Pore-Scale Modeling of Air−Water Two Phase Flow and Oxygen Transport in Gas Diffusion Layer of Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: fracture, gas diffusion layer, microscopic porous layer, proton exchange membrane fuel cell, two phase flow
Understanding multiphase flow and gas transport occurring in electrodes is crucial for improving the performance of proton exchange membrane fuel cells. In the present study, a pore-scale model using the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) was proposed to study the coupled processes of air−water two-phase flow and oxygen reactive transport processes in porous structures of the gas diffusion layer (GDL) and in fractures of the microscopic porous layer (MPL). Three-dimensional pore-scale numerical results show that the liquid water generation rate is gradually reduced as the oxygen consumption reaction proceeds, and the liquid water saturation in the GDL increases, thus the constant velocity inlet or pressure inlet condition cannot be maintained while the results showed that at t = 1,200,000 iterations after 2900 h running time, the local saturation at the GDL/MPL was about 0.7, and the maximum value was about 0.83, while the total saturation was 0.35. The current density reduced from 2.39 to... [more]

New Time-Varying Sliding Surface for Switching Type Quasi-Sliding Mode Control
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: control design, discrete-time systems, disturbance compensation, reaching law approach, sliding mode control, trajectory generator
This study considers the problem of energetical efficiency in switching type sliding mode control of discrete-time systems. The aim of this work is to reduce the quasi-sliding mode band-width and, as follows, the necessary control input, through an application of a new type of time-varying sliding hyperplane in quasi-sliding mode control of sampled time systems. Although time-varying sliding hyperplanes are well known to provide insensitivity to matched external disturbances and uncertainties of the model in the whole range of motion for continuous-time systems, their application in the discrete-time case has never been studied in detail. Therefore, this paper proposes a sliding surface, which crosses the system’s representative point at the initial step and then shifts in the state space according to the pre-generated demand profile of the sliding variable. Next, a controller for a real perturbed plant is designed so that it drives the system’s representative point to its reference po... [more]

Degradation-Conscious Equivalent Consumption Minimization Strategy for a Fuel Cell Hybrid System
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: degradation, ECMS, EMS, fuel cell, hybrid system
The design of an energy management strategy is critical to improving the fuel efficiency of a vehicle system with an alternative powertrain system, such as hybrid electric vehicles or fuel cell electric vehicles. In particular, in fuel cell electric vehicles, the energy management strategy should consider system degradation and fuel savings because the hardware cost of the fuel cell system is much higher than that of a conventional powertrain system. In this paper, an easily implantable near-optimal energy management controller is proposed. The proposed controller distributes power generation between the fuel cell and the battery to simultaneously minimize system degradation and fuel usage. The controller is designed to consider the degradation cost and fuel cost in the framework of the equivalent consumption minimization strategy concept. The proposed controller was validated with a fuel cell electric vehicle model in MATLAB/Simulink (MathWorks, Natick, MA, USA). The proposed control... [more]

Adaptive On-Time Buck Converter with Wave Tracking Reference Control for Output Regulation Accuracy
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: buck converter, constant on-time, efficiency, output DC offset
A ripple-based constant on-time (RBCOT) buck converter with a virtual inductor current ripple (VICR) control can relax the stability constraint of large equivalent series resistance (ESR) at an output capacitor, but output regulation accuracy deteriorates due to the issue with output DC offset. Thus, this paper proposes a wave tracking reference (WTR) control to improve converter stability with low ESR and concurrently eliminate output DC offset on the regulated output voltage. Moreover, an adaptive on-time (AOT) circuit is presented to suppress the switching frequency variation with load current changes in continuous conduction mode. A prototype chip was fabricated in 0.35 µm CMOS technology for validation. The measurement results demonstrate that the maximum output DC offset is 4.1 mV and the output voltage ripple is as small as 3 mV. Furthermore, the switching frequency variation with the AOT circuit is 11 kHz when load current changes from 50 mA to 500 mA, and the measured maximum... [more]

April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: cathode sputtering, DC plasma discharge, energy saving, glow discharge nitriding, innovative metallic coatings, processing electrical parameters, vapour deposition
The dynamically developing energy sector forces technologists to create new materials that meet the increasingly higher mechanical, chemical, and electrical requirements. The paper relates to the method of reducing the energy consumption of the plasma nitriding process of austenitic steels. The method proposed by the authors involves the modification of nitriding technology in glow plasma. It consists of introducing perforated screens between the anode and nitrided surface made of a material with a composition similar to the processed material and the use of an HF power supply with controlled mean current generating negative voltage peaks of about 1000 V. Nitriding is carried out in a nitrogen-hydrogen atmosphere. The processed material has a negative potential in relation to the surrounding plasma and strongly negative in relation to the vacuum chamber jacket. The actual treatment is preceded by ionic cleaning of the surface of the detail and heating it to the temperature that activat... [more]

Assessment of Rooftop Solar Power Generation to Meet Residential Loads in the City of Neom, Saudi Arabia
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: domestic PV, Homer Pro, Neom city, net zero energy building, solar photovoltaic panel, solar rooftop energy
The economic and social development of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) has led to a rapid increase in the consumption of electricity, with the residential sector consuming approximately 50% of total electricity production. The KSA depends largely on non-renewable energy resources, and the government has produced Saudi Vision 2030. This plan aims to lessen the country’s reliance on fossil fuels and reduce associated problems such as air pollution. Saudi Vision 2030 combines renewable energy and new building designs so that, for example, the planned city of Neom will be net zero energy. This study addresses how best to reduce Neom’s reliance on the national grid through rooftop photovoltaic generation in residential buildings. The study develops a techno-economic model of rooftop PV with battery storage suitable for existing residential building types likely to be built in Neom city (villas, traditional houses, and apartments), and assesses the optimal PV size, battery storage capacity... April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: dynamic impedance measurements, lithium-ion capacitor, Optimization, temperature
In order to obtain the full impedance characteristics of a lithium-ion capacitor as a function of temperature, the authors proposed the use of dynamic electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Impedance tests were carried out under wide range of dynamic temperature changes for lithium-ion supercapacitors. Significant differences in electrochemical processes were observed as a result of working temperature. Moreover, the quality of fitting of the equivalent circuits most frequently used in impedance analysis of lithium-ion capacitors was discussed. CFD−DEM Simulation of Sand-Retention Mechanisms in Slurry Flow
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: CFD–DEM, multiphase flow, numerical simulation, particulate flow, sand arch, sand filtration, sand retention, slurry flow, validation, verification
The primary motivation of this paper is to investigate the sand-retention mechanisms that occur at the opening of sand filters. Various retention mechanisms under various conditions are explored that have a particulate flow with a low concentration of sand particles (called slurry flow) such as particle shape, size, and concentration. The computational fluid dynamic (CFD)−discrete element method (DEM) model is applied to predict the retention mechanisms under steady flow conditions of the well-bore. By using coupled CFD−DEM (CFD to model the fluid flow, and DEM to model the particle flow), the physics involved in the retention mechanisms is studied. The coarse grid unresolved and the smoothed unresolved (refined grid unresolved) coupling approaches implemented in STAR-CCM+ (SIEMENS PLM) are used to transfer data between the fluid and solid phases and calculate the forces. The filter slots under investigation have different geometries: straight, keystone, wire-wrapped screen (WWS) and s... [more]

Subject: Other
Keywords: array antenna, beam-focusing, beam-forming, dual-band, microwave power transfer, shared-aperture antenna, thinned array, wireless power transfer
In this paper, a dual-band RF wireless power transfer (WPT) system with a shared-aperture dual-band Tx array antenna for 2.4 and 5.8 GHz is proposed. The final configuration of the Tx array, which is made up of 2.4 GHz right-handed circular polarization (RHCP) patches and 5.8 GHz RHCP patches, is derived from the optimization of 2.4 and 5.8 GHz thinned arrays, ultimately to achieve high transmission efficiency for various WPT scenarios. The dual-band RF WPT Tx system including the Tx array antenna and a Tx module is implemented, and Rx antennas with a 2.4 GHz patch, a 5.8 GHz patch, and a dual-band (2.4 and 5.8 GHz) patch are developed. To validate the proposed dual-band RF WPT system, WPT experiments using a single band and dual bands were conducted. When transmitting RF wireless power on a single frequency (either 2.482 GHz or 5.73 GHz), the received power according to the distance between the Tx and Rx and the position of the Rx was measured. Numerical Simulation of Elbow Erosion in Shale Gas Fields under Gas-Solid Two-Phase Flow
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: DPM, elbow erosion, numerical simulation, shale gas, two-phase flow
Erosion is one of the most common forms of material failure and equipment damage in gas transmission pipelines. Shale gas fields use hydraulic fracturing whereby solid particles are often carried in the gas flow, and the pipeline is in a high-pressure state, which is more likely to cause erosion. The prediction of particle erosion regulation in gas-solid two-phase flow is an effective means to ensure the safe operation of shale gas fields. In this paper, an integrated CFD-DPM model is established to investigate the erosion of 90° elbow in a shale gas field under gas-solid two-phase flow, employing the realizable k-ε turbulence model, discrete phase model, and erosion rate prediction model. The reliability of the proposed numerical models is verified by comparing the predicted data with the experimental data. Moreover, the effects of six important factors on maximum erosion rate are analyzed, including gas velocity, mass flow rate of sand particles, particle diameter, shape coefficient... [more]

Improvements and Spatial Dependencies in Energy Transition Measures
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: composite indicators, energy transition, energy transition index, sensitivity analysis, spatial error model
This article aims to improve one of the newest energy transition measures—the World Economic Forum WEF Energy Transition Index (ETI) and find its driving forces. This paper proposes a new approach to correct the ETI structure, i.e., sensitivity analysis, which allows assessing the accuracy of variable weights. Moreover, the novelty of the paper is the use the spatial error models to estimate determinants of the energy transition on different continents. The results show that ETI is unbalanced and includes many variables of marginal importance for the shape of the final ranking. The variables with the highest weights in ETI did not turn out to be its most important determinants, which means that they differentiate the analysed countries well; nonetheless, they do not have sufficient properties of approximating the values of the ETI components. The most important components of ETI (with the highest information load) belong to the CO2 emissions per capita, the innovative business environm... [more]

Numerical Modeling of Sublimation of Ammonium Carbamate Applied to Supply System of NOx Reductant
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: ammonia, ammonium carbamate, NOx, numerical method, sublimation
Recently, ammonium carbamate (AC) has attracted attention as a substitute for urea, which is a commonly used reductant for NOx emitted from combustion engines. The AC exists as a solid at room temperature, and it is decomposed to NH3 and CO2 gases by heating. Therefore, adequate heat transfer is an essential issue in the design of AC pyrolysis reactor. In this study, a numerical model that describes the sublimation of AC was developed. For modeling, this study considered the three different calculation zones: solid-phase zone, gas-phase zone, and sublimation zone. Additionally, during the sublimation process, collapse of upper solid AC into the hollow space below by the effect of gravity is considered. As a result, it is presented that the modeling shows reasonable information about the AC sublimation in a reactor, such as temperatures in a reactor, pressure of reactor, and flow rate of sublimated gas. However, it is also found that accurate prediction of spatial temperature distributi... [more]

Keywords: operations and maintenance, photovoltaics, PV power plants, PV systems, solar energy
Existing megawatt-scale photovoltaic (PV) power plant producers must understand that simple and low-cost Operation and Maintenance (O&M) practices, even executed by their own personal and supported by a comparison of field data with simulated ones, play a key role in improving the energy outputs of the plant. Based on a currently operating 18 MW PV plant located in an under-developing South-Asia country, we show in this paper that comparing real field data collected with simulated results allows a central vision concerning plant underperformance and valuable indications about the most important predictive maintenances actions for the plant in analysis. Simulations using the globally recognized software PVSyst were first performed to attest to the overall power plant performance. Then, its energy output was predicted using existing ground weather data located at the power plant. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: co-combustion, kinetics, low-rank coal, refuse-derived fuel, waste to energy
In connection to present energy demand and waste management crisis in Pakistan, refuse-derived fuel (RDF) is gaining importance as a potential co-fuel for existing coal fired power plants. This research focuses on the co-combustion of low-quality local coal with RDF as a mean to reduce environmental issues in terms of waste management strategy. The combustion characteristics and kinetics of coal, RDF, and their blends were experimentally investigated in a micro-thermal gravimetric analyzer at four heating rates of 10, 20, 30, and 40 °C/min to ramp the temperature from 25 °C to 1000 °C. The mass percentages of RDF in the coal blends were 10%, 20%, 30%, and 40%, respectively. The results show that as the RDF in blends increases, the reactivity of the blends increases, resulting in lower ignition temperatures and a shift in peak and burnout temperatures to a lower temperature zone. This indicates that there was certain interaction during the combustion process of coal and RDF. The activat... [more]

Hydrogen Generation from Wood Chip and Biochar by Combined Continuous Pyrolysis and Hydrothermal Gasification
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: bioenergy, hydrogen production, hydrothermal gasification, pyrolysis
Hydrothermal gasification (HTG) experiments were carried out to extract hydrogen from biomass. Although extensive research has been conducted on hydrogen production with HTG, limited research exists on the use of biochar as a raw material. In this study, woodland residues (wood chip) and biochar from wood-chip pyrolysis were used in HTG treatment to generate hydrogen. This research investigated the effect of temperature (300−425 °C) and biomass/water (0.5−10) ratio on gas composition. A higher temperature promoted hydrogen production because the water−gas shift reaction and steam-reforming reaction were promoted with an increase in temperature. The methane concentration was related positively to temperature because of the methanation and hydrogenation reactions. A lower biomass/water ratio promoted hydrogen production but suppressed carbon-monoxide production. Most reactions that produce hydrogen consume water, but water also affects the water−gas shift reaction balance, which decrease... [more]

Three-quarters of global greenhouse gas emissions come from burning fossil fuels for energy. To confront climate change, the world must move away from fossil fuels and decarbonise its energy systems. In the light of European Union documents, decarbonisation signifies the elimination of CO2 emissions on account of their harmfulness to the environment. The European Union is planning that by 2030, these emissions will be 40% lower in comparison to 1990. A fundamental query arises here: do the achievements of EU countries give cause for optimism in this regard? The aim of the study is an attempt to determine the tendency of changes concerning energy decarbonisation as well as to distinguish typological groups of bodies (EU countries) with similar dynamics in the researched phenomenon. Trend functions and the distance matrices of the growth rate of the researched phenomenon were used for the dynamic classification. This work presents an extensive study on methodologies to calibrate electric energy consumption in buildings. A comparison between several calibration methodologies shows different approaches addressing the same issue, suggesting a lack of a unique methodology that is reproducible for every building. Additionally, no methodology fits the Brazilian public context, such as the predominance of Unitary Air Conditioning Systems (UACS) and buildings which have operated for more than 30 years. A new calibration methodology for performance simulation is proposed to deal with such features. The methodology is separated into two evidence-based steps according to the size of the Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems used to control buildings’ indoor environments: the first step is dedicated to calibrating medium- and large-sized HVAC systems, and the second step is dedicated to calibrating small-sized HVAC systems. Emission Mitigation and Energy Security Trade-Off: Role of Natural Gas in the Indian Power Sector
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
India’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) aim to increase the share of non-fossil fuel, especially renewables, in power generation. But at the same time, it mentions that coal is likely to dominate the power generation in the short and medium term to meet the increase in demand and support the intermittency of renewable energy-based power generation. Thus, additional efforts to transform the thermal power generation to a more efficient and less emitting one in the near term by increasing the use of natural gas (a fossil fuel with a lower emission factor than coal) may be planned towards achieving India’s additional mitigation commitments. The paper presents the implications of a proposed increase in the share of natural gas in thermal power generation of India by looking into the trade-off between emission mitigation and energy security. Along with a Reference Scenario, three alternative emission scenarios are proposed to understand the likely impacts of increased penetration o... [more]
