Diesel Engine Fault Diagnosis Method Based on Optimized VMD and Improved CNN
February 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: continuous wavelet transform, convolutional neural network, diesel engine fault diagnosis, support vector machine, variational mode decomposition
The safe operation of diesel engines performs a vital function in industrial production and life. Because diesel engines often work in harsh environmental conditions, they are prone to failure. Therefore, this paper proposes a fault analysis method based on a combination of optimized variational mode decomposition (VMD) and improved convolutional neural networks (CNN) to address the necessary need for preventive maintenance of diesel engines. The authentic vibration sign is first decomposed by using the (VMD) algorithm, then the greatest range of decomposition layers is decided by using scattering entropy and the useful components are preferentially chosen for reconstruction. The continuous wavelet transform (CWT) records preprocessing method is then delivered to radically change the noise-reduced vibration sign into a time-frequency map, which is fed into the CNN for model coaching and extraction of fault features. Finally, fault classification is realized by support vector machine (S... [more]

February 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: Modelling, monodisperse PEG, polyethylene glycol, reversed-phase chromatography, thermodynamic analysis
The separation of polyethylene glycols (PEGs) into single homologs by reversed-phase chromatography is investigated experimentally and theoretically. The used core−shell column is shown to achieve the baseline separation of PEG homologs up to molar weights of at least 5000 g/mol. A detailed study is performed elucidating the role of the operating conditions, including the temperature, eluent composition, and degree of polymerization of the polymer. Applying Martin’s rule yields a simple model for retention times that holds for a wide range of conditions. In combination with relations for column efficiency, the role of the operating conditions is discussed, and separations are predicted for analytical-scale chromatography. Finally, the approach is included in an efficient process model based on discrete convolution, which is demonstrated to predict with high accuracy also advanced operating modes with arbitrary injection profiles.

Effects of the Degree of Unsaturation of Fatty Acid Esters on Engine Performance and Emission Characteristics
February 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: allylic position equivalents, biodiesel, cetane number, engine performance, fuel structure
Biodiesel is considered an environmentally friendly alternative to petro-derived diesel. The cetane number indicates the degree of difficulty in the compression-ignition of liquid fuel-powered engines. The allylic position equivalent (APE), which represents the unsaturated degree of fatty acid esters, was one of the key parameters for the cetane number of biodiesel. Due to the significant attributes of APE for biodiesel properties, the impact of APE on engine performance and emission characteristics was investigated in this study. The engine characteristics could be improved by adjusting the biodiesel fuel structure accordingly. A four-stroke and four-cylinder diesel engine accompanied by an engine dynamometer and a gas analyzer were used to derive the optimum blending ratio of the two biodiesels from soybean oil and waste cooking oil. Three fuel samples composed of various proportions of those two biodiesels and ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) were prepared. The amounts of saturated fa... [more]

Impact of Subsidy Policy on Remanufacturing Industry’s Donation Strategy
February 17, 2023 (v2)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: donation strategy, prisoner’s dilemma, remanufacturing industry, subsidy policy
Motivated by the donation subsidy policy, this paper studies a supply chain consisting of a manufacturer and a remanufacturer. The manufacturer sells new and remanufactured products and can also donate two products. The remanufacturer can only sell and donate remanufactured products. Using the Stackelberg game model, we investigate the optimal production and donation strategies of two competing firms and discuss how the subsidy policy affects these strategies. Our main results include the following: First, the donation strategies of the two firms are not only affected by the subsidies but could also be influenced by the competitor’s donation decision, especially when the subsidy is high. Second, the subsidized products for sale in the market will decline as the subsidy increases. Therefore, a high subsidy always causes insufficient market supply. Third, the first-mover advantage may not make the manufacturer avoid a dilemma; however, when the remanufacturer becomes the leader in the ma... [more]

February 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: SCAPS-1D, thin-film solar cells, Zn1−xMgxO
Carbon nitride (C2N), a two-dimensional material, is rapidly gaining popularity in the photovoltaic (PV) research community owing to its excellent properties, such as high thermal and chemical stability, non-toxic composition, and low fabrication cost over other thin-film solar cells. This study uses a detailed numerical investigation to explore the influence of C2N-based solar cells with zinc magnesium oxide (Zn1−xMgxO) as a buffer layer. The SCAPS-1D simulator is utilized to examine the performance of four Mg-doped buffer layers (x = 0.0625, 0.125, 0.1875, and 0.25) coupled with the C2N-based absorber layer. The influence of the absorber and buffer layers’ band alignment, quantum efficiency, thickness, doping density, defect density, and operating temperature are analyzed to improve the cell performance. Based on the simulations, increasing the buffer layer Mg concentration above x = 0.1875 reduces the device performance. Furthermore, it is found that increasing the absorber layer th... [more]

Predefined-Time Fuzzy Neural Network Control for Omnidirectional Mobile Robot
February 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: fuzzy neural network, omnidirectional mobile robot, predefined-time stability, trajectory tracking
In this paper, a fuzzy neural network based predefined-time trajectory tracking control method is proposed for the tracking problem of omnidirectional mobile robots (FM-OMR) with uncertainties. Considering the requirement of tracking error convergence time, a position tracking controller based on predefined-time stability is proposed. Compared with the traditional position tracking control method, the minimum upper bound of the convergence time can be explicitly set. In order to obtain more accurate angular velocity tracking, the inner loop controller combines Type 1 fuzzy neural network (T1FNN) to estimate the uncertainty. In addition, considering the problem of feedback channel noise, a Kalman filter combining velocity and position information is proposed. Finally, the simulation results verify the effectiveness of this method.

ELISA Based Immunoreactivity Reduction of Soy Allergens through Thermal Processing
February 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: allergen, commercial, ELISA, FTIR, immunoreactivity, intense thermal, processing, quality, soybean
Allergens are proteins and are, therefore, likely to be denatured when subjected to thermal treatment. Traditional cooking has so far been able to reduce allergen sensitivity by around 70−90%. This study was aimed at evaluating the effect of a broad range of thermal treatments on the reduction of soy immunoreactivity (IR) in a 5% slurry using a sandwich ELISA technique. Cooking at 100 °C (10−60 min) and different thermal processing conditions, such as in commercial sterilization (with a process lethality (Fo) between 3 and 5 min) and selected severe thermal processing conditions (Fo > 5 and up to 23 min) were used in the study to evaluate their influence on allergen IR. Based on an IR comparison with an internal soy allergen standard, the allergen concentration in the untreated soy sample was calculated to be equivalent to 333 mg/kg (ppm). Cooking conditions only reduced the IR sensitivity to about 10 mg/kg (~1.5 log reductions), while the thermal processing treatments lowered the alle... [more]

Subject: Other
Keywords: fractal dimension, fractal theory, metamorphism, pore structure, pores characteristics
The adsorption pore structure is the key affecting the technology of enhanced coal bed methane recovery (ECBM). In this paper, nitrogen adsorption measurement (NAM) and low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) methods are used to test the structural parameters of adsorption pores of four coal samples with different metamorphic degrees. Combining with the fractal theory, the applicability and the physical significance of fractal dimensions obtained from different models are analyzed. Finally, the main factors affecting the complexity of the pore size structure and the influence of fractal characteristics on the adsorption properties of coal are discussed. The results show that with the increase in the degree of metamorphism, the ranking order of the volume and the specific surface area of adsorption pores of four coal samples are long flame coal > anthracite > gas coal > coking coal. Porous Defective Bi/Bi3NbO7 Nanosheets for Efficient Photocatalytic NO Removal under Visible Light
February 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: Bi3NbO7, defects, NO removal, photocatalysis, surface plasmon resonance
Since conventional techniques are ineffective for NO removal at low concentrations, photocatalysis has become attractive in this regard, recently. However, in practice, photocatalytic NO removal has drawbacks such as limited light absorption and the proclivity of producing toxic by-products. To address these issues, novel defective Bi/Bi3NbO7 structures with good porosity were fabricated by a solvothermal method and used for enhanced photocatalytic NO removal under visible light irradiation. The morphological and structural properties of the prepared materials were comprehensively analyzed. The optimal photocatalytic activity of pore-defective Bi/Bi3NbO7 for NO removal was 60.3%, when the molar ratios of urea and Bi(NO)3•5H2O to pristine Bi3NbO7 were 1:25 and 1:2, respectively, under the following operational conditions: NO concentration of 700 ppb, catalyst dosage of 50 mg and irradiation time of 14 min. Study on the Fracturing of Rock by High-Speed Water Jet Impact
February 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: confining pressure, crack propagation, high-speed water jet, jet flow angle
Due to the opaqueness of rock and the limitation of detection technology, it is impossible to accurately describe the crack growth process and determine the law of rock breakage. Based on smoothed particle hydrodynamics and the finite element method (SPH-FEM), a numerical model for high-speed water jet breaking was established in this work to simulate the fragmentation process of rock impacted by a high-speed water jet, and to study the effects of different jet angles on the propagation of microscopic cracks inside the rock. Additionally, we further analyzed the jet impact angle on the microscopic crack propagation trend of the rock by applying confining pressure to the rock. Theoretical and experimental analyses showed that the inclination angle of the jet determined the direction of axial crack propagation in the tension-type center. When the inclination angle of the jet exceeded 20°, the ability of water jet erosion was insufficient, and the efficiency of rock fragmentation was low.... [more]

Validation of Two Theoretically Derived Equations for Predicting pH in CO2 Biomethanisation
February 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: ammonia, CO2 biomethanisation, CO2 partial pressure, pH change, volatile fatty acids
CO2 biomethanisation is a rapidly emerging technology which can contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions through the more sustainable use of organic feedstocks. The major technical limitation for in situ systems is that the reaction causes CO2 depletion which drives up pH, potentially leading to instability and even digestion failure. The study aimed to test fundamentally derived predictive equations as tools to manage H2 addition to anaerobic digesters. The methodology used data from the literature and from experimental digesters operated with excess H2 to a point of failure and subsequent recovery. Two equations were tested: the first relating pH to CO2 partial pressure (pCO2), and the second extending this to include the influence of volatile fatty acids and ammonia. The first equation gave good agreement for data from studies covering a wide range of operating conditions and digester types. Where agreement was not good, this could usually be explained, and in some cases impr... [more]

February 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: chlorogenic acid, glycerol, honeysuckle, response surface methodology, ultrasonic assisted extraction
Using honeysuckle as raw material, chlorogenic acid (CGA) was extracted with different alcohols. Based on the single-factor experiment design, the relationship between each parameter and the response value was explored by Box−Behnken method to optimize the process conditions. Best extraction results were obtained under the conditions of solid-to-liquid ratio of 1:20, the ultrasonic time of 40 min, the ultrasonic vibrator power of 240 w, and the CGA extraction rate of 2.98%. The experimental data show that the extraction rate of CGA is related to the length of the alcohol carbon chain and the number of hydroxyl groups in the extractant. The results from this work can provide technical basis for the safe and efficient production of CGA from honeysuckle.

Subject: Materials
Keywords: Carbon Dioxide, ceria, oxygen diffusion, oxygen surface exchange, thermochemical cycling
The surface exchange and bulk transport of oxygen are highly relevant to ceria-based redox materials, which are envisaged for the solar thermochemical splitting of carbon dioxide in the future. Experimental investigations of oxygen isotope exchange on CeO2-δ, Ce0.9M3+0.1O1.95-δ (with M3+ = Y, Sm) and Ce0.9M4+0.1O2-δ (with M4+ = Zr) samples were carried out for the first time utilizing oxygen-isotope-enriched C18O2 gas atmospheres as the tracer source, followed by Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS), at the temperature range 300 ≤ T ≤ 800 °C. The experimental K˜O and D˜O data reveal promising results in terms of CO2 splitting when trivalent (especially Sm)-doped ceria is employed. The reaction temperatures are lower than previously proposed/reported due to the weak temperature dependency of the parameters K˜O and D˜O. The majority of isotope exchange experiments show higher values of K˜O and D˜O for Sm-doped cerium dioxide in comparison to Y-doped and Zr-doped ceria, as well as nomin... [more]

Keywords: deep foundation pit, noise reduction, RBF neural network, subsidence, wavelet
Predicting surface settlement in deep foundation pit engineering plays a central role in the safety of foundation pit construction. Recently, static or dynamic methods are usually applied to predict ground settlement in deep foundation pit projects. In this work, we propose a model combining wavelet noise reduction and radial basis neural network (XW-RBF) to reduce noise interference in monitoring data. The results show that the XW-RBF model predicts an average relative error of 0.77 and a root average square error of 0.13. The prediction performance is better than the original data prediction results with noise structure and has higher prediction accuracy. The noise data caused by the interference of construction and the surrounding environment in the original data can be removed via the wavelet noise reduction method, with the discreteness of the original data reducing by 30%. More importantly, our results show that the XW-RBF model can reflect the law of data change to predict the f... [more]
