Unbalanced Current Reduction Method of Microgrid Based on Power Conversion System Operation
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: dual current control, ESS, microgrid, PSCAD/EMTDC, redundancy
In isolated areas such as islands with small power grids, the BESS (Battery energy storage system) can supply the standard voltage and frequency to the power system to achieve 100% of renewable sharing. In addition, the installation of additional BESS may be required in the microgrid due to technical limitations such as redundant operation and manufacturer specifications. Thus, the BESSs in a microgrid can be split into main and sub BESSs which play a role as the main source and auxiliary services, respectively. Generally, the ratio of unbalance current in microgrid system tends to be high, because of inherently unbalanced single phase load distribution. However, because the capacity of BESS is calculated under balanced conditions, the PCS (Power conversion system) of BESS may stop protecting its switching device from a single phase overcurrent in actual operation. From this perspective, this paper proposes that the sub BESSs perform dual current control to supply the unbalanced curren... [more]

April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: China, decoupling process, Generalized Divisia Index Method (GDIM), inequality measures, spatiotemporal heterogeneity, urban residential energy consumption
The residential sector has become the second largest energy consumer in China. Urban residential energy consumption (URE) in China is growing rapidly in the process of urbanization. This paper aims to reveal the spatiotemporal dynamic evolution and influencing mechanism of URE in China. The spatiotemporal heterogeneity of URE during 2007−2018 is explored through Kernel density estimation and inequality measures (i.e., Gini coefficient, Theil index, and mean logarithmic deviation). Then, with several advantages over traditional index decomposition analysis approaches, the Generalized Divisia Index Method (GDIM) decomposition is employed to investigate the impacts of eight driving factors on URE. Furthermore, the national and provincial decoupling relationships between URE and residential income increase are studied. It is found that different provinces’ URE present a significant agglomeration effect; the interprovincial inequality in URE increases and then decreases during the study per... [more]

Analyzing Trade in Continuous Intra-Day Electricity Market: An Agent-Based Modeling Approach
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: adaptive learning, agent-based modeling, intra-day electricity markets, renewable energy sources
In recent years, the vast penetration of renewable energy sources has introduced a large degree of uncertainty into the power system, thus leading to increased trading activity in the continuous intra-day electricity market. In this paper, we propose an agent-based modeling framework to analyze the behavior and the interactions between renewable energy sources, consumers and thermal power plants in the European Continuous Intra-day (CID) market. Additionally, we propose a novel adaptive trading strategy that can be used by the agents that participate in CID market. The agents learn how to adapt their behavior according to the arrival of new information and how to react to changing market conditions by updating their willingness to trade. A comparative analysis was performed to study the behavior of agents when they adopt the proposed strategy as opposed to other benchmark strategies. The effects of unexpected outages and information asymmetry on the market evolution and the market liqu... [more]

Grid-Scale Ternary-Pumped Thermal Electricity Storage for Flexible Operation of Nuclear Power Generation under High Penetration of Renewable Energy Sources
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: flexible operation, grid integration, nuclear reactor, ternary-Pumped Thermal Electricity Storage (t-PTES), thermal-electrical co-simulation
In this work, the integration of a grid-scale ternary-Pumped Thermal Electricity Storage (t-PTES) with a nuclear power generation to enhance operation flexibility is assessed using physics-based models and digital real time simulation. A part of the electricity from the nuclear power generation is delivered to the grid, and the balance is used to power a heat pump that can be augmented by an auxiliary resistive load element to increase the charging rate of the thermal storage. This increases the thermal potential between hot and cold thermal stores (usually solid materials or molten salts inside large storage tanks). The thermal energy is transformed back into electricity by reversing the heat pump cycle. Different transient scenarios including startup, shutdown, and power change for grid-connected operation are simulated to determine the behavior of the hybrid nuclear-t-PTES system operating under variable loads that constitute a departure from conventional, baseload nuclear plant ope... Algorithm for Implementation of Optimal Vector Combinations in Model Predictive Current Control of Six-Phase Induction Machines
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: modulation strategies, multiphase induction machine, predictive current control, virtual vectors
The development of new control techniques for multiphase induction machines (IMs) has become a point of great interest to exploit the advantages of these machines compared to three-phase topology, for example, the reduced phase currents and lower harmonic contents. One of the most analyzed techniques is the model-based predictive current control (MPC) with a finite control set. This technique presents high x−y currents because of the application of one switching state throughout the whole sampling period. Nevertheless, it is one of the most used due to its excellent dynamic response. To overcome the aforementioned drawbacks, new techniques called virtual vectors have been developed, but although there are several articles with experimental results, the algorithm for implementing the technique has not been appropriately described. This document provides a clear and detailed explanation for algorithm implementation of virtual vectors through two proposed variants VV4 and VV11, in a six-p... [more]

April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: anaerobic digestion (AD), biogas, biomethane, clean cooking, compressed biogas (bioCNG), compressed natural gas (CNG), energy access, waste management
Anaerobic digestion (AD) can bring benefits in terms of effective management of organic waste, recovery of nutrients and energy recovery, and is consistent with circular economy principles. AD has been promoted and implemented worldwide, but at widely differing scales, influenced by the availability and location of feedstocks. In developing countries, feedstock arises from small- to medium-scale agriculture and agro-processing operations, as well as from household and municipal waste. Biogas produced from residues from agro-processing facilities may be used for on-site heat and power, but the lack of a gas and electricity grid infrastructure can limit opportunities to distribute gas or generated electricity to wider users. This paper presents the findings of the first study to consider novel technologies for small-scale and low-cost biogas clean-up into biomethane, and compression into small bottles, suitable as a clean cooking fuel. Comparison of Screening Configurations for the Mitigation of Voltages and Currents Induced on Pipelines by HVAC Power Lines
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: AC interference, circuital analysis, corrosion, finite element analysis, metallic pipelines, mitigation, screening
In this paper, a strategy for reducing the electromagnetic interferences induced by power lines on metallic pipelines is proposed and numerically investigated. The study considers a set of steel conductors interposed between the power line and the pipeline. Different shapes of conductor cross sections and different magnetic permeabilities are considered, to identify the solution exhibiting the greatest mitigation efficiency for the same amount of material. The investigation is carried out by means of a quasi-3D finite element analysis. Results show that the main mechanism responsible for the mitigation is constituted by the currents induced in the screening conductors by the power line. Hence, a high magnetic permeability can have a detrimental effect since it reduces the skin depth to values below the size of the screening conductor. In this case, a reduction of the screening current and in the mitigation efficiency is observed. Nevertheless, the study shows that the use of strip-shap... [more]

Identification of DC Thermal Steady-State Differential Inductance of Ferrite Power Inductors
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: System Identification
Keywords: DC–DC converters, ferrite cores, saturable inductors
In this paper, we propose a method for the identification of the differential inductance of saturable ferrite inductors adopted in DC−DC converters, considering the influence of the operating temperature. The inductor temperature rise is caused mainly by its losses, neglecting the heating contribution by the other components forming the converter layout. When the ohmic losses caused by the average current represent the principal portion of the inductor power losses, the steady-state temperature of the component can be related to the average current value. Under this assumption, usual for saturable inductors in DC−DC converters, the presented experimental setup and characterization method allow identifying a DC thermal steady-state differential inductance profile of a ferrite inductor. The curve is obtained from experimental measurements of the inductor voltage and current waveforms, at different average current values, that lead the component to operate from the linear region of the ma... Solar energy has been one of the accessible and affordable renewable energy technologies for the last few decades. Photovoltaics and solar thermal collectors are mature technologies to harness solar energy. However, the efficiency of photovoltaics decays at increased operating temperatures, and solar thermal collectors suffer from low exergy. Furthermore, along with several financial, structural, technical and socio-cultural barriers, the limited shadow-free space on building rooftops has significantly affected the adoption of solar energy. Thus, Photovoltaic Thermal (PVT) collectors that combine the advantages of photovoltaic cells and solar thermal collector into a single system have been developed. This study gives an extensive review of different PVT systems for residential applications, their performance indicators, progress, limitations and research opportunities. Enhancements in energy efficiency are currently achieved through strategies to reduce artificial lighting by intelligent daylight utilization. Control strategies in the field of daylighting and artificial lighting are mostly rule-based and focus either on comfort aspects or energy objectives. This paper aims to provide an overview of published scientific literature on enhanced control strategies, in which new control approaches are critically analysed regarding the fulfilment of energy efficiency targets and comfort criteria simultaneously. For this purpose, subject-specific review articles from the period between 2015 and 2020 and their research sources from as far back as 1978 are analysed. Results show clearly that building controls increasingly need to address multiple trades to achieve a maximum improvement in user comfort and energy efficiency. User acceptance can be highligh... Keywords: laminar flow, liquid film break down, rivulet, surface tension, velocity profile
Twenty percent of global electricity supplied to the buildings is used for preventing air temperature increase; its consumption for this prevention will triple by 2050 up to China’s present needs. Heat removed from the thermal power plants may drive cold generation in the absorption devices where mass and heat transfer are two-phase phenomena; hence liquid film break-up into the rivulets is extensively investigated, which needs knowledge of the velocity profiles. Laminar flow in a pipe is used in the preliminary study, velocity profile of developed flow is used as a benchmark. The study account writes the applied apparatus with their calibration procedure, and the uncertainty estimation algorithm. The calibration regression line with the slope close to one and a high Pearson’s coefficient value is the final outcome. Therefore, the apparatus may be applied in the principal research.

Subject: Process Monitoring
Keywords: energy harvesting, energy monitoring, power supply, wireless sensor networks, ZigBee
Home energy monitoring has recently become a very important issue and a means to reduce energy consumption in the residential sector. Sensors and control systems are deployed at various locations in a house and an intelligent system is used to efficiently manage the consumed energy. Low power communication systems are used to provide low power consumption from a smart meter. Several of these systems are battery operated. Sinusoidal Control of a Brushless DC Motor with Misalignment of Hall Sensors
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: BLDC motor, rotor position estimation, sensor misalignment
This article presents an estimation method of the BLDC rotor position with asymmetrically arranged Hall sensors. Position estimation is necessary to control the motor by methods other than block commutation. A sinusoidal control method was selected for the research, which significantly reduces torque ripples and acoustic noise and is quite simple to implement. Inaccurate performance of the elements determining the position of the BLDC motor rotor causes a large error in the position estimation and has a negative impact on the operation of the drive controlled in this way. Using the developed control algorithms, it is possible to correctly determine the mechanical position of the rotor even for multi-pole motors. The proposed method is relatively easy to implement and does not require modification of control systems, being limited to changes only in the software of such devices. The tests of the actual system clearly show the usefulness of such a control method and its effectiveness.

Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: distribution network, impedance estimation, Machine Learning, power flow, slack node voltage
Power flow analysis is an inevitable methodology in the planning and operation of the power grid. It has been performed for the transmission system, however, along with the penetration of the distributed energy resources, the target has been expanded to the distribution system as well. However, it is not easy to apply the conventional method to the distribution system since the essential information for the power flow analysis, say the impedance and the topology, are not available for the distribution system. To this end, this paper proposes an alternative method based on practically available parameters at the terminal nodes without the precedent information. Since the available information is different between high-voltage and low-voltage systems, we develop two various machine learning schemes. Specifically, the high-voltage model incorporates the slack node voltage, which can be practically obtained at the substation, and yields a time-invariant model. On the other hand, the low vo... Keywords: feeder current ampacity, load percentage, load power factor, maximum penetration limit, OHL, PV, system frequency, UGC
This paper investigates the maximum photovoltaic (PV) penetration limits on both overhead lines and underground cables medium voltage radial distribution system. The maximum PV penetration limit is estimated considering both bus voltage limit (1.05 p.u.) and feeder current ampacity (1 p.u.). All factors affect the max PV penetration limit are investigated in detail. Substation voltage, load percentage, load power factor, and power system frequency (50 Hz or 60 Hz) are analyzed. The maximum PV penetration limit associated with overhead lines is usually higher than the value associated with the underground cables for high substation voltage (substation voltage = 1.05 and 1.04 p.u.). The maximum PV penetration limit decreases dramatically with low load percentage for both feeder types but still the overhead lines accept PV plant higher than the underground cables. Subject: Materials
Keywords: Ångström method, temperature distribution in building element, thermal diffusivity measurements, two dimensional approximation
The thermal diffusivity of building materials is an extremely important parameter influencing the subsequent thermal comfort of building users. By definition, thermal diffusivity describes how quickly heat from a hot source can flow through a material. Therefore, this parameter includes both the thermal conductivity and the heat capacity of the material. This parameter is often neglected in heat-related calculations which, in the case of dynamic problems, leads to unreliable results. It should be taken into account that heat flows through all materials at a finite speed. On the other hand, knowing the correct thermal diffusivity value of building materials, it is possible to accurately determine the internal parameters in rooms over time. There are several methods for determining thermal diffusivity, most of which are destined to determine this property in laboratories. The aim of the present research is to show how the thermal diffusivity of materials can be determined in existing bui... [more]
