat exchanger, geothermal energy, heat injection and storage, heating and cooling
Medium-depth and deep geothermal energy has been widely used because of its abundant resources and supply stability. Recently, attention has been given to the closed-loop heat extraction system using a deep borehole heat exchanger (DBHE), which enables geothermal energy to be harnessed almost everywhere. In this study, a check valve is adopted in a DBHE system in which the whole section of the well is used for heat extraction in winter during building heating and the upper part of the well is used for heat injection in summer during building cooling. The influence of injected water flowrates, water inlet temperatures, depths of the check valve and formation of thermal conductivities on the performance of this novel DBHE system has been investigated. It is found that heat injection through the upper part of the well in summer can improve the heat extraction rates to a certain extent during the heating season. In summer, the inlet temperature of water has a great influence on the heat in... [more]

Co-Treatment of Landfill Leachate and Liquid Fractions of Anaerobic Digestate in an Industrial-Scale Membrane Bioreactor System
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: C/N ratio, denitrification, landfill leachate, liquid fractions of anaerobic digestate, membrane bioreactor, nitrification, operational resources, selective oxygen uptake rate
The management of the liquid fraction of digestate produced from the anaerobic digestion of biodegradable municipal solid waste is a difficult affair, as its land application is limited due to high ammonium concentrations and the municipal waste that water treatment plants struggle to treat due to high pollutant loads. The amount of leachate and the pollutant load in the leachate produced by landfills usually decreases with the time, which increases the capacity of landfill leachate treatment plants (LLTPs) to treat additional wastewater. In order to solve the above two challenges, the co-treatment of landfill leachate and the liquid fraction of anaerobic digestate in an industrial-scale LLTP was investigated along with the long-term impacts of the liquid fraction of anaerobic digestate on biocoenosis and its impact on LLTP operational expenses. The co-treatment of landfill leachate and liquid fraction of anaerobic digestate was compared to conventional leachate treatment in an industr... [more]

February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: catalyst, deactivation, hydrotreating, model, residue
Residue catalytic hydrogenation was carried out in a two-stage downflow fixed-bed reactor system, with a HDM catalyst in the first stage and HDS catalyst in the second one, to mimic the industrial operation. The experiments were run at five sets of temperatures (395 °C (first reactor)/405 °C (second reactor), 400 °C/410 °C, 405 °C/415 °C, 410 °C/420 °C, and 420 °C/430 °C). It was found that the initial stage deactivation was mainly caused by the rapid deposition of coke. Gradually, the deposition of metal sulfides leads to a slow deactivation in the middle stage of operation. A deactivation model that considers the catalyst activity as a function of TOS was proposed and applied to the hydrotreating reaction. The deactivation parameters of HDCCR, HDS, HDNi, and HDV in the two reactors were obtained by fitting the experimental data at the outlet of the two reactors. According to the deactivation curves of catalysts, it is proposed that the deactivation of HDM catalyst is faster than that... [more]

Research on Pore Pressure Detection While Drilling Based on Mechanical Specific Energy
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: compound drilling, drill string mechanics, effective stress, formation pore pressure, mechanical specific energy
The detection of the formation of pore pressure while drilling is of great importance to ensure safe drilling operations. At present, the dc-exponent concept is mainly used to detect pore pressure while drilling. The dc-exponent concept is based on the theory of shale compaction, which is limited when used in carbonate rocks. A mechanical specific energy (MSE)-based method is proposed to detect pore pressure in deep, complex intervals. The method is based on the theory that the energy consumed by the bit to break and remove a unit volume of rock can reflect the effective stress and pore pressure of the rock in situ. In this paper, a torque and weight on bit (WOB) transfer model is proposed for estimating the downhole torque and WOB using drill string mechanics. Meanwhile, the rotary speed and torque of the positive displacement motors under compound drilling are considered, and the model of total MSE under compound drilling is modified. The MSE-based method was used to estimate the por... [more]

Fast Solution of Pressure and Stress of Dry Contact Using Multigrid Techniques
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: dry contact, friction lining, multi-level multi-integration, multigrid techniques, wire rope
Fast computation of the elastic deformation integrals of dry contact is accomplished using multigrid techniques. The method is called multi-level multi-integration, which enables the efficient numerical solution of contact pressure for large dry-contact problems. The computing effort can be reduced to O (NlogN) operations, compared to that of classical solution methods, O (N2). The fast integration technique can be straightforwardly applied to computing sub-surface stresses. As an example, the pressure and stress distribution of the contact of wire rope and friction lining, a large calculation due to the wire rope’s complicated construction, were fast solved. Subsequently, the friction lining’s transient temperature, when the wire rope was sliding, was solved using multigrid techniques.

Influences of the Braking Effect of Ruler EMBr on Molten Steel Flow and Steel−Slag Interface Fluctuation in a Continuous Casting Mold
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: continuous casting, electromagnetic braking, mold, molten steel flow, steel–slag interface fluctuation
Electromagnetic braking (EMBr) technology, as one of the most effective technologies in the continuous casting process, provides an effective tool for improving the internal and external defects of steel products. Specifically, the EMBr technology takes the benefit of the generation of Lorentz force to decrease flow instability, mold powder entrapment, and surface defects, if applied properly. For this purpose, to gain a clear understanding of the effect of EMBr technology on the continuous casting process, a commonly used EMBr technology, namely ruler EMBr technology, is applied in the current work to investigate the dynamic behaviors of molten steel flow and steel−slag interface fluctuation inside a slab mold. Furthermore, to obtain a desirable braking effect of the ruler EMBr technology, operational parameters including the magnetic flux density, submerged entry nozzle (SEN) depth, and magnetic pole location are numerically investigated.
