Recycling of Coal Fly Ash as an Example of an Efficient Circular Economy: A Stakeholder Approach

The scale of waste formation from coal-fired generation is significant and tends to grow steadily in the context of the global use of coal for power production. This paper covers the problems and current opportunities for recycling coal fly ash waste from coal generation from the position of a stakeholder approach, namely, identification of the main participants and determination of the effects for economic agents in coal fly ash recycling projects. Based on the method of economic modeling and the empirical assessment of project efficiency, this paper presents alternative patterns of stakeholder interaction in the process of implementing coal fly ash recycling projects, estimates the effects of using coal fly ash, and identifies conflicting interests between stakeholders. A large consumption of natural gas accompanied by reduced production capabilities makes Europe heavily dependent on imports from Russia. More than half of Russian gas is exported by transiting Ukraine, so in the context of the underlying conflict between the two, this is considered uncertain. Therefore, in this article, we modeled the natural gas transportation system using cooperative game theory in order to determine the bargaining power of the major players (Russia, Ukraine, Germany, and Norway) by using a form of the Shapley value. A Novel Mathematical Model Considering Real Gas PVT Behavior to Estimate Inflow Performance Relationship of Gas Well Production

Inflow performance relationship (IPR) is one of the most important methods for the analysis of the dynamic characteristics of gas reservoir production. The objective of this study was to develop a model to improve the accuracy of the IPR for evaluating and predicting the production of gas reservoirs. In this paper, a novel mathematical model, taking into account the real gas PVT behavior, is developed to accurately estimate the inflow performance relationship. By introducing a pseudo-pressure function and a real gas properties database, this model eliminates the error caused by the linearization method and improves the calculation accuracy. The results show that more than 90% of the energy in the flow field is consumed by inertial forces, which leads to significant high-velocity non-Darcy effects in the gas reservoir. Pumped Hydropower Storage (PHS) is the maturest and most economically viable technology for storing energy and regulating the electrical grid on a large scale. Due to the growing amount of intermittent renewable energy sources, the necessity of maintaining grid stability increases. Most PHS facilities today require a geographical topology with large differences in elevation. The ALPHEUS H2020 EU project has the aim to develop PHS for flat geographical topologies. The Korean government is currently evaluating two alternatives, direct disposal and pyroprocessing, for the disposal of spent nuclear fuel. This paper presents the ranking results of comparing and evaluating direct disposal and pyro-SFR fuel cycle alternatives using multi-criteria decision-making methods such as AHP, TOPSIS, and PROMETHEE. In considering the various evaluation criteria involved in these two alternatives, we aimed to determine the optimal choice in terms of the economic and social conditions of Korea. The evaluation criteria considered were safety, resource availability, environmental impact, economics, nuclear proliferation resistance, and public acceptance. This study proposes a novel design having dense fins with lesser thickness at the upper layer and comparatively spare fins with greater thickness in the lower layer to further improve the overall thermal performance of a double-layer microchannel heat sink. The design can effectively direct more low temperature fluid flow toward the lower layer to improve heat transfer while the sparse fin structure at low layer can ease pressure drop penalty. The Steady Wake of a Wall-Mounted Rectangular Prism with a Large-Depth-Ratio at Low Reynolds Numbers

The wakes of wall-mounted small (square) and large (long) depth-ratio rectangular prisms are numerically studied at Reynolds numbers of 50−250. The large depth-ratio significantly alters the dominance of lateral secondary flow (upwash and downwash) in the wake due to the reattachment of leading-edge separated flow on the surfaces of the prism. This changes the wake topology by varying the entrained flow in the wake region and changing the distribution of vorticity. Thus, the magnitude of vorticity significantly decreases by increasing the prism depth-ratio. Furthermore, the length of the recirculation region and the orientation of near wake flow structures are altered for the larger depth-ratio prism compared to the square prism. The proposed converter demonstrated a quadratic voltage gain and a high efficiency, which makes it suitable for renewable energy applications, where a high voltage gain ratio is desired without imposing a high number of bulky items or employing a high duty cycle of the active switches. The necessity of two-stage (multi-cyclone-baffle) inlet air filters used for motor vehicle engines operating under dusty conditions was demonstrated. The advantages of a set of several dozen cyclones (multi-cyclone) used for filtering inlet air in the engines were shown. The problem of dust accumulation separated by the cyclones in the multi-cyclone dust collector and the necessity of its removal on a current basis were analyzed. Methods of removing dust from the dust collector by means of the QS suction flow were described. It was demonstrated that the most rational method of forcing the suction flow is the use of the suction flow released from the engine. The study results are presented in this paper and show that the removal (by suction) of the accumulated dust from the dust collector additionally causes a noticeable increase in cyclone filtration efficiency. Load-forecasting problems have already been widely addressed with different approaches, granularities and objectives. Recent studies focused not only on deep learning methods but also on forecasting loads on single building level. For that behavior of two neural networks, Long Short-Term Memory and Feed-Forward Neural Network as well as two statistical methods, standardized load profiles and personalized standardized load profiles are analyzed and assessed by using a sliding-window forecast approach. A Study on the Energy Reduction Measures of Data Centers through Chilled Water Temperature Control and Water-Side Economizer

The degree of integration of IT devices and consumption of cooling energy are consistently increasing owing to developments in the data center industry. Hence, to ensure the smooth operation and fault prevention of IT devices, the energy consumption of cooling systems has increased, leading to active research on improvements in cooling system performance for reducing energy consumption. This study examines the reduction in cooling energy consumption using a simulation by applying chilled water control and a water-side economizer (WSE) system to enhance the cooling system efficiency. The simulation results showed that the energy consumption was reduced by 1.8% when the chilled water temperature was set to 11 °C in a conventional system and by up to 19.6% when WSE was also applied. Furthermore, when the changes in chilled water temperature were applied for efficient operation of WSE, the energy consumption was reduced by up to 30.1% compared to that in conventional energy systems.

In this study, the effect of mainstream velocity on the optimization of a fan-shaped hole on a flat plate was experimentally investigated. The experiment was conducted by changing the forward expansion angle (βfwd), lateral expansion angle (βlat), and metering length ratio (Lm/D) of the film-cooling hole. A total of 13 cases extracted using the Box−Behnken method were considered to examine the effect of the shape parameters of the film-cooling hole under a 90 m/s mainstream velocity condition, and the results were compared with the results derived under a mainstream velocity of 20 m/s. One density ratio (DR = 2.0) and a blowing ratio (M) ranging from 1.0 to 2.5 were considered, and the pressure-sensitive paint (PSP) technique was applied for the film-cooling effectiveness (FCE). Recent works have addressed the analysis of some situations that alter the gearbox oil results in wind energy conversion systems (WECS). This work contributes by completing the analysis of additional situations, based on key operational data collected from 10 different multi-megawatt wind turbines at two different locations with two top-tier technologies, and has demonstrated that the oil analysis results can be altered in practice. As important as detecting these situations is to verify how the data collected by the different operators and transferred to the laboratories, this relevant information is not included in most cases. The issues that can stem from this lack of valuable data can be mitigated with a new and more complete template.
