A Limited Common-Mode Current Switched-Capacitor Multilevel Inverter Topology and Its Performance and Lifetime Evaluation in Grid-Connected Photovoltaic Applications
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: common-mode current, grid-tied PV, switched capacitor multilevel.
In this paper, a switched-capacitor multilevel inverter with voltage boosting and common-mode-voltage reduction capabilities is put forth. The proposed inverter is synthesized with one-half bridge and several switched-capacitor cells. Due to the voltage boosting and common-mode current reduction features, the proposed multilevel inverter is suitable for grid-connected PV applications. In addition, an analytical lifetime evaluation based on mission profile of the proposed inverter has been presented to derive lifetime distribution of semiconductors. Whereas in the proposed inverter, any components failure can bring the whole system to a shutdown. The series reliability model is used to estimate the lifetime of the overall system. The performance of the suggested multilevel inverter in grid-connected applications is verified through the simulation results using the grid-tied model in Matlab/Simulink. Moreover, the viability and feasibility of the presented inverter are proven by using a... [more]

Temperature Rise Characteristics and Error Analysis of a DC Voltage Divider
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: error, high-voltage direct current (HVDC), measurement accuracy, temperature coefficient, temperature distribution.
Measurement accuracy is an important performance indicator for high-voltage direct current (HVDC) voltage dividers. The temperature rise effect for a HVDC voltage divider’s internal resistance has an adverse effect on measurement accuracy. In this paper, by building a solid model of a DC voltage divider, the internal temperature rise characteristic and error caused by the temperature rise in a resistance voltage divider were theoretically simulated. We found that with the increase in height and working time, the internal temperature of the voltage divider increased. The results also showed that the lowest temperature was near the lower flange and the highest temperature was near the upper flange in the middle of the voltage divider. The error caused by the temperature rise increased first and then decreased gradually with divider height, increasing with its working time. The measurement error caused by the internal temperature difference in steady state reached a maximum of 158.4 ppm.... [more]

Keywords: battery energy storage system, Carbon-Free Island, distributed generator, Hydrogen, levelized cost of electricity, photovoltaic, stand-alone microgrid, wind power turbine.
The power industry is rapidly changing as demand for eco-friendly and stable power supply increases along with global greenhouse gas emission regulations. Small-capacity renewable power sources represented by photovoltaics and wind are continuously increasing as a form of microgrid to supply electric power to a community or island. As a result, microgrids based on renewable resources have come into wide usage around small areas or islands in Korea. In particular, the microgrid development policy of Korea is focused on electric power quality, as well as expansion in renewable energy supply for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. From 2009, the government began to develop independent carbon-free microgrids with photovoltaic and wind powers instead of traditional power diesel generators for small islands. The goal of this paper is to investigate a feasible economic microgrid topology for implementing the carbon-free island (CFI) under an acceptable level of reliability. First, we derive th... [more]

Optimizing Power and Heat Sector Coupling for the Implementation of Carbon-Free Communities
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: chronology, deep well heat pump, demand response, district heat, hierarchical agglomerative clustering, power-to-heat, sector coupling, thermal storage, two-capacity building model.
To achieve a successful integration of fluctuating renewable power generation, the power-to-heat (P2H) conversion is seen as an efficient solution that remedies the issue of curtailments as well as reduces carbon emissions prevailing in the district heating (DH) sector. Concurrently, the need for storage is also increasing to maintain a continuous power supply. Hence, this paper presents a MILP-based model to optimize the size of thermal storage required to satisfy the annual DH demand of a community solely by P2H conversion employing renewable energy. The DH is supplied by the optimal operation of a novel 2-km deep well heat pump system (DWHP) equipped with thermal storage. To avoid computational intractability, representative time steps with varying time duration are chosen by employing hierarchical agglomerative clustering that aggregates adjacent hours chronologically. The value of demand response and the effect of interannual weather variability are also analyzed. Numerical result... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: boiler units, combustion process, neural network algorithms, torch structure.
A method for evaluating the thermophysical characteristics of the torch is developed. Mathematically the temperature at the end of the zone of active combustion based on continuous distribution functions of particles of solid fuels, in particular coal dust. The particles have different average sizes, which are usually grouped and expressed as a fraction of the total mass of the fuel. The authors suggest taking into account the sequential nature of the entry into the chemical reactions of combustion of particles of different masses. In addition, for the application of the developed methodology, it is necessary to divide the furnace volume into zones and sections. In particular, the initial section of the torch, the zone of intense burning and the zone of afterburning. In this case, taking into account all the thermophysical characteristics of the torch, it is possible to make a thermal balance of the zone of intense burning. Transition Planes for Visual Comfort: Out View with Complex Fenestration System Design at Restaurants in Spain
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: complex fenestration systems, daylight, discomfort glare, radiance, restaurants, visual comfort.
This work deals with daylighting for quality indoor atmospheres, considering building skins. In recent years, almost all retrofit facades of restaurants are highly glazed façades, boosting glare, sun ray absorption and overheating inside. Most of the time, they are not integrated with daylight control; therefore, lighting and out view requirements are not so balanced. Taking into account this daylighting complexity, an alternative façade system is proposed to simulate by Radiance. Previously, perception simulations are compared with measured data, in order to discretize the simulations. In addition, for one point three different view are assessed as: work plane, relation plane and the out plane. Subsequently, two virtual façade models, windows combined by complex fenestration system (CFS) as prismatic film (PF) and highly glazed façade, are tested according to daylighting. For that, three indexes have been used: daylight glare probability (DGP), daylight glare index (DGI) and daylight... [more]

The Influence of Co-Fermentation of Agri-Food Waste with Primary Sludge on Biogas Production and Composition of the Liquid Fraction of Digestate
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: biogas plant, co-fermentation, energy balance, organic nitrogen fractionation, wastewater treatment plant.
Energy self-sufficiency is a current trend in wastewater treatment plants. This effect can be achieved by increasing the production of electricity from biogas and by reducing energy consumption for technological processes. One idea, in line with the circular economy concept, is the use of waste rich in organic matter as co-substrates for the fermentation process. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of waste co-fermentation on biogas production and nitrogen concentration in the reject water. A co-fermentation process with flotate or flotate and vegetables increased biogas production compared to primary sludge by 162 and 180%, respectively. During the tests, there was no inhibition of the fermentation process. Hydrolysis of organic compounds contained in flotate and vegetables resulted in a significant increase in ammonium nitrogen (by 80−100%) and dissolved organic nitrogen concentration (by 170−180%). The biogas and methane production rate as well as the ammonium and tota... [more]

A Diesel Engine with a Catalytic Piston Surface to Propel Small Aircraft at High Altitudes—A Theoretical Study
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: diesel engine, flight ceiling, in-cylinder steam reforming, small aircraft.
Due to the oxygen shortage at high altitudes, the use of diesel engines in small aircraft is limited to a low ceiling level. Here, we propose to significantly extend the ceiling level by introducing an in-cylinder steam reforming system. In this arrangement, the fuel direct-injection assembly comprises of a two-stage process. In the first stage, a blend of methanol and water is injected into the hot previously compressed cylinder charge onto an in-cylinder catalyst. Residual heat is absorbed due to the blend evaporation and the steam-reforming process to produce hydrogen. In the second stage, diesel fuel with a lower ignition temperature than the hydrogen fuel is injected to initiate combustion, while the absorbed heat (from the first stage) is released through the hydrogen oxidation. Essentially, the absorbed heat is exploited to produce extra hydrogen fuel, which increases the cycle efficiency. In this arrangement, the in-cylinder oxygen content is significantly increased due to the... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: energy remodeling of existing houses, in situ, ISO 9869-1: HFM (heat flow meter), ISO 9869-2: IR (infrared method), U-value, window.
The amount of heat lost through the envelope of a building is one of the most important variables that affects the energy performance evaluation of a house. In addition, it is especially important to estimate and accurately diagnose the amount of heat produced by windows. In Korea, windows’ U-values reflect a building’s initial design values and thermal characteristics that determine the thermal performance of an existing building, and is a factor that can overestimate the energy performance of a building. Therefore, there is a need for a field measurement method that can accurately measure the total U-value of windows in an existing house. This study provides a method of quantitatively measuring the total U-value of windows using the infrared (IR) method in ISO 9869-2. As a result of measuring the U-value using the infrared (IR) method, the Korean Standard (KS F 2278) for window performance test result values and the root mean square error (cvRMSE) for the U-value measurements using t... Strategically Targeting Plug-In Electric Vehicle Rebates and Outreach Using “EV Convert” Characteristics
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: adopter characteristics, consumer segment, electric vehicle, EV, incentive design, outreach strategy.
To expand markets for plug-in electric vehicles (EVs) beyond enthusiastic early adopters, investments must be strategic. This research characterizes a segment of EV adoption that points the way toward the mainstream: EV consumers with low or no initial interest in EVs, or “EV Converts.” Logistic regression is utilized to profile EV Convert demographic, household, and regional characteristics; vehicle-transaction details; and purchase motivations—based on 2016−2017 survey data characterizing 5447 rebated California EV consumers. Explanatory factors are rank-ordered—separately for battery EVs (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid EVs (PHEVs), to inform targeted outreach and incentive design. EV Converts tend to have relatively “lower” values on factors that might have otherwise “pre-converted” them to EV interest: hours researching EVs online; motivation from environmental impacts and carpool-lane access; and solar ownership. PHEV Converts more closely resemble new-car buyers than other EV adopters,... [more]

Modeling Control and Robustness Assessment of Multilevel Flying-Capacitor Converters
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: control, Dynamic Modelling, multilevel flying-capacitor converter, robustness assessment, voltage balancing capability.
When performing AC/DC-DC/AC power conversions, multilevel converters provide several advantages as compared to classical two-level converters. This paper deals with the dynamic modeling, control, and robustness assessment of multilevel flying-capacitor converters. The dynamic model is derived using the Power-Oriented Graphs modeling technique, which provides the user with block schemes that are directly implementable in the Matlab/Simulink environment by employing standard Simulink libraries. The performed robustness assessment has led to the proposal of a divergence index, which allows for evaluating the voltage balancing capability of the converter using different voltage vector configurations for the extended operation of the converter, namely when the number of output voltage levels is increased for a given number of capacitors. A new variable-step control algorithm is then proposed. The variable-step control algorithm safely enables the converter extended operation, which prevents... [more]

Application of a Polyacrylate Latex to a Lithium Iron Phosphate Cathode as a Binder Material
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: emulsified water-based binder, lithium iron phosphate cathode, lithium-ion battery, polyacrylate latex.
In the manufacturing process of lithium-ion batteries, the current organic solvent-based processes will inevitably be replaced with eco-friendly water-based processes. For this purpose, the current organic-soluble binder should be replaced with a water-soluble or water-dispersed binder. In this study, a new polyacrylate latex dispersed in water was successfully applied as a binder of lithium-ion battery cathodes for the first time. One of the biggest advantages of the polyacrylate binder is that it is electrochemically stable at the working voltage of typical cathodes, unlike a conventional water-dispersed styrene-butadiene binder. This implies that the water-dispersed polyacrylate has no limitations for the usage of a cathodic binder. The performance of the polyacrylate binder for lithium iron phosphate cathodes was compared with those of a conventional organic-based polyvinylidene fluoride binder as well as a water-dispersed styrene-butadiene binder. The polyacrylate binder exhibited... [more]

Validation of Sea-Surface Temperature Data for Potential OTEC Deployment in the Mexican Pacific
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: OTEC cycle, sea surface temperature, thermal gradient.
As the operation of an ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) plant depends on the temperature gradient between the surface and deeper water (SST), a variation in SST can significantly modify the energy produced. The aim of this paper is to present a comparative analysis of three sea-surface temperature databases (World Ocean Atlas (WOA), Satellite Oceanic Monitoring System (SATMO), and in situ sensor measurements). Simple linear regression and graphic comparisons allow correlations to be made between the distribution patterns of the SST data. The results show that there is no statistically significant difference between the three databases. To determine general regions where OTEC implementation is possible, at the macroscale, the WOA database is recommended, as a smaller amount of data must be analyzed. For meso- and microscales, such as specific areas of the Mexican exclusive economic zone. It is better to use SATMO and in situ measurements as a higher spatial resolution is required.

Short-Term Wind Power Prediction for Wind Farm Clusters Based on SFFS Feature Selection and BLSTM Deep Learning
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: BLSTM, deep learning, feature selection, wind farm clusters, wind power prediction.
Wind power prediction (WPP) of wind farm clusters is important to the safe operation and economic dispatch of the power system, but it faces two challenges: (1) The dimensions of the input parameters for WPP of wind farm clusters are very high so that the input parameters contain irrelevant or redundant features; (2) it is difficult to build a holistic WPP model with high-dimensional input parameters for wind farm clusters. To overcome these challenges, a novel short-term WPP model for wind farm clusters, based on sequential floating forward selection (SFFS) feature selection and bidirectional long short-term memory (BLSTM) deep learning, is proposed in this paper. First, more than 300,000 input features of the wind farm cluster are constructed. Second, the SFFS method is applied to sort the high-dimensional features and analyze the rule that the forecasting accuracy changes with the number of features to obtain the optimal number of features and feature sets.
