Effects of Electro-Magnetic Properties of Obstacles in Magnetic Resonant Wireless Power Transfer
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: finite element analysis, magnetic resonance, obstacle, wireless power transmission
Magnetic resonant wireless power transmission (MRWPT) is a method of transmitting power over a long distance at a specific frequency. Because this system uses an alternating magnetic field, if an object with electrical/magnetic properties is placed between the transmit and receive coils, this will have a significant impact on the power transfer. In this paper, the effect of an obstacle located between two coils on the resonance frequency and transmission power is analyzed. A wireless power transmission system with a resonant frequency of 20 kHz was designed, and ferrite, aluminum, and carbon steel were selected as obstacles with permeability or conductivity. After simulating the system with finite element analysis (FEA) with these obstacles, the results were verified through actual experiments. The results show that the permeability of the obstacle decreases the resonant frequency, and the conductivity increases the resonant frequency and greatly reduces the output power. In addition,... March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: fluoroethylene carbonate, LiF, lithium metal anode, lithium primary battery, solid electrolyte interphase
The solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) film plays a significant role in the capacity and storage performance of lithium primary batteries. The electrolyte additives are essential in controlling the morphology, composition and structure of the SEI film. Herein, fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) is chosen as the additive, its effects on the lithium primary battery performance are investigated, and the relevant formation mechanism of SEI film is analyzed. By comparing the electrochemical performance of the Li/AlF3 primary batteries and the microstructure of the Li anode surface under different conditions, the evolution model of the SEI film is established. The FEC additive can decrease the electrolyte decomposition and protect the lithium metal anode effectively. When an optimal 5% FEC is added, the discharge specific capacity of the Li/AlF3 primary battery is 212.8 mAh g−1, and the discharge specific capacities are respectively 205.7 and 122.3 mAh g−1 after storage for 7 days at room temper... An Intelligent Approach for Performing Energy-Driven Classification of Buildings Utilizing Joint Electricity−Gas Patterns
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: System Identification
Keywords: building identification, gas–electricity patterns, intelligent approach, matrix profile, neural networks
Building type identification is an important task that may be used in confirming and verifying its legitimate operation. One of the main sources of information over the operation of a building is its energy consumption, with the analysis of electricity patterns being at the spotlight of a non-intrusive identification approach. However, electricity patterns are the only source of information, and therefore, their analysis imposes several restrictions. In this work, we introduce a new approach in energy-driven identification by adding one more source of information beyond the electricity pattern that may be utilized, namely the gas consumption pattern. In particular, we propose a new intelligent approach that jointly analyzes the electricity−gas patterns to provide the type of building at hand. Our approach exploits the synergism of the matrix profile data analysis technique with a feed-forward artificial neural network. This approach has applicability in the energy waste elimination thr... A Novel Model of Electromechanical Contactors for Predicting Dynamic Characteristics
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: actuator, co-simulation, computational electromagnetics, contactor
To ensure the reliability of power supply, a dual power supply structure appears in the power distribution system. Power supply switching is a complex physical process. This paper presents a novel model of electromechanical contactors. This model can simulate the multi-physics process of power switching. This article completes the simulation framework for power switching through contactors for the first time. Among them, the structural topology for contactors is also proposed. On the basis of the novel structure topology, an equivalent magnetic circuit model is established to calculate the relationship between driving force, flux linkage, current, and displacement. Then, a co-simulation model is established between the above equations and Adams to obtain the speed characteristics and flight time of the contactor. Subsequently, through the use of Fluent and its secondary development, a magnetohydrodynamic model is established, and the above-mentioned velocity characteristics are importe... [more]

Carbon Neutral China by 2060: The Role of Clean Heating Systems
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: carbon neutral, China, clean heating
Smog pollution is a severe social and environmental concern for the space-heating regions in China due to fossil-intensive space heating. To reduce polluting emissions and improve social and environmental performance, local government agencies should choose adequate cleaner space-heating technologies based on diverse local conditions. This implies that all cleaner heating solutions should be considered, including low-emissions fossil fuel district heating and low-emissions fossil fuel decentralized heating as transitional technologies, as well as biomass and electricity-driven heat pumps as long-term solutions. However, stakeholders such as policy makers, equipment manufacturers, and house owners, often lack necessary information to assess the feasibility for installing adequate heating solutions at the local level. It is therefore necessary to establish a systematic method to evaluate each heating solution in various geolocations of China. This paper reviews the current heating situat... [more]

Improved Voltage Flux-Weakening Strategy of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor in High-Speed Operation
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: flux-weakening control, high-speed operation, permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM), voltage closed-loop control
This paper presents an improved voltage flux-weakening strategy of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) in a high-speed operation. The speed control performance using voltage flux-weakening control is not affected by the motor parameters, so it is used in various motors for high-speed operations. In general, the voltage flux-weakening control uses voltage references to generate a flux axis current reference. However, there may be errors between the voltage reference and the actual voltage flowing into the motor. This causes an error in the current reference generation and reduces the efficiency of the inverter and motor due to the use of more current. In this paper, the problems that can occur due to voltage errors were analyzed through theoretical approaches and simulations, and improved voltage flux-weakening control to resolve these problems was presented. This method’s advantage is that the error between the voltage reference and the voltage applied to the motor can be minim... [more]

Thermal Performance of a Capacitive Comb-Drive MEMS Accelerometer: Measurements vs. Simulation
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: capacitive sensor, integrated readout circuit, MEMS accelerometer, temperature drift, thermal measurements
In this work, we analysed the difference between the measurement and simulation results of thermal drift of a custom designed capacitive MEMS accelerometer. It was manufactured in X-FAB XMB10 technology together with a dedicated readout circuit in X-FAB XP018 technology. It turned out that the temperature sensitivity of the sensor’s output is nonlinear and particularly strong in the negative Celsius temperature range. It was found that the temperature drift is mainly caused by the MEMS sensor and the influence of the readout circuit is minimal. Moreover, the measurements showed that this temperature dependence is the same regardless of applied acceleration. Simulation of the accelerometer’s model allowed us to estimate the contribution of post-manufacturing mismatch on the thermal drift; for our sensor, the mismatch-induced drift accounted for about 6% of total thermal drift. It is argued that the remaining 94% of the drift could be a result of the presence of residual stress in the st... [more]

Parameterized Trajectory Optimization and Tracking Control of High Altitude Parafoil Generation
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: extended state observer (ESO), nonlinear programming (NLP), pseudospectral method (PSM), trajectory optimization
Parafoil trajectory directly affects the power generation of a high-altitude wind power generation (HAWPG) device. Therefore, it is particularly important to optimize the parafoil trajectory and then to track it effectively. In this paper, the trajectory of the parafoil at high altitudes is optimized and tracked in a comprehensively parameterized manner. Both the complex dynamic characteristics of the parafoil and the dexterous demand of the high-altitude controller are considered. Firstly, the trajectory variables and control signals are parameterized as Lagrange polynomials in terms of the corresponding values at the selected nodes. Then, the Radau pseudospectral method (PSM) is employed to reformulate the original dynamic trajectory optimization problem into a static nonlinear programming (NLP) problem. By doing so, the parameterized optimal trajectory, which has the maximum net power generation, can be obtained. To attenuate the strong nonlinear, multivariable and coupling characte... [more]

A Compensated Peak Current Mode Control PWM for Primary-Side Controlled Flyback Converters
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: feedback compensator, feedforward compensator, flyback converter
In this paper, a feedback compensator (FBC) and a Feedforward compensator (FFC) are proposed to construct a novel compensated peak current mode control pulse width modulation (CPC-PWM) for primary-side controlled flyback converters. Using the proposed FBC, the PWM duty cycle of an abnormal operating flyback converter would be descended to limit the output current for reducing power dissipation. Using the proposed FFC, the effect of delay time would be descended to reduce the over-flow current for increasing the current accuracy. In this paper, the operating principle and mathematical model are described and analyzed. Then, the component values are well designed to satisfy the electrical specifications. Finally, a prototype is designed and realized to access system performance. The experimental results show that the proposed CPC-PWM can validate in a wide input voltage range and output short conditions, which also has good current accuracy and reduces power dissipation by about 68%.

A Robust Optimization Model to the Day-Ahead Operation of an Electric Vehicle Aggregator Providing Reliable Reserve
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: energy and reserve schedule, EV aggregator, non-anticipativity constraints, robust optimization
This paper presents a robust optimization model to find out the day-ahead energy and reserve to be scheduled by an electric vehicle (EV) aggregator. Energy can be purchased from, and injected to, the distribution network, while upward and downward reserves can be also provided by the EV aggregator. Although it is an economically driven model, the focus of this work relies on the actual availability of the scheduled reserves in a future real-time. To this end, two main features stand out: on one hand, the uncertainty regarding the EV driven pattern is modeled through a robust approach and, on the other hand, a set of non-anticipativity constraints are included to prevent from unavailable future states. The proposed model is posed as a mixed-integer robust linear problem in which binary variables are used to consider the charging, discharging or idle status of the EV aggregator. Results over a 24-h case study show the capability of the proposed model.

Development of a Fast Thermal Model for Calculating the Temperature of the Interior PMSM
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: conduction and convection, interior permanent magnet synchronous machine (IPMSM), lumped-parameter thermal network (LPTN)
A 40 kW−4000 rpm interior permanent magnet synchronous machine (IPMSM) applied to an electric vehicle (EV) is introduced as the study object in this paper. The main work of this paper is theoretical derivation and validation of the first-order and multi-order transient lumped-parameter thermal network (LPTN) for the development of a fast thermal model. Based on the first-order LPTN built, the study finds that the heat transfer coefficient of fluid and thickness of the air gap layer are the main influencing factors for the final temperature and time of reaching the steady state. The larger the heat transfer coefficient of fluid is, the lower the steady node temperature is. The smaller the air layer thickness is, the lower the steady node temperature is. The multi-order LPTN theory is further deduced based on the extension of the first-order LPTN. For the constant load and rectangular periodic load, transient node temperatures of the IPMSM are obtained by modeling and solving the first o... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: ANFIS, ANN, fuzzy, MPPT, photovoltaic systems, power recovery
Classic and intelligent techniques aim to locate and track the maximum power point of photovoltaic (PV) systems, such as perturb and observe (P&O), fuzzy logic (FL), artificial neural networks (ANNs), and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference systems (ANFISs). This paper proposes and compares three intelligent algorithms for maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control, specifically fuzzy, ANN, and ANFIS. The modeling of a single-diode equivalent circuit-based 3 kWp PV plant was developed and validated to achieve this purpose. Then, the MPPT techniques were designed and applied to control the buck−boost converter’s switching device of the PV plant. All three methods use the ambient conditions as input variables: solar irradiance and ambient temperature. The proposed methodology comprises the study of the dynamic response for tracking the maximum power point and the power generated of the PV systems, and it was compared to the classic P&O technique under varying ambient conditions. Bragg Mirrors for Thermal Waves
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: Bragg, Cattaneo-Vernotte, waves
We present a numerical calculation of the heat transport in a Bragg mirror configuration made of materials that do not obey Fourier’s law of heat conduction. The Bragg mirror is made of materials that are described by the Cattaneo-Vernotte equation. By analyzing the Cattaneo-Vernotte equation’s solutions, we define the thermal wave surface impedance to design highly reflective thermal Bragg mirrors. Even for mirrors with a few layers, very high reflectance is achieved (>90%). The Bragg mirror configuration is also a system that makes evident the wave-like nature of the solution of the Cattaneo-Vernotte equation by showing frequency pass-bands that are absent if the materials obey the usual Fourier’s law.

Conceptualizing Walking and Walkability in the Smart City through a Model Composite w2 Smart City Utility Index
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: model composite w2 smart city utility index, smart cities, utility, walkability, walking
This paper explores walking and walkability in the smart city and makes a case for their centrality in the debate on the resilience and sustainability of smart cities, as outlined in the United Nations’ (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It is argued that, while the human/inhabitant-centric paradigm of urban development consolidates, and research on walking, walkability, and pedestrian satisfaction flourishes, the inroads of ICT render it necessary to reflect on these issues in the conceptually- and geographically-delimited space of the smart city. More importantly, it becomes imperative to make respective findings useful and usable for policymakers. To this end, by approaching walking and walkability through the lens of utility, the objective of this paper is to develop a conceptual framework in which the relevance of walking and walkability, hereafter referred to as w2, as a distinct subject of research in the smart cities debate is validated. This framework is then employed... [more]

Subject: Process Design
Keywords: de-superheating, performance assessment, refrigeration, thermoelectric generators, vapor compression, waste heat recovery
This article reports on an experimental analysis and performance assessment of using thermoelectric generators (TEGs) for waste heat recovery from residential vapor compression refrigeration systems. The analysis shows that there is a good opportunity for waste heat recovery using TEGs by de-superheating refrigerant after the compressor. Design and manufacturing of a de-superheater unit consisting of a tube and plate heat exchanger and thermoelectric generator modules (HE-TEGs) have been performed and integrated in an experimental test rig of R134a refrigeration cycle. Experimental assessment of the performance parameters, as compared to the basic refrigeration system, reveals that the overall coefficient of performance (COP) using HE-TEGs desuperheater unit increases by values ranging from 17% to 32% depending on the condenser and evaporator loads. Exergy analysis shows that the enhancement is attributed to reduction in the exergy destruction in the condenser and compressor due to low... [more]

Evolution of Temperature Field around Underground Power Cable for Static and Cyclic Heating
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: convection in porous media, cyclic thermal loading, thermal conductivity, underground power cable, vadose zone heat transfer
Power transmission covering long-distances has shifted from overhead high voltage cables to underground power cable systems due to numerous failures under severe weather conditions and electromagnetic pollution. The underground power cable systems are limited by the melting point of the insulator around the conductor, which depends on the surrounding soils’ heat transfer capacity or the thermal conductivity. In the past, numerical and theoretical studies have been conducted based on the mechanistic heat and mass transfer model. However, limited experimental evidence has been provided. Therefore, in this study, we performed a series of experiments for static and cyclic thermal loads with a cylindrical heater embedded in the sand. The results suggest thermal charging of the surrounding dry sand and natural convection within the wet sand. A comparison of heat transfer for dry, unsaturated and fully saturated sand is presented with graphs and colour maps which provide valuable information... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: butenes, cracking furnace, Ethylene, olefin production, propylene, reaction parameters, steam cracking
Light olefins are the main building blocks used in the petrochemical and chemical industries for the production of different components such as polymers, synthetic fibers, rubbers, and plastic materials. Currently, steam cracking of hydrocarbons is the main technology for the production of light olefins. In steam cracking, the pyrolysis of feedstocks occurs in the cracking furnace, where hydrocarbon feed and steam are first mixed and preheated in the convection section and then enter the furnace radiation section to crack to the desired products. This paper summarizes olefin production via the steam cracking process; and the reaction mechanism and cracking furnace are also discussed. The effect of different operating parameters, including temperature, residence time, feedstock composition, and the steam-to-hydrocarbon ratio, are also reviewed.

Pumping Schedule Optimization in Acid Fracturing Treatment by Unified Fracture Design
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: acid fracturing, acid type, design parameters, fracture geometry, Optimization, unified fracture design
Acid fracturing simulation has been widely used to improve well performance in carbonate reservoirs. In this study, a computational method is presented to optimize acid fracturing treatments. First, fracture geometry parameters are calculated using unified fracture design methods. Then, the controllable design parameters are iterated till the fracture geometry parameters reach their optimal values. The results show higher flow rates are required to achieve optimal fracture geometry parameters with larger acid volumes. Detailed sensitivity analyses are performed on controllable and reservoir parameters. It shows that higher flow rates should be applied for fluids with lower viscosity. Straight acid reaches optimal conditions at higher flow rates and lower volumes. These conditions for retarded acids appear to be only at lower flow rates and higher volumes. The study of the acid concentration for gelled acids shows that both flow rate and volume increase as the concentration increases. F... [more]
