Developing a Cold Accumulator with a Capsule Bed Containing Water as a Phase-Change Material

The paper presents the investigation of a prototype cold accumulator using water−ice latent heat for the cold storage process. The concept of the cold accumulator was based on a 200-L-capacity cylindrical storage tank in which spherical capsules filled with water were placed. Beds of polypropylene capsules with diameters of 80 mm, 70 mm, and 60 mm were used in the tests. The cold accumulator operated with a water−air heat pump. Based on the test results, the following parameters were calculated: the cooling capacity, cooling power, energy efficiency of the cold storage, and energy efficiency ratio (EER) of the accumulator. The obtained measurement results were described with mathematical relationships (allowing for measurement error) using criterial numbers and the developed “Research Stand Factor Number” (RSFN) index. The growth in wind power production was weak in the first years after the turn of the millennium, but after Norway joined the Swedish subsidy scheme Tradable Green Certificates in 2012, there was significant growth in the wind power industry. While most of the hydropower production in Norway is owned by the public sector, the majority of wind power production is owned by foreign investors. Since wind power has been very much discussed in Norway, a levelized cost of energy (LCOE) model that can be well suited for this type of discussion is presented. Innovation of Pump as Turbine According to Calculation Model for Francis Turbine Design

The effective utilization of micro hydropower sources is often realized through the use of pumps as turbines (PAT). The efficiency of PAT is about the same as that of the original pump. A further increase in efficiency and power output can be achieved by modifying the parts interacting with the flow, especially the impeller and the adjacent volute casing and draft tube. This paper presents a user-friendly calculation model of Francis turbine design and its application for PAT geometry modification. Two different modifications of a single-stage radial centrifugal pump were designed according to this model. Effect of Phase Change Materials on the Thermal Performance of Residential Building Located in Different Cities of a Tropical Rainforest Climate Zone

This study aims to investigate the thermal performance of PCM and PCM combined with nighttime natural (NV) and mechanical ventilation (MV) applied to a residential building located in eight cities of tropical rainforest climate zone (Af). The analysis was accomplished using numerical simulations and developing a unique methodology for selecting the PCM melting temperature based on the thermal comfort limits. The thermal performance of the PCM integrated building was quantitatively evaluated using the concept of peak temperature drop. Additionally, a novel indicator of Total Temperature Drop (TTD) was introduced to determine the overall impact of the PCM and PCM combined with NV/MV on the thermal comfort conditions inside the building. Phosphorus recovery from waste biomass is becoming increasingly important, given that phosphorus is an exhaustible non-renewable resource. For the recovery of plant nutrients and production of climate-neutral fuel from wet waste streams, hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) has been suggested as a promising technology. In this study, digested sewage sludge (DSS) was used as waste material for phosphorus and nitrogen recovery. HTC was conducted at 200 °C for 4 h, followed by phosphorus stripping (PS) or leaching (PL) at room temperature. The results showed that for PS and PL around 84% and 71% of phosphorus, as well as 53% and 54% of nitrogen, respectively, could be recovered in the liquid phase (process water and/or extract). Over half of California’s forestland is managed by the US Forest Service, and the agency has identified a need to scale up forest restoration treatments in the state to one million acres per year by 2025. However, the high costs of mechanical fuel reduction and lack of markets for biomass pose significant barriers to accomplishing this target. The objectives of this case study were: (1) to identify costs of forest restoration treatments on federally-managed land in the Northern Sierra under a variety of harvesting scenarios and haul distances to biomass facilities, and (2) to understand what market prices for biomass must be offered to support such efforts. We modeled silvicultural prescription and harvesting options, machine productivity and costs, and transportation costs to assess economic thresholds. Measurement and Evaluation of the Defect Size in Soft Magnetic Composites Using Magnetic Field Inspections

This article presents a method for detecting defects and assessing their size in soft magnetic composites (SMCs) based on magnetograms obtained from a magnetic field camera and a numerical analysis of the magnetic field around them. For the purpose of the experiment, toroidal samples of a metal−polymer composite were made, in which holes and gaps simulating defects were prepared. The magnetic camera allowed for registering the magnetic flux density image near the surface of the samples. As a result, magnetograms with information about the location and geometry of defects were obtained. A numerical analysis was used to investigate the influence of various factors, such as defect depth, its size and material permeability. Theoretical changes in magnetic field over defects stay in good agreement with measurements, which is a strong indication that surface field magnetograms can be useful in a quality assessment of the considered composites. In this paper, we present a mathematical model to predict the evolution of rock permeability depending on effective pressure during oil production. The model is based on the use of the results of well testing data from wells operating in the oil fields of the Perm−Solikamsk region in the north of the Volgo Ural oil and gas province. Dependences of the change in flow characteristics in the reservoir on the effective pressure were established. We performed a comparative assessment using permeability and effective pressure data that were normalized to dimensionless forms of k/ko and P/Po. The factors and their influence on the nature of the change in permeability from the reservoir pressure were determined. Measuring the Energy Efficiency of Evaporative Systems through a New Index—EvaCOP

Evaporative systems are probably the oldest technology for thermal comfort. However, they are still an essential technology in the food industry, environments for thermal comfort, and even for cooling data centers. Standards have been improved to compare the energy efficiency of this type of equipment. Using AHRI concepts with temperature data from the 29 most populous cities in the world, an EvaCOP index was created from temperatures that are easier to simulate than current parameters. The index parameters were tested in a laboratory located in Curitiba (Brazil). EvaCOP values of 45.58 and 25.77 W/W were found in the calculation in two different simulated equipment and compared with the compression cycle systems that in the most efficient machines is around 6.29 W/W.

Cooling Design for PEM Fuel-Cell Stacks Employing Air and Metal Foam: Simulation and Experiment

A new study investigating the cooling efficacy of air flow inside open-cell metal foam embedded in aluminum models of fuel-cell stacks is described. A model based on a commercial stack was simulated and tested experimentally. This stack has three proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells, each having an active area of 100 cm2, with a total output power of 500 W. The state-of-the-art cooling of this stack employs water in serpentine flow channels. The new design of the current investigation replaces these channels with metal foam and replaces the actual fuel cells with aluminum plates. Using Heat Pumps to Improve the Efficiency of Combined-Cycle Gas Turbines

This paper studies the integration of heat pump units (HPUs) to enhance the thermal efficiency of a combined heat and power plant (CHPP). Different solutions of integrate the HPUs in a combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plant, the CCGT-450, are analyzed based on simulations developed on “United Cycle” computer-aided design (CAD) system. The HPUs are used to explore low-potential heat sources (LPHSs) and heat make-up and return network water. The use of HPUs to regulate the gas turbine (GT) intake air temperature during the summer operation and the possibility of using a HPU to heat the GT intake air and replace anti-icing system (AIS), over the winter at high humidity conditions were also analyzed. Drag Reduction in the Flow of Aqueous Solutions of a Mixture of Cocamidopropyl Betaine and Cocamide DEA

The study presents results of rheological tests and measurements of pressure drops occurring during the flow of aqueous solutions of a mixture of drag reducing surfactants: cocamidopropyl betaine (CAPB, zwitterionic surfactant) and cocamide DEA (nonionic surfactant) through straight pipes. Tests were carried out at different CAPB/DEA weight ratios and different total concentrations of surfactants in the solution. Rheological measurements demonstrate the formation of a shear-induced structure (SIS) in the temperature range below 10 °C, which provides evidence for the presence of wormlike micelles in CAPB/DEA solutions. Drag reduction was observed during the flow of CAPB/DEA solutions in the temperature range from 3 to 45 °C, however, above 25 °C the degree of drag reduction was markedly decreased. This paper presents a new way of organizing a wind farm with a large number of small to medium-sized turbines. Each wind generator has been included in a switching module of a modular multilevel converter (MMC), which generates the output voltage by near level control (NLC). The proposed topology reduces the number of semiconductors required, switching losses, and voltage filtering requirements. Analyzing Characteristics of Particulate Matter Pollution in Open-Pit Coal Mines: Implications for Green Mining

The particulate pollution in the open-pit coal mines of China is particularly severe in winter. The aim of this study is to understand the pollution characteristics of particulate matter (PM) in winter and provide a basis for the prevention and control of particulate pollution. We took the problem of PM concentration at the bottom of the Haerwusu Open-pit Coal Mine (HOCM) as the research object. Dust monitoring equipment at two measurement points at different heights were positioned for continuous monitoring of the PM concentration. The data for three months were gathered. Statistical analyses were performed to analyze the variation characteristics of the PM and its relationship with meteorological factors. The results show that the average PM concentration in the study area is below the average daily limit of the China National Ambient Air Quality Standard (GB 3095-2012).
