CFD Analysis of the Forced Airflow and Temperature Distribution in the Air-Conditioned Operator’s Cabin of the Stationary Rock Breaker in Underground Mine under Increasing Heat Flux

The exploitation of natural resources is associated with many natural hazards. Currently, the copper ore deposits exploited in Polish mines are located at a depth of about 1200 m below the surface. The primary temperature of the rocks in the exploited areas reaches 48 ∘C, which constitutes a major source of heat flux to the mine air. However, another important source of heat is the machine plant, which mainly consists of machines powered by diesel engines. Following the results of in situ measurements, boundary conditions for a simulation were determined and a geometric model of the cabin was created. Pore Structure and Fractal Characteristics of Coal-Measure Sedimentary Rocks Using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry (MIP)

Analyzing and mastering the fractal features of coal-measure sedimentary rocks is crucial for accurately describing the pore structure of coalbed methane resources. In this work, mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) are performed on coal-measure sedimentary rocks (i.e., shale, mudstone, and sandstone) to analyze their pore structure. Pore size distributions (PSDs) and the multifractal dimensions of the investigated samples are discussed. Moreover, multivariable linear regression models of multifractal dimensions are established through a comprehensive analysis of multifractal characteristics. The results show that sandstone (SS-1) and clay rocks are dominated by nanopores of 0.01 to 1 μm, while sandstone (SS-2) is mostly mesopores and macropores in the range of 1 to 10 μm. Variable-Speed Propeller Turbine for Small Hydropower Applications

Standard technical solutions are not cost-effective for many small hydropower sites. This study aims to demonstrate the workflow for the tailor-made variable-speed axial propeller turbine and provide proof of this concept. The turbine is designed to meet the site’s specific space limitations and operating range needs. The runner shape is adjusted to the variable-speed operation and defined hydraulic profile using a parametric geometry model and CFD-based optimization. The variable-speed propeller turbine shows excellent flow control while keeping the mechanical design simple. The tailor-made approach minimizes construction costs using existing structures and is highly suitable for mini-hydropower applications. The prototype—an atypical turbine designed for highly restricted space and installed on-site—serves as proof of the concept. The findings on the design of axial variable-speed turbines are presented.

Proof of the Concept of Detailed Dynamic Thermal-Hydraulic Network Model of Liquid Immersed Power Transformers

The paper presents a physics-based method to calculate in real time the distribution of temperature in the active part of liquid immersed power transformers (LIPT) in a transient thermal processes during grid operation. The method is based on the detailed dynamic thermal-hydraulic network model (THNM). Commonly, up to now, lumped models have been used, whereby the temperatures are calculated at a few points (top-oil and hot-spot), and the parameters are determined from basic or extended temperature-rise tests and/or field operation. Surfactants have been proven to be efficient alternatives to organic solvents in the extraction process. In this study, an effective approach involving deep eutectic solvent (DES) (choline chloride and carboxylic acids) treatment supplemented with surfactants has been developed to disrupt the cell walls of microalgae and increase the extraction of lipids suitable for biodiesel production. The results show that the principal minerals of the samples are quartz, kaolinite, and illite. Energy Performance and Control Strategy for Dynamic Façade with Perovskite PV Panels—Technical Analysis and Case Study

Effective implementation of renewable energy sources (RES) is one of the main challenges in regard to the organization of local energy microgrids with buildings. One of the solutions is the use of dynamic building façades with photovoltaic (PV) panels, in particular the innovative perovskite solar cells (PSCs). This paper describes a case study performed on a pilot installation of perovskite PV panels located in Poland, Central-Eastern Europe. Results of preliminary measurements on this installation are provided in terms of verifying its energy efficiency and the possibility of selecting settings for the façade dynamics control system. Our experiments have considered the sun-tracking mechanism and its energy consumption as well as the impact of weather conditions at different times of the year. New Strategy on Power Absorption of a Concentric Two-Body Wave Energy Converter

The wave energy converter (WEC) system, which extracts electricity through the relative heave motion of two concentric cylinders, comprises an inner cylinder and a torus-type outer cylinder sliding along the inner cylinder. To maximize the relative heave motion between two cylinders, the natural frequencies of the two cylinders must be precisely tuned to resonate and be situated on each side of the peak frequency of the wave spectrum. However, the demerit of this strategy is that it demands a deep draft of each cylinder for tuning, and a large-scale PTO damping device is necessary for mechanical power amplified by resonance. As an alternative to efficient and stable WECs, we adopt a new strategy in which the outer cylinder follows the incoming waves and the motion of the inner one is restricted to be minimal using a heave disk.
