Ethanol/Gasoline Blends as Alternative Fuel in Last Generation Spark-Ignition Engines: A Review on CO and HC Engine Out Emissions
Paolo Iodice, Massimo Cardone.
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: carbon monoxide, ethanol/gasoline blends, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, SI engines, unburned hydrocarbons.
Among the alternative fuels existing for spark-ignition engines, ethanol is considered worldwide as an important renewable fuel when mixed with pure gasoline because of its favorable physicochemical properties. An in-depth and updated investigation on the issue of CO and HC engine out emissions related to use of ethanol/gasoline fuels in spark-ignition engines is therefore necessary. Starting from our experimental studies on engine out emissions of a last generation spark-ignition engine fueled with ethanol/gasoline fuels, the aim of this new investigation is to offer a complete literature review on the present state of ethanol combustion in last generation spark-ignition engines under real working conditions to clarify the possible change in CO and HC emissions. In the first section of this paper, a comparison between physicochemical properties of ethanol and gasoline is examined to assess the practicability of using ethanol as an alternative fuel for spark-ignition engines and to inv... April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Ansys, buildings, Computational Fluid Dynamics, latent heat, phase change material (PCM), phase change simulations, summer and winter, thermal energy storage (TES).
Phase change materials (PCMs) have a large number of applications for thermal energy storage (TES) and temperature reduction in buildings due to their thermal characteristics and latent heat storage capabilities. The thermal mass of typical brick walls can be substantially increased using a suitable PCM primarily based on phase change temperature and heat of fusion for different weather conditions in summer and winter. This study proposed a novel dual-layer PCM configuration for brick walls to maintain human comfort for hot and cold climatic conditions in Islamabad, Pakistan. Numerical simulations were performed using Ansys Fluent for dual PCMs layered within a brick wall for June and January with melting temperatures of 29 °C and 13 °C. This study examined and discussed the charging and discharging cycles of PCMs over an extended period (one month) to establish whether the efficacy of PCMs is hindered due to difficulties in discharging. The results show that the combined use of both P... [more]
Multi-Agent Simulation of Iceberg Mass Loss during Its Energy-Efficient Towing for Freshwater Supply
Sergiy Filin, Iouri Semenov, Ludmiła Filina-Dawidowicz.
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy-efficient towing, freshwater supply, ice melting, iceberg, mass losses, transport, water resources.
The problem of freshwater deficit in the last decade has progressed, not only in Africa or Asia, but also in European countries. One of the possible solutions is to obtain freshwater from drifting icebergs. The towing of large icebergs is the topic analyzed in various freshwater supply projects conducted in different zone-specific regions of the world. These projects show general effects of iceberg transport efficiency but do not present a detailed methodology for the calculation of their mass losses. The aim of this article is to develop the methodology to calculate the mass losses of icebergs transported on a selected route. A multi-agent simulation was used, and the numerical model to estimate the melting rate of the iceberg during its energy-efficient towing was developed. Moreover, the effect of towing speed on the iceberg’s mass loss was determined. It was stated that the maximum use of ocean currents, despite longer route and increased transport time, allows for energy-efficient... [more]
Seismic Performance of Piping Systems of Isolated Nuclear Power Plants Determined by Numerical Considerations

April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cyclic loading tests, finite element method, pipe analysis, seismic fragility, seismic-response analysis.
The interest in the seismic performance of nuclear power plants has increased worldwide since the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant incident. In Korea, interest in the seismic safety of nuclear power plants has increased since the earthquake events in Gyeongju (2016) and Pohang (2017). In Korea, studies have been conducted to apply seismic isolation systems to ensure seismic safety while minimizing the design changes to nuclear power plants. Nuclear power plants with seismic isolation systems may have a higher seismic risk due to the failure of the piping system in the structure after a relatively large displacement. Therefore, it is essential to secure the seismic safety of pipes for the safe operation of nuclear power plants. The seismic safety of pipes is determined by seismic fragility analysis. Seismic fragility analysis requires many seismic response analyses because it is a statistical approach to various random variables. Typical numerical conditions affecting the seismic r... [more]
Generating of Electric Energy by a Declined Overburden Conveyor in a Continuous Surface Mine
Witold Kawalec, Robert Król.
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: belt conveyor, downhill transport of overburden, energy recovery rate, prosumer, recuperation, specific energy consumption.
Exploitation of lignite in continuous surface mines requires removing masses of overburden, which are hauled to a dumpsite. There are some technological arrangements where the overburden is transported several dozen meters down to a spreader operating on a lower located dumping level. Depending on an angle of a declined transportation route, there is a possibility to convert the potential gravitational energy of conveyed down overburden masses into electric energy. To recover the maximum percentage of stored energy, an energy-effective and fully loaded belt conveyor should work in a generator mode. Due to the implementation of such a solution, a lignite continuous surface mine, which is a great electric energy consumer, can obtain the status of an electricity prosumer and reduce its environmental impact, in particular demonstrating significant savings in primary energy consumption. Though lignite surface mining is phasing out in Europe, the recuperative, overburden conveyors for downhi... [more]
Hydrogen Dispersion and Ventilation Effects in Enclosures under Different Release Conditions
Dorota Brzezińska.
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: hydrogen dispersion, hydrogen storage, hydrogen storage systems, hydrogen stratification, hydrogen ventilation.
Hydrogen is an explosive gas, which could create extremely hazardous conditions when released into an enclosure. Full-scale experiments of hydrogen release and dispersion in the confined space were conducted. The experiments were performed for hydrogen release outflow of 63 × 10−3 m3/s through a single nozzle and multi-point release way optionally. It was found that the hydrogen dispersion in an enclosure strongly depends on the gas release way. Significantly higher hydrogen stratification is observed in a single nozzle release than in the case of the multi-point release when the gas concentration becomes more uniform in the entire enclosure volume. The experimental results were confirmed on the basis of Froud number analysis. The CFD simulations realized with the FDS code by NIST allowed visualization of the experimental hydrogen dispersion phenomenon and confirmed that the varied distribution of hydrogen did not affect the effectiveness of the accidental mechanical ventilation system... Keywords: energy loads, EUI, Grasshopper, Ladybug tools, optimisation, outdoor thermal comfort, urban typologies, UTCI.
The recent reports from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) urge for the reconceptualization of our design of the urban built environments. However, current efforts to integrate urban environmental assessment into practice in Egypt are proving insufficient. This paper utilises the Ladybug tools simulation plugins to investigate the impact of changing the morphological characteristics of three-block typologies (scattered, linear and courtyard) and their associated parameters to understand their multidimensional relationship with environmental conditions, outdoor thermal comfort and energy use intensity. This study based in Cairo, Egypt, considers 3430 hypothetical geometrical configurations comprising of a variety of design parameters and indicators. The results show a strong correlation between the design parameters and the combined performance of thermal comfort and energy consumption (R2 = 0.84), with urban density having the strongest impact on both thermal comfort... Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: electrofuels, energy system modelling, energy transition, EnergyScope TD, polynomial chaos expansion, sectors coupling, sensitivity analysis.
Wind and solar energies present a time and space disparity that generally leads to a mismatch between the demand and the supply. To harvest their maximum potentials, one of the main challenges is the storage and transport of these energies. This challenge can be tackled by electrofuels, such as hydrogen, methane, and methanol. They offer three main advantages: compatibility with existing distribution networks or technologies of conversion, economical storage solution for high capacity, and ability to couple sectors (i.e., electricity to transport, to heat, or to industry). However, the level of contribution of electric-energy carriers is unknown. To assess their role in the future, we used whole-energy system modelling (EnergyScope Typical Days) to study the case of Belgium in 2050. This model is multi-energy and multi-sector. It optimises the design of the overall system to minimise its costs and emissions. Such a model relies on many parameters (e.g., price of natural gas, efficiency... [more]
Effects of Tip Speed Ratios on the Blade Forces of a Small H-Darrieus Wind Turbine
Sajid Ali, Choon-Man Jang.
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: blade force, drag force, H-Darrieus wind turbine, internal flow analysis, lift force, tip speed ratio.
Lift force is an important parameter for the performance evaluation of an H-Darrieus wind turbine. The rotational direction of the streamlined force is effective on the performance of the wind turbine. In order to analyze the flow characteristics around the turbine blades in real-time, a numerical analysis using three-dimensional unsteady Reynold-averaged Navier−Stokes equations has been introduced. Experimental data were obtained from a field test facility constructed on an island in South Korea and was introduced to compare the numerical simulation results with measured data. The optimum tip speed ratio (TSR) was investigated via a multi-variable optimization approach and was determined to be 3.5 for the NACA 0015 blade profile. The turbine displays better performance with the maximum power coefficient at the optimum TSR. It is due to the delay in the flow separation from the blade surface and the relatively lower strength of the tip vortices. Furthermore, the ratio between lift and... [more]

April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: COVID-19 pandemic, Dynamic Time Warping (DTW), energy commodity prices, hierarchical clustering.
The main objective of the study is to assess the similarity between the time series of energy commodity prices and the time series of daily COVID-19 cases. The COVID-19 pandemic affects all aspects of the global economy. Although this impact is multifaceted, we assess the connections between the number of COVID-19 cases and the energy commodities sector. We analyse these connections by using the Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) method. On this basis, we calculate the similarity measure—the DTW distance between the time series—and use it to group the energy commodities according to their price change. Our analysis also includes finding the time shifts between daily COVID-19 cases and commodity prices in subperiods according to the chronology of the COVID-19 pandemic. Our findings are that commodities such as ULSD, heating oil, crude oil, and gasoline are weakly associated with COVID-19. On the other hand, natural gas, palm oil, CO2 allowances, and ethanol are strongly associated with the deve... [more]

April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Energy, human capital, PLS-SEM, salaries, Spain.
The role of the energy industry has always been central for one reason or another, being environmentalism the main motive in the last two decades. Therefore, attention and research have been directed in this sense. However, human resources—or human capital—have remained understudied, especially concerning the salaries received. Thus, this study is disruptive as it explored the factors that influence employee remuneration in the energy subsector, using Spain as a case study. For this, the PLS-SEM (Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling) path modelling methodology was used, executing a traditional PLS analysis, bootstrapping and, finally, IPMA (Importance-Performance Analysis). Solid and significant relationships were found among labour conditions, human capital, market and wages, with the relationships between human capital and wages and between human capital and labour conditions being especially relevant. Besides, through IPMA, a series of considerations was made regardin... [more]

The subject of this study is the chemical composition of potentially geothermal waters of the Mesozoic basement of the central part of the Carpathian Foredeep and the Outer Carpathians regions. The research objectives were: (1) to identify statistically significant differences between the chemical composition of waters from the Cretaceous, Jurassic, and Triassic aquifers, and between the waters of both regions; and (2) the discovery of zones indicating active water exchange—attractive due to the operational efficiency of wells. Knowledge of the chemical composition of water allows for the preliminary identification of areas of interest for the exploitation of water for recreational, healing, and heating purposes. The research methods used were: (1) statistical tests and (2) methods of multivariate data analysis, such as the Kruskal−Wallis test and Principal Component Analysis (PCA). The performed tests and statistical analyses allowed us to draw conclusions about significant difference... [more]

Keywords: distribution, Energy, generation, grid connected, photovoltaic insertion.
The growth in global electricity demand has expanded the search for new energy resources. Renewable sources such as photovoltaic (PV) systems have proven to be major alternatives. PV generators connected to distribution grids have exhibited significant growth in the last decade, so it is essential to analyse the impacts resulting from this increase. This work investigated the influence of high PV system penetration in distribution grids in terms of harmonic levels. In particular, this study addressed the distortions in voltage and current waveforms in the presence and absence of PV generators connected to a distribution grid. Additionally, the total harmonic content and the individual harmonic frequencies of voltage and current were analysed. This study was performed with an IEEE 37 bus distribution system and the Open Distribution System Simulator software (OpenDSS). The results show that the voltage limits of some phases far away from a substation can exceed the limits. Furthermore,... [more]

Keywords: critical Reynolds number, entrance region, mini-channel, parallel plates, rectangular channel, single-phase heat transfer, spallation target, turbulent flow.
In order to provide a theoretical basis for the thermal design of the neutron production target, flow and heat transfer characteristics are studied by using numerical simulations and experiments. A rectangular mini-channel experimental model consistent with the geometric shape of the heat dissipation structure of neutron production target was established, in which the aspect ratio and gap thickness of the test channel were 53.8:1 and 1.3 mm, respectively. The experimental results indicate that the critical Re of the mini-channel is between 3500 and 4000, and when Re reaches 21,000, Nu can reach 160. The simulation results are in good agreement with the experimental data, and the numerical simulation method can be used for the variable structure optimization design of the target in the later stage. The relationship between the flow pressure drop of the target mini-channel and the aspect ratio and Re is obtained by numerical simulation. The maximum deviation between the correlation and t... April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: collector thermal efficiency, cross-corrugated module, double-pass operation, external recycle, solar air collector.
The effect of external-recycle operations on the thermal performance of double-pass cross-corrugated solar air heaters (SAH) under different operating conditions was investigated experimentally and theoretically. Additionally, the simultaneous ordinary equations were solved analytically for each proposed configuration. Four recycling types are introduced for improving the solar thermal performance with different external recycle processes, which are expected to enhance the heat transfer coefficient with a convective turbulent flow between the air and the absorber in the present study. Using recycling double-pass operations, two processes were conducted sequentially: air first flowed over the sinusoidal corrugated absorber plate and then flowed back later over the transverse sinusoidal corrugated bottom plate. Improved device performance was achieved due to the doubled heat transfer area over and under the corrugated absorber plate, from which both the sinusoidal cross-corrugated absorb... [more]

April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: building rooftops, collective self-consumption, cost-benefits, geographic information system, residential buildings, self-sufficiency, solar photovoltaic technologies.
It is common practice, in the production of photovoltaic energy to only use the south-exposed roof surface of a building, in order to achieve the maximum production of solar energy while lowering the costs of the energy and the solar technologies. However, using the south-exposed surface of a roof only allows a small quota of the energy demand to be covered. Roof surfaces oriented in other directions could also be used to better cover the energy load profile. The aim of this work is to investigate the benefits, in terms of costs, self-sufficiency and self-consumption, of roof integrated photovoltaic technologies on residential buildings with different orientations. A cost-optimal analysis has been carried out taking into account the economic incentives for a collective self-consumer configuration. It has emerged, from this analysis, that the better the orientation is, the higher the energy security and the lower the energy costs and those for the installation of photovoltaic technologi... April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: frequency sensitivity, frequency shift, harmonic resonance, industrial networks, modal analysis, power quality.
Due to a rising share of power electronic devices in power networks and the consequent rise in harmonic distortion, impedance resonances are an important issue. Nowadays, the frequency scan method is used for resonance phenomena identification and analysis. The main disadvantage of the method is its inability to decouple different resonance phenomena. This means that the method is also unable to provide sufficient information about the effects that the parameters of network elements have on different resonance phenomena. Furthermore, it was also noted that despite the fact that the harmonic resonance mode analysis is well described in the literature, there is a lack of systematic approach to the analysis procedure. Thus the main objective of this paper is to address this disadvantage and to propose a systematic approach to harmonic resonance analysis and mitigation, utilizing modal analysis. In the first part of the paper, dominant network nodes in terms of resonance amplification of h... [more]

Subject: Other
Keywords: dielectric response, HV bushing, paper–oil insulation, temperature distribution.
HV bushings are an important part of the equipment of large power transformers, responsible for their many serious (including catastrophic) failures. Their proper exploitation needs to apply correct and reliable diagnostics, e.g., the use of dielectric response methods, that take into account their specific construction and working conditions. In this article, based on laboratory tests carried out on a real bushing, it has been shown that the significant temperature distribution within its core significantly affects the shape of the dielectric response of its insulation; therefore, the approach to its modeling should be changed. Hence, a new method for interpreting the results, using the so-called the 2XY model, is proposed. Subsequently, based on the measurements made on the insulators in operation, a new modeling method was verified. In conclusion, it can be stated that the 2XY model significantly improves the reliability of the dielectric response analysis, which should be confirmed... [more]

This research presents the modeling and prediction of the harmonic behavior of current in an electric power supply grid with the integration of photovoltaic power by inverters using artificial neural networks to determine if the use of the proposed neural network is capable of capturing the harmonic behavior of the photovoltaic energy integrated into the user’s electrical grids. The methodology used was based on the use of recurrent artificial neural networks of the nonlinear autoregressive with external input type. Work data were obtained from experimental sources through the use of a test bench, measurement, acquisition, and monitoring equipment. The input−output parameters for the neural network were the current values in the inverter and the supply grid, respectively. The results showed that the neural network can capture the dynamics of the analyzed system. The generated model presented flexibility in data handling, allowing to represent and predict the behavior of the harmonic ph... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: artificial bee colony, chance constraint problem, chaotic sequences, economic emission dispatch, risk level, security level.
Due to the rapid increase in the consumption of electrical energy and the instability of fossil fuel prices, renewable energy, such as wind power (WP), has become increasingly economically competitive compared to other conventional energy production methods. However, the intermittent nature of wind energy creates certain challenges to the power network operation. The combined economic environmental dispatch (CEED) including WP is one of the most fundamental challenges in power system operation. Within this context, this paper presents a new attempt to solve the probabilistic CEED problem with WP penetration. The optimal WP to be incorporated in the grid is determined in such a way that the system security is within acceptable limits. The system security is described by various fuzzy membership functions in terms of the probability that power balance cannot be met. These membership functions are formulated based on the dispatcher’s attitude. This probabilistic and non-convex CEED proble... [more]

April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: DC aging, double Schottky barrier, point defects, ZnO varistors.
Lowered power loss and asymmetrically electrical parameters are reported in the DC aging of Co2O3-doped ZnO varistors in this paper. Based on the frequency domain dielectric responses of the pristine and degraded samples, the present study explores the roles of point defects in the aging process via dielectric relaxations and their parameters. It is found that breakdown field increased more in the positive direction than the negative direction. Nonlinearity increased in the positive direction, whereas it decreased in the negative direction, and leakage current density increased more in the negative direction than the positive direction. Given the lowest migration energy of Zinc interstitial (Zni, 0.57 eV) and high oxygen ion conductivity in Bi2O3-rich phase, it is speculated that Zni and adsorbed oxygen (Oad) migrate under DC bias, and then change the defect structure and the double Schottky barrier (DSB) at grain boundaries. As a result, the forward-biased barrier height gradually dec... [more]
Centralized and Decentralized Optimal Control of Variable Speed Heat Pumps

April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: adaptive control, decentralized control, demand response, optimal control, parameter estimation, thermostatically controlled load.
Utility service providers are often challenged with the synchronization of thermostatically controlled loads. Load synchronization, as a result of naturally occurring and demand-response events, has the potential to damage power distribution equipment. Because thermostatically controlled loads constitute most of the power consumed by the grid at any given time, the proper control of such devices can lead to significant energy savings and improved grid stability. The contribution of this paper is the development of an optimal control algorithm for commonly used variable speed heat pumps. By means of selective peer-to-peer communication, our control architecture allows for the regulation of home temperatures while simultaneously minimizing aggregate power consumption, and aggregate load volatility. An optimal centralized controller is also explored and compared against its decentralized counterpart.

This article investigates the design, modeling, and fabrication of small-size (150 × 90 × 1.6 mm) broadband printed biconical antenna. The proposed antenna is intended for use a reference antenna for electromagnetic interference measurement inside the EMC chamber. The reflection coefficient (S11-parameter) is verified by modeling the equivalent circuit of the structure in terms of lumped elements. This structure offers a −10 dB impedance bandwidth (from 0.65 GHz to 2.3 GHz) with the tapered balun feeding method. Therefore, it has a high probability of estimating the electromagnetic waves emitted from several applications such as GSM, LTE, UMTS, 3G, Wi-fi, Bluetooth, ZigBee and more. The simulated standard antenna parameters are compatible with the measured parameters results. Furthermore, azimuth omnidirectional radiation pattern and well-realized gain (3.8 dBi) are achieved, reflecting good values of antenna factor compared to the commercial design.

Keywords: ground heat exchanger, heat transfer, Modelling.
In order to find the temperature field in the ground with a heat exchanger, it is necessary to determine temperature responses of the ground caused by heat sources and the influence of the environment. To determine the latter, a new model of heat transfer in the ground under natural conditions was developed. The heat flux of the evaporation of moisture from the ground was described by the relationship taking into account the annual amount of rainfall. The analytical solution for the equations of this model is presented. Under the conditions for which the calculations were performed, the following data were obtained: the average ground surface temperature Tsm = 10.67 °C, the ground surface temperature amplitude As = 13.88 K, and the phase angle Ps = 0.202 rad. This method makes it possible to easily determine the undisturbed ground temperature at any depth and at any time. This solution was used to find the temperature field in the ground with an installed slinky-coil heat exchanger tha... [more]

Keywords: FRA, parameter estimation, power transformer, SFRA, transformer.
A power transformer is an essential device for stable and reliable power transfer to customers. Therefore, accurate modeling of transformers is required for simulation-based analysis with the model. The paper proposes an efficient and straightforward parameter estimation of power transformers based on sweep frequency response analysis (SFRA) test data. The method first develops a transformer model consisting of repetitive RLC sections and mutual inductances and then aligns the simulated SFRA curve with the measured one by adjusting parameters. Note that this adjustment is based on individual parameter impacts on the SFRA curve. After aligning the two curves, the final transformer model can be obtained. In this paper, actual single-phase, three-winding transformer model parameters were estimated based on field SFRA data, showing that SFRA curves simulated from the estimated model are consistent with the measured data.
