Control Comparison for the Coordinate Transformation of an Asymmetric Dual Three Phase Synchronous Motor in Healthy and Single-Phase Open Fault States
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: asymmetric dual three phase synchronous motor, double dq transform, magneto motive force, vector space decomposition.
The coordinate transformation method of asymmetric dual three phase synchronous motor (ADTP-SM) is a Double dq transform using two dq-axes and a vector space decomposition (VSD) model method using the orthogonality of ADTP-SM. There are several studies comparing the two methods in a healthy state, but few in a single-phase open fault state. In the healthy, when the VSD model is applied, different harmonic orders of the phase current are projected onto the dq and xy-axes (the axis for controlling harmonics of the phase current), and the two-axes are orthogonal, so it can be controlled stably. In the single-phase open fault state, the same current control logic as in the healthy situation is applied. When applying the Double dq transform, the dq-axis of the fault set fluctuates, and it affects the healthy set, so it cannot be controlled stably. When applying the VSD model, if both the dq-axis and the xy-axis are controlled, the two coordinate systems do not have orthogonality and cannot... [more]

Predicting the Performance of Undeveloped Multi-Fractured Marcellus Gas Wells Using an Analytical Flow-Cell Model (FCM)
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: flow-cell model, physics-based DCA, proved undeveloped gas reserves.
The objective of the present study is to predict how changes in the fracture treatment design parameters will affect the production performance of new gas wells in a target zone of the Marcellus shale. A recently developed analytical flow-cell model can estimate future production for new wells with different completion designs. The flow-cell model predictions were benchmarked using historic data of 11 wells and 6 different completion designs. First, a type well was generated and used with the flow-cell model to predict the performance of the later infill wells—with variable completion designs—based off the performance of earlier wells. The flow-cell model takes into account known hyperbolic forecast parameters (qi, Di, and b-factor) and fracture parameters (height, half-length, and spacing) of a type well. Next, the flow-cell model generates the hyperbolic decline parameters for an offset well based on the selected changes in the fracture treatment design parameters. Using a numerical... [more]

Experimental Study on the Performance of a Novel Compact Electrostatic Coalescer with Helical Electrodes
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: compact separator, electrocoalescence, electrode design, oil–water separation, water-in-oil emulsion.
As most of the light and easy oil fields have been produced or are nearing their end-life, the emulsion stability is enhanced and water cut is increasing in produced fluid which have brought challenges to oil−water separation in onshore and offshore production trains. The conventional solution to these challenges includes a combination of higher chemical dosages, larger vessels and more separation stages, which often demands increased energy consumption, higher operating costs and larger space for the production facility. It is not always feasible to address the issues by conventional means, especially for the separation process on offshore platforms. Electrostatic coalescence is an effective method to achieve demulsification and accelerate the oil−water separation process. In this paper, a novel compact electrostatic coalescer with helical electrodes was developed and its performance on treatment of water-in-oil emulsions was investigated by experiments. Focused beam reflectance measu... [more]

The Degradation Behavior of LiFePO4/C Batteries during Long-Term Calendar Aging
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: capacity fade, internal resistance increase, lifetime modeling, lithium-ion battery, long-term calendar aging, nonlinear regression.
With widespread applications for lithium-ion batteries in energy storage systems, the performance degradation of the battery attracts more and more attention. Understanding the battery’s long-term aging characteristics is essential for the extension of the service lifetime of the battery and the safe operation of the system. In this paper, lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries were subjected to long-term (i.e., 27−43 months) calendar aging under consideration of three stress factors (i.e., time, temperature and state-of-charge (SOC) level) impact. By means of capacity measurements and resistance calculation, the battery’s long-term degradation behaviors were tracked over time. Battery aging models were established by a simple but accurate two-step nonlinear regression approach. Based on the established model, the effect of the aging temperature and SOC level on the long-term capacity fade and internal resistance increase of the battery is analyzed. Furthermore, the storage life of... [more]

Passive Model Predictive Control on a Two-Body Self-Referenced Point Absorber Wave Energy Converter
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Model Predictive Control, passive control, two-body point absorber, wave energy converter.
Wave energy is nowadays one of the most promising renewable energy sources; however, wave energy technology has not reached the fully-commercial stage, yet. One key aspect to achieve this goal is to identify an effective control strategy for each selected Wave Energy Converter (WEC), in order to extract the maximum energy from the waves, while respecting the physical constraints of the device. Model Predictive Control (MPC) can inherently satisfy these requirements. Generally, MPC is formulated as a quadratic programming problem with linear constraints (e.g., on position, speed and Power Take-Off (PTO) force). Since, in the most general case, this control technique requires bidirectional power flow between the PTO system and the grid, it has similar characteristics as reactive control. This means that, under some operating conditions, the energy losses may be equivalent, or even larger, than the energy yielded. As many WECs are designed to only allow unidirectional power flow, it is ne... [more]

Impact of the Reduction of Diesel Fuel Subsidy in the Design of an Off-Grid Hybrid Power System: A Case Study of the Bellavista Community in Ecuador
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: autonomous hybrid system, BESS, CO2 emissions, diesel generator, solar power system.
This paper presents a technical, economic, and environmental analysis and optimization of the impact of the reduction of diesel fuel subsidy in the design of an off-grid hybrid power system (OHPS). The OHPS includes a diesel generator, battery energy storage system (BESS), and a solar power system (SPS). This impact will focus on the electricity production levels of each of the OHPS components according to the increase of the fuel price and the SPS size. The Bellavista community in Ecuador was selected as the case study for this work. In this South American country, the government has begun a gradual increase in the diesel fuel price until it reaches international prices. Fifteen scenarios of OHPSs were simulated, in Homer Pro software, considering three SPS sizes and varying the diesel fuel price in five values. The annual load profile for the simulations was built based on the information of a previous study in this community. The results showed that for lower fuel prices (USD$0.26/L... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: char conversion, coal gasification, Computational Fluid Dynamics, entrained-flow reactor.
Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling of an entrained-flow reactor is demonstrated and compared with experimental data. The study is focused on char conversion modeling and its impact on gasification simulation results. An innovative procedure of optimizing input data to empirical char conversion kinetic-diffusion model is investigated, based on the complex carbon burnout kinetic model for oxidation (CBK/E) and gasification (CBK/G). The kinetics of the CBK/G model is determined using the data from char gasification experiments in a drop tube reactor. CFD simulations are performed for the laboratory-scale entrained-flow reactor at Brigham Young University for the bituminous coal. A substantial impact of applied kinetic parameters on the in-reactor gas composition and char conversion factor was observed. The effect was most considerable for the reduction zone, where gasification reactions dominate, although a non-negligible impact could also be observed in the flame zone. Based on... [more]

Wind Turbine Fault Detection Using Highly Imbalanced Real SCADA Data
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: Fault Detection, imbalanced data, k nearest neighbors, Machine Learning, principal component analysis, SCADA, structural health monitoring, support vector machines, wind turbine.
Wind power is cleaner and less expensive compared to other alternative sources, and it has therefore become one of the most important energy sources worldwide. However, challenges related to the operation and maintenance of wind farms significantly contribute to the increase in their overall costs, and, therefore, it is necessary to monitor the condition of each wind turbine on the farm and identify the different states of alarm. Common alarms are raised based on data acquired by a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system; however, this system generates a large number of false positive alerts, which must be handled to minimize inspection costs and perform preventive maintenance before actual critical or catastrophic failures occur. To this end, a fault detection methodology is proposed in this paper; in the proposed method, different data analysis and data processing techniques are applied to real SCADA data (imbalanced data) for improving the detection of alarms related... Multiple-Vector Model Predictive Control with Fuzzy Logic for PMSM Electric Drive Systems
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: deadbeat function, fuzzy logic controller, Model Predictive Control, multiple-vector.
This article presents a multiple-vector finite-control-set model predictive control (MV-FCS-MPC) scheme with fuzzy logic for permanent-magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) used in electric drive systems. The proposed technique is based on discrete space vector modulation (DSVM). The converter’s real voltage vectors are utilized along with new virtual voltage vectors to form switching sequences for each sampling period in order to improve the steady-state performance. Furthermore, to obtain the reference voltage vector (VV) directly from the reference current and to reduce the calculation load of the proposed MV-FCS-MPC technique, a deadbeat function (DB) is added. Subsequently, the best real or virtual voltage vector to be applied in the next sampling instant is selected based on a certain cost function. Moreover, a fuzzy logic controller is employed in the outer loop for controlling the speed of the rotor. Accordingly, the dynamic response of the speed is improved and the difficulty of t... [more]

Generation of Alternative Battery Allocation Proposals in Distribution Systems by the Optimization of Different Economic Metrics within a Mathematical Model
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery allocation, battery operation, distribution systems, economic and technical analysis.
Battery systems bring technical and economic advantages to electrical distribution systems (EDSs), as they conveniently store the surplus of cheap renewable generation for use at a more convenient time and contribute to peak shaving. Due to the high cost of batteries, technical and economic studies are needed to evaluate their correct allocation within the EDS. To contribute to this analysis, this paper proposes a stochastic mathematical model for the optimal battery allocation (OBA), which can be guided by the optimization of two different economic metrics: net present value (NPV) and internal rate of return (IRR). The effects of the OBA in the EDS are evaluated considering the stochastic variation of photovoltaic generation and load. Tests with the 33-node IEEE test system indicate that OBA results in voltage profile improvement (~1% at peak time), peak reduction (31.17%), increased photovoltaic hosting capacity (18.8%), and cost reduction (3.06%). Furthermore, it was found that the... [more]

Numerical Simulation of Acoustic Resonance Enhancement for Mean Flow Wind Energy Harvester as Well as Suppression for Pipeline
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: acoustic resonance, closed side branch, DDES, wind energy harvester.
Acoustic resonance in closed side branches should be enhanced to improve the efficiency of wind energy harvesting equipment or thermo-acoustic engine. However, in gas pipeline transportation systems, this kind of acoustic resonance should be suppressed to avoid fatigue damage to the pipeline. Realizable k-ε delayed detached eddy simulations (DDES) were conducted to study the effect of different branch pipe shapes on acoustic resonance. At some flow velocities, the pressure amplitude of the simulation results is twice as large as that of the experimental results, but the simulation can accurately capture the flow velocity range where acoustic resonance occurs. The results prove the feasibility of the method of the equivalent diameter of the circular cross-section pipe and the square cross-section pipe to predict acoustic resonance. The pressure pulsation amplitude of acoustic resonance in a square cross-section pipe is significantly increased than that in a circular square cross-section... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: demand response, forecasting, Optimization, prosumer, smart home.
This work presents an optimization framework based on mixed-integer programming techniques for a smart home’s optimal energy management. In particular, through a cost-minimization objective function, the developed approach determines the optimal day-ahead energy scheduling of all load types that can be either inelastic or can take part in demand response programs and the charging/discharging programs of an electric vehicle and energy storage. The underlying energy system can also interact with the power grid, exchanging electricity through sales and purchases. The smart home’s energy system also incorporates renewable energy sources in the form of wind and solar power, which generate electrical energy that can be either directly consumed for the home’s requirements, directed to the batteries for charging needs (storage, electric vehicles), or sold back to the power grid for acquiring revenues. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: bacterial foraging optimization (BFO), battery energy storage, diesel generator, power management, power quality, predictive control, renewable energy sources, standalone microgrid.
In this paper, the predictive-based control with bacterial foraging optimization technique for power management in a standalone microgrid is studied and implemented. The heuristic optimization method based on the social foraging behavior of Escherichia coli bacteria is employed to determine the power references from the non-renewable energy sources and loads of the proposed configuration, which consists of a fixed speed diesel generator and battery storage system (BES). The two-stage configuration is controlled to maintain the DC-link voltage constant, regulate the AC voltage and frequency, and improve the power quality, simultaneously. For these tasks, on the AC side, the obtained power references are used as input signals to the predictive-based control. With the help of the system parameters, the predictive-based control computes all possible states of the system on the next sampling time and compares them with the estimated power references obtained using the bacterial foraging opt... The Impact of Occupancy-Driven Models on Cooling Systems in Commercial Buildings
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: cooling systems, Energy Efficiency, Monte-Carlo simulation, non-linear optimization, occupancy, smart control.
Cooling systems play a key role in maintaining human comfort inside buildings. The key challenges that are facing conventional cooling systems are the rapid growth of total cooling energy and annual electricity consumption in commercial buildings. This is even more significant in countries with an arid climate, where the cooling systems are typically working 80% of the year. Thus, there has been growing interest in developing smart control models to assign optimal cooling setpoints in recent years. In the present work, we propose an occupancy-based control model that is based on a non-linear optimization algorithm to efficiently reduce energy consumption and costs. The model utilizes a Monte-Carlo method to determine the approximate occupancy schedule for building thermal zones. We compare our proposed model to three different strategies, namely: always-on thermostat, schedule-based model, and a rule-based occupancy-driven model. Unlike these three rule-based algorithms, the proposed o... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: alternative biofuels, bioeconomics, Biomass, combustion, pellets, solid recovered fuel.
This paper deals with the state and perspectives of bioenergy development in the context of exploiting the potential of available natural resources. We analyse the economic benefits of transitioning to alternative biofuel within the research task in cooperation with the Vojany black coal power plant. The assumption of fuel efficiency was confirmed by testing fuel combustion combinations directly in the power plant. The transition to 100% combustion of solid recovered fuel creates the potential for sustainable production of the analysed power plant and compliance with the current emission values of basic pollutants and new stricter limits, which will be binding in the EU from August 2021. The proposed solutions were analysed by Monte Carlo simulation. An estimate of the economic results achieved by the power... [more]

An Enhanced Emulated Inertia Control for Grid-Connected PV Systems with HESS in a Weak Grid
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery, frequency control, grid-connected PV, hybrid energy storage systems, inertia emulation, super-capacitor.
The role of renewable energy sources in the power grid is increasing tremendously. However, power electronic converters are used to incorporate RES into the grid without inertia. This article recommends an improved emulated inertia control approach focused on the frequency deviation and rate of change of frequency to enhance the inertia of a power system. The required inertial power calculated from emulated inertia control is delivered through hybrid energy storage systems equipped with a proper hybrid energy storage system control. The fast-varying power calculated from emulated inertia control is linked to super-capacitor. Simultaneously, the battery handles the slow varying power by regulating the DC bus voltage proportionate to the frequency variations. Further, the stability of the emulated inertia control and hybrid energy storage system controller is validated by Bode plots. The simulation results verified the correctness of the proposed emulated inertia control and hybrid energ... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: boundary element method, Computational Fluid Dynamics, experimental measurements, numerical modeling, Simulation, Wave Energy.
This paper reports on an ongoing international effort to establish guidelines for numerical modeling of wave energy converters, initiated by the International Energy Agency Technology Collaboration Program for Ocean Energy Systems. Initial results for point absorbers were presented in previous work, and here we present results for a breakwater-mounted Oscillating Water Column (OWC) device. The power-extracting air turbine is modeled by an orifice plate of 1−2% of the internal chamber surface area. Measurements of chamber surface elevation, air flow through the orifice, and pressure difference across the orifice are compared with numerical calculations using both weakly-nonlinear potential flow theory and computational fluid dynamics. Both compressible- and incompressible-flow models are considered, and the effects of air compressibility are found to have a significant influence on t... [more]

Application of Molecular Sieves for Drying Transformers Insulated with Mineral Oil, Natural Ester, or Synthetic Ester
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: drying, mineral oil, moisture, molecular sieves, natural ester, oil-paper insulation, synthetic ester, transformer.
A high level of moisture in the insulation system of power transformers is often the cause of their failure. This can be prevented by drying a transformer in its place of installation. In the article the application of molecular sieves (MS) in the drying process of the transformer insulation system was analyzed. The water sorption isotherms of 3A MS in mineral oil, natural ester, and synthetic ester at 35 °C were determined, which was not described in the literature before. An evaluation of the influence of temperature on the drying dynamics of electro-insulating liquids using MS was also carried out. The drying dynamics were tested at three temperatures, i.e., 35 °C, 50 °C, and 65 °C, which allowed to analyze the effect of temperature on a short-term or continuous drying process. The tests showed that 3A MS’s ability to adsorb water varied depending on the type of electro-insulating liquid. The determined water sorption isotherms, described by means of Langmuir adsorption model, make... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: afterburner chamber, combustion process control, flame segmentation, image instance segmentation, industrial automation, multi-fuel swirl burner.
The energetic usage of fuels from renewable sources or waste material is associated with controlled combustion processes with industrial burner equipment. For the observation of such processes, camera systems are increasingly being used. Comparing Bioeconomy Potential at National vs. Regional Level Employing Input-Output Modeling
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: bioeconomy, input-output, Poland, regional modeling.
The support of economic sectors that exploit natural bio-based resources in a particular region is an opportunity to benefit from local potentials in terms of sustainability, employment, output, and household income. Hence a relevant question emerges, namely, how can bioeconomy sectors be adequately supported? Within this context, another issue is whether the bioeconomy development strategy at a national level should be the same as that at a regional level. To address these issues, in the current study a comparison was made between the bioeconomy sectors at the country level based on the case study of Poland and one of the poorest regions in the European Union—the Lubelskie Region. A regional input−output model was built for the regional economy and compared with the national model. Extended SINDICOMP: Characterizing MV Voltage Transformers with Sine Waves
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: frequency response, harmonics, instrument transformer (IT), power quality (PQ), power system measurement, voltage measurement, voltage transformer (VT).
The paper presents a method for the frequency characterization of voltage transformers (VTs) for medium voltage (MV) grids which involves only sine waves. It is called extended SINDICOMP, since it is an extended version of the previously developed technique SINDICOMP. It requires, in the first step, an evaluation and a compensation of the non-linearity introduced by the VT when it is supplied with a 50 Hz sinusoidal input at rated value. Then, the VT is characterized with a low voltage sinusoidal frequency sweep from the second harmonic frequency up to the first resonance frequency. Some rules to build the approximated frequency response, starting from these two sets of data, are given in the paper. The proposed approach is applied to three commercial MV VTs. Significant improvement of the VT performance is obtained, compared to the use of a frequency response obtained from the low voltage characterization.

Parasitic Effects of PWM-VSI Control Leading to Torque Harmonics in AC Drives
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: 6th harmonic, AC machine, induction motor, PWM inverter, space phasor modulation, torque ripple.
Precise torque control without pulsations is one of the major quality issues in pulse-width modulated voltage-source inverter (PWM-VSI) drives. Theoretically, it could be postulated that at frequencies of some kHz, the machine’s inertia absorbs switching frequency torque harmonics, and the resulting torque becomes smooth; though, in reality, parasitic effects in voltage source inverters may cause additional torque harmonics of low order. In particular, first, second and sixth torque harmonics are observed. Such torque harmonics are especially dangerous for normal drive operation, since they may be amplified by drive train resonances at corresponding rotational velocities. New parasitic effects in PWM-VSI control, leading to torque harmonic of low order, are described in the paper, and recommendations for their compensation are given.

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: adaptive observer, nonlinear control, PMSG, robust control, weak power grid, wind turbine.
This paper proposes a robust finite-time controller (FTC) for a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG)-based wind turbine generator (WTG). An adaptive observer is used for the rotor angle, rotor speed, and turbine torque estimations of the PMSG, thus eliminating the use of anemometers. The robustness of the proposed FTC regarding parameter uncertainty and the external weak power grid is analyzed. The impacts of the power grid short-circuit ratio (SCR) at the point of common coupling (PCC) on the conventional proportional-integral (PI) controller and the proposed FTC are discussed. Case studies illustrate that the proposed observer-based FTC is able to estimate the mechanical variables accurately and provides robust control for WTGs with parameter uncertainty and weak power grids.
