Valorization of Prosopis juliflora Woody Biomass in Northeast Brazilian through Dry Torrefaction

Torrefaction has been investigated to improve the desirable properties of biomass as solid biofuel, usually used in natura as firewood in several countries. This paper has the main objective to present a broad characterization of the biomass Prosopis juliflora (P. juliflora), investigating its potential as a solid biofuel after its torrefaction process. The methodology was based on different procedures. The experimental runs were carried out at 230, 270, and 310 °C for 30 min, using a bench-scale torrefaction apparatus, with an inert atmosphere. In order to investigate the effect of temperature in constant time, torrefaction parameters were calculated, such as mass yield, energy yield, calorific value, base-to-acid ratio (B/A), and the alkaline index (AI). Economic cost is decisive for the development of different power generation. Life cycle cost (LCC) is a useful tool in calculating the cost at all life stages of electricity generation. This study improves the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) model as the LCC calculation methods from three aspects, including considering the quantification of external cost, expanding the compositions of internal cost, and discounting power generation. The improved LCOE model is applied to three representative kinds of power generation, namely, coal-fired, biomass, and wind power in China, in the base year 2015. The external cost is quantified based on the ReCiPe model and an economic value conversion factor system. Results show that the internal cost of coal-fired, biomass, and wind power are 0.049, 0.098, and 0.081 USD/kWh, separately. Photogrammetry using unmanned aerial vehicles has become very popular and is already commonly used. The most frequent photogrammetry products are an orthoimage, digital terrain model and a 3D object model. When executing measurement flights, it may happen that there are unsuitable lighting conditions, and the flight itself is fast and not very stable. As a result, noise and blur appear on the images, and the images themselves can have too low of a resolution to satisfy the quality requirements for a photogrammetric product. In such cases, the obtained images are useless or will significantly reduce the quality of the end-product of low-level photogrammetry. How Will the Improvements of Electricity Supply Quality in Poor Regions Reduce the Regional Economic Gaps? A Case Study of China

Electricity supply quality (ESQ) is critical for healthy economic production, and regional differences in ESQ can widen economic development gaps. To contribute to a more equitable regional development, this study first develops a Gini index of ESQ distribution to measure the inequality among different cities. Then, an econometric model based on the Cobb−Douglas production function is established to quantify the effects of ESQ on regional economy. Finally, we estimate the impacts of ESQ improvement on reducing the economic inequality. The main results show that: (1) Substantial differences exist among the regional ESQ, and the national GDP-based ESQ Gini index was 0.720 in 2018. (2) A GDP-based Lorenz curve has a higher Gini coefficient than the population-based one does, while inequalities in cites are greater than those in rural areas. A building energy performance gap can be illustrated as the difference between the theoretical (methodologically defined) and the actual energy consumption. In EU countries, Energy Performance Certificates are issued when buildings are constructed, sold, or leased. In Serbia, when issuing an energy certificate, the adopted national methodology recognizes only energy consumption for heating. This paper investigates the effect of ground and fumed silica fillers on suppressing DC erosion in silicone rubber. Fumed silica and ground silica fillers are incorporated in silicone rubber at different loading levels and comparatively analyzed in this study. Outcomes of the +DC inclined plane tracking erosion test indicate a better erosion performance for the fumed silica filled composite despite having a lower thermal conductivity compared to the ground silica composite. Results of the simultaneous thermogravimetric and thermal differential analyses are correlated with inclined plane tracking erosion test outcomes suggesting that fumed silica suppresses depolymerization and promotes radical based crosslinking in silicone rubber. The refurbishment of the building stock is a key strategy towards the achievement of the climate and energy goals of the European Union. This study aims at evaluating the energy and environmental impacts associated with retrofitting a residential apartment to improve its vertical envelope thermal insulation. Two insulation materials, stone wool and cellulose fibers, are compared. The life cycle assessment methodology is applied assuming 1 m2 of retrofitted vertical envelope as functional unit. The presence of different pollutants in recycled plastics is reviewed in this article. The desirable circular economy of plastics should be linked to the availability of clean recycled plastics with a non-significant and small to nil amount of substances of concern. Different researchers found polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), such as brominated flame retardants (BFRs), pesticides, dioxins and furans (PCDD/Fs and PBDD/Fs) in plastic recyclates. This represents an added difficulty to the effective recycling process of plastics that reduces the demand for energy and materials, in addition to posing a great environmental danger since they represent a vector of accumulation of the contaminants that will finally appear in the most unexpected products. The research project Fraunhofer Cluster of Excellence “Programmable Materials” aims to develop new materials that can change their properties according to defined boundaries. This article describes the development and use of a novel programmable phase change material (PCM) for latent heat storage applications. At the moment, these PCMs have a programmable trigger mechanism incorporated that activates the crystallization of the material as a reaction to a defined stimulus so that the stored heat is released. In future development stages, programmability is to be integrated on the material level. The latent heat storage that is based on PCMs can be recharged by using the energy of the sun. A Current Sensor Fault Tolerant Control Strategy for PMSM Drive Systems Based on Cri Markers

The paper describes a vector-controlled fault tolerant control (FTC) structure for permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drives. As a control algorithm, the classical field oriented control was applied. For the proper operation of this drive, minimum two current sensors are necessary, however, in the FTC drives additional redundant transducers are applied. Each measuring sensor, including current sensors, are susceptible to damage and can lead to unstable operation of the drive. The presented control structure, with a diagnostic and compensation system, is robust to the typical current sensor faults—lack of signal, intermittent signal, variable gain, signal noise and signal saturation. The fault detection algorithm is based on the signal method. Does Investor Sentiment Affect Clean Energy Stock? Evidence from TVP-VAR-Based Connectedness Approach

We investigated the connectedness of the returns and volatility of clean energy stock, technology stock, crude oil, natural gas, and investor sentiment based on the time-varying parameter vector autoregressive (TVP-VAR) connectedness approach. The empirical results indicate that the average total connectedness is higher in the volatility system than in the return system. The investor sentiment has a weak impact on clean energy stock. Our results show that the dynamic total connectedness across assets in the system varies with time. Furthermore, the dynamic total connectedness increases significantly during financial turmoil. Dynamic total volatility connectedness is more sensitive to financial turmoil. By comparing the connectedness estimated by the TVP-VAR model with the rolling-window VAR model, we find the dynamic total return connectedness of the TVP-VAR model is similar to the estimated results of a 200 day rolling-window VAR model.
