A Hybrid Framework Combining Data-Driven and Catenary-Based Methods for Wide-Area Powerline Sag Estimation
Yunfa Wu, Bin Zhang, Anbo Meng, Yong-Hua Liu, Chun-Yi Su
April 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ensemble learning, hybrid model, sag estimation, spatial data
This paper is concerned with the airborne-laser-data-based sag estimation for wide-area transmission lines. A systematic data processing framework is established for multi-source data collected from power lines, which is applicable to various operating conditions. Subsequently, a k-means-based clustering approach is employed to handle the spatial heterogeneity and sparsity of powerline corridor data after comprehensive performance comparisons. Furthermore, a hybrid model of the catenary and XGBoost (HMCX) method is proposed for sag estimation, which improves the accuracy of sag estimation by integrating the adaptability of catenary and the sparsity awareness of XGBoost. Finally, the effectiveness of HMCX is verified by using power data from 116 actual lines.
High Step-Up Flyback with Low-Overshoot Voltage Stress on Secondary GaN Rectifier

April 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: flyback, gallium nitride, GaN, high gain converter, high step-up, leakage, rectifier, SiC, silicon carbide, voltage stress
This paper presents a new technique to mitigate the high voltage stress on the secondary gallium nitride (GaN) transistor in a high step-up flyback application. GaN devices provide a means of achieving high efficiency at hundreds (and thousands) of kHz of switching frequency. Presently however, commercially available GaN is limited to only a 650 V absolute voltage rating. Such a limitation is challenging in high step-up flyback applications due to the secondary leakage. The leakage imposes high voltage stress on the secondary GaN rectifier during its turn-off transient. Such stress may cause irreversible damage to the GaN device. A new method of leakage bypass is presented to mitigate the high voltage stress issue. The experimental results suggest that when compared to conventional secondary active clamp, a 2.3-fold reduction in overshoot voltage stress percentage is achievable with the technique. As a result, it is possible to utilize GaN as the rectifier while keeping the peak voltag... [more]

Ziheng Niu, Jianliang Xiong, Xuesong Ding, Yao Wu
April 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: carbon emission allowance trading, carbon peak, China, energy trading market
To solve the problem of rising energy use and CO2 emissions, China issued the 14th Five-Year Plan in 2020, emphasizing the need to reduce its carbon intensity and achieve a carbon emission peak before 2030. In order to estimate the future path of carbon peak in China, a novel dataset was constructed to analyze 30 provinces in China, and found that the realization of carbon peaking in 2025 requires a reduction of 1.072 million tons of carbon emissions in 2025, at which point peak carbon emissions will be 11,008.4 million tons. Due to this energy gap caused by carbon emission reduction the total amount of clean electricity has reached 3600 billion kWh. In carbon emission allowance trading, provinces with large carbon emissions, like Jiangsu and Guangdong, prefer to buy carbon allowances, while those with small carbon emissions like Shanxi and Inner Mongolia prefer to sell carbon allowances. In the energy trading market, the overall situation meets the 14th Five-Year Plan of west-east and... [more]

Subject: Other
Keywords: 5G, business architecture, business model, drone, network slicing, U-space, UAS, UAV, UTM
The services based on Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have started to be used in many countries but not on a large scale yet. The paper describes the present status of UAV services and a concept of a solution for large-scale deployment of safe and reliable UAV services that use the 5G network for communication with UAVs. Based on the Standards Developing Organizations and related industry fora activities, unmanned traffic and airspace regulations, especially the commonly supported concept of Unmanned Aircraft Systems Traffic Management (UTM), UAV-related communication requirements and 5G System (5GS) features, we have developed an alternative approach to the integration of UAV and 5GS. The proposed concept includes a set of enablers that can be provided by Mobile Network Operators in order to not only support but also leverage UAV services. As work on many items is still in progress, we identify a list of open issues and challenges and present them at the end of the paper with the main... [more]

A Cogging Torque Minimization Procedure for Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors Based on a Progressive Modification of the Rotor Lamination Geometry
Massimo Caruso, Antonino Oscar Di Tommaso, Rosario Miceli, Fabio Viola
April 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cogging torque, FEM analysis, harmonic analysis, interior permanent magnet synchronous motors, permanent magnets, rotor lamination
This article describes a simple cogging torque minimization procedure for interior permanent magnet synchronous machines (IPMSMs), consisting of a progressive modification of the rotor lamination geometry. This procedure can be generalized for the main topologies of PMSM, independently of the number of stator slots or the location of the permanent magnets. For this purpose, a basic IPMSM structure is analyzed by means of the FEM (finite element method) approach, and then, several other IPMSM geometries, obtained by adequately modifying the rotor lamination geometry of the basic IPMSM model without changing its stator configuration, are proposed and discussed. The trends of the cogging torque generated by each model are computed and compared. From this comparison, it is demonstrated that, by simply acting on the shape of the rotor lamination and by choosing the optimized pattern, the cogging torque components can be theoretically canceled.

Mariana Myriam Campos Fraga, Bruno Lacerda de Oliveira Campos, Handoyo Hendrawidjaja, Caroline Carriel Schmitt, Klaus Raffelt, Nicolaus Dahmen
April 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bio-refinery, fast pyrolysis oil, hydrodeoxygenation, niobia-supported catalysts
Due to the high acid, oxygen and water contents of fast pyrolysis oil, it requires the improvement of its fuel properties by further upgrading, such as catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO). In this study, Nb2O5 was evaluated as a support of Pd-based catalysts for HDO of fast pyrolysis oil. A Pd/SiO2 catalyst was used as a reference. Additionally, the impact of iron as a promoter in two different loadings was investigated. The activity of the synthesized catalysts was evaluated in terms of H2 uptake and composition of the upgraded products (gas phase, upgraded oil and aqueous phase) through elemental analysis, Karl Fischer titration, GC-MS/FID and 1H-NMR. In comparison to SiO2, due to its acid sites, Nb2O5 enhanced the catalyst activity towards hydrogenolysis and hydrogenation, confirmed by the increased water formation during HDO and a higher content of hydrogen and aliphatic protons in the upgraded oil. Consequently, the upgraded oil with Nb2O5 had a lower average molecular weight and w... [more]
DNS Study of Spherically Expanding Premixed Turbulent Ammonia-Hydrogen Flame Kernels, Effect of Equivalence Ratio and Hydrogen Content
Nithin Mukundakumar, Rob Bastiaans
April 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ammonia, combustion, diffusion
In this study, 3D premixed turbulent ammonia-hydrogen flames in air were studied using DNS. Mixtures with 75%, 50% and 25% ammonia (by mole fraction in the fuel mixture) and equivalence ratios of 0.8, 1.0 and 1.2 were studied. The studies were conducted in a decaying turbulence field with an initial Karlovitz number of 10. The flame structure and the influence of ammonia and the equivalence ratio were first studied. It was observed that the increase in equivalence ratio smoothened out the small scale wrinkles while leading to strongly curved leading edges. Increasing the amount of hydrogen in the fuel mixtures also led to increasingly distorted flames. These effects are attributed to local increases in the equivalence ratio due to the preferential diffusion effects of hydrogen. The effects of curvature on the flame chemistry were studied by looking at fuel consumption rates and key reactions. It was observed that the highly mobile H2 and H species were responsible for differential rate... [more]

Keywords: activated carbon pellets, catalyst bed reactor, chemical activation, liquid hydrocarbons, residual fat, thermal catalytic cracking
This work investigated the influence of the reaction time and catalyst-to-residual fat ratio by catalytic upgrading from pyrolysis vapors of residual fat at 400 °C and 1.0 atmosphere, on the yields of reaction products, physicochemical properties (density, kinematic viscosity, and acid value) and chemical composition of bio-oils, over a catalyst fixed-bed reactor of activated carbon pellets impregnated with 10.0 M NaOH, in semi-pilot scale. The experiments were carried out at 400 °C and 1.0 atmosphere, using a process schema consisting of a thermal cracking reactor of 2.0 L coupled to a catalyst fixed-bed reactor of 53 mL, without catalyst and using 5.0%, 7.5%, and 10.0% (wt.) activated carbon pellets impregnated with 10.0 M NaOH, in batch mode. Results show yields of bio-oil decreasing with increasing catalyst-to-tallow ratio. The GC-MS of liquid reaction products identified the presence of hydrocarbons (alkanes, alkenes, ring-containing alkanes, ring-containing alkenes, and aromatics... [more]
COVID-19 Effects on Arbitrage Trading in the Energy Market
Li Chen, Guang Zhang
April 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: COVID-19, pairs trading, U.S. energy market
This paper investigates the effects of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on the performance of arbitrage trading in the energy market using daily data covering the period between 1 January 2015 and 5 December 2021. The investigation was achieved by utilizing a parametric pairs-trading model, where pairs of energy-related securities, including futures, stocks and ETFs traded in the United States, are formed. The empirical results suggest that the out-of-sample performances of pair trading declined sharply in the face of COVID-19. Dividing the whole data sample into two sub-samples, we found that the strategy performed well before COVID-19 but yielded poor results in the pandemic era. The analysis presented in this paper could serve as a benchmark for arbitrage-based trading models in the energy market during the pandemic.

April 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: carriage, contact wire, current, electric locomotive, electric traction, electromagnetic field strength, inter-substation zone, power losses, rails, train
This article presents a new method for the estimation of active power losses based on a “field” approach, i.e., on the theory of the electromagnetic field and the theory of propagation of electromagnetic waves in a dielectric medium. Electromagnetic waves are assumed to transmit energy from the traction substation to electric rolling stock through the airspace of the inter-substation zone (i.e., not through the wires of the traction network) and meet electrically conductive surfaces on their way. The waves are partially reflected from the surfaces and partially penetrate them, thus creating thermal losses, the determination of which is the main task of this article. The analytical expressions for specific losses of active power are obtained by solving the system of Maxwell’s equations. Calculations of specific power losses in the catenary, rails, roofs, and bottoms of carriages and electric locomotives are performed. Power losses in carriages and electric locomotives are found to be at... [more]
Community Flexible Load Dispatching Model Based on Herd Mentality
Qi Huang, Aihua Jiang, Yu Zeng, Jianan Xu
April 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: demand response, flexible load, herd mentality, social welfare function, user psychology
In the context of smart electricity consumption, demand response is an important way to solve the problem of power supply and demand balance. Users participate in grid dispatching to obtain additional benefits, which realises a win-win situation between the grid and users. However, in actual dispatching, community users’ strong willingness to use energy leads to low enthusiasm of users to participate in demand response. Psychological research shows a direct connection between users’ herd mentality (HM) and their decision-making behavior. An optimal dispatching strategy based on user herd mentality is proposed to give full play to the active response-ability of community flexible load to participate in power grid dispatching. Considering that herd mentality is generated by the information interaction between users, by calling on some users to share the experience of successfully participating in demand response in the community information center and using the Nash social welfare functi... April 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: denitration, kinetics, sintered ore catalysts, sulfate-acid modified
Utilizing sintered ore catalysts (SOC), which are used in the sintering industry for NH3-SCR denitration, is a feasible and economical way to reduce NOx emission in sintering flue gas. Therefore, in order to enhance the denitration efficiency of SOC, sintered ore modified by sulfuric acid and sulfated sintered ore catalysts (SSOC-5) were prepared. Kinetic analyses of these two catalysts for denitration were carried out in this study. On the basis of eliminating the influence of internal and external diffusion, the relationship between reactants and reaction rate was studied by a power function kinetic model. This clarified that the adsorption ability of the acid-modified catalyst for reaction gas adsorption was stronger than that of sintered ore catalysts, and the reaction rate was also accelerated. The NO, NH3 and O2 reaction orders of SOC were 1, 0.3 and 0.16 at 250~300 °C, while these values of SSOC-5 were 0.8, 0.06 and 0.09, respectively. The apparent activation energy of SOC was 8... [more]

April 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: compression ratio, exhaust gas recirculation, ignition delay time, methane, n-heptane
This study analyzed factors that influence the ignition delay characteristics of n-heptane/methane-blended fuel. The effects of chemical species, exhaust gas recirculation rate, compression ratio, cool/hot flames, and combustion chamber conditions (temperature, pressure, and O2 concentration) were determined and analyzed using CHEMKIN Pro. The experiment conditions for verification were 550−1000 K at 15 bar with 50% H2/50% CH4 fuel. The main combustion reactions were confirmed through reactivity analysis and sensitivity analysis on the ignition delay time. The ignition delay time at 14.7% O2 concentration was significantly higher than that at 21% O2 concentration by more than 30%. In addition, a higher ratio of methane in the blended fuel increased the ignition delay time as a result of methane dehydrogenation, delaying the ignition of heptane.

April 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: common-mode components, indirect matrix converter (IMC), spectrum analysis, triple Fourier series, voltage transfer ratio (VTR)
A variety of modulation strategies for suppressing output common-mode voltage (CMV) of indirect matrix converters (IMC) have been proposed, but most of them mainly reduce the peak of CMV by 42.3%. The frequency-domain characteristics of CMV have not been deeply analyzed. In order to improve the theory of frequency-domain characteristics of output common-mode voltage of IMC, this paper proposed a common-mode frequency domain analysis of five common-mode voltage peak suppression modulation methods for IMC. The common-mode voltage spectrum corresponding to the five modulation methods is obtained by the triple Fourier series, and the variation laws of the output common-mode components of the five modulation methods under different modulation indexes are compared and analyzed. By comparing and analyzing the low-frequency amplitude characteristics and high-frequency amplitude characteristics of five modulation methods, the suppression performance of the five modulation methods is evaluated.... Keywords: deformation characteristics of porous media, fractal, fractional step mothed, heterogeneous structure of the fracture network, infinite and finite conductivity, productivity model, staged fractured horizontal wells, tight oil reservoirs
The existing productivity models of staged fractured horizontal wells in tight oil reservoir are mainly linear flow models based on the idealized dual-medium fracture network structure, which have a certain limitation when applied to the production prediction. Aiming at the difficulty in describing the shape of the complex fractal fracture network, a two-dimensional heterogeneous structure model of the fracture network is proposed in this paper. Considering the deformation characteristics of porous media and the characteristic of non-Darcy fluid flow, a three-zone steady-state productivity model with the combination of radial and linear flow is established. To eliminate strong nonlinear characteristics of the mathematical model, a fractional step method is employed to deduce the production formulas of staged fractured horizontal wells under infinite and finite conductivity fractures. The established productivity model is verified with the actual data of three horizontal wells in differ... [more]

April 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: adiabatic cooling, cooling energy, cooling pad technology, direct evaporative cooling, Energy Efficiency
As the cooling requirement and the energy prices are increasing rapidly across the world, the need to develop highly efficient cooling equipment is rising as well. Adiabatic cooling employs evaporation to pre-cool the air flowing through a closed-loop coil. This study examines various adiabatic evaporative cooling pads in terms of their pre-cooling potential and advantages over currently available technological solutions through isolating three cross-sectional metal cooling pad shapes (W, Z and Z1). The results of the study suggest that the correlation between Δt↓ and RH↑ is somewhat close in all three cases; however, a slightly higher temperature drop is observed when using a W-shaped metal sheet. Pressure drop variability was negligible under current cooling pad configurations and experimental boundary conditions. Further studies focusing on measurement continuity, longevity and boundary conditions’ variability are recommended.
Deep-Learning-Based Adaptive Model for Solar Forecasting Using Clustering

April 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: clearness index forecasting, cloud cover, clustering, DTW
Accurate short-term solar forecasting is challenging due to weather uncertainties associated with cloud movements. Typically, a solar station comprises a single prediction model irrespective of time and cloud condition, which often results in suboptimal performance. In the proposed model, different categories of cloud movement are discovered using K-medoid clustering. To ensure broader variation in cloud movements, neighboring stations were also used that were selected using a dynamic time warping (DTW)-based similarity score. Next, cluster-specific models were constructed. At the prediction time, the current weather condition is first matched with the different weather groups found through clustering, and a cluster-specific model is subsequently chosen. As a result, multiple models are dynamically used for a particular day and solar station, which improves performance over a single site-specific model. The proposed model achieved 19.74% and 59% less normalized root mean square error (... [more]
Study of Pressure Retarded Osmosis Process in Hollow Fiber Membrane: Cylindrical Model for Description of Energy Production
Endre Nagy, Ibrar Ibrar, Ali Braytee, Béla Iván
April 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: blue energy, cylindrical model, hollow fiber membrane, mass transport, power density, pressure retarded osmosis, water flux
A new mathematical model was developed to predict the cylindrical effect of the membrane performance in the pressure retarded osmosis process. The cylindrical membrane transport layers (the draw side boundary and the porous membrane) were divided into very thin sublayers with constant mass transport parameters, among others with a constant radius in every sublayer. The obtained second-order differential mass balance equations were solved analytically, with constant parameters written for every sublayer. The algebraic equation system involving 2N equations was then solved for the determinant solution. It was shown that the membrane properties, water permeability (A), salt permeability (B), structural parameter (S) and the operating conditions (inlet draw side solute concentration and draw side mass transfer coefficient) affect the water flux strongly, and thus the membrane performance, due to the cylindrical effect caused by the variable surface and volume of the sublayers. This effect... [more]

April 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy auctions, energy forecast, energy management systems, energy sharing, peer-to-peer energy transactions
The use of energy sharing models in smart grids has been widely addressed in the literature. However, feasible technical solutions that can deploy these models into reality, as well as the correct use of energy forecasts are not properly addressed. This paper proposes a simple, yet viable and feasible, solution to deploy energy management systems on the end-user-side in order to enable not only energy forecasting but also a distributed discriminatory-price auction peer-to-peer energy transaction market. This work also analyses the impact of four energy forecasting models on energy transactions: a mathematical model, a support-vector machine model, an eXtreme Gradient Boosting model, and a TabNet model. To test the proposed solution and models, the system was deployed in five small offices and three residential households, achieving a maximum of energy costs reduction of 10.89% within the community, ranging from 0.24% to 57.43% for each individual agent. The results demonstrated the pot... [more]
Revisiting the Corresponding-States-Based Correlation for Pool Boiling Critical Heat Flux

April 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CHF prediction, correlation, corresponding states principle, critical heat flux, Pitzer acentric factor, pool boiling
A corresponding-states correlation for predicting the critical heat flux (CHF) in pool boiling conditions is proposed, and only requires knowledge of physical property constants of the fluid at any fluid temperature: molar mass, critical temperature, critical pressure, and the Pitzer acentric factor. If a fourth corresponding equation of state (EoS) parameter is added, a more accurate CHF correlation is obtained and matches Kutateladze−Zuber prediction within ±10% in the reduced temperature range of 0.55−0.95. This way, CHF can be easily predicted for any reduced temperature within the range of correlation’s validity by only knowing basic properties of the fluid. Additionally, two corresponding-states correlations for determining the capillary length are proposed and also do not rely on any temperature- and pressure-dependent fluid properties. A simpler correlation only using the Pitzer acentric factor is shown to be imprecise, and a more complex correlation also accounting for the fou... [more]

Keywords: diagnostic criteria, diagnostic sensitivity, furnace transformer, fuzzy logic, monitoring, technical condition
Implementation of the smart transformer concept is critical for the deployment of IIoT-based smart grids. Top manufacturers of power electrics develop and adopt online monitoring systems. Such systems become part of high-voltage grid and unit transformers. However, furnace transformers are a broad category that this change does not affect yet. At the same time, adoption of diagnostic systems for furnace transformers is relevant because they are a heavy-duty application with no redundancy. Creating any such system requires a well-founded mathematical analysis of the facility’s condition, carefully selected diagnostic parameters, and setpoints thereof, which serve as the condition categories. The goal hereof was to create an expert system to detect insulation breach and its expansion as well as to evaluate the risk it poses to the system; the core mechanism is mathematical processing of trends in partial discharge (PD). We ran tests on a 26-MVA transformer installed on a ladle furnace at... [more]

Keywords: induced seismicity monitoring, microearthquake detection, seismic arrays, sensor network technology
Seismic monitoring in areas where induced earthquakes could occur is a challenging topic for seismologists due to the generally very low signal to noise ratio. Therefore, the seismological community is devoting several efforts to the development of high-quality networks around the areas where fluid injection and storage and geothermal activities take place, also following the national induced seismicity monitoring guidelines. The use of advanced data mining strategies, such as template matching filters, auto-similarity search, and deep-learning approaches, has recently further fostered such monitoring, enhancing the seismic catalogs and lowering the magnitude of completeness of these areas. In this framework, we carried out an experiment where a small-aperture seismic array was installed within the dense seismic network used for monitoring the gas reservoir of Collalto, in North Italy. The continuous velocimetric data, acquired for 25 days, were analysed through the application of the... [more]

Keywords: mixture of fluids, organic Rankine cycles (ORC), siloxanes, thermal stability
Organic Rankine cycles are often the best solution for the conversion of thermal energy. The many working fluids include silicon oils. One crucial issue that determines the choice of a working fluid is its thermochemical stability, as this sets a limit to the maximum temperature at which the fluid can be used in a power plant. A second subject, much debated today, is the use of mixtures in ORCs. In the first part of this study, an investigation into the thermal stability of siloxanes using two different approaches was carried out. The results confirmed a limit working temperature for the considered siloxanes of about 300 °C, with a degradation that advanced significantly over time at 350 °C. In the second part of the study, an analysis of the thermodynamic performances of some siloxane mixtures was carried out. It was found that the efficiencies of the corresponding thermodynamic cycles were substantially the same as for the pure fluids used today. By changing the composition of the mi... [more]

Keywords: deposits, geothermal, Water
In Poland, there are low-temperature geothermal reservoirs that can be used for various purposes in many regions of the country. Low-temperature deposits of geothermal waters are common and occur much more frequently than high-temperature deposits. They contain water with temperatures lower than 150 °C. Their temperature normally ranges from 20 to 90 °C. Achieving a state of equilibrium depends on many factors, including the kinetics of reactions between the individual components of the system, temperature, reactivity of reservoir rock, concentration of chemical components in the water and the time the water remains in contact with the rock. Therefore, this article presents the possibility of checking the conditions of precipitation of inorganic sediments in geothermal waters with the use of PVT equipment. Tests were carried out with the use of geothermal waters under given dynamic conditions (pressure, temperature and flow). This paper confirms the suitability of using the equipment f... [more]
