Reactive PLIF Method for Characterisation of Micromixing in Continuous High-Throughput Chemical Reactors
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: fluorescein, micromixing, PLIF, Rhodamine B, T-jet mixer, test-reactions
This work aimed to test and optimise reactive Planar Laser-Induced Fluorescence (PLIF) methods for the visualisation of the micromixing regions in chemical reactors using standard PLIF and Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) equipment with the laser source 512 nm. Two methods were tested: (i) an acid−base reaction with fluorescein as the reaction-sensitive tracer and (ii) Fenton’s reaction, with Rhodamine B as the reaction tracer. Both test-reactions were studied in stopped-flow equipment to define suitable operational conditions, namely the chemical composition of the inflow streams, the concentration of reagents and fluorophore, and suitable excitation light wavelength. The visualisation of the micromixing regions was tested in a continuous flow reactor with a T-jet geometry. A laser light sheet emitted from an Nd:YAG laser illuminated the axial section of the demonstration reactor. The mixing dynamics and the reaction course were visualised with the acid−base reactive PLIF images. Fent... [more]

Process Intensification in Photocatalytic Decomposition of Formic Acid over a TiO2 Catalyst by Forced Periodic Modulation of Concentration, Temperature, Flowrate and Light Intensity
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: forced periodic modulation, formic acid decomposition, non-stationary CSTR, Process Intensification, TiO2
The effect of forced periodic modulation of several input parameters on the rate of photocatalytic decomposition of formic acid over a TiO2 thin film catalyst has been investigated in a continuously stirred tank reactor. The kinetic model was adopted based on the literature and it includes acid adsorption, desorption steps, the formation of photocatalytic active sites and decomposition of the adsorbed species over the active titania sites. A reactor model was developed that describes mass balances of reactive species. The analysis of the reactor was performed with a computer-aided nonlinear frequency response method. Initially, the effect of amplitude and frequency of four input parameters (flowrate, acid concentration, temperature and light intensity) were studied. All single inputs provided only a minor improvement, which did not exceed 4%. However, a modulation of two input parameters, inlet flowrate and the acid molar fraction, considerably improved the acid conversion from 80 to 9... [more]

Probabilistic Vulnerability Assessment of Transmission Lines Considering Cascading Failures
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: cascading failures, fault chain, transmission line vulnerability
The prevention of cascading failures and large-scale power outages of power grids by identifying weak links has become one of the key topics in power systems research. In this paper, a vulnerability radius index is proposed to identify the initial fault, and a fault chain model of cascading failure is developed with probabilistic attributes to identify the set of fault chains that have a significant impact on the safe and stable operation of power grids. On this basis, a method for evaluating the vulnerability of transmission lines based on a multi-criteria decision analysis is proposed, which can quickly identify critical transmission lines in the process of cascading failure. Finally, the proposed model and method for identifying vulnerable lines during the cascading failure process is demonstrated on the IEEE-118 bus system.

Complex Network Analysis of Photovoltaic Plant Operations and Failure Modes
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: complex network analysis, data fusion, fault prognosis, photovoltaic plants, sensor network
This paper presents a novel data-driven approach, based on sensor network analysis in Photovoltaic (PV) power plants, to unveil hidden precursors in failure modes. The method is based on the analysis of signals from PV plant monitoring, and advocates the use of graph modeling techniques to reconstruct and investigate the connectivity among PV field sensors, as is customary for Complex Network Analysis (CNA) approaches. Five month operation data are used in the present study. The results showed that the proposed methodology is able to discover specific hidden dynamics, also referred to as emerging properties in a Complexity Science perspective, which are not visible in the observation of individual sensor signal but are closely linked to the relationships occurring at the system level. The application of exploratory data analysis techniques on those properties demonstrated, for the specific plant under scrutiny, potential for early fault detection.

Energy Balance and Local Unsteady Loss Analysis of Flows in a Low Specific Speed Model Pump-Turbine in the Positive Slope Region on the Pump Performance Curve
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: energy balance, instability, positive slope, pump-turbine, unsteady loss analysis
The positive slope on the pump performance curve of pump-turbines suggests potential operational instabilities in pump mode. Previous research has indicated that the increase of the hydraulic loss caused by sudden changes of flow patterns in pump-turbines is responsible for the positive slope, however its detailed flow mechanism is still unclear. A low specific speed model pump-turbine was numerically investigated against experiments in the present study, by applying unsteady RANS (Reynolds-Averaged Navier−Stokes equations) simulations with a v2-f turbulence model. The mechanism of occurrence of the positive slope on the pump performance curve was discussed regarding the energy balance, as this region appears when the value of ∂ P u ∂ Q is larger than the critical value P u Q . An unsteady local loss analysis, derived from the energy equation, was conducted to illustrate the contribution of local flow patterns to the loss in corresponding hydraulic componen... [more]

Visualization of Operational Performance of Grid-Connected PV Systems in Selected European Countries
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: annual yield, GIS, performance ratio, PV system, spatial analyses
This paper presents the results of the analyses of operational performance of small-sized residential PV systems, connected to the grid, in the Netherlands and some other European countries over three consecutive years. Web scraping techniques were employed to collect detailed yield data at high time resolution (5⁻15 min) from a large number (31,844) of systems with 741 MWp of total capacity, delivering data continuously for at least one year. Annual system yield data was compared from small and medium-sized installations. Cartography and spatial analysis techniques in a geographic information system (GIS) were used to visualize yield and performance ratio, which greatly facilitates the assessment of performance for geographically scattered systems. Variations in yield and performance ratios over the years were observed with higher values in 2015 due to higher irradiation values. The potential of specific yield and performance maps lies in the updating of monitoring databases, quality... [more]

A Smart Grid Framework for Optimally Integrating Supply-Side, Demand-Side and Transmission Line Management Systems
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: ConCEMS, demand response, DTLR, dynamic pricing, ExC-GA
A coordinated centralized energy management system (ConCEMS) is presented in this paper that seeks to integrate for optimal grid operation—the supply side energy management system (SSEMS), home energy management system (HEMS) and transmission line management system (TLMS). ConCEMS in ensuring the optimal operation of an IEEE 30-bus electricity network harmonizes the individual objective function of SSEMS, HEMS and TLMS to evolve an optimal dispatch of participating demand response (DR) loads that does not violate transmission line ampacity limits (TLMS constraint) while minimizing consumer cost (HEMS constraint) and supply side operations cost (SSEMS constraint). An externally constrained genetic algorithm (ExC-GA) that is influenced by feedback from TLMS is also presented that intelligently varies the dispatch time of participating DR loads to meet the individual objective functions. Hypothetical day ahead dynamic pricing schemes (Price1, Price2 and Price3) have also been adopted alon... [more]

Load Concentration Factor Based Analytical Method for Optimal Placement of Multiple Distribution Generators for Loss Minimization and Voltage Profile Improvement
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: exhaustive load flow (ELF), improved analytic (IA), load concentration factor (LCF), operational power factor, loss minimization, loss sensitivity factor (LSF), multiple distributed generatores (DGs), primary distribution system, simultaneous optimal sizing, voltage profile improvement
This paper presents novel separate methods for finding optimal locations, sizes of multiple distributed generators (DGs) simultaneously and operational power factor in order to minimize power loss and improve the voltage profile in the distribution system. A load concentration factor (LCF) is introduced to select the optimal location(s) for DG placement. Exact loss formula based analytical expressions are derived for calculating the optimal sizes of any number of DGs simultaneously. Since neither optimizing the location nor optimizing the size is done iteratively, like existing methods do, the simulation time is reduced considerably. The exhaustive method is used to find the operational power factor, and it is shown with the results that the losses are further reduced and voltage profile is improved by operating the DGs at operational power factor. Results for power loss reduction and voltage profile improvement in IEEE 37 and 119 node radial distribution systems are presented and comp... [more]

Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: behind-the-meter (BTM), forecast, photovoltaic (PV), spatio-temporal, strategic training
Due to the growing penetration of behind-the-meter (BTM) photovoltaic (PV) installations, accurate solar energy forecasts are required for a reliable economic energy system operation. A new hybrid methodology is proposed in this paper with a sequence of one-step ahead models to accumulate 144 h for a small-scale BTM PV site. Three groups of models with different inputs are developed to cover 6 days of forecasting horizon, with each group trained for each hour of the above zero irradiance. In addition, a novel dataset preselection is proposed, and neighboring solar farms’ power predictions are used as a feature to boost the accuracy of the model. Two techniques are selected: XGBoost and CatBoost. An extensive assessment for 1 year is conducted to evaluate the proposed method. Numerical results highlight that training the models with the previous, current, and 1 month ahead from the previous year referenced by the target month can improve the model’s accuracy. A Photovoltaic System Model Integrating FAIR Digital Objects and Ontologies
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: data management, FAIR digital objects, ontology, photovoltaic system
Smart grids of the future will create and provide huge data volumes, which are subject to FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) data management solutions when used within the scientific domain and for operation. FAIR Digital Objects (FDOs) provide access to (meta)data, and ontologies explicitly describe metadata as well as application data objects and domains. The present paper proposes a novel approach to integrate FAIR digital objects and ontologies as metadata models in order to support data access for energy researchers, energy research applications, operational applications and energy information systems. As the first example domain to be modeled using an ontology and to get integrated with FAIR digital objects, a photovoltaic (PV) system model is selected. For the given purpose, a discussion of existing energy ontologies shows the necessity to develop a new PV ontology. By integration of FDOs, this new PV ontology is introduced in the present paper. Cooperation of a Non-Linear Receiver with a Three-Phase Power Grid
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: Currents Physical Components, non-sinusoidal power, nonlinear receiver, power theory
This article presents an analysis of electrical parameters in a three-phase circuit characterized by the generation of harmonics. The Currents Physical Components (CPC) power theory for three-phase circuits were used. Relationships for three-wire circuits were used, and mathematical relationships were determined to enable decomposition into those components that depend on the direction of energy flow and the reasons for their creation. A calculation example using the previously determined dependencies was presented, and the results of the calculations were discussed. When mathematical analyses are required in circuits with non-linear receivers, and in particular, when there is a cooperation of several such receivers with a common power grid, the calculation concept presented is important. The generation of identical harmonic orders by several receivers causes a disturbance in the direction of energy flow in the power grid. For this reason, the case of a non-linear receiver generating h... [more]

Effects on Frequency Stability of Power System for Photovoltaic High-Penetration Ratio Grid-Connected Power Generation
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: frequency, photovoltaic power generation, stability
In this paper, the effects of three typical operation modes, namely short-circuit fault, load change, and chemical energy storage on the frequency of a regional power grid after photovoltaic asynchronous interconnection were studied with different penetration ratios, taking the power grid in Northern Henan Province as the research object. It was found that with an increase in the photovoltaic penetration ratio, the maximum value of the system frequency and the fluctuation amplitude gradually increased, and the power grid system in Northern Henan became less and less stable. With an increase in the penetration ratio, the peak value of the system frequency at the corresponding node gradually increased, and the valley value gradually decreased. With an increase in load, the peak value of the frequency curve gradually increased, and the valley value gradually decreased. When photoelectricity was connected to the grid through chemical energy storage, the system stability during a short-circ... [more]

Performance Assessment for Primary Frequency Regulation of Variable-Speed Pumped Storage Plant in Isolated Power Systems
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: isolated operation mode, primary frequency regulation, sensitivity analysis, variable-speed pumped storage plants
Primary frequency regulation (PFR) is a crucial operating condition for PSPs to realise frequency modulation, and the effectiveness of PFR is significant to the stability of power system frequency. Several challenges and risks have been presented in the PFR process for conventional PSPs, especially for those which run in the isolated grid, such as water inertia, negative damping of speed governor and ultra-low frequency oscillation (ULFO). Variable-speed pumped storage plants (VSPSPs) have the potential to overcome the negative impacts on regulation performance caused by hydraulic factors, due to the advantages of rapid power regulation and independent active power control from turbine output. In this paper, the primary task is to conduct a comprehensive assessment for PFR performance of VSPSPs in isolated power systems. Initially, the hydraulic−mechanical−electrical numerical models are established. Secondly, the rotational speed stability of the pump-turbine is quantified and the adv... [more]

Despite the climate commitments made by countries in the Paris Climate Agreement adopted in 2015 and reinforced during COP 21 and with notably less success during COP 22, world carbon emissions increased in both 2021 and 2022. It is increasingly unlikely that the world will achieve the targeted 50% carbon reduction by 2030, the reduction approximately needed for reducing global temperature rise since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution to less than 1.5 deg. Transformer Fault Early Warning Analysis Based on Hierarchical Clustering Combined with Decision Trees
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: decision trees, fault early warning, hierarchical clustering, vibration features
The issues of low accuracy, poor generality, high cost of transformer fault early warning, and the subjective nature of empirical judgments made by field maintenance personnel are difficult to solve with the traditional measurement methods used during the development of the transformer. To construct a transformer fault early warning analysis, this study recommends a data-fusion-based decision tree approach for merging electrical quantity signals with a non-electrical amount of vibration signals. By merging a decision tree inference with actual operation data, a clustering center, and an early warning model, this method creates a transformer fault early warning model with self-learning ability and adaptive capabilities. After reasonable verification, the method becomes more universal and interpretable, and it can successfully conduct an early warning of transformer faults.

Keywords: battery energy storage system, distributed renewable energy sources, energy justice, energy justice in energy sharing, fair energy allocation, fair energy trading, game theory, shared energy system, solar PV
Although rooftop PV panels and battery energy storage systems have been well established for detached residential buildings, there is still a lack of access to the advantages of onsite renewable energy generation and consumption for residents of multi-unit buildings. To understand the effects of developing distributed renewable energy sources for multi-unit buildings, a new fair energy-sharing model in which different groups of residents can gain benefit from the shared energy systems is proposed. Despite the potential benefits of developing renewable technologies in multi-unit buildings, the energy trading and allocation processes in the buildings can be unfair for some groups of residents. Accordingly, this work studies the main principles of energy justice and analyses how these principles can be applied in the energy trading and allocation processes to achieve fair energy sharing. Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: boiling, critical heat flux (CHF), Hyper Vapotron (HV), nanofluid, plasma-facing components (PFCs)
Plasma-facing components (PFCs) are used as the barrier to the beam of high heat flux generated due to nuclear fusion. Therefore, efficient cooling of PFCs is required for safety and smooth operation of a fusion reactor. The Hyper Vapotron (HV) is generally used as the heat exchanger to cool down the PFCs during operation. These heat exchangers use pool and flow boiling mechanisms, and hence, their ability is inherently constrained by critical heat flux (CHF). The boiling of nanofluid is very promising as the working fluid in the HV. The efficiency of the HV increases due to the increase in CHF by applying nanofluids. However, the feasibility of nanofluid cooling in fusion reactors needs proper understanding. This paper reviews the recent developments in the utilization of boiling phenomena in nanofluid as a coolant in the HV. Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: activated carbon filter, adsorption behavior, fuel vapor mix, fuel vapor retaining system, Raman spectroscopy
In gasoline-driven vehicles, fuel vapor retaining systems are used to prevent the emission of hydrocarbons from the fuel tank into the atmosphere. In this paper, which is Part 2 of our publication, measurements of regeneration processes of the activated carbon by flushing it with humid nitrogen gas of 70% relative humidity are represented. Using purge air with high relative humidities, representing realistic conditions, it can be observed that water is accumulated in the activated carbon. For ethanol-containing fuel blends, additional accumulation of ethanol in the carbon occurs, decreasing the adsorption capacity of the carbon for standard fuel’s components considerably. State-of-the-art testing procedures use purge air with about 50% relative humidity for the regeneration of the activated carbon filters. As this often does not represent real operation conditions, the working limits of the fuel vapor retaining systems could not be identified up to now. Furthermore, the determination o... [more]

Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: Al2O3, ion-diffusion barrier, PERC solar cell module, potential-induced degradation
With the maturation of silicon-based technologies, silicon solar cells have achieved a high conversion efficiency that approaches the theoretical limit. Currently, great efforts are being made to enhance the reliability of silicon solar cells. When the silicon solar cells are made into modules, potential-induced-degradation (PID) occurs during operation because of the high voltage applied between the frame and the cells, which reduces the efficiency and output power. The diffusion of Na+ ions from the front glass and the increased leakage current along the migration path are the major causes of PID. In this work, atomic layer deposition (ALD)-grown amorphous thin Al2O3 layers are introduced underneath the front glass to prevent the diffusion of Na+ ions and the resulting PID. Accelerated PID tests showed that an ALD-grown Al2O3 layer of 30 nm could effectively suppress PID seriously affecting the conversion efficiency or light transmittance.
